Richie Dagger – Jaded Man

Richie Dagger – Jaded Man
Quadrofoon Records – 2012
Rock, Punk, Psych, Garage
Rated: ****

Named after a song by The Germs. Founded by surviving members from the incredible Dutch formation Hooghwater and the fine Belgian punks The Reactionaires back in 2011. Richie Dagger is actually a reformed and renamed version of Restless Youth, who quickly recorded a fine selection of demo songs called Area51 Sessions in the Eindhoven skate park with the same name. And only a few months after that the time was ripe to record a full-sized debut; which they entitled: Jaded Man. Ten fast paced punk songs that hold their love for the sixties psychedelic garage front and center. With an intense drive and a funky groove these riff powerhouses whirl around you and turn you upside down. And don’t worry; there is still a hint of the Hooghwater beauty in there as well. This is criminally good!

Gingerpig – Demo

Gingerpig – Demo
Unreleased – 2009
Rock/Psychedelica/Blues/Stoner
Waardering: ****

Founded by former Gorefest guitarplayer Boudewijn Bonebakker and with drummer Ries Doms audible on this unreleased demo. Gingerpig is a band without boundaries or lines within which the sound needs to be colored and with a massive love for vinyl and analog. The band has a record-deal with Suburban and their debut-album The Ways Of The Gingerpig will be released at the end of April. And even though the sound quality of this unreleased demo is very poor the amount of freedom and musicality displayed by the band is already pretty incredible. Hopefully there will already be a record available during the Roadburn Introduces gig on Saturday at 13:30 in Cul De Sac. Cause personally I can’t wait to hear these freaks live and on vinyl!

Roadburn

Roadburn

One more day left, thirty hours and counting till Roadburn… The blood is boiling and the skin is itching… Sold out in 15 minutes once again and it will surely also be one gigantic awesome trip once more; as it is every year. With so many great bands in the line-up it will be impossible to catch them all. And should the choice become too difficult; then we can always just sit in the sun with a beer or two and relax for a moment. Be sure to catch the Gingerpig gig in Cul De Sac though on Saturday at 13:30… It will be testament to pure free rock!

Hooghwater quits…

Hooghwater quits…

Today we bring you sad news… One of the most interesting and genuine bands hailing from the Netherlands of late had decided to call it quits. Hooghwater is no more. The band was on the verge of entering the studio and producing a follow up to the brilliant record Echos from 2009. But before you do that you have to have everybody looking in the same direction. Difference in view on which creative path to take seems to have caused the rift. Drummer Ries Doms: “Sometimes you have to sit down and compare views. And sometimes this means you come to a conclusion that everybody wants to do something else. But our friendship was never on the line.” (3voor12 Tilburg) Now we will have to wait to see what the other guys will be doing; cause Doms was of course already preparing his fellowship with The Kik. But I reckon all of us would rather see him continue to play with Gingerpig; and of course Hooghwater… Sniff…

Hooghwater - Hooghwater EP

Hooghwater - Hooghwater EP
Quadrofoon – 2008
Rock/Psychedelica/Stoner
Waardering: *****

When the first EP of Dutch Hooghwater graced my ears in 2008; it took my breath away. Where had this band come from and how were they able to produce five stunning tracks without getting any notice in the press? Even now, after they released their full-sized album Echos last year; they have yet to receive the attention they deserve. The five tracks from 2008 are full of driving grooves and hinted at the extremely diverse and convincing psychedelica they would end up making for Echos. A great mix of energetic garagerock, melodic stoner and sixties melancholy. Back then they produced this thing with only the three before become the foursome they are now. Let’s blow up the dykes so everyone gets licked by Hooghwater…
