Pink Fuzz – Resolution

Pink Fuzz – Resolution
Permanent Teeth Records / Self-released – 2025
Rock, Stoner, Desert
Rated: ***

I’ve been following everything Alain Johannes touches for quite a few years now and have had the absolute honor of meeting up with him a couple of times. And whenever another project he’s involved with comes by, I sit up straight and get my Alain ears on. It’s the kind of ears that always  seem to open the heart, cause whatever Mr. Johannes touches, there is always this very honest and heartfelt quality to it all.

And that can once again be said by the stoner pop three that go by the name of Pink Fuzz! A Denver sister/brother led trio that sweats heavy stoner rock, marries this to a bit of shoegaze, garage and implores that Palm Desert vibe to make it all gleam with pop sensible sparkles. That’s Resolution for ya, the new Pink Fuzz album and it’s resolute in showering you with stoner rocking fun.

There’s this dust-kicked, late night energy running through the album. The long-awaited second full-sized album by siblings LuLu and John Demitro with Forrest Raup on drums. They seem to channel the kind of desert born chemistry that feels equal parts instinct and atmosphere and seems to constantly nod at a certain era in the desert. It’s a record that hums like the old tube amps under the Mojave stars.

Their first album in some seven years, and Resolution comfortably picks up where their Vitals EP left off. But the sound is wider, richer and a tad more sunbaked. The ghost of certain influences might be fleeting, but the shadow of Queens Of The Stone Age looms big over quite a few tracks and riffs. Yet, Pink Fuzz turns those influences inside out and folds them inwards with a bit of shoegaze shimmer, doom weight and fuzz drips.

The ten tracks offer loads of fun and even the most urgent ones never lose their looseness. TriggerLong Gone and Coming For Me move with that low slung desert strut, confident, unhurried and heavy in all the right places. Am I Happy? might start as that lonely voce in the canyon but then erupts into a sun-flare of guitars. And No Sympathy and Worst Enemy both bring sharp melody and raw nerve into the mix.

Talking about the mix, this was done by Alain Johannes. Although we get the distinct impression he could not hold off on adding a few minor links and touches here and there. But we might be wrong about that. Even so, the album, produced by Kevin McKeown, captures a live-room warmth and ever snare hit, and fuzz pedal crackle feels tangible, like the band set up in the middle of nowhere and let the desert itself breathe through the mics. Like the old guard used to do. Like de Rancho De La Luna crew still does…

And that spirit seems present, even though it wasn’t recorded there, but in 5th Street Studios in Austin, Texas, the album still feels so rough-edged, soulful and gloriously human. The three sound unfiltered, alive and have managed to turn fuzz into feeling and melody into motion. A record that will put a smile on your face, and an extra kick on your gas pedal as you drive off into the endless horizon…

Årabrot - Rite of Dionysus

Årabrot - Rite of Dionysus
Dalapop Records / Pelagic Records – 2025
Rock, Alternative, Wave, Noise, Pop
Rated: ****

The noise from before has turned into an icy gale, a steel gaze that permeates their art. It stares deep into your very being, far into a distance and feels like a brooding mask. For the new album Rite of Dionysus will surely be viewed by many as high art, the touch of pop present since the album that came before, making sure that us common people will certainly feel it as well. It’s the new Årabrot record and it’s riddled with mystery and a wily esoteric touch. Not at all strange, considering it was recorded in their own church studio. The touch of master Alain Johannes can also be felt, turning some of that ice into a vaporous warmth. For he was there, during the initial recording sessions that lead to the 2023 album Of Darkness And Light and this new one, (that features the titletrack of that 2023 album)  and later on again to put the final touches on it. Perhaps lighter than earlier records, Rite of Dionysus seems to watch the human condition from above, sometimes Bowie-esque and always strangely hypnotic. Like that great red wine you sip slowly, it takes time to intoxicate you. But it surely will. It’s that meditative and minimalistic touch that just won’t let go and slowly chants and scours the transcendental landscape to deliver you an island of calm while your consciousness is bombarded by turbulence and mantra like vocals that often pierce and might even wound. Cold or was it a shiver of fear that ran through me, a cut from a knife and blood dripping from the tones that softly slip away… Årabrot deliver beautiful poetry that will race all kinds of different poems through your mind, it riddles their misty atmosphere and will make you want to find that light in the frost of midnight…

Thus Live Humans - Art Déco I

Remember when the duo from Toulon, France released their This Light Of Ancient Times, Vol.2? Well, Thus Live Humans is back with Art Déco I. It moved from their bluesy hardrock towards a more experimental and art rock sound. Progressive moments, metal flashes and jazzy influences. It’s a different side of Thus Live Humans, but that was the idea all along. Art Déco I is full of ideas!

Bleak Transcendence - Mortuanima

The title track for their debut album Mortuanima was released in December and soon the full record will follow. Bleak Transcendence hails from Brasil and blackened death metal, doom toned and with funeral moments. Thanks to the synth and violin the atmosphere turns gothic and melancholic. Mortuanima might just burrow into your soul like the malevolent entity Bleak Transcendence sounds like…

Need Her Liver – Bonobo

We’re off to Italy in a few months. And the Bonobo album by Need Her Liver will definitely be playing in the van. Born in 1999 they’ve started more punk oriented and have since then drifted into more hardrock and psychedelic territories. It’s that seventies sound translated to the modern age. The eight tracks deserve way more attention, with still a bit of grunge and stoner, they manage to make it all highly pop sensible and powerful. This will surely make the roads traveled even better!

Praetorian – Pylon Cult

Well, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. Been to Stevenage many times. But it’s hard for me to imagine hitting the town or the Squirrel with as much drugs as the Good Doctor could gather. Even so, when a band called Praetorian opens their intense new album Pylon Cult with a track called Fear And Loathing In Stevenage, you can bet your ass I’m interested. Blackened, bleak, death, sludge, hardcore and thrash working like a concrete mixer to churn out that filthy metal foundation over which the vocals screech like iron on a grinding wheel! Grinding!

Ramkot – Rosa

Ramkot – Rosa
V2 – 2024
Rock, Alternative, Desert, Stoner, Noise
Rated: *****

These Belgian crazies started back in 2017, delivered their first four track self-titled ep RAMKOT in 2019, followed that up with What Exactly Are You Looking For in 2021 and delivered their In Between Borderlines album last year. And now, Ramkot is back! And not just back, they went to the desert and came back with a genuine jewel called Rosa! And they did not just go to any desert, hell no! They went to Joshua Tree and recorded at the fabled Rancho De La Luna, together with producer Alain Johannes. Both his touch and the magnetic Rancho are audible on the new Ramkot album and adds the exact amount of cherries to put this album on top. As most touring bands know, it’s incredibly expensive to get your own instruments into the states. Omega Sun know how to do it right and so does Ramkot. Don’t bring any! They used all the magical instruments available to make their own very danceable noise and sexy dance moves inspiring ruckus. Highly dynamic and beautifully diverse, the album features stonerrock songs, alternative rock, noise inspired, extremely atmospheric slow rock and even a piano ballad. And when the press release states that the amazing Zeppelin single was recorded in one take, one feels nothing by awe and admiration. The same goes for Alain Johannes, Rancho De La Luna and the rest of the Rosa album…

Save The Little Devil

Save The Little Devil

Living in Tilburg for a while it soon became one of my favorite places to hang out. Cool music, great beer, kick ass shows… Good people! And now they need our help to save one of the vestiges of heavy underground rock! They need to soundproof the stage our fear closure… Had so many wild nights there and saw so many great shows… Saw Volbeat there, the final time they played a small venue. We Hunt Buffalo were absolutely amazing, a night together with Monolord. Could name a multitude more of course, but seriously, so many great shows. Even did a few interviews there, Nick Oliveri and Alain Johannes being two of them… They welcome everyone and all, it’s all about that good and that heavy! Save The Little Devil!

A Monday that feels like a Sunday, thanks to a national holiday and a different kind of morning… An amazing and emotional night with Masters Of Reality and Alain Johannes last Thursday and a great evening filled with four bands yesterday. New Dutch bands Enma and Alternator opening up for Ruff Majik and Monkey3. And all of them delivering the goods! And thanks to my lovely wife, the Ruff Majik four got to crash reasonable comfortable on my living room floor… I hope it was reasonable at least… Just like I believe they weren’t too weirded out by that way too long story we wrote about Ruff Majik, there last album Elektrik Ram, the new single What A Time To Be A Knife, (which they played last night) and their touring life… A quieter week is forthcoming, so perhaps we can get more HiVe work done? We’ll see. But we did mention the new video by Coilguns and Horseburner last week. And ofcourse jotted down some words about the awesome new High Noon Kahuna album and breathtaking new Maragda. Be sure to check those out and be sure to check out the others in the Most Listened Last Week list… They all kick serious ass!

Clocktopus – World Worry III

Clocktopus – World Worry III

Clocktopus… A new Dutch supergroup formed in the jungle of Thailand by Maarten Rischen, formerly of Shaking Godspeed. After moving there and building a ramshackle studio in the middle of the wilderness, he invited a bunch of friends to record an album. The Thailand jungle version of the Desert Sessions. And as the humidity enveloped them all like a blanket, the sound was born and the other members were clutched by the many arms of the Clocktopus. Wout Kemkens (Shaking Godspeed, Iron Jinn, De Niemanders), Tommy Ebben (Komodo), Thomas van den Berg (Amber Arcades, Alamo Race Track), Zac Chapman (Electric Company) were all unable to escape the Clocktopus reach… The full debut album will be out in March 2024, but here’s the debut single and video: World Worry III. A muggy ballad about the other side of the Thai coin…

The Devils - Time Is Gonna Kill Me

The Devils - Time Is Gonna Kill Me

Their third album Beast Must Regret Nothing (2021) was produced by Alain Johannes (Eleven, QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures, Chris Cornell, PJ Harvey) and includes a featuring with Mark Lanegan. And the fifth track on that wild The Devils album is Time Is Gonna Kill Me. Wild, just like their entire performance at Maximum Festival 2022 near Venice, Italy. Which was recorded as their live album Live at Maximum Festival. The duo from Naples embodies the ultimate sound of chaos; their style is primitive, loaded with sex, sin and Rock’n’Roll!

The band on "Time Is Gonna Kill Me": "There is no poetic content in our music. Actually this song says that we don’t kill time, but time is gonna kill us. The music is inspired by Otis Rush blues, who clearly explained that ‘Someone promises you the world and then gives you nothing: that’s the blues.'".

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 10 Most Listened Albums Last Week…

Another week has passed and it was another week filled with lots of different albums. The ten above got the most spins. But there is one that is now on heavy rotation and will surely be for the rest of next week. The self-titled debut by Vitskär Süden. I already saw it mentioned by many of the Doom Chart Contributors the past week, but had not yet found the time to check it out. Even though the Doom Charts ofcourse premiered their first video a couple of days ago: Trickle of The Snail! It has everything you love and yet is entirely different! Go read what Frazer Jones had to say about it on his Desert Psychlist! And after that, check out the rest of the albums! Cause they’re all freakin tasty!

Big Scenic Nowhere – Vision Beyond Horizon

Big Scenic Nowhere – Vision Beyond Horizon
Heavy Psych Sounds – 2020
Rock, Stoner, Desert, Punk
Rated: ****

It just entered the Top 10 of the January Doom Charts of 2020 and we were honored to write those few dubious lines about Vision Beyond Horizon, the new Big Scenic Nowhere record. We know the project and we know what kind of music we can get ready for. The only think to know is what kind of guests are involved and how good on the scale of great, to awesome, to legendary, to universe shattering it will be… “Oh yes! A new record by the Gary Arce (Yawning Man) and Bob Balch (Fu Manchu) duo and their ever revolving array of helping hands. Mario Lalli,. Nick Oliveri, Per Wiberg, Tony Reed, Bill Stinson, Alain Johannes and a few heroes more. Perhaps a little less drawn out, jammy or wide in comparison to their earlier release but still very desert and very stoner. Which is logical when you think of all that great stuff Arce and Balch have been a part of. Indeed, killer riffs and desert psychedelics a plenty! Oh, and yes, one weird fast punk track?!”  Only a few quick lines indeed, enough to entice and not give away too much. Perhaps a fitting description for that Vision Beyond Horizon

Big Scenic Nowhere – Dying on the Mountain

Big Scenic Nowhere – Dying on the Mountain
Blues Funeral Recordings – 2019
Stoner, Psych, Prog
Rated: ****

Just when you thought the days of the Supergroup were over, along comes one with a veritable Honor Roll of legend and influence - indeed, the musicians at work here not only shaped the Stoner movement and all that followed, they also inspired a generation to think outside the confines of the Metal genre and re-discover that 70's spirit of experimentation. Dying On The Mountain follows a similar vein of exploration that Elder tapped into... An excursion without any preconceived thought to the members' past outings. Weighing in at just over the 20 minute mark,  the title track flows with the easy energy of a band who are both familiar and comfortable with each other's styles: That instantly - recognizable Nick Oliveri bassline rumbling and tumbling through mescaline-like distortions of Bob Balch & Gary Arce's guitars, puncturing the drifting backdrops of Per Wiberg and Tony Reed's keyboard wizardry. Dying On The Mountain's three parts move from slo-burn Psychedelia, through lush choral sections into an ultimate Heavy assault at the finale. Second track, "Towards The Sun" heralds back to the members' Glories of Old - Heavy, trippy, slightly dark in places, it thunders along with a relentless doomed rhythm that captures the soul. Big Scenic Nowhere have done what few 'Supergroups' have done before - created a work that is intelligent, exciting and as full of the same Stoner spirit from its practitioners as they had at the beginning. It's good to have you back folks... It's been a long, strange trip...

(Written by Reek of STOOM)

(Also featuring Mario Lalli, Bill Stinson, Jim Monroe, Thomas Jäger, Lisa Alley and Ian Graham. During those sessions Alain Johannes also joined in and on January 31st a new album shall be released through Heavy Psych Sounds entitled: Vision Beyond Horizon. Go hear the first single 'The Glim'.)

Motorpsycho – The Tower

Motorpsycho – The Tower
Stickman – 2017
Rock, Prog, Stoner
Rated: ****

I must confess. The past few years the Motorpsycho albums have unfortunately been passing me by. Not because I did not dig them at all, but because there were perhaps too many and not all of them lived up to the massive quality they had before. And I must confess that if the Norwegian fiends had not travelled to the American desert to record in the magical Rancho De La Luna studio, with help from Alain Johannes, I might have not paid that much attention again. This time however they had me rooting for them before the needle touched the record. We all know drummer Kenneth Kapstad left to found Spidergawd. Which might have been a blessing in disguise. Cause with Tomas Järmyr on the drum stool we can now enjoy a Motorpsycho that demands your attention. No more halfhearted listening sessions or a simple ‘it’s good’. No, this time around the build The Tower and it will stand forever! It spills over in creativity and on many occasion it seems to top everything they ever did before. The way the let Järmyr dictate the rhythm, with much more space and room is a breath of fresh air. Progressive in nature most of the record is heavier than the albums of late and bursting with impressive tension arcs. It is safe to say the Great Magnet and the direct line Rancho De La Luna has with it has struck again…

Grenadeers – Chasing The Stereotype

Grenadeers – Chasing The Stereotype
Self released – 2016
Rock, Desert, Stoner, Pop
Rated: ****

A guest spot for Alain Johannes on the fourth track The Herd and the entire EP Chasing The Stereotype is mixed by the good man as well. Okay, you’ve got my attention! We are talking about a new six-piece outfit from The Netherlands called Grenadeers. And on their first six songs strong EP Chasing The Stereotype we get a hefty dose of stonerpop and robotic desert rock in the vein of Queens Of The Stone Age and the European bands that popped up after they all heard the magic that comes from the Palm Desert and the Rancho De La Luna studio. It also moves decidedly towards one of the other bands Alain Johannes was or is part of, Arthur Channel. Especially in the way they explore big vistas and grand gestures, which is definitely the big plus of the six tracks on this EP. And for those explorations they use no less than three guitarist. Which makes them sound big in almost every way. And after having the EP on repeat for a day or two we can only state that even though Grenadeers might not be as raw or gritty as you would love them to be. It is every bit as robotic and danceable. Which makes it just as easy to fall in love with!

Black Box Revelation – Highway Cruiser

Black Box Revelation – Highway Cruiser
Caroline – 2015
Rock, Blues, Garage
Rated: ****

There was a bit of silence surrounding the Belgian duo Black Box Revelation. The most recent album My Perception was recorded in Los Angeles in 2011 under the skillful guidance of Alain Johannes. Ofcourse it’s never really quiet, when it comes to making noise, cause they toured like crazies. But finally after four years we are treated to some new excellence for at home: Highway Cruiser. It is a ten track counting ode to throbbing blues and grating garage. This time around they went to New York to work with Thomas Brenneck of the Daptone Label. The guy that loves to work analog. And ofcourse one will be getting a more soulful edge on ones compositions when working with a guy like Brenneck. And especially when you not only make the lyrics more personal but also get vocal help from The Gospel Queens on tracks like War Horse and Highway Cruiser. But the best aspect of the new album is, without a doubt, the guitar playing. Which sounds much more melodic and with a definite hang towards the old grandfathers of the blues. Which will make you hear the musical freedom with every note played…

Arthur Channel – Arthur Channel

Arthur Channel – Arthur Channel
The End – 2014
Rock
Rated: ****

Drummer Jack Irons, bassist Greg Richling and multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes know each other from bands like Eleven and The Wallflowers. But it is the unknown singer/guitarplayer Jon Greene that launched this new project known as Arthur Channel. He was the guy who was writing the tunes in a little mountain cabin somewhere in the bushes of California. And he was the guy who just sent them to Irons and prayed for something. Who in turn immediately fell in love with the songs and got Richling to participate and Johannes to produce and add color. On guitar we also hear Lyle Workman (Frank Black, They Might Be Giants) and Zach Irons (Irontom). The sum of these musicians give us a magical total: highly atmospheric and emotional alternative rock with moments of hunted folk and natural melodies. But still, the most impressive part is the fact that the amazing collection of music by the different musicians almost pale in comparison to the fantastic voice by rookie Jon Greene. What a find!
