It’s Monday again! Start of a new week and one chuck full of exciting things, boring rent paying assignments, party times, HiVe premieres and a brand new Doom Chart going live on Friday. Yes! At least one very cool premiere going live this week! And to get you just as excited as me at very start of the wek: get ready for the new Phe single this Thursday! Yes! Yes! Yes! 

Last week went fairly well, looking at what we managed to put online for the HiVe! Right? We mentioned the Wealthy Women album, Blackmail Damage, Deathchant, Hibushibire, Problem With Dragons, Undertong and Jon McGough graced us with a blurb for that wild Datura4 release. American Sharks play dirty punk rock'n'roll. This album is like taking your first cheap chemical drug trip - frantic, full of bright lights and noise and over too quickly, leaving you wanting more. Waving the flag that Electric Frankenstein and The Hellacopters hoisted high, American Sharks are like a shot of adrenaline mainlined into the brain. Remember when music was about energy, singalong choruses, dazzling guitar breaks, sweat and passion? These guys do. One of my favourite bands used to do this - they all had the surname of Ramone! This album make me feel happy and violent at the same time - a perfect combination. With a bass sound that Lemmy would be proud of, the songs cruise along with an unstoppable drive over which the vocals are spat out. They are not trying to be the darkest or brutal or whatever the fuck this months "core" scene is supposed to be. The Sharks just wanna play fast and powerful and kick some arse on the way. This is the good shit.

Hey you! Yeah, that's right .... you in the corner with the blank stare and drool coming out the corner of your mouth. You look the sort of person who would be into Earthless .... yep me too. I guess you like to light up a "doobie " and jerk off to Sonic Prayer .... yep, me as well.

Well, Belzebong are a much heavier version of the afore mentioned band - which means hard hitting riffs of heavy freakout acid guitar brilliance. Belzebong play instrumental slabs of heaviness and the question has to be asked ... is there enough going on to keep your attention wandering due to lack of vocals? In this case, the answer is a resounding yes!

The riffs are sharp and fuzzed, combing sun-baked desert sounds but with a heaviness drawn from sludge. Drones and atmospherics throb underneath the songs bringing in some space-rocks undercurrents. Songs are tight and varied always with enough variation within to stop your attention wandering. For me, this is a very early addition to my AOTY. 

This is the good shit.

Remember when music was about energy, singalong choruses, dazzling guitar breaks, sweat and passion? These guys do. Gluecifer play a hugely addictive mix of garage punk rock'n'roll. Like a shot of adrenaline mainlined into the brain, machine gun solos are fired out from fuzz pedals set to kill over insanely catchy but primitive riffs. Hey droogies, bang your heads up and down to these killer tunes which make you want to break things, drink heavily or just shout in strangers faces about this album you are listening to! Get hip to the high priests of boogie, smell the stench of amps turned up to 11 and worship at the altar of "fuck you!" ... This is the good shit!

The first of the Personal Top 20 lists to go live this year! Madman Tony Maim was too late sending his list this year. So, it wasn't added to the Top 20 Countdown of 2025. But since he did write one review for the HiVe in 2025, we still count Madman Tony Maim as a team member. And if not that, than as family... Working to hard at the hospital made him reduce his extracurricular activities. So, he's no longer involved with the Doom Charts and no longer doing his own Black Insect Laughter blog. Tojo Yamamoto play noise rock/post-hardcore - their own tag of "dancey noise rock" does not do justice to the explosion of power, aggression and raw slabs of sonic destruction that emerge when the play button is pressed. Dark rumbling bass which sounds like it is played through a distortion pedal or just turned up fucking loud mixes with the pounding drums to produce the platform from which the fuzzed up, on the edge-of-constant-feedback guitars can riff off. Ah man, the riffs in the songs are groove ridden monsters that make me want to break things while laughing like a maniac. Such evil joy and wanton glee are in the tunes - they lodge deep in your brain and make other music seem dull and insipid. Crooning, shouting, yelling - the vocals sound like David Yow performing under the influence of un-tested drugs, ranting about self loathing with the world and maybe oneself. The entire sound is deep, sludgey but with the uncomplicated song passages that contains all I love about noise rock. So much denseness is contained in these 6 tracks that when this album stops, the silence seems almost deafening.

Released at the very end of '23 but not listened by me until this year, 2024 kicks of with a huge slab of filthy proto-doom. Riffs chiseled out of ancient sacred stones and brought to life with fuzz boxes and distortion turned up to maximum overdrive set the bedrock for the gravel voiced vocalist to recite the tales of woe contained within - nod of the head to Lemmy. Solid production give the heaviness a pleasing solidity that should get everyone's head nodding. This is the good shit.

Hey, Clouds Taste Satanic are back - this means jams of freakout acid guitar brilliance. They play instrumental stoner with heavy vibes and as with all instrumental projects the question has to be asked - is there enough going on to keep your attention wandering due to the lack of vocals? In this case, the answer is a resounding yes. The guitar riffs are loud and nicely fuzzed, evoking the sunbaked desert sound but with a heaviness drawn from sludge. Drones and atmospherics throb underneath the songs, bringing in some space-rock undercurrents. Hypnotic slow tracks build up with thunderous drumming until distorted guitar start to wail with wonderful psych exploration. They tread the murky path of doom, heavy psych, raw stoner with a touch of sludge riffery. Big, slow, and powerful, Clouds Taste Satanic create some almost post-metal atmospherics to devastating effect. This combination of light and shade make for the tension that is evident on this album. Tales Of Demonic Possession. This is the good shit.

Two years ago, when Ozzy Osbourne released an album called Ordinary Man, we sort of assumed it would be the curtain call. We got the Stoner HiVe gang that help out now and again to say a few words about the record and then we basket weaved it all together. We refused to give any stars to the album, simply because it is our Lord Ozzy, and also because the album, well, had some pretty good stuff on it. It had its merits. As we concluded… This time around, we do it slightly different and have both Madman Tony Maim and Shastabeast aka Kyle SB say a few words about it… And of course I will spew my nonsense as well…

But surely, we had not expected to be back again, to write about another new Ozzy album only two years later. The man is in his seventies, had his greatest moments back in the seventies and now gives us a new thirteen track album that has stuff on it that is just simply put: pretty good! Its sometimes seems to ooze class and that’s not really strange when you consider the fact that it’s Ozzy Osbourne and he has managed to get a whole truckload of amazing artists to help out on the album. In the title track alone, we get Jeff Beck and Zakk Wylde on guitar, Robert Trujillo on bass and Chad Smith on drums. On other tracks Mike McCready and Josh Homme help out, but also Chris Chaney and the late Taylor Hawkins. Most important guests perhaps are Eric Clapton and Black Sabbath’s very own Tony Iommi. The Sabbath axe slinger can be heard on No Escape From Now and on Degradation Rules, both perhaps together with Evil Shuffle the best tracks on the album. Although that highly different from the rest song One Of Those Days with Clapton performing his magic, can also be viewed as one of the most interesting and worthwhile tracks. God Only Knows is the one that features Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Homme, where he and Zakk Wylde solo around and chasing after each other so it seems. Bluesy outro Darkside Blues, even though, the vocals are drenched in effects, shows what Ozzy might have sounded like if he had been an old blues legend from the past, strolling along side Robert Johnson onto the crossroads. Not sure if the devil would have wanted his soul though? Overall, the album has way more class and outright good rock on it, but there are surely some tracks that sound just a bit too easy. Like he is just doing it all again; without giving it that much of his attention. On the other hand, it’s our Lord Ozzy, with Iommi and featuring one of the final recordings of drummer Taylor Hawkins. Perhaps, it’s just an album we all should have…

Shastabeast aka Kyle SB:

"The latest from the Prince of Darkness, Patient Number 9, follows in the steps of his Ordinary Man release in many ways. Despite a plethora of big-name guests from Jeff Beck to Zakk Wyld, the Oz Man offers up mostly uninspiring, heard-this-before rock ballads peppered with a few fun riffs. Highlights do include "Immortal" with Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, which delivers some classic Ozzy energy with a high-octane riff and a dose of arena rock largesse, and Zakk Wylde's hard-hitting "Parasite" that showcases Ozzy's masterfully dark lyricism. Naturally, the two tracks with Tony Iommi are stronger than most, including a truly doomy "No Escape From Now", complete with extra crunchy riffs and a classic Sabbath midtempo run in the second half. Outside of a few memorable tunes, however, Patient Number 9 won't satisfy Ozzy fans looking for a return to his glory days, but rather find an abundance of pop-adjacent, manufactured sounding tracks that lack any real "oomph" from The Dark Lord, with the title track being one of the worst offenders."

Madman Tony Maim:

"The arrival of a new Ozzy album does not feature highly on my "things to get excited about"! Apart from the odd article about him he had pretty much fallen off my radar... until Joop asked if I would like to do a small review of Patient Number 9.  The album has a slew of guest guitarists - Jeff Beck, Clapton and for the first time on an Ozzy album two tracks with Tony Iommi. And... it all sounds really good. No more radio-friendly unit shifters, this album has Ozzy sounding heavier, darker and dare I say it - more metal than he has for a long time. Obviously the Iommi tracks are the highlights, but the album as a whole should please both new and old Ozzy fans plus classic, heavy rock head bangers in general. Lyrically there is a lot of musing on life and mortality but it all sounds like genuine heartfelt feelings In short, a great return to form."

So, I guess if we combine these three opinions to voice one uniform little thought about Patient Number 9, we perhaps should state that the album has no shock value, no awe inspiring moments... Or as Doktor420 said: "It doesn't inspire me at all - not for good, nor bad words..." Well, nothing good, nothing bad, except for the fact that it’s good enough to enjoy, cause it’s good enough for Ozzy and that means it’s good enough for you…  And hey, it might once again be his final album…

The May 2022 edition of the Doom Charts is here! Only two entries carried over from the Forty we published back in April. I’m sure you can do the math, but that means, 38 new albums listed! Of a total of 255 that received votes. Although that wild ECSTATIC VISION album carried over from that post of pure adoration called Peroration. Madman Tony Maim wrote back then:
 
“ECSTATIC VISION have a heavy, sun-drenched psychedelic/stoner sound that pays tribute to 70’s hard rock. Vocals are clean and put through reverb for a great trippy effect. Riffs are plentiful and the dirty fuzzed sound is perfect to get your head moving. But – before you start to get too comfortable, ECSTATIC VISION throw in passages that start to pile on the intensity with meatier playing which morph Hawkwind with The Stooges! This is the good shit.”

And he was right! It might be the final post from Tony for a while, for he is taking a breather. Catch you on the flipside Madman! But, we’re also welcoming back Tom Hanno and the join-up of Monster Riff founder Pat Schober. Welcome on board, let’s set sail for uncharted waters and listen to some good and heavy stuff!

Perhaps you noticed the lack of updates on the HiVe… Well, we’ve been doing a lot for the Doom Charts the past weeks. And with another little trip coming up; everything else had to take a backseat. But the Doom Charts schedule will soon return to normal and after we return around the 7th of February; so will the HiVe. Si senor, after that, Stoner HiVe will commence the normal show as well… But before we head out on another little trip, we leave you with yet another Quick Fire Friday about 2021 releases… Cause there is still so much out there that we love to mention! So, why not do loads at once during a Quick Fire Friday session?! Why not indeed! And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! Heidrún – Heidrún

It came out during the European summer this Mexican stoner and sludge gold; six tracks that steamroll you like the supermassive mother sludgers that they are! Indeed, I stole the Komatsu line to explain what Heidrún sounds like. No that they sound like Komatsu; but they do have that barreling attitude! Massive sludge, dark stoner and some prog and psych touches to keep things exciting. Damn good stuff! I should ask my buddy in Mexico to do an interview with these cats!

Dark Ocean Circle – Bottom Of The Ocean

The four from Stockholm, Sweden that are Dark Ocean Circle delivered their four track Bottom Of The Ocean EP in November of 2021. Hardrock, metal, with overtones of all that’s heavy. Stoner and a seventies approach give Dark Ocean Circle enough cool energy to power through the four tracks like a meteor. And down there on the Bottom Of The Ocean the stoner metal sound gritty, raw and majestically bluesy!

A first single from a new doom metal duo called Grey Moth. They hail from LA and embrace the natural balance of power between good and evil, dark and light, ugliness and beauty, life and death. Love & Hatred is the lead single for the album, recorded with Jack Shirley (Deafheaven) that will arrive somewhere in March. It’s doom. It’s dark. It’s grey and it’s mothy…

The Soul of Salem – From The Hands of Witches

The Soul Of Salem consists of four Italians that hail from Bari, way down south, where the heel of the boot begins. They released their From The Hands Of Witches EP when the first lockdown started. Back in 2020 and therefor never took the time to really promote it. Which is a shame, for the bluesy doom, the swaggering psych is enticing, it has soul and it deserves to be heard. What’s in a name right? The blues! The Deep Valley Blues! Well, the four from Catanzaro, Italy definitely play the blues, but a gritty, hardrocking, stoner infusing version that has some sludgy moments and some metal thunder. The eleven tracks on III will have no trouble luring you in; in fact once the bluesharp hits in that first song, you shall definitely be hooked! Hey, they did not make the December Doom Charts of 2021 for nothing! As Madman Tony Maim already remarked: “The blueprint is rock but Deep Valley Blues have stomped their own brand of riffage, producing a slew of meaty, heavy stomp monsters!”

As we mentioned before, the Stoner HiVe Team Members are all involved with the Doom Charts as well. So most of the personal lists already appeared there or will probably appear there in the near future. But we’re honored to be the first to post Madman Tony Maim’s Personal Top 20 first… Even though he might have posted the same one on his own Black Insect Laughter site… Hell, last year he even delivered a different one for the HiVe then the one for the Doom Charts, cause the HiVe, in his words back then: "has more latitude with the genres..." And we thank all the freaks in the HiVe for that! And we’re proud to have a list by the Madman, cause he has been active on his own Black Insect Laughter blog, been even more active with all his musical outlets like Guitars On Drugs of which Forbidden Place Records released a first CD called ‘Spies and Dub’ back in August of 2021. Back from the Island…

We returned yesterday from a family visit on the British Island… Wish was amazing, even though we had to mess the best line-up of Desert Fest Antwerp ever and Dirty Sound Magnet that played a venue near my home town. But we returned just in time to wish our very own Reek Of STOOM a very happy birthday. But not in time to be able to post that Most Listened To Last Week post we just did, but normally do on Monday. Dominated ofcourse by Maragda and Redscale! Those two album we were so honored to be able to do an International Premiere for. Both albums are stunning and I hope all of your went over to the blog and pressed play and now know that we are not just going overboard with the accolades again but that they really and truly are amazing… 

And because Madman Tony Maim suddenly fired up his Black Insect Laughter blog again, we immediately went and checked out the albums he posted about. Like that manic Kowloon Walled City about which he wrote: “Kowloon Walled City have carved out an impressive slab of hardcore/sludge/noise rock that is full of dirty, distorted tunes of disgust, regret and thoughtful anger. Feeling slightly less chaotic than past records, the band are not scared to strip away walls of noise to reveal passages of stark intensity which rely on vocals and picked guitar to set the scene before blasting out a barrage of atmospheric noise and aggression. Great production has melded the instruments into a massive force that sounds unstoppable - if there is any justice in this shitty world, this is a body of work that stands out in an overcrowded genre and which other bands will be measured against.” So go check it out! It’s a new release by the Madman! Yes, Tony Madman Maim’s, musical moniker as of 2020 is titled: Guitars On Drugs. Under that name the one man Madman operation has already released five recordings in 2020 and the first one of 2021 is called Fractured Thoughts. “Heavy guitars and riffs, pounding drums, snippets of movie clips, solos with fuzz turned up to 10 - all this matches the voices in my head that tell me nothing makes sense anymore!” Since the Madman has been fighting in the frontlines of the Covid pandemic and lives in the UK we can only agree to that statement; he knows the deal and knows how bad it got and still is on many levels. But even though the world around him seems to make less sense by the minute; his music does not. Perfectly synchronized, the drums, riffs, howling guitars and movie snippets tell you a moving requiem to a mind lost long ago. But don’t get that statement wrong; cause what takes center stage is without any doubt the pummeling drums, that perfect sounding copper in closing track Acid Shock and ofcourse the freakout guitars. Yes, those Guitars On Drugs!
