Van Groover - Both Shop EP's

Van Groover - Both Shop EP's

I heard the loud hum from a far… The screeching tires… The backfire as it drove off… Yes! Look what the good old boys from Van Groover decided to drop in my lap! It’s the brand new double edged Back From The Shop and Back To The Shop vinyl edition! Both EP’s on one slab of holy vinyl… It’s groovy and it’s about van life! Cause the boys know, there’s always something that needs fixing when you own a van… But not Van Groover’s sound!

Stoner HiVe already knew that listening to Back From The Shop:

“… It’s called Back From The Shop and implores some Clutch influences, (how fitting) to get their trucking stoner rock going. Less metallic perhaps than their earlier Honk If Parts Fall Off, this five-track EP seems to serve as the perfect reminder that there’s this German trio out there that knows how to give you the right kind of energy. A sludgy tone setting gives it all this highly greasy atmosphere. And the intro skit sets the launch up for a definite afterburning start. Cause that’s what opener Double Wide gives you. The vocalist starts the engine, orates all the checks and lights and the guitars begin to wail, you hear the engine roar, then the three put the peddle to the metal and they’re off, cruising hardcore….”

Or as Stoner HiVe wrote about Back To The Shop:

“…. Potmodel shows a different side of Van Groover, still with a smile, they deliver most of the song almost like a death acoustic version of their rock. But once they burst through, they let a bluesy harmonica lead the way. Big Dog is huge in its delivery, biting in its metal edge and growling in vocals and on its low end riffs. Power driven and burning up the engine….”

Thank you guys! Love it!

Go check out the wild an fun Van Groover three!

Top 10 Most Listened Artists Last Week…

Slomosa
Star Beast
Patriarchs In Black
Van Groover
Bird’s View
Shun
Üga Büga
Fear The Beards
Psychedelic Witchcult
Curse The Son

A good morning from an extremely sweltering Netherlands. We’re gonna hit around 35 degrees today and that’s not the kind of heat that goes over well in humid Netherlands. But luckily, we’ve got tasty desert grooves to get us through the day. The new Slomosa album Tundra Rock for instance or the new Curse The Son called Delirium. But we could name a hundred more of course... It’s been a decent week, and thanks to our new man on the ground, Ronny Dijksterhuis, it’s been pretty swell even! He jotted down some damn cool words about the awesome Occult Witches album and got all of our ears peaked for that damn fine The Blessed Acceleration record. We mentioned the new Van Groover EP, the new Wall collection, Sacred Buzz seven inch and reposted about that wicked Doomboyz release. Videos by Crash And The Void, Ruff Majik and Psychlona. And put an extra spotlight on that cool night festival: Nacht van De Niemander in Arnhem, happening on September 7th. And hoped to get a few more donations for the remodeling off the Little Devil soundstage, cause it would be a damn shame and unbareable to lose that amazing venue! It will be a weird week that might lead to limited amount of posts, but we do hope to finish the Psychlona review and the interview we did with Phil Hey about the new Warped Vision album… Should be doable… Even with this heat! Enjoy the sun, enjoy the week!

Van Groover – Back To The Shop

Van Groover – Back To The Shop
Self-released – 2024
Rock, Stoner, Sludge, Metal
Rated: ****

It lasted a year. The van. And after 365 days and many miles, it needs to go… Back To The Shop! It’s the age old story of every band and van owner, returned from the garage, it is only there until it needs to get fixed again. Van Groover is finalizing its tale of woe about the tour van and all the adventures they’ve been able to experience because of it. Or not. Either way, the new four track EP brings the story to a close and does so in a stoner rocking, sludge toned and overtly metal way. I’m old. I’m slowly losing my hair. On my head that is. Not on my back of course, it’s growing abundantly over there. Too many details? Sorry, but for some weird reason the opening track on the Back To The Shop EP is called Silverback immediately made me think of that. Thunderous, low riffing stoner rock that has this slicing punk, speed rock attitude to the bass and guitar work. Focused in delivery, it retains the humor the Van Groover three are known for. It will soon get a video treatment, and we are looking forward to see what the boys produced for this. Ending with a snippet from the Adam Sandler movie Billy Madison, only emphasizes the fun these guys have. Kolbenfresser follows and is much more intense, sludge tones and motoring metal. Until that leisurely and fata morgana like middle part, shimmering and feeling like those moments right before you get a heatstroke waiting for Triple A to arrive because the van broke down on the side of the highway. Luckily it gets fixed somehow; and like a many black ironed machine you truck forward towards the horizon. Power driven and burning up the engine. And with that the EP comes to an end and we can go Back To The Shop. But wait… There’s a bonus track! Head Out West, where they dispel some of the humor and seems to deliver a more earnest story about driving at night, where the road below and the stars above will always make a man think about what has passed. They also turn the tempo down, even when they do open up a bit more after a slow but groovy opening. It shows a yet again different side to what Van Groover can do and shows us that once the van has been fixed, yet again, they can go into whatever direction they want…

Van Groover – Back From The Shop

Van Groover – Back From The Shop
Self released – 2023
Stoner, Hardrock
Rated: ****

It’s been out for a week now, but we’ve been lucky to been grooving to the new Van Groover for quite a while now. It’s called Back From The Shop and implores some Clutch influences, (how fitting) to get their trucking stoner rock going. The vocalist starts the engine, orates all the checks and lights and the guitars begin to wail, you hear the engine roar, then the three put the peddle to the metal and they’re off, cruising hardcore. Following The Bandit was released as a single a month ago, even dustier stoner rocking ensues from the get-go. But a different kind than the dust of sand, this is concrete powder, for the generator parties that must surely be held on those forlorn and deserted industrial zones of Herborn, Germany. Kyuss from the ghetto! A-38 follows and brings you from Göttingen to Leipzig, but slowing down on the highway feels like a dangerous thing, so the vocals turn more aggressive fast enough, and the sounds of the van into something tank-like! Closing track, The Grizz, which gives you some extra heavy chugging, the kind you can use to keep you awake as the sun sets and you are nowhere near your destination. Although the middle part, with the almost spoken vocals is a bit disturbing and dark. Which in part turns their stonerrock a shade of doom and the guitar flurry towards the end is a welcome touch of light. Glad to have the Van back… And their humor is back from the shop too! Go watch their highly commercial promo videos to get the word out about their band and their damn fine new EP: Back From The Shop!

The Doom Chart for August 2021

Doom Charts

“When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.”  ~ Nelson Mandela

It feels like the end of an era. And it actually is. Cause Bucky is leaving us. No, don’t get me wrong, he’s not ill, sick or dying. The man is just leaving the Doom Charts and the online world. Which will be a big miss for us heavy rock loving fiends. The man has been an ever present presence in the heavy music community for years. And he was one of the cats that was with the Doom Charts from the beginning and when the time came that the ever growing group of contributors needed to be lead and guided, he naturally grew into that role.

Every month we would send him our votes. He’d whip us into action and make sure we delivered votes and blurbs on time. He was there to keep in touch with all the record companies, the PR-firms, the bands and our faithful readers. Juggling all that; on top of everything else that life throws at ya, family, work, moving across country, is one hell of a job. And he did a hell of a job and more! I’ve marveled constantly at his omnipresence. He was articulate, knew his stuff and responded to every question that got asked… He was a gentleman and one you could always ask for advice… Even when it wasn’t about music… He will be missed. Not just because of all the work he did, but because he is one of the good people… And you know… Good people listen to good music…

Bucky Brown, go do your thing, be good to the people around you and keep spinning all that majestic vinyl… Perhaps some of us will meet you one day at a live show going berserk or digging through some crates in a dubious record store in a rundown part of town… And remember… Should you ever need us… For any reason at all… We will be here… ~ Joop Konraad

Yep, Joop is correct and I am in tears over here as I head off into the outlaw sunset. Thanks Joop for the kind words, and thank you to everyone who has contributed, followed, shared and participated in the Doom Charts throughout the years. YOU are the heart and soul of the Doom Charts. You’re all in good hands and the Doom Charts remains alive and well, except for on April Fools day 😉..  But hey, enough about me, the meat and potatoes lurk below with all the bells and whistles. 24 of 25 brand new albums entering the charts this month of 216 unique albums voted on. As the Stoner Rock Army General says, 'Rock On'! ~ Bucky

Personal votes went out to: Stone Cadaver, Van Groover, Monobrow, Halfaya, Green Lung, Suncraft and Terminus! But I could and should have voted for all those others as well! Man; what a month! Stunning! We’ll be listening to all those albums in a row in the next few days… Starting as usual with the Acid Magus album Wyrd Syster… Check’m out! Check’m all out!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

DeWolff
Electric Valley

Van Groover
Gods & Punks
Kvasir

We don’t normally do those monthly lists anymore. Only the weekly ones… But this one, felt right to share, for some reason, only a day or so before the new Doom Charts will appear. And also because we have been swamped with work and have had little time to do some proper HiVe stuff and because we were keen to see how many of those will link up with the July Doom Charts…

Van Groover – Honk If Parts Fall Off

Van Groover – Honk If Parts Fall Off
Self released – 2021
Rock, Hard, Stoner, Desert, Metal
Rated: ****

They produce that gritty, sandy and dusty hardrock. You know the type. That heavy stuff that we all love so dearly and that received the moniker: stonerrock. We’re talking about the three from Herborn, Germany that go by the name Van Groover. Named after the enormous amount of time spent in vans (usually their own) and their inability to fix them once broken down, the album, which will be released in August, is called Honk If Parts Fall Off. Ten damn fine stoner tracks that will immediately enchant with their trucking power and the ever present humor. Humor of the good kind that is. Of the Red Fang kind I guess, the one that uses metal and riffs and damn good video’s to show that they mean business, but that the business will be funny and non to serious. The music stands tall though, it rolls across the terra like a monster truck and it will surely make you send them another euro. For the ten tracks tell the tale of the ‘van life’ and the adventures one may encounter during one of the many ‘van adventures’. Starting out with the bluesy kind of stonerrock, the tracklist meanders down to more metal touches, sludge influences, a punk adagio and even a bit of doom. Next time they’re on the road to a next gig, I’ll be right behind them, with a huge fishnet or magnet to collect all the parts falling off, never honking, making sure they get to the next town at top speed… Van Groover, you got a fan!
