Momovudu - Momovudu

Momovudu - Momovudu
Self-released - 2024
Rock, Metal, Stoner, Doom, Psych
Rated: ****

Momovudu, we will need to get to the bottom of this. Not just where the band name originated from or what it might mean, but also how these eight tracks were recorded. For all of them sound so alive. They creep and crawl into every fiber of your being and will become the air that you breathe. You inhale and exhale along with the drums, the bass and feel so much relief as you float away with those guitar sounds. A sound so huge, dense, thick and pulsating, that the walls that surround you will seem to be alive, grow all sorts of greenery and extend ever more outwards. The new trio called Momovudu have delivered one hell of a calling card with their debut album. Haling from Kansas City and consisting of Wo Fat contributor Matt Watkins on guitar and vocals, Nate Kiersey on bass and Brent Richards on drums, the three had the Wo Fat guru Kent Stump enlisted for the engineering and production side of things. The overal bulbous and throbbing tones, get sliced and diced by the edgy vocals and the freewheelin’ bluesy guitar work. Not just a calling card, it’s a free rocking ace!

Number 3

Number 3

This Sceptered Veil by Sergeant Thunderhoof on Number 4 missed the Number 3 position by only twelve points. But after the Number 3 album we make another huge jump in points to get to Number 2 and 1. But before we do, we are here to bow before the band and album we find on the Number 3 spot. Indeed, the Bronze Medal goes to a band that has been making the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown with almost every release they put out since we started doing this in 2009. They even reached the Number 1 spot in 2014. But also Number 8 in 2016, Number 13 in 2012 and Number 8 in 2009. That’s why we started writing a big post about all their releases when their new album came out, trying to make sense of where the new album would sit in their huge discography. But we never got around to finishing the post. Although perhaps in some other universe we did? For this album, does something to me, something a weird book called Hoe Ver Is Dunn? by strange Dutch writer Jaap Verduyn also does. It transports you straight out of the trenches into this alien world where battles are fought with swampy stoner metal riffs, blues influences and southern styled, almost jazzy jams. There is voodoo magic going on, turning all the seven songs on this album into a wild all-encompassing fiery beast of a record. Which makes it feel like poetic justice that we find it on Number 3!

The Doom Chart For May 2022

Doom Charts

The May 2022 edition of the Doom Charts is here! Only two entries carried over from the Forty we published back in April. I’m sure you can do the math, but that means, 38 new albums listed! Of a total of 255 that received votes. Although that wild ECSTATIC VISION album carried over from that post of pure adoration called Peroration. Madman Tony Maim wrote back then:

“ECSTATIC VISION have a heavy, sun-drenched psychedelic/stoner sound that pays tribute to 70’s hard rock. Vocals are clean and put through reverb for a great trippy effect. Riffs are plentiful and the dirty fuzzed sound is perfect to get your head moving. But – before you start to get too comfortable, ECSTATIC VISION throw in passages that start to pile on the intensity with meatier playing which morph Hawkwind with The Stooges! This is the good shit.”

And he was right! It might be the final post from Tony for a while, for he is taking a breather. Catch you on the flipside Madman! But, we’re also welcoming back Tom Hanno and the join-up of Monster Riff founder Pat Schober. Welcome on board, let’s set sail for uncharted waters and listen to some good and heavy stuff!

May is all sorts of heavy and heavy of all sorts! Just peruse that new edition of the Doom Charts! So many great releases once again...

Personal votes of the ones that made the list went out to: Wo Fat, Besvärjelsen, Ecstatic Vision, Geezer, Red Moon Shaman, UFOMAMMUT, The Same River, Stöner, Wucan, Helms Alee & Red Sun Atacama...

Will be doing a rundown of the entire May list in a row once again starting today! And starting with that awesome Red Sun Atacama album DARWIN!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

The Number One album of 2014

The Number One album of 2014

Before we start the Countdown of 2019 we look back at those past 10 years of Stoner HiVe. Indeed, we celebrate 10 years. 10 years of heavy riffs, romps and stomps! 10 years of heavy magic! That all started back in 2009 when the blog started, just so we would have a vehicle to count down the best 20 albums of 2009. The edition of 2014 had 86 lists to tally which of course made the outcome even more valid then when we started back in 2009. That list, deduced out of the lists sent in by 86 heavy music fiends,  started with Salem's Pot - …Lurar Ut Dig På Prärien on Number 20. It featured Brant Bjork and his Black Flower Power album on Number 3 and the amazing Clearing The Path To Ascend album by YOB on Number 2. For the entire Top 20, visit the Countdown So Far post on Stoner HiVe… But what album ended up on the Number One position back in 2014... Well, that’s when we wrote:

“We jump 90 points from YOB’s majestic album Clearing The Path to Ascend to reach the gold medal of this year’s Stoner HiVe top 20 countdown. Produced by a band that has made the countdown with almost every release the past years. Reaching Number 8 in 2009 and Number 13 in 2012. A band that inspired honorable Madman Tony to write a love letter this year and inspired so many more to vote for this band as the number one release or among the top of their favorites in 2014. And the groove is indeed strong in this band. They know how to stoner and they know how to metal. With a distinct swagger and luscious riffs that call for a spittoon looking container in the manner of stomping drums; they manage to control and evoke that late night blues feeling that flows underneath all that heavy rock. It will be that trusty companion that you will turn to whenever you need something summoned or awoken. Something swinging, with distorted fuzz, molasses sludge and hypnotic bass work. It is the voodoo they do so well! And we all know these three cats will deliver and keep delivering… Don’t mess with Texas…”

Some albums wither away with time and some age like fine wine… And we were honored to have the Original Guru, Doktor420 revisit the album and write down his findings… “ OK, I thought, that will be easy, when Joop asked for a re-review for one of our old Number Ones. I picked Wo Fat - The Conjuring because it had been one of my favorite albums in 2014. I love their Fuzz groove with the epic jam-parts, paired with enough heavy Blues and Boogie-Woogie. This time it didn't ignite. I needed several attempts to find back into it. The album has all the elements I dig: Psychedelic-Sludge-Stoner-Doom-Fatness – It’s just, well, my personal juju is low. But even so, I think  I can state: Wo-Fat is still very high.”
