Morning! We left right after we premiered the full album Closer To The Sun by Phe and returned late last night from the stormy wastelands… Its been a wild few days and nights and we will be looking forward to settling in for hibernation settings over at Stoner HiVe… Which doesn’t mean we go sleep in a cave… Hell no, it means a little bit more HiVe time and less out of town time. At least, that’s what normally happens around this time… But life has a way of throwing curveballs of late… So… Let’s see… And listen… To all those great albums out there!

As mentioned we were honored to premiere the full album for Phe! Did you listen yet? But that wasn’t the only premiere… Also that wild doom psych folk album by Masion Dieu went live over on the HiVe! Which we reviewed a day early. Just like that awesome Moon Destroys album! Let’s see which albums we can mention this week… But I’m sure there will be one or two! And I am looking forward to Friday… For all the right reasons… How about you?

Below is the playlist for Week 44, featuring a selection of albums and tracks from my Bandcamp collection that are currently available to listen to...

Morning. Hectic times continue. Rent paying work, family obligations and rush assignments that need to be finished way too quickly all take away from our time to HiVe. Which fills my heart with a quiet sorrow. Even more so, because I have a bunch of review and posts almost done and I foresee another week or very limited time… This time due to some travelling and an interview article with DeWolff that needs to be finished before I leave… But we will try and will do our best…

Last week saw the Doom Charts Peroration for September go live, a review for the new Adjustable Mustard and a post about that wild new King Buffalo single. And of course the announcement for the deliriously fun festival that is inching ever closer: Helldorado! Will we see you there? Be sure to check in again soon, cause I know… For certain… That a premiere is waiting just around the corner… And it’s a wild one! Just like those ten bands and their albums listed above these words…

None of the new albums are currently in my Bandcamp collection... Does the Bandcamp Playlist work for anyone anyway? Or should we do a Spotify playlist again?

Morning! Besides the rent paying work, most of last week was dedicated to the new August edition of the Doom Charts! Did you find your new favorite album yet? And premieres! We did two last week and in a few minutes we have another one. For a video this time! This week, we’re finally putting a new interview online. We love psychedelic free rock adventures. So when Phantom Logic came out swinging together with Earthless's Isaiah Mitchell, we had to annoy them with some sill questions. So, stay tuned for that! Stoomfest Festival is happening in a few weeks, still a few tickets left and we hope you listened to the Full Album Premiere for Vulture Neck and the new Phe single which premiered last Thursday. We love heavy music! Go check’m out if you haven’t already. And the Top 10 featured above. There’s a reason those went on repeat last week…

And if you like our new artwork... Visit Monuments In Ruin for more of his art... There's even a very cool section called Sketchy Thoughts!

Number 19

Number 19

The Lord Knows we love that Tidal Wave album that made the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2023 on Number 20. No less than 768 albums received votes and many of them received multiple votes. Which I guess means that all of them were loved by many. And on Number 19 we find many! No less than three albums made by four bands had the exact same amount of points; only a mere 10 points more than Tidal Wave. Psychedelic and alternative, bluesy and classic, expansive and cinematic. Three albums moving in very different directions but all heavy in their own way…

That one heavy psychedelic album felt as much as living entity as the title hinted at, atmospheric by default and with such soaring leads and floating vocals, you would surely and immediately sail away with those dynamic and laidback dirge sounds to a state of blissful being.

That other album proved to be yet another great blues and classic hardrock record from the boys that have been at it for quite some time. Slowly but decisively moving into that classic rock territory with every album they release. Soulful and retro, the album opts for more ease and slow tunes and less boogie and groove. They boys wanted everything more mellow and open, and they achieved that without any doubt.

The expansive and cinematic album is a collaboration between two bands that both deliver their absolute forte on every of the seven tracks. But these seven need to be digested in one sitting; for this is one grand spacious and wild adventure. Controlled, powerful chaos, like a perfect swirling Taoistic ritual. The two bands manage to weave an intricate and extremely detailed psychedelic tapestry that feels like you are on a majestic journey into the outer reaches of everything. Art in every sense of the word.

On Number 19 we find…

The Number One album of 2012

The Number One album of 2012

Before we start the Countdown of 2019 we look back at those past 10 years of Stoner HiVe. We know it is now the eleventh edition of the Countdown. But we celebrate 10 years. 10 years of heavy riffs, romps and stomps! 10 years of heavy magic! That all started back in 2009 when the blog started, just so we would have a vehicle to count down the best 20 albums of 2009. The edition of 2012 had 56 lists to tally which of course made the outcome even more valid then when we started three years earlier. That list, deduced out of the lists sent in by 56 heavy music fiends,  started with Major Kong – Doom For The Black Sun on Number 20. It featured Graveyard and their Lights Out album on Number 3 and the amazing Kadavar album by well, Kadavar on Number 2. For the entire Top 20, visit the Countdown So Far post on Stoner HiVe… But what album ended up on the Number One position back in 2012... We wrote:

“I guess there’s only one way and one place to end this list truly righteous and beautifully poetic. For it is the year of Sweden and of a lust for that vintage feeling of musical magic. So it is fitting that these guys that sparked so many of the bands we listen to ended up on the Number One position. For they themselves honor the music that inspired them and most of the other great releases this year. With twenty points more than Kadavar they pay homage to the heavy and darkened sounds of yore and exhume a dusty brown air of nostalgia but never one that is stale or forlorn. In fact their vintage atmosphere has a loud and modern feeling to it. Which is something they might have to thank their new members for. It is mystical music that speaks of ancient legends and conjures up visions of true artists fighting their way out of kaleidoscopic straightjackets of their own making. And cast away they dare to take flight in a new fashion that takes some getting used to. But once the buttons are buttoned; it is snug and fits like a glove!”

And we were honored to have Madman Tony Maim revisit the album and yell something about it in our ears… “After a five year absence, Witchcraft returned with an album that took them from their retro-rock roots into a band that sounded modern and heavy. A cleaner sound that kept the distortion up but the muddiness at bay. I seem to remember a lot of old time fans did not like this change but then, as now – grow up. I like it when bands evolve and do not keep churning the same album out again and again. These tracks have stood the test of time and writing this review gave me an excuse to blast it out again at full volume.”

The Number One album of 2011

The Number One album of 2011

Before we start the Countdown of 2019 we look back at those past 10 years of Stoner HiVe. We know it is now the eleventh edition of the Countdown. But we celebrate 10 years. 10 years of heavy riffs, romps and stomps! 10 years of heavy magic! That all started back in 2009 when the blog started, just so we would have a vehicle to count down the best 20 albums of 2009. The edition of 2011 had 48 lists to tally which of course made the outcome even more valid then when we started two years earlier. That list, deduced out of the lists sent in by 48 heavy music fiends,  started with DeWolff – Orchards / Lupine on Number 20. It featured Lo-Pan and their Salvador album on Number 3 and the amazing Hisingen Blues album by Graveyard on Number 2. So what album beat even that one to the Number One position back in 2011... (For the rest of the Top 20 of 2011, visit the Countdown So Far post on the blog...) We wrote:

“We have come to the absolute winner of 2011. The gold medallist so to speak. These young puppies ended up as top dog after a gigantic sprint in the end in which they overtook Graveyard, Skraeckoedlan and Lo-Pan, which occupied the first place for the first few weeks. Their sophomore album keeps in vein with all the retromania records that have been released in 2011; but this time around they use the seventies doom variation foremost and add to this a fuzzy groove that surfs over the sound waves like a mad Hawaiian sea cowboy. And even with their progressive sound structures they still remain droning and hypnotic with an ever present cosmic and psychedelic feel to it. It gives new meaning to the word heavy and uses the blues roots in a distinctive, personal and excellent way. It flows in a melodic way that is unparalleled and delivers after every build up in their own way without aiming to be explosive all the time. They know how to be subtle, they know what silence is all about and know when the fires of old must burn and burn and char and destroy. As if these guys know the old soul of the world and have been here for many a year…”

And this record, to be honest, still gets spun on a fairly regular basis. It was the album that started the infatuation with the three from Elder. Dead Roots Stirring still has something special. It might truly be one of the best ten albums of the decade. The progressive side of it offset by the psychedelic meandering brings out the best of these three. It soon become this otherworldly current that has you envisioning recurring riffs, recurring hooks that aren’t really there or are they? And after that seminal release they took the world by storm nobody seemed to be able to outmaneuver Elder. And guess what, it still is one hell of a record!

Number 4

Number 4

As we mentioned on position Number 5, where we found Longing To Be The Mountain by King Buffalo, the jumps in points get bigger and bigger now. We jump almost forty points to reach Number 4. An album, which, I must confess, I had definitely not expected this high. Ofcourse it’s good and the band has been making the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown with almost every album they released. Reaching Number 10 in 2015, Number 3 in 2012 and Number 2 in 2011. And we must admit we have loved everyone of those albums and one of them has become an all time favorite. And it wasn’t because the band had announced they were calling it quits some six months prior to this release. No, it’s simply because it seemed like the album had not been making the waves like all their others did before this one. But I’m glad to see it arrive at Number 4. Cause they are back! And with knives in their teeth! We can state that all their records are wild and wonderful, but that some of the sharp edge and danger slowly dissipated the during the course of their albums. It’s back now. On this album they sound much more chased, hunted and on the run. They sound like they have something to prove again. That there is no peace on their mind. Gritty, bluesy, grungy hard rock and with that ever-prevalent love for the seventies that these cats always displayed. Does the new drummer change the sound? No, he sounds like the perfect replacement for the old one, he continues the wildness we love and injects it with a new razor-sharp edge! Before we enter the Top 3 we have to deal with Number 4!

Graveyard – Peace
Nuclear Blast – 2018
Rock, Hard, Seventies, Blues
Rated: ****

Do you remember where you were? When the earth shook around you? When the walls came crashing down? When life as we know it, seemed to have lost all meaning? Yes, do you know where you were when Graveyard said they were calling it quits? September seems to be one of those months that evokes bad energy and worse weather. Well, it was also the month Graveyard said they would stop their majestic and soulful ride. Luckily, they announced their come back only a few months later! Pfew! Now, all was right in the world again. Well, almost right. We had to hear what new drummer Oskar Bergenheim, who we already knew from the Truls Mörck album and Den Stora Vilan, but also played for Slowgold and Togus Band, would bring to the Graveyard sound. Well, rest assured, they are back! And with knives in their teeth! We can state that all the Graveyard records are wild and wonderful, but that some of the sharp edge and danger slowly dissipated the during the course of their albums. It’s back now. On Peace, they sound much more chased, hunted and on the run. They sound like they have something to prove again. Gritty, bluesy, grungy hard rock and with that ever-prevalent love for the seventies that Graveyard always displayed. Does Oskar Bergenheim change the sound? No, he sounds like the perfect replacement for Axel Sjöberg, he continues the wildness we love and injects it with a new razor-sharp edge! Graveyard is back!

Nummer 10

Number 10

“Well, we like to let down our hair and pep it up at the dances, but we keep it slower when we broadcast. We have to please everybody, and that softer music appeals to the larger amount of people. It's like eating too much cake. You have to have your steak too.” ~ Vaughn Monroe

As we pass The Machine with four points and enter the Top 10 it feels only fitting to let someone else do the talking about this album. Also, because we talked a lot about this band, this year and in other years. Cause they ended up on the third position in 2012 and on the second position in 2011. So here’s Charlie Tooth: “Apparently the only thing Dylan, the Animals and Derek And The Dominoes have on these Swedes is that they didn't make the list! Their 2015 LP is a perfect example of why classic never really goes out of style. How can a band that started around 2006 sound so classic? My guess is pure feel, emotion with a sense of natural playing and writing ability. Their 2015 album is pure and clean. It's not surprising these blues rockers rank so high on the  Stoner HiVe people's picks! a truly cool blues based machine that set themselves apart from the Iommi worshiping guitar bands!” Number 10 is taken up by…

Graveyard – Innocence & Decadence

Graveyard – Innocence & Decadence
Nuclear Blast – 2015
Rock, Hard, Seventies, Stoner
Rated: ****

Everybody out there will surely still be in love with their 2011 album Hisingen Blues. And ever since that album the boys from Sweden can do no wrong. Although some of us, the undying Graveyard lovers, did think Lights Out did lose some of its raw and gritty edge in comparison to Hisingen Blues. But now they return with Innocence & Decadence, and even though one could concede it’s a new version of what they did before. It is a damn good version. Thick seventies grooves, heavy hooks and that growling voice of Joakim Nilsson that can just as easily turn into that bone-chilling screech. And they can just as easily pull back on the throttle and hit just as hard with a ballad like Too Much Is Not Enough. So yes, Graveyard is in great form, better than on Lights Out and almost as good as on Hisingen Blues. But from now on, let’s stop comparing their releases to the genre-transcending album of a decade and take everything on its own classic merit. Cause Innocence & Decadence is damn freakin good and something we can listen to until the end of time…

Truls Mörck – Truls Mörck

Truls Mörck – Truls Mörck
Fetish – 2015
Rock, Psych, Sixties, Seventies, Folk
Rate: ****

As lead guitarist on the first Graveyard album he played an important part for the sound of the band but was soon afterwards replaced by Jonatan Ramm. He returned back to the band this year as the new bassist since Rikard Edlund has not yet returned to the fold. In between those moments he played with Den Stora Vilan and released a self-titled solo record this year. We are talking about Truls Mörck. On it we hear a very subdued version of psychedelic rock, folk and blues that serves as a time warp towards the sixties and seventies on many occasion and only warms the blue cold atmosphere that this Scandinavian album unfolds with a small flickering candlelight. It might be a cold album, but because it feels so intimate and precious it also become cozy and secretive. As if you are stuck inside his pocket as he sits on a stool and composes his stories. Don’t think you will be getting the hints of proto metal here. There is none and no driving speed like Graveyard produces. No, this moves towards  psychedelic folk and campfire storytelling. And it is done so well…

Number 3

Number 3

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned…” Romans 5:12

Should you be a gambling man than at one point in your career you will always cross the wrong wires and find yourself burned to a cinder by an electric firestorm. But you will also come across that sure shot; that one lucky guess that isn’t lucky at all. So I ain’t going to bet anyone if they can guess where the guys from Number 3 come from. Cause I am pretty sure seeing as almost half of the list hails from that beautiful country in Scandinavia that you know which that might be. We climb almost twenty-five points and are treated to groovy blues inspired by the seventies and driving stoner grafted on that happening feeling. And then to think they already made it to the Number Two position last year! Let’s hope they have another album ready for us in 2013!!!

Graveyard - Lights Out

Graveyard – Lights Out

Graveyard – Lights Out
Nuclear Blast/PIAS – 2012
Rock, Hard, Psychedelic, Blues, Stoner
Rated: ****

After Norssken broke up in 2000 we were presented with the amazing Witchcraft and Albatros. But after five years the members of Albatros were bored with the grim musical course they were sailing and they buried that project. So in 2006 Graveyard was founded and a year later we were treated to their debut album which featured tasty songs where the guys paid homage to the dark seventies. On the follow-up which was released last year called Hissingen Blues they waved goodbye to even more darkness and the blues got hugged even more tightly resulting in an album that got hailed as one of the absolute best of 2011. The amount of fans grew explosively and everyone was excited when a new album was announced this year called Lights Out. And justly so, cause those expectations are almost completely met with only one small point of regret: parts of the raw and gritty edges have disappeared. But it were those dangerous gravelly and moments that gave Graveyard its amazing sound. But nonetheless; Lights Out is yet another amazing Graveyard album! So fellas can we expect yet another one next year?!

Number 2

“I’ll be pulling a pink elephant out of ma hat soon. But before I do; let me turn you onto these majestic blues sounds.”

Number 2

One more to go before we get to the gold medallist of 2011. Personally I sort of missed these runner-up guys completely when the album came out. But after a lot of you cats out there had these in their top three or higher I revisited this dark place and was awestruck. I get it now and wonder how I could have missed them the first time around. This retro loving foursome gives new meaning to dueling guitars, seventies rock and full carrying driving rhythms. It is the sound of their first release that has been battered on the road and matured due to all the trials and tribulations. It is the final and best testament released this year that there is nothing new under the sun and that when this retromania is done right, nothing can best it. A pure ode to righteous rock and the music we live by. This is mastered!
