Witching Buzz’s A Tribute To…

Witching Buzz’s A Tribute To…

As Witching Buzz and Grand Sounds Promotion announce the third installment in their A Tribute To series, we realized we never mentioned the earlier two. And although we now look forward to hearing all those bands pay homage to Sleep on the soon to be released A Cathedral of Smoke: A Tribute to Sleep, we can still dive head first into the renditions of all those wild Ozzy Osbourne songs from the second A Tribute To and everything related to Kyuss from the very first one…

The journey of praise started with A Spaceship Landing: A Tribute To Kyuss. And let’s be honest, Stoner HiVe, you, me, would not be here if it had not been for that legendary band. And the cover album before you right now will in no way add anything to that legend. And if you are of the mind that all Kyuss songs are sacred relics and should not be messed with, you might want to keep on walking...

For everyone else, are you ready for a fuzz-drenched playground where underground bands tear into these classics, keep their ear to the Kyuss beat or reshape them in their own dusty image? Sonic Wolves for instance rip through Thumb with swagger and sharp guitar flair. While Rhino stays close to the original Green Machine and on some level of course therefor does the most homage. Poste942, the main man from the band also responsible for the artwork of the series, give Demon Cleaner an eighties touched tumbling over and over kind of groove. Isaak’s Odyssey version hits every riff out of the park and so does Fuzz Evil and their version of Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop. Versions that could one day make the world famous Stoner HiVe posts named The Cover That Could. Grin! But yeah, you will probably have your own favorite after listen to all twenty Kyuss songs done right. And perhaps a new favorite band if the names that riff you wild, where unknown to you before this session… So, open a can, find a cactus and let the desert spin around you…

Iron Man’s Anthem: A Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne followed last February. It’s only been a bit more than half a year since the Legend gave us his final bow. And on this tribute there are twenty-two bands paying homage to the great and only Oz. And where the Kyuss tribute featured bands I already knew, this one sports some lesser known ones. And that is perhaps another reason why these albums are fun, you might just discover a band and dive into their own work after hearing a fine rendition of a famous song. Even though it might be a different reason than expected, the Kazoo-laced and Elvis-infused madness in second track The Wizard for instance. But that’s of course what Heaven and Hellvis from Scotland is all about. Luckily this is followed by a faithful rendition of N.I.B. by Rainbow Bridge and puts you back on track to enjoy the album. A more stoner and sludge approach to Paranoid by Corruption out of Poland hits the spot right. Poste942 is still roaming around in a cloud of the eighties, but this time more metal and absolutely compelling with their No More Tears version. Will every of the twenty two renditions keep you from immediately turning to the original, absolutely not! But most of them are definitely full of passion and sound like they wanted to do right by the one true king. I guess there’s enough proof here for all that reckless devotion and their love for the way in which the man rattled your bones, made amps explode and bats take a detour whenever and wherever the ominous sounds of Black Sabbath were heard…

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s been a few weeks since we did the last Quick Fire Friday round! But we’re here again and we dare to say it’s another one that will singe and sizzle! Another selection of beautiful singles, videos and EP’s to check out over the weekend. That’s right, we’ve got another one of those Quick Fire Friday segments for ya! For there is so much great music out there, we cannot ever do it all justice. So we came up with a way to shoot out a quick blurb and hope it will entice you to listen to the single or the entire discography! So here it is… Another Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Grin – Unshut

Remembering that damn fine show at Into The Void Festival, Leeuwarden last year gave me a huge smile. Listening to the new single Unshut by two piece behemoth Grin made it even bigger! It’s the third single to the Acid Gods album which will be released May 30th on The Lasting Dose Records. Sludge tones, psychedelic doom and distorted by so much fuzzed out noise it will leave you breathless. Just like that live gig did…

Check out the many headed Australian Blackfire band and their new single Billions. Out on Golden Robot Records its has the good groove, the right view and a whole lot of easy rocking vibes…

All India Radio - Catch The Breeze feat. Lisa Gibbs (SLOWDIVE cover)

Giving you all the right kind of shivers! Mixing all that shoegaze, ambient, slowcore and post rock into a snow globe of fluttering tones. It’s the Tasmanian duo All India Radio featuring Lisa Gibbs (Useraus), turning the Slowdive song Catch The Breeze into an even dreamier and mysterious waltzing flurry…

Stone Clones – Numb Me Out

We just mentioned a band from Australia and a duo from Tasmania. Best be mentioned New Zealand as well in that case! And we’re lucky that Hamilton, New Zealand fourpiece Stone Clones just released a new track called Numb Me Out. A slow, desert strolling, stoner rocking song that has infectious pop sensible blow outs and a gumshoe storytelling vibe. Love it!

Alien Sun – You

The last releases by Fabio Epifani and his London, UK born Alien Sun project stem from 2008. But now he’s sending a harrowing new tune into the world called You. Accompanied by an even more disturbing video. Fully made with AI it’s a ‘story about detachment and indifference in modern times. A story about all of us.’  Frightening and distressing, also because some of the images produced hit hard and show the capabilities of the AI thing is growing with every second that passes. And every bomb dropped…

Poste 942 - Zootiehead (Mindfunk Cover)

A new single by French crazies Poste 942! And as always, damn interesting! This one is part of a tribute album for Mindfunk. Its called Dropped From The Sky - A Tribute To MINDFUNK, comes out on Bitume Productions and featuring fifteen underground bands. Love me some underground, love some Mindfunk and love me some Zootiehead!

Replica Jesus – Bonegrinder

Replica Jesus already enticed you all with that February single The Rope. And now, before a new full album, surely to arrive in the future, will be out, they slay with a second track called Bonegrinder. The Derby, UK four have their own style of punked up stoner and grunge. Bonegrinder is Replica Jesus at his best! You’d best believe!

The Devil's Cabana Boiz – Retox

London's finest weekend warriors bringing you some groove and fuzz! It’s party time! The Devil’s Cabana Boiz got some more gold for you all. It’s called Retox, sporting kick ass lyrics, vocals and a flurry of great riffage. Accompanied by even greater key work! Hear that walk, that pretty little ditty on the keys. Makes me crack a smile! And if I would have had botox, crack my face…

Poste 942

Atomic Vulture

Another week in the books. Another week that flew by and where we had little time to really get down and dirty for Stoner HiVe. One reason is that we had to have Greif, the new Zeal & Ardor record on repeat due to an upcoming interview with the man. No punishment at all! What a record! And when Psychlona sends their new release Warped Vision you can bet your ass we will spin that as much as possible as well. And Ruff Majik, Moth Eater won’t come out till early October, but let me state the obvious: it’s a magical rock ‘n roll battering ram once again! The new The Anomalys record Down The Hole comes out in September and it’s another high riding piece of rock! Damn, loads of good stuff arriving in the near future! But others have already arrived and we mentioned a few, like the new Starspawn of Cthulhu, expertly written by Jon McGough or the new Poste 942, Burnt Lung and Midnight Whiskey Massacre. We mentioned that wild single by The Devil's Cabana Boiz and we mentioned that we will be doing a FULL ALBUM PREMIERE by Kahfa this Wednesday! Hmmm, looking at this short screed, I guess we did not waste ever spare minute of the week passed. Let’s see if we can do better this week. Have a great one everyone!

Poste 942 - #chaleurhumaine

Poste 942 - #chaleurhumaine
Self-released – 2024
Rock, Hardrock, Stoner, Blues, Grunge
Rated: ****

#chaleurhumaine, the new album by French outfit Poste 942. A nod towards Christine And The Queens perhaps? Or a nice call for more humanity? For more warmth, generosity and kindness towards one another. Something the world and humankind can definitely use. Always and now even more so. It’s perhaps also a reaction to the fact that the band had to stop playing live once that pandemic thing hit? Remember that? Cause they were ecstatic to finally take the stage again last week at La Sainte Rock Festival (picture above) after many years without a live gig. They did release singles during the past years. And those showed definite musical progress and change. Big change! Biggest change, they had vocalist Virginie D join the team and her voice immediately took the sound in a different direction. Most composed, as if the rural punk and stoner rock metamorphosized into something more melodic, a bit symphonic and even catchy. Did you hear the stand alone La Danse De Fous single for instance? Or Fada Fighters, the fourth track on the new album? La Ligne perhaps, number nine on the album? Or the second track on the album and the first one that featured Virginie D, released in September 2022 La Gorgone, a big step forward for the outlaw rockers calledPoste 942. Collected all on the album, twelve tracks and over forty five minutes of heavy rock. Hard rock, as a high note, the stoner influences as apparent as the grunge and punk, it’s now often turning more metal as well. Exchanging some of that grit from earlier times for something sexier and more danceable. Did we already mentioned there’s a lot of change to find within the new Poste 942? But don’t fret, the old Poste 942 spirit is also still there, but it has aged like fine wine…

(ps. The live picture at the top of the lovely Virginie D, taken at La Sainte Rock Festival by Vincent Driancourt)

La Sainte Rock Festival

You have the lovely dream, partying in front of a stage, in the south of France, listening to all these great bands! And then you wake up. And immediately realize you do not live in Beaurecueil, France and you will not be present for La Sainte Rock Festival. Tomorrow. Saturday 13th of July! And that you will have to miss all the amazing bands taking the stage… But maybe you do?! Cause even if you have the remote possibility to go, how could you pass up on a gig that features: SBRBS, Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel, Rodeo Punch, Poste 942, Damantra and Cachemire!! Great food, great drinks, great people and great freaking music!

Monday Monday! It’s been hectic! But we’re almost settled in and will surely be soon enough, after another grueling week ahead of  us. Will need another holiday soon! Check out the ten albums above, they all kick ass and we already wrote a few words about Julie Christmas’s new record and the amazing debut by Mould. Soon, more words will arrive and we shall also continue with that Stoner Hype thing on Facebook, you know, writing a sentence or two about the Numbers 40 to 26 on the June Doom Charts… So… Soon… The show will continue! Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

We’re approaching the end of the year fast! And that Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2023 will also commence in about a week. Yes, y’all! There is still time to send in your lists! To our email: stonerhive@Hotmail.com Deadline is December 13th. So, that means, next Wednesday! Get cracking on making that list, checking it twice or not, and sending it over. Making the yearly Top 20 Countdown more valid with every year we do this! It also means that gigantic folder of albums, EP’s and singles we would have loved to have mentioned throughout the year, will remain that way. There simply is too much, and we simply do not have the time to do more. The small thing we can do of course, is another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday round! A small amount of words to get the good word out! The good word about something heavy and something cool! Check it out below… And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. But here it is… Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Venus Volcanism – Tissue

Out on Submersion Records, the debut album of Crete musician Venus Volcanism aka Rena Rasouli titled “Tissue”. Written and recorded, only 40KM from the Artic Circle, in Iceland's northernmost town, Siglufjörður, for over 2 years. The avant-garde, ambient, electronic album is filled with ethereal vocals, synthesisers and slow arpeggios, with natural soundscapes; the crescendo of an active volcano in Fagradalsfjall, bubbling mud pools in the geothermal area of Seltún, the ebb and flow of Dýrafjörður's ocean and haunting echoes of frozen lakes and migrating birds. A perfect album for the cold December month to get lost in and almost disappear completely…

Beyond This Earth – Portraits Of The Absurd

More Greece for ya! We mentioned the first single The Overseer back in August, and now Portraits Of The Absurd by Greek five piece Beyond This Earth is out. Almost fifty-five minutes of metal! Stoner metal, sludge tones, a whole lot of attitude and these sudden bursts of progressive and symphonic magic. We called them sludge motherfuzzers last time we mentioned them, and that moniker sticks. But that extra level of guitar work is something else and makes Beyond This Earth, stand out, beyond and above!

Autogramm - Music That Humans Can Play

Something else, something eighties, something new wave, indie, powerpop and Canadian. The Vancouver four called Autogramm delivered their ten track Music That Humans Can Play album back in November on Stomp Records and Beluga Records. Influence hints splayed all over their record, it’s a feelgood flashback without ever becoming pastiche. And that’s saying something when they obviously also make fun becoming just that… Good for December, and yes, another album that can save you from Whamageddon!

Poste 942 – La Danse De Fous

A single, a video, by those French punk, stoner and speed rocking outlaws called Poste 942. This time however they turn up their theatrical side, their symphonic and opera side. They’ve been changing, everything is always changing, but since the arrival of vocalist Virginie D, changing, eclectic and grandiose have become words we can associate with Poste 942. And that is something we definitely had not envisioned when we first heard Extended Play back in 2014. La Danse De Fous is a must see and must hear video!

Ash Eater – Any Port In A Storm

Trashy, psychedelic, skate, punk, it’s all applicable to the Ash Eater sound. The new Any Port In A Storm track’s main riff brings to mind their Bad Trip song and video from 2019. But it is definitely not a rehash of what came before, cause the sound has grown to become even foggier, wilder and bordering on the maniacal and metal. Something about this track makes it sound classic and dangerous at the same time. And even though we can see the captain smoke, we’re uncertain we will reach port…

Solothurn – Servitude

Released in November, the debut EP Servitude by Belfast, Ireland five-piece Solothurn. Nineties alternative metal, with grunge influences as well as some stonerrock touches. Started in 2022, it’s immediately obvious that this band is comprised out of members that earned their heavy rock spurs elsewhere. And they did! With bands like Involution, Electric Red, Annapurna, Toska and Mondo Generator. Mondo Generator? Isn’t that Nick Oliveri’s band? Si, senor, cause on second guitar in Solothurn, we can hear Simon Beggs, who played in Mondo around 2006-2007 and mastered the Dead Planet album. And these here three tracks, have the ability to make you entirely anxious to hear where they will take a certain, riff, lead or vocal line. As well as anxious to hear more Solothurn!

Eight Foot Manchild - We're Goin' Out On A High Note

We only mentioned their Shrine Of The Orange Sunn EP from July. But Eight Foot Manchild has been around since 2022 and making serious waves as the one and only doombrass band! We're Goin' Out On A High Note is a new and fine four track EP to cement that surging energy! And for some reason, the manner of vocals in that amazing title track remind of Clutch’s Neil Fallon. In fact that entire track does! Or perhaps a lot does in some weird way. But then, funkier and completely doom brassed! Eight Foot Manchild strikes again!

Flamebearer – Taste Hell

The London, UK quartet Flamebearer hits you hard with their Taste Hell single. Their hardrock and metal, has that eighties, almost hair metal touch, but delights in barreling down the line with a doom thunder. It’s the first single for upcoming album Brazen, produced by Wayne Adams (producer of Green Lung's recent 'This Heathen Land'), which is set for release early next year. And if the riffs are as big as on Taste Hell, or the choruses as huge, Brazen will be gigantic!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Been a while since we did one of these. The last one was somewhere in April I guess. But it’s Friday now, so let’s get the fire burning with some Quick Fire Friday action! You know the deal, a small amount of words to help spread the good and heavy music that’s out there. Cause we realize there’s just so much out there! There is no way we can mention it all or even a small percentage of all that heavy stuff we all love. Well, this way, we hope to spread just a tiny bit more…  And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. But here it is… Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Orbital Escape System - 10.000 Tons in Zero Gravity

Been grooving hard to Orbital Escape System’s 10.000 Tons in Zero Gravity, single. The three from Brussels, Belgium take you with them on a wild adventure through the endless void. Spacious, psychedelic stonerrock, completely instrumental and highly evocative. Your feet will not be touching the ground for very long, indeed, soon you will take off and you will fly! Cause Orbital Escape System is damn fly! And they’re currently re-recording all their singles, and making them even flyer… For a full-sized album to come soon!

Cult of Sobek – Cult of Sobek EP

What we have here… Is the debut EP by Edinburgh blackened death doom outfit Cult of Sobek. “Edinburgh-based crocodilian triumvirate, Cult of Sobek, emerged from subterranean swamps in the cursed year of 2022. Conjuring a hypnotic swirl of deep ritual rhythms, catatonic bass fuzz, and deliriously delayed six-stringed sorcery, the band channel the likes of doomed-out grandmasters; Electric Wizard, detuned fantasy colossi; Conan, and Sabbo-sludge Toad – Worshippers; Goblinsmoker.” And that my dear friends, says it all! Prepare yourself from some intense, dark, damp and extremely dank riffs, prepare to be submerged and swallowed whole by these three Cultists and their three songs!

Massasauga - The Only Good Wizard is a Dead Wizard

We were too late coming to grips with the new Massasauga duo EP, otherwise we would have surely voted for it as well for the June Doom Charts. But luckily, enough Contributors did, reached the 24th spot and the honorable Frazer Jones wrote a few words about it. So, go on and read them if you haven’t already, cause we’re only going to add that we also hear this occult touch, of course thanks to the subject, but also because of the sound coloring. Proto metal, by way of blues, garage and something highly infectious! Damn good, damn fuzzy stuff!

Damage Therapy – The Railyard

We love Kentucky! Lexington, Kentucky and the surrounding area has been sprouting great bands for the Heavy Underground for what seems forever. And new arrival, for me personally, is Damage Therapy, they’re about to release their third full-sized album called Panacea. It arrives in September, but the first single The Railyard is available right now! Fuzzy psychedelic garage noir and freak out stonerrock. Poste 942 – Fada Fighters

We saw a memory pop up about a little write up we did for their Long Play release back in 2017. So, yes, we’ve been following and digging those French crazies from Poste 942 for a long time. Recently their ranks we complemented by Virginie D and they released the very cool La Ligne. And now, they’re back with Fada Fighters! Opening with a My Sharona smash ‘n grab, the track speeding up later, kicking it in overdrive, punking your ears and skateboarding all over your soul! Poste 942 - La Ligne

Poste 942 - La Ligne

We’ve been following these punk outlaws, these outback stoner rocking crazies for quite some time now, and have always dug whatever Poste 942 came up with. As you can read in our coverage of their Extended Play EP from 2014, their Extended Play 2 from 2016 and the Long Play they released in 2017. But this new single and video is new territory for Poste 942! Well, they already released their La Gorgone single in December 2022, the first time we got to meet Virginie D as the new vocalist for Poste 942. But La Ligne takes all that grunge and punk we knew they did to new stoner rocking heights! The addition of these French vocals make La Ligne that perfect chased rock song! You know the one, running from the devil, from your demons, from whatever might be on the hunt and knowing that no matter what they try to do, you will continue down your path... In a straight line! La Ligne rocks like the perfect anthem for the rock 'n roll soul!

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 artists listened to last week…

It must still be Monday somewhere? Right? You all know the deal, Monday comes around and hits you over the head with too much work and appointments and no time whatsoever for anything fun. But we had a grand weekend and the week before we had time to listen to some awesome new stuff! How about the new Poste 942! The new album Long Replay will be released in a couple of days and showcases once again how freaky and gritty these French crazies are! Fast paced hardrock with overtones of grunge and gritty punk attitude! A couple of new tracks and a few new versions of old tracks combined with tracks from their earlier released Long Play album. A damn fine edition of Poste 942! Hailing from Italy the stoner metal that is brought by The Black Lodge has this unnerving quality on their album Time Never Sleeps. It gets under your skin and wiggles around, there’s something dark and secretive lurking here. Great album and highly addictive! When our newest member The Reek of STOOM writes a glorifying post about TrYangle we sit up and bend our ears! We listen and we get where he is coming from! Wolf by TrYangle is one hell of a proggy masterpiece! The same goes for Swamp Lord, their The Drip release was hailed by The Reek of STOOM as something every doom and sludge lover should dig and we do! Outstanding! VinceS tipped u about The Omy and their Sgt.Badtrip album. A very sick psychedelic rock outfit from Moscow that knows how to throw a curveball. Heavy blues, seventies psychedelic, droning elements and something very very very amazing! Just go and listen to Sgt.Badtrip! In fact, listen to them all! Do it! They’re all that good!

Poste942 – Long Play

Poste942 – Long Play
Self released – 2017
Rock, Hard, Blues, Grunge
Rated: ****

The picture on the cover reminds me of the time we spent in the little cabin Felix build for his guests in the Restonica valley, high in the mountains of Corsica. That was back in 2004. Drinking wine and dubious quality spirits until it was pitch black outside and getting up only a few hours later to join him as he went searching for his goats. We’ve been longing to go back there as much as we’ve been wanting to travel to the south of France again. There is a same kind of spirit lurking there. We’ve been keeping an eye on the Poste942 guys ever getting to know them back in 2014, when they released their Extended Play EP. For they definitely possess that righteous, no nonsense spirit. Two years later they released follow-up EP Extended Play 2. Which showed quite some progression, a road that lead them away from a lot of the gritty punk prevalent on that first release and to something more hardrock and blues oriented. That trek through musical history continues, on the Long Play release, released somewhere in the beginning of July. They sure still grit their teeth but with more feeling and more soul. The album features a handful of tracks released on the earlier EP’s and a truckload of new stuff. All of them are rowdy, spirited, teeth bared rockers that fill the soul with something honest and pure. Like self-produced hooch and self-shot meat. Bluesy, southern and still wild enough to qualify tracks as grungy or alternative. A definite soundtrack for defiance and a revolution waiting to happen…
