They’re already out there… Over here… In Europe! That wild trio named Stinking Lizaveta! Starting the tour during a European heatwave that hasn’t occurred in this vicious capacity many times before must have been bewildering. But I am sure the embrace of the ones lucky enough to already have seen them must have provided them with all they needed. And they’re still here. For quite some time! And yes, I will see them too. Cause I will be attending Stoned From The Underground Festival for the very first time. Are you going to see them live somewhere? 

They’ve been releasing music for some thirty years, a fact that was celebrated by the remastered and release of their debut album; which was recorded by Steve Albini in 1996. SRA Records did the deed, but Stinking Lizaveta did the dirty! The dirty business that made Hopelessness and Shame an album that left your nerve endings in tatters and anxiously awaiting a smoke break in the hallway. A thunderous instrumental manifesto that burst out of the Philadelphia underground with all the grace of a runaway freight train! Perfectly captured by Albini, a trio at full energy! Yanni Papadopoulos' already battered and bruised Les Paul screaming like machinery possessed, Alexi Papadopoulos' electric upright bass growling from somewhere beneath the city's cracked pavement, and Cheshire Agusta battering every available surface with glorious intent. Punk? Metal? Free-form jazz? The labels disintegrate under the pressure and give way to something new, beautiful and desired. A brick through the window of convention! And now, three decades later, the maturity of the album, and the rhythm it still contains, makes Hopelessness and Shame even feel less like a debut and more like the opening salvo for a revolution… And we are always in need of one of those!

Philadelphia's cult doom-jazz rockers Stinking Lizaveta return this Summer to Europe for a festival-hopping tour, beginning Saturday June 20th in Italy, including rocking through Croatia for the mighty Bearstone Festival, and completing the circuit July 10th with Germany's iconic Stoned From The Underground festival.

On what is is Stinking Lizaveta's third summer in a row over in Europe booked without an agent, the tour will see Stinking Liz share stages with the likes of Elder, Naxatras, Altın Gün, Mars Red Sky, and more.

30 years on from their 1996 debut album Hopelessness and Shame, the trio show no hint of slowing down as they bring their iconoclastic mix of doom, noise rock, jazz, and more across the pond. 2025 saw their vinyl reissues of Hopelessness and Shame and sophomore effort Slaughterhouse on SRA Records (Soul Glo, HIRS), and 2026 will see them release a new album with SRA this Fall.

Back from the mountains…

 

 

Back from the mountains…

We’re back! And sure to be ready for action soon enough… What a trip it was! We travelled down slowly towards the National Parc des Ecrins in France to hike some mountains there and on route got treated to a super surprise concert by Ben Marula & Philip Doyle on the back of a car in the center of Toul. One of our first stops, which promised nothing but good and wild times! After hiking around the Ecrins we departed for the Cottian Alps, did some hikes there, topped the Pain De Sucre mountain and travelled towards Piemonte in Italy. Staying with local farmers of all sorts and then tried a bit of the city life by hitting Turin. A beautiful city ! And if you are ever near Dr Fake Cabinet and his art exhibition store by sure to visit! Curiosa and art at its finest! But we longed for the mountains, so after tasting a bit of beautiful Turin we headed off for the Aosta valley promising ourselves to return. Hiking both the Matterhorn side and the Conge side showed us we could have been there for a week or two as well as in the Ecrins… It was a beautiful trip in every way, letting ourselves be guided by the wind, nature and whatever came out way… No plans… No headache… It was beautiful! 

 

And now… Now we have almost a thousand emails waiting on the Stoner HiVe account. Almost an equal amount on the various personal and work accounts… So, we’re back… And soon we will get back the usual business of posting words on whatever album that found its way into our ears and hearts! It make just take a few more days though… But listening to all that’s good and heavy starts now…

Off to… France and Italy…

It’s that time again… Three weeks off grid, connecting with nature and all the good stuff life has to offer… We’re off to the Ecrins Natural Park to hike around the mountains there and then off to the Piemonte region in Italy. Lots of hiking there as well… And since we’re close to Turin, we might visit that. Hence, we will be taking the Dune Aurora album with us for sure. Got any more tips we definitely need to bring on the road?

Wow. Wow. WOW!!! There are debut albums that leave a lasting impression. There are also the ones that radiate with hellish joy and hit your skull with a concrete brick. And then there's 'The Palace' by Cesar Sun, a young band from Ghent, Belgium, that ties you to a pole just to run you over while driving a revved-up tank at 100 miles per hour. This is the real shit people. The kind that feeds you razorblades for breakfast and rips the fuzz from your guts.

The intro 'Easy Come' starts with subdued speech before the rope gets payed out, serving energy on a bed of tension before the chest gets pumped up and ripped open with the first real song 'Where Is The Wine?', a belter of gargantuous proportions that displays the utter desperation when one runs out of a certain type of liquid at an inappropriate time. And man, those vocals! It's hard to put into words how they sound, but they're phenomenal with the perfect balance between emotion and power.

Even though the whole album pays homage to the church of rock and its complacent aggression, there are also moments where the gas pedal gets some relief. A great example are the verses in 'Paradies' (the German word for paradise) that form a stark contrast to the chorus and makes the latter blast even harder than it already does. In the jumpy and diverse 'Backwards Overbender' the title appears out of nowhere in whispering form before things get back to the nitty gritty of kicking the shit out of you. And there we've got the key word to this splendid album: diversity. Because the sound of Cesar Sun is all over the place, borrowing from lots of styles while staying coherent all the way through.

Take - for example - the punk influences that spice up 'Piss In Peace' and 'The Line'. Or the way they appear to enter the night shop at some point asking (again) where the wine is before they settle for almost one minute of furious doom, leading to the conclusion the shop might be all sold out in that department. 'Tunacan' is more straight forward and has the line 'you need more money to need more money' ringing in your head for an elongated period of time. It all leads up to the final song 'Easy Go' that shows their most sensitive side during the first one and a half minute, after which elements of postrock are added until the last chord fades out into something that can be called a quiet emptiness, a place where your feelings (that have been so thoroughly tested) are echoing in the large halls of an empty palace, totally in sync with what you've heard the past 24 minutes.

I adore this languid, sunny version of kraut and psych. And that’s what Doppelgänger is all about. As the needle drops on the record, the Go Mahhh four pull listeners into a haze of swirling fuzz, hypnotic grooves and evening sun psychedelics straight out of the Berlin underground. This is dream music. This is that slightly feverish, slightly sweaty and especially giddy feeling you might experience dancing with the girl of your dreams as the sun slowly sets… 

Shoegaze textures might be colliding with heavy stoner riffs on some moments, for the most part though we are dancing through all sorts of krautrock repetition. High Mountain opens the set, the evening, the trip with trance like intensity! While tracks like Anatoliosis and Happy Satan’s Reign drift between cosmic exploration and raw, earth-shaking power. Or is that because you are falling so madly in love that you feel the world whirl around you? 

They have walls of guitar, which seem to bend over you or embrace you all around, they are hairy, fuzzy walls and you want to cuddle them and fondle all the subtle details… Fluttering flute lines, shimmer synth work, tablas, vocals drenched in echo and kaleidoscopic mirroring. Those minor or more Eastern influences. It is unpredictable, the pulse of this record. The heartbeat that skips. Just like when you are falling in love. Take a chance, say yes, and keep saying yes.

It sounds like Go Mahhh continuously said yes to whatever came next when they were writing and recording Doppelgänger. Skirting around edges, never polishing the rawness, making the fever run hot and the party vibe even hotter. Songs are allowed to stretch, meander, wander, get of course and explode with fearless energy! And it’s that twitchy unpredictability that makes the album so compelling. And yes, it will make the sun set and the gaze into the eyes of who are you are dancing with seem to last forever…

I remembered the Eastern Tales album from 2019. The progressive and psychedelic nature of the compositions weaving itself around all those worldly and Eastern influences had fairytale qualities. It made you see the caravans, the dust storms and the oasis. And now, after seven years, and many different members, the Athens based outfit Babylon Tree is back with a new release called Habim! 

Two instrumental beauties cover the Habim sides, both lasting around ten minutes and both again in the vein of Eastern tinged psychedelic rock. But warmer to the touch and more finely produced. Still retaining all of those storytelling properties. Somewhere between a desert mirage and a midnight trek along the moonlit city walls, Babylon Tree emerges, carrying dust covered riffs, hypnotic grooves and melodies that have that ancient and wise feel. Habim unfolds like a journey through the forgotten alleyways from some grand Middle Eastern city, and the burning dunes outside. Where fuzzy guitars can echo against the city walls or drift off towards the endless horizon. A track like Liquid Garden drifts and pulses with a mantra like energy, pulling the listener ever deeper into a world where the heavy side of desert rock whisps around all that psychedelic mysticism. 

The sound seems ingrained with a jam like quality, as if everything came naturally, shaping the sound organically and letting each composition breathe, evolve and reach its full potential. The Oriental melodies, enriched by female vocals that seem to drift like the wind itself, only get crushed by a riff once or twice, creating moments that feel entirely meditative, until that explosive instance. It is without any doubt inspired by seventies progressive rock and psychedelia, the raw pulse of desert rock and the love of a story… For if you take Habim with you, then Habim will take you into a dreamlike landscape where heaviness, atmosphere and storytelling flow completely naturally and become one…

Hypnosaur kicks the video store doors off the hinges and floods the room with neon graveyard smoke, satanic disco glitter, and enough hooks to hijack your nervous system for weeks! As we already stated...  Afterlife sounds like a cursed VHS tape of some weird eighties horror flick, discovered behind a liquored-up video store owner sleeping in a dumpster at 3AM, then blasted through a wall of fuzzed-out blown-out amplifiers. Massive choruses, earworm metal, occult swagger, psychedelic detours, punked-up stoner riffs and synths dripping radioactive slime collide in glorious excess. The weeks are flying by! And soon we will depart on our three weeks off grid holiday adventure, hugging the border between France and Germany as we go south to Italy, towards the Turin region, and the mountains in the vicinity. But we still have a few days to do a few HiVe posts… Although probably not as many as we did last week! First up: A FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for the Hypnosaur album Afterlife! Coming at you in a few hours! 

Last week we posted quite a few words by our inhouse poet: Ronny Dijksterhuis. Did you manage to look at  Stump Grinder? Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell? Gnod? Or his faster than shadow work for the Quick Fire Friday? Which we continued on with a Quick Fire Weekend! (Saturday  & Sunday) Those three Quick Fire posts along will give you twenty-four albums, ep’s and singles to check out! And we upped words on the amazing new Iguana Death Cult and stunning Robot God. And then there were those two Premieres! The monastic doom album by Maliciouz went live on our little blog. And the beautiful new single Adrift by Phe! I hope you listened to those on the blog or on their own pages the day after. Wonderful stuff! O’ and me mentioned the Doom Charts Peroration, cause we were at Sonic Whip Festival went that one went live. Last but not least; we put the words online about the new Hypnosaur album Afterlife… And that beautiful album will see its FULL ALBUM PREMIERE on our little HiVe in only a few hours… You ready for that? Before you can prepare yourself, Afterlife bursts open like the soundtrack to a forbidden eighties horror film, overtures, big choruses and all, discovered in a dusty video store basement and ready to let loose on everything you ever wanted. It’s the new Hypnosaur, dragging you with them, into the Afterlife! 

Hypnosaur continues to prove they are one of the most exciting and unpredictable modern rock bands around. Ever since their explosive 2022 album Doomsday, the Warsaw-based quartet has blended the theatrical grandeur of classic eighties rock and metal with infectious hooks, psychedelic textures, stoner rock energy, and a healthy dose of humor. It immediately established the band’s identity with massive choruses, dramatic orchestration, and clear influences from Ghost and thus ABBA and Blue Öyster Cult… 

The 2024 four track Undead Invaders Born To Die In A Maze pushed their formula further, embracing darker synths, gothic atmospheres, eighties inspired keyboards and irresistible melodies. Even transforming synth-pop nostalgia into a stonerized dance-rock anthem on “Inwazja z Plutona” … Yes, Hypnosaur kept combining musicianship, theatrical flair, humor, and retro influences into a wildly entertaining and uniquely addictive rock experience.

And now there’s a new full length called Afterlife. On which they move back more towards Doomsday and their Ghost reminiscent sound. But where Ghost takes themselves so seriously you cannot help but laugh, it works the other way around with Hypnosaur. They do not take themselves serious at all, try to have as much fun as possible, and in doing so, you start take them serious and even hear the message that they sneak in here and there… 

Afterlife feels like the moment Hypnosaur fully embraces everything that made their earlier work so exciting in the first place. Ever since the towering hooks and theatrical swagger of Doomsday first introduced listeners to their strange and irresistible world, the Warsaw quartet has balanced stoner rock grit, eighties glam excess, gothic atmosphere and infectious melody with remarkable ease. But on Afterlife, those elements are sharper, darker, catchier and so much more confident than ever before.

Just listen to incredibly catchy opener and title track Afterlife and then hear it transition into the fireball that is Lieflower. The slow build that happens, and continues with Reality-141 and Look At The Balls. Which continues the highly melodic rock 'n roll structure, ups the dynamic, antsiness and power with every track that passes and gets you all ready for the two minute long DMT ride that is Danger. The most metal and punk track on the album perhaps. 

Sure, the shadow of Ghost once again looms, but proudly, over the record, especially in the massive choruses, eerie keyboard arrangements and dramatic vocal delivery, yet Hypnosaur never sounds like imitation. Instead, they channel the same love for seventies and eighties hard rock, AOR and occult theatricality into something unmistakably their own. Every track feels built for maximum impact: gigantic refrains, shimmering guitar flourishes, pounding drums and haunting synths collide in a kaleidoscopic storm of melody and darkness. But darkness on the light side of town... 

Hardwired for instance scales back on energy, but not on intensity, and implores some of that hallowed sound to make it sound huge and again sporting that incredibly earwurm quality. Humming this everywhere you go is not just an option, it's a given. Longest track on the record, Alone, once again opts for an eighties atmopshere, with its synth work, but goes more nineties once the bass gets to do its thing and then as we near the halfway mark, we are suddenly treated to more grunted and growled vocals. Another side of the Hypnosaur! 

What makes Afterlife work so well is how effortlessly Hypnosaur balances all that fun and those eighties atmospheres. The album is energetic, stylish and playful, but underneath the hooks lurks something genuinely hypnotic. It is retro rock worship transformed into a vibrant, modern and wildly addictive experience. One moment the band sounds like a glam metal gang speeding through neon-lit streets at midnight, the next they become psychedelic storytellers conjuring dark dreams beneath disco lights and almost operatic thunderclouds. Hypnosaur proves once again, they can do it all!

And we’re honored, to announce, that we’ll do the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Hypnosaur’s Afterlife together with the Polish Noise Magazine this Monday! So, check in, tomorrow, on May 25th to hear Afterlife a day early!

What a blast off for this Quick Fire Weekend! Spegeln is high-voltage seventies psychedelia, blues-drenched stoner rock and grimy garage swagger all melted into a wild, groove-heavy sonic assault. Mysteriously good, and apparently big in Japan!

Godzilla In The Kitchen – Nothing For None

The new Godzilla In The Kitchen album will be out on Tonzonen Records somewhere in October. But right now you can join the rampage with the first single Nothing For None! Ever more proggy, ever more metal, it is their alternative groove that will surely pull you in. And with the bass player stepping up to do the vocals Godzilla has turned into a smoke-belching beast, high on stoner grooves, progressive detours and furious social paranoia. Dead Hits – Real Love

Echodelick Records rules! But you already knew that! Originally released in 2025, the Real Love is a five track by Dead Hits. A Brooklyn-based stoner rock band delivering volume, grit, and groove straight from the underground, featuring former members of NAAM and La Otracina. Well, Dead Hits seem to stumble out of the New York psychic smog clutching fuzz-drenched riffs, wah-pedal hallucinations and garage-rock napalm. Real Love howls like a subway exorcism at sunrise! Acid-soaked psych, gutter-punk swagger and amplifier worship colliding in a glorious, feedback-screaming riot somewhere between cosmic revelation and total nervous collapse. Glorious!

Off on natural charge! Bon voyage! That's right, our very own in house poet and possible rap artist is off on a holiday, fueled by his own zealous energy and you might possibly stumble across him on some mic night in Dublin, May 25th! (The International Pub, Wicklow Street, starts at 20.00.) It's Ronny Dijksterhuis! And just before he ran out the door, he delivered another Quick Fire Friday segment in his very own style! And you know what that means... Things will get hot and heavy from here on in! 

On the brink of a highly anticipated holiday break, it's time to spit out another Quick Fire Friday. And I mean, a quick one, Lucky Luke style. So, no rambling about anything at all, just music, fired at you more rapidly than my keyboard's shadow could.

Much against my own expectations Burning Sister's latest single grabs me by the throat big time. Doom and hazy psychedelics are fighting over whether or not to engage in unholy matrimony (and associated activities). The result is a seven and a half minute song that's as hypnotic as it is elusive.

Shed-It - Siamese

'Siamese', the new single by Dutch band Shed-It, is a perfect mix of alternative rock and stoner. Heavy stoner grooves with melodic parts for memorability's sake and some short, subtle moments to give you the idea what it might feel like when you'd get enough time to let everything that happens sink in. Very diverse, highly energetic and above all a great song from start to finish.

Cannabus - 4Runner

Canadian stoner rawk trio Cannabus are shaping up to release their first full length 'Ride the Bus' on July 3rd. They already released two tasty singles which were straight up stoner fuzz with a raw edge. Third single '4Runner' puts the pedal through the floor with speedrock meets turn of the century stoner. All drenched in an overdose of fuzz of course.

On May 8th Go Down Records has released a remastered version of Cyborg Zero's 2021 self-released debut album 'Zero'. As an added bonus the re-released version starts with two brand new songs, one of which is this great stoner surf song 'Surfin' on Mars'. Turn up to 11 and shuffle those feet!
