It does not happen that often anymore. But yes, there’s an older album on this edition of the Doom Charts. Why it wasn’t discovered all those months ago, or why it suddenly has, will forever remain a mystey. The same goes for all the other aspects regarding music. A mystery. Why does a certain piece of music make you scream? Howl? Jump for yoy! Cry… And why do other songs, album or parts of music do very little for you. Even though the neighbor goes absolutely apeshit on it! It’s all highly personal and it’s all about what you love. And you can love it all. Or leave it. It’s your choice. Always. Below, is a list of what the Contributors chose, out of all that amazing music that’s out there. They voted for some 166 different albums, and you can peruse the Top 40 of that list below and choose your new favorite album… True freedom of choice…

The Conjunction of the Spheres has this time caused for wonderful things to happen. For you see, the stars have aligned to bring all of you out there the August 2025 Doom Charts! Together with another Bandcamp Friday. So, there goes your paycheck! Cause of the 214 albums that received votes this month, the Top Forty is published and twenty-fife of them receive a blurb. Blurbs, a few lines of words to spur you into action. To entice you to listen to the album and by all means, to buy it if you like it… Some day some how… Bandcamp now perhaps?

Oh yeah, you are right! That misheard quote might have been about love. A thing that truly might be the most important thing humans have got going for them. It is one of the emotions that drives us. Drives us to create. To create art. So it boggles the mind that there is such a thing as AI Art. Or AI Music. It has nothing to do with creating. With putting into writing, drawing or music that feeling you wanted to capture, those memories you want to show, the pain, the hurt, the longing, the love. There is of course no such thing yet as Artificial Intelligence or Artificial Intelligence Art/Music. It’s algorithms and a programmed database or search engine. Combining, twisting, re-using what has been made before. No intelligent thought is present at any time. And no emotion. No love. And for now, most of the (lets keep calling it AI music for now) is still discernable and identifiable as such. But the programs will get better and it will become more difficult. As Doom Charts we have no desire to promote AI Music. And yes we know, one day, an album will slip through the cracks and get mentioned. But why, I ask, would you go through the trouble of letting a program conjure up something like that? There is no emotion present whatsoever. We can’t hear what the artists went through to create their music. To share their thoughts. Their emotions. Their love. Is there anything to gain from entering a few words into an AI Music program? Especially in our loving little Heavy Underground niche…

Once every full moon the First Friday of the new month will be on the very first day of the month. Welcome to the August edition of the Doom Charts! Brought to you by a throng of heavy music fiends who diligently send in their lists every month after listening to as much of the great albums floating around the Heavy Underground as they possibly can. This time around 245 albums received votes and you can see and listen for yourself which albums made the August Edition. You will also notice, that for the first time in many editions, no less than Four albums carried over from the July edition. This happens mostly when the Contributors simply can’t get enough of those releases or if they perhaps voted a bit too soon for a certain release. Of course, with promos arriving early or very early and the ever more fluent release dates, the official dates do become a bit hazy… But personally, I’d like to think that whenever this happens, the album is that good and deserves to be heard by as many of you lovely folks out there as possible… So, here you go, the August 2023 Doom Charts, be vigilant, keep watching and keep listening! Cause there’s so much good and heavy stuff out there, we often think we only actually scratch the surface…

It’s about setting the scene. The dead body in the hotel room. Foreboding music. It’s about the unexpected. About the weird, the wild, and The Cursed Who Perform The Larvagods Rites. Here we are again. Treading through all those amazing releases populating the Heavy Underground. Here we are again. At the first of a new month. With an all new Doom Charts edition. No less than a total of 245 albums received votes this month and of the list of 40 that rose from below, to shred your flesh and are now ready for you to peruse here; there are 37 new entries. But all forty of ‘m are demonically good, they all cackle and moan and will shred you whole!

There are those dreams in which we fly, but don't really want to, so it continuesly feels like you are falling. There are those where you feel stuck. In a labyrinth or in a hole... Or where you are chased by ravenous monsters...

Most of them are all just because you were one of The Cursed Who Perform The Larvagods Rites.... It's your own fault! Go remedy that by reading up on the best of Heavy Underground and checking all those albums out! Cause all forty of ‘m are demonically good, they all cackle and moan and will shred you whole!

It feels like the end of an era. And it actually is. Cause Bucky is leaving us. No, don’t get me wrong, he’s not ill, sick or dying. The man is just leaving the Doom Charts and the online world. Which will be a big miss for us heavy rock loving fiends. The man has been an ever present presence in the heavy music community for years. And he was one of the cats that was with the Doom Charts from the beginning and when the time came that the ever growing group of contributors needed to be lead and guided, he naturally grew into that role.

Every month we would send him our votes. He’d whip us into action and make sure we delivered votes and blurbs on time. He was there to keep in touch with all the record companies, the PR-firms, the bands and our faithful readers. Juggling all that; on top of everything else that life throws at ya, family, work, moving across country, is one hell of a job. And he did a hell of a job and more! I’ve marveled constantly at his omnipresence. He was articulate, knew his stuff and responded to every question that got asked… He was a gentleman and one you could always ask for advice… Even when it wasn’t about music… He will be missed. Not just because of all the work he did, but because he is one of the good people… And you know… Good people listen to good music…

Bucky Brown, go do your thing, be good to the people around you and keep spinning all that majestic vinyl… Perhaps some of us will meet you one day at a live show going berserk or digging through some crates in a dubious record store in a rundown part of town… And remember… Should you ever need us… For any reason at all… We will be here… ~ Joop Konraad

Yep, Joop is correct and I am in tears over here as I head off into the outlaw sunset. … our huge world has shrunk to the size of a pea! Our social contacts are limited to a cool “one square meter distance ritual”! Our bathroom mirror meets us daily as our only friend! We crave for variety in shimmering colors, while we put the oil sardine tin in the metal bent shopping cart! … The self-made hermit goes home frightened! – alone… alone? … alone with ourselves? Ey, a grinning monster sits on our shoulder and gloatingly whispers in our ear: “You are alone with your thoughts, your feelings, with the fears of your soul and there is no escape, mate!“ And this mean monster is exactly the one we fear most, isn’t it? All these years we have made the greatest effort to cloud the view of this monster with the razor-sharp eyes, with journeys around the world, social activities and escape into everything that could distract us!

Mel Lie and Her Monster… I want to meet them both even more now! Ye gods, what a screed! Crazy, wicked, wild and poetic! Just like those albums on the new August edition of the Doom Charts! All of them are equally stunning; but personal favorite at this moment in time are the deserved Numero Uno: Psychlona! Man, what an album! But we’ve been getting crazy on the new Motorpsycho, Hydra, Black Elephant, Blues Pills, Kitchen Witch, Temple, The Atomic Bitchwax and Volcanova! Volcanova and their Radical Waves album will surely end up higher next month! But hey; it’s just the tip of the heavy rock ice berg! There is even more awesomeness out there!

As Madman Tony Maim already knew when he wrote about The Black Furs for us on Friday 23rd. “This album is one great big dose of lip-smacking, booze-guzzling, feedback-shaking, riff-making, occult-worshiping, coke-snorting, drum-pounding, sleaze-walking, retro-loving, fist-pumping, head-banging, heavy-making, groove-strutting, wah-wah working, trance-inducing, snake-licking, bass-thumping brilliance.” He liked it! Someone asked online the other day about the state of new music and whether or not the coming years could sustain the quality and volume we are witnessing. That questions has been asked about every single year I could remember since I’ve been involved in the heavy underground. Each year we are pummeled with release after release, each one seeming to out do the last and every year thinking there is no way it can top that. Well here we are again, August has past and we are struggling to keep up with the amount of killer albums being released and losing our shit over our favorites throughout the year. Here at the charts we had another 300 album month from a total of 29 lists sent in by contributors. We added some new contributors as well who included Héctor Hurtado representing More Fuzz as well as Adam Walsh who may have slowed down on his blog submissions on Ear Munchies but has managed to stay on the cutting edge of taste in this here heavy underground scene (see credits at bottom for links). Please welcome the newbies and check yourself before this chart wrecks yourself! 12 debut appearances and 13 holding strong in the top 25.

If one of the great Doom Chart Contributors starts quoting the Good Doctor one better pay attention. Just as much as when Madman Tony Maim starts preaching. Back in July Madman Maim riffed and rolled and ranted about the new Forming The Void album Rift. So, it only feels right that these freaks are storming the Charts this months like a space age wooly mammoth!

The world as I’ve known it has changed its perspective many times over during my life. People are separate or together, introverts or extroverts, anxious or serene, as well as falling somewhere in between them all. All are individuals, of their own minds and opinions. The only place I’ve ever witnessed a collective consciousness consistently at work is within the crowd at a live heavy music performance.

The attendees and performers of live heavy music events are unlike any other collection of people I’ve been a part of. This is important – not “apart from”, but “a part of.” It’s a community like no other, all individuals with primarily one goal – get the music heard and loved and shared. Attending more heavy music events than I could ever count, I will continue to attend all I can – until ripped from this mortal coil, smiling as I raise my middle finger on one hand and throw horns with the other. Hopeful that happens at the end of a show after the last band, but until then I’ll continue my part to achieve that goal.

Compiling newer music we’ve found, heard, and loved, there is a tallied collection of 25 heavy music options shared every month on the Doom Charts for you discover (or rediscover). A hot, sultry August edition is here to swelter in, as this month there are FOURTEEN new albums in their debut appearance on the charts, with one album revisiting! (A Doom Chart revisit is a rare occurrence for an album that’s been out for a spell, but I think it’s damned cool when it happens.) All these incredible releases to peruse, listen to, and share with other like-minded, individual music-loving maniacs like yourselves. Find your great revelations, People of Earth!

It’s that time of the month again. Or better yet, last Saturday was that time of the month again! The new Doom Chart went up! And we can’t stress the fact enough that they are compiled our of some forty amazing bloggers, journalists and music fiends from around the world who send their top albums of past month to one of them to compile the ultimate Doom Chart. It’s a highly democratic adventure that unfortunately will leave some of those great albums and bands hanging just below the Top 25 that is published… And guess what… Mr. Bucky Brown, the guy who compiled last month’s issue, also did a Mid-year breakdown. But before or after you check that one out; be sure to feast your eyes and ears on the Doom Chart of this hot and steamy August!! Who will be the Numero Uno this month? Number 12!

The band have outgrown any obvious  influences and are forging ahead down their own, dark path. Even with some big releases in 2015 so far, this album will surely take some beating for pure doom and riffage this year. So be sure to check out Goya’s new album Obelisk, and this time around not just because Tony says so, but the Doom Chart as well!
