Rezn – Cycles In The Infinite Dream

Rezn – Cycles In The Infinite Dream
Sargent House Records – 2026
Doom, Psych, Rock, Alternative, Prog, Shoegaze
Rated: ****

Rezn comes on slow. For me at least. I can remember settling in for all those amazing Rezn albums that came before and feeling happy and content after the first listening session. Rarely did it immediately blow me out of my seat. There was of course that Collaborative album with Vinnum Sabbathi that did. And the fact that so many of their releases made the yearly Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown, thanks to all of your votes, is a testament to the fact that these guys deliver the good stuff every time again. Even if it might come on slow. But maybe… Slow is good!

Cause the same can be said for the new one. But then… When you are about to set Cycles in the Infinite Dream away for while… Zang! Suddenly, out of nowhere you are completely immersed. The collision of dreamlike beauty, with cosmic psychedelia and celestial doom, create this vast inner universe. Rob McWilliams’s soaring vocals guide the journey through waves of synth, saxophone, and lap steel, illuminating the darkness with a human glow. A truly spellbinding voyage from one of heavy music’s most transcendent forces…

Number 7

Number 7

Another big jump today. A 146 points from Black Pyramid on Number 8 to reach Number 7. Where we find a band that made last years Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown as well. And not just once. Nope, twice. One of their albums reached Number 14 and the other one, a collaborative one, came in at Number 19. They are an industrious bunch, cause back in 2020 they reached Number 13. Rife with psychedelic swirls, their progressive doom soars and pulls you along their maelstrom of magnificent riffs and almost shoegaze atmospherics. Giving the album so much soul and mysterious energy. Soaring, gliding, swimming, through this viscose sound mixture that moves the spirit and moves every fiber of your being. Just like that album from last year, for they are linked and show us a band that have gone through a lot of intense experiences together and have come out on the other side with a knowledge of more. For there’s sorcery going on here, rain stick alchemy and perhaps even more ancient magic…

According to all of your votes, on Number 7 we find:

Rezn – Burden

Number 17

Number 17

Yesterday saw Danava’s Nothing But Nothing axe slinging its way into the hearts of many rock and metal lovers on Number 18! Well, we move almost forty points to another high energy rocker on Number 17 now. One that jumped on to the Number 2 position of the July Doom Charts with their fourth full-sized album in ten year. And ten tracks that speed their way into your bloodstream, turning you into this otherworldly being, completely addicted to every one of those tracks. Metal, punk, brought at such velocity and with such power, the end result will always be the same: you are forever changed! Slightly radioactive perhaps, thanks to the off-the-wall humor, the bouncing riffs and the incredible punch it all packs!

On Number 17 we find…

Helms Alee – Keep This Be The Way

Helms Alee – Keep This Be The Way
Sargent House – 2022
Rock, Sludge, Metal, Prog
Rated: *****

The lines below appeared on the Doom Charts first, but because we want to keep track of things, we decided to repost them here as well. And hey, any extra attention for this amazing album is always a good thing! Atmospheric sludge, grunge metal, alternative everything… Whatever genres you come up with, HELMS ALEE is here to bend them, break them and turn it all into something devastatingly beautiful. It does not necessarily make sense and it definitely does not have to make sense, just take the title for instance: KEEP THIS BE THE WAY. It has a certain ring to it, a certain cadence that makes you understand it all on a totally different level. And that’s how HELMS ALEE seems to work. For me at least. It taps into something subconscious and activates all your senses. Turning all their seemingly chaotic compositions into a finely tuned clockwork of delicate grace. For even though their hardcore, noise and sludge might be brutal; whenever the wave breaks and starts the roll back, the calm, the tranquility and the expanse that opens up, immediately quenches all that mouthwatering sour with equally savoring sweetness…

Chelsea Wolfe – Birth Of Violence

Chelsea Wolfe – Birth Of Violence
Sargent House – 2019
Rock, Folk, Dark
Rated: *****

We never got around to truly mentioning that amazing album from 2017 called Hiss Spun. But now that Chelsea Wolfe returns with follow-up Birth Of Violence we can remedy our fault! Sure, Hiss Spun was much heavier and louder and used a mixture of sludge and doom to add grime and texture to her dark folk and wonderful voice. This time around there are still heavy moments and intense layers but she decided to remain more in her dark folk territory; moving towards that ghostly atmosphere and that hits just as hard. Which goes to show how powerful her voice and persona is. Strong, commanding and clear but also ethereal and unnerving. Which adds to the already eerie and sparingly used percussion. The entire record quickly become this almost blood curdling experience and is without a doubt as scary as a lone night in a haunted forest. Enchanting and intoxicating are other words that come to mind when trying to describe this record. But all of them fall short of really explaining all those feelings one experiences when listening to Chelsea Wolfe. What a record…

Lingua Ignota – Caligula

Lingua Ignota – Caligula
Sargent House/Profound Lore – 2019
Industrial, Noise, Doom, Darkwave
Rated: ***

I was sort of amazed at the limited amount of attention Caligula by Lingua Ignota was receiving from the neighboring blogs and sites. On the other hand it was only logical. For when I heard a colleague compare her and her new album’s sound to Anna Von Hausswolff rolled up in barbwire and dropped from a few flights of stairs, I Immediately understood, this isn’t for everybody. But then again, the sweet and lovely lady behind the Lingua Ignota moniker has never been catering to every soul around the globe. She is known for her dark, desperate, beautiful and chilling poetry. Other names my colleague dropped were Kate Bush mixed with Amanda Palmer; and I could not agree more. She can sing absolutely gorgeous and also use her voice as a paint remover that not only strips the walls perfectly clean but also makes your ears bleed. Harrowing and painful! An impressive piece of art that can definitely not be qualified as easy or background, this can only be digested pure, raw and with full attention. Even though it might cause you horrific nightmares…

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 Artists listened to last week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 Artists listened to last week…

As mentioned before, we returned from a wedding in Salisbury and a month-long trek through Britain just last week. So, there has been a lot of catching up to do, but also a lot of different stuff to listen to in preparation for a few interviews. Hence, the most listened to artist was Ernst Jansz. A Dutch musical legend and co-founder of CCC Inc and Doe Maar for instance. But even though the man is a bad-ass, the music has little to do with all the heaviness we rock out on over here. Like Radio Moscow’s new album New Beginnings. We’ve been following these cats since first meeting them back around 2009 when they played a dusty little wateringhole in Utrecht. And they still soar high on Cream, Zeppelin and Blue Cheer waves. We love their psychedelic rock and we reckon this one is their best effort yet! New Beginnings is out on Century Media Records and deserves everyone’s full attention! Necromandus, the story of Necromandus. Well, we will need more room for that. So we will mention them later on as well. But I would like to make sure that everyone gives this album released via Mandus Music a spin. Fans of seventies hardrock and CCR, Rush and Black Sabbath in special will immediately dig the hell out of it! I’m sure everyone knows about my obsession with Rancho De La Luna and all the people who ever set foot in there. So, when Troy van Leeuwen contributes to the new Chelsea Wolfe album Hiss Spun (out on Sargent House), you’ve got my attention. Aggressive, passionate and heavy! O’ and it also features Aaron Turner of Isis. Extremely addictive stuff! And we are still riding that majestic dragon called Lödarödböl by Texas trio Greenbeard. Such an amazing record! Blistering stoner riffage with bluesy psychedelia, precision vocal tones and a radiant progression of song craft. Let’s keep an eye on Sailor Records cause they’ve been releasing amazing stuff!

A first week of great stuff and there is so much more! So much more!
