Number 20

Number 20

For quite a while as the lists came in, the past weeks, it looked like there would not be any bands tied on the same spot with the exact same amount of points. But, you can guess from that first opening sentence, in the end, those few final lists that were received managed to push an album or two right on top of one another. In this case, two hairy beasts! Two hairy beasts on top of one another! Yummy! We only mentioned one of the two on the HiVe, back in July. And then, when we closed our eyes, we were unsure if we were really listening to a hairy beast of a stoner rock incarnation of Nine Inch Nails! Not sure if it is the touch of industrial that you can hear in the drums, the intense use of cymbals, that double beat or because it is the color of the vocals that surely does remind of Trent Reznor here and there, more than on earlier records, that makes me think of NIN. But it’s there and it works like a charm. The beast has grown to become a monster, one that can just as easily stomp through the desert as rampage a city. And there is no shortage of that forward motion; rioting inside a tilt-a-whirl or motoring through a towering landscape, this beast can do it all and does it all, with a dense layer of fuzz, some psychedelic touches, and little organ parts making it all extra colorful and a very own sound. The other animal, one that we did not yet mention on the HiVe, but which ranked high on the Doom Charts all the way back in February, goes more the way of the seventies inspired rock, the proto metal, the old vintage doom and that retro occult. With a high touch of mysticism and alchemy, the eight tracks on this album will wrap your mind in an intense smokey, foggy and fuzzy atmosphere, turning you, without any calms into a Toad Licker Mushroom Picker… So, we’re off, to a majestic good start with these two massive beasts… On Number 20 we find…

Sasquatch – Fever Fantasy

Sasquatch – Fever Fantasy
Mad Oak Records – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Psych
Rated: *****

They played Stoned From The Underground yesterday. A festival I have yet to attend; but has been high on my list for ages. Our very own Doktor420 is there right now, dancing like a maniac in front of the stage at every gig. The line-up is once again one hell of excellent collection of heaviness and Sasquatch sits there on the main stage, snugly, proudly, giddy, feverish with energy and probably very hairy. And with their new album Fever Fantasy under their belt, they will surely make the crowd go wild! I wish I was there, I wish I was there to hear them opening their set with the opening track It Lies Beyond The Bay of said new record Fever Fantasy. I would have closed my eyes and I would have surely mistaken it, if only for a moment or two, for the rock version of a Nine Inch Nails we unfortunately will never know. Not sure if it is the touch of industrial that you can here in the drums, the intense use of cymbals, that double beat or because it is the color of the vocals that surely does remind of Trent Reznor here and there, more than on earlier records, that makes me think of NIN. But it’s there and it works like a charm. That touch remains throughout the record and gives Fever Fantasy a distinctly different color and vibe in comparison to the albums we mentioned on the HiVe before; we mean the 2010 III album, IV from 2013 and their last 2017 record: Maneuvers. Which might have been the starting point to deliver this new step in the Sasquatch evolution. Cause sure, we still got that damn fine gritty groove to enjoy; the abundance of hooks; thundering basswork and machinelike riffs. But the beast has grown to become a monster, one that can just as easily stomp through the desert as rampage a city. And there is no shortage of that forward motion; rioting inside a tilt-a-whirl or motoring through a towering landscape, Sasquatch can do it all and does it all, with a dense layer of fuzz, some psychedelic touches, little organ parts making it all extra colorful and a very own sound. Cause if there’s one thing we can safely say, after almost twenty years of rocking out, Sasquatch, only sounds like Sasquatch and no other band will ever be able to match that unique sound. And certainly not Nine Inch Nails...

The Doom Charts for June 2022

The Doom Charts for June 2022

“I play guitar because I like to make loud noises. And the guitar is the coolest way to make a loud noise.”

~ Kim Thayil

We’ll add to that thought bass, drums, vocals, keys, gongs, etc. Heavy music often requires volume cranked to 11, and we live in an age where we’re spoiled for bands ready to blow out our speakers. Beyond the waves of fuzz, gnarly low end, and brain-bashing bass drums, there’s even more modes of heavy to explore, from atmospheric crush to heavy as simply a mood. Below are 40 of this month’s top purveyors of loud noises and weighted spirit, with far more that can’t be fit into just one post. Dig in and check out the new monthly playlist! And while you’re at it, please give a warm, long overdue welcome to Rich Piva and Silvi Pearl whose impeccable taste now blesses the DC crew!

Did you see the Doom Charts of June 2022? Hope so, cause it went up some five days ago! And what a wild edition once again. This edition was published by our very own Kyle SB / Shasta Beast. Thank you for stepping in and hitting it out of the park! But of course we need to say thank you to all those Contributors, the two new ones Silvi Pearl and Rich Piva; but also all the long standing members! Cause without their votes, their energy and their love for the heavy stuff we could not publish this little thing every month again… Much love to one and all!

Gonna be listening to all them albums in the next week in a row… Cause before we left for that little one week holiday we were sure to send our own list of favorite albums of the past month and we were happy to see many of those choices making it: Mexicoma, The Swell Fellas, Crobot, Museum Of Light, Indus Valley Kings, Phiasco, Mystery Dudes, Oreyeon, Sasquatch, Valley Of The Sun, Red Sun Atacama, AAWKS & Sergeant Thunderhoof…

But we’ve already noticed quite a few that we haven’t even had the chance to hear yet! So, next up is Demise by Solemn Ceremony! And then, all the other June Doom Charts entries… It’s gonna get loud and heavy over here!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

THE DOOM CHARTS FOR JUNE 2022

The Number One album of 2010

The Number One album of 2010

Before we start the Countdown of 2019 we look back at those past 10 years of Stoner HiVe. We know it is now the eleventh edition of the Countdown. But we celebrate 10 years. 10 years of heavy riffs, romps and stomps! 10 years of heavy magic! That all started back in 2009 when the blog started to have a vehicle to count down the best 20 albums of 2009. The edition of 2010 had 37 lists to tally which ofcourse made the outcome even more valid for that year. That list, deduced out of the lists sent in by 37 heavy music fiends,  started with Endless Boogie – Full House Head on Number 20. It featured Sasquatch – III on Number 3 and the amazing Been Obscene - The Magic Table Dance on Number 2. About the Number One album from 2010 we wrote:

“The number one album according to 37 lists sent in by the Stoner HiVe peeps; the one that bested number two with a mere six points difference; the one that received the double amount of points that number three received, is a band that has been around since 1993 and released their seventh record this year. And after only a few tones you know that this record continues where the fantastic Witchcult Today left off. Occult and bloody tales of devil-worship and hallucinogenic fantasies full satyrs and other fun scum. With a pure underground seventies sound we are treated to eight ostracisions that are both haunting and hypnotic. Furious bass; droning riffs and a voice that wails as heavy as the guitars provide a wall of sound that feels like a mythical castle to some otherworld creature. It is once again a dark and twisted record that must have been invoked by Lucifer himself. A Mass so great that its addictive power sucks you in leaves you nothing but the humming Blackness of these electrified magicians! The gold medal goes to; the number one album of 2010 according to the Stone HiVe Freaks is…”

We were honored to have Kyle aka Shasta Beast revisit the album for the HiVe…  “A long, long time ago in a HiVe far, far away, the number one place in 2010's countdown was awarded to Black Masses, the seventh entry in the long and storied career of misanthropic doom legends Electric Wizard. Continuing the group's mastery of evil down-tuned audio, upon its release Black Masses was a departure from the cleaner (by Wizard standards), more droning riffage of 2007's "Witchcult Today", wielding a crushing wall of sound coated in haze and filth that called to mind the legendary tones of "Dopesmoker". Amidst all the noise, however, were catchy and driving riffs, particularly those of "Black Mass" and "Venus in Furs", that hinted at the sleek and modern self-described boogie to come on 2017's divisive "Wizard Bloody Wizard". Taking all this into account, revisiting the album is an unexpected delight, as Black Masses shows the Wizard at some of their most energetic and adventurous, from the swirling riffs, psyched out solo, and tribal drums of the excellent "Patterns of Evil" to closer "Crypt of Drugula", a nine minute instrumental creepshow straight from a horror movie, complete with thunder and creaking, otherwordly feedback. In retrospect, Black Masses was a unique and transitional milestone between the Wizard of yore and today, and even buried among such a deep and consistently impressive catalog, the album is a standout and without a doubt still earns its warped and hellish throne at number one.”
