Big Business – The Beast You Are

Big Business – The Beast You Are
Joyful Noise/Gold Metal – 2019
Rock, Noise, Sludge
Rated: ****

It has been out now for a couple of months and we already mentioned it a while ago when we stated what we had listened to the most in April. But when a record feels this good for the summer heat once revisited; I reckon we should do a bit more... With members that already earned their spurs in The Melvins, Murder City Devils and Karp, their own band Big Business has been one of those twisted amalgam of styles that originate from those mentioned bands and more. We can hear psychedelic heavy metal, noise, hard rock, sludge, punk and weird other tidbits. And on The Beast You Are it is all there in superb form. It is rock. Heavy rock. Heavy, loud and cumbersome and finally Big Business has managed to make all the pieces fall into the exact right place. On earlier records the band always had the tendency to become a bit too experimental. But on The Beast You Are there is finally room for something else, something more and something that immediately feels right to the beast inside. Thanks to a more uniform sound and great production there is a crispness to the compositions that make the tracks wash over you like warm waves of heavy bliss. And even though every track is heavy and huge, there is also something subtle about it all. Showing us, very carefully that there is beauty to be found in each and every earthquake…

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Morning everyone. It’s Monday! And at Stoner HiVe we usually try  to put together a quick list of the most listened to albums of the past week. We limit it to five even though there is a multitude of other records that got a few spins. Well, here’s the rundown. The Beast You Are might very well be the best Big Business record to date! Out on Gold Metal Records and Joyful Noise Recordings, there are so many different approaches on can take to this album. Intricate weirdness and twisted heaviness! Reek of STOOM tipped us about the Australian five-piece Giant Dwarf! What a freaking sweet fuzzy desert and stoner rock record. That went on repeat very quickly! Hell yeah! Sophomore album Dos(e) by Black Medicine out on Baby Gas Mask Records has this very different groove going on. Highly addictive once you’ve gotten a dose in ya! And you’d better, cause some medicine should be taken on a daily basis! And since all of you read up on the HiVe every day, (coughcough) you’ve already seen Hey Satan and their Orange Moon album come up. Featuring ten hard rocking, stoner trucking tracks that are comprised out of twin guitars and a stampeding crazy drummer. It’s a wild release once again by Cold Smoke Records! Last but certainly not least, Cracked Machine! The Call Of The Void comes out on PsyKa Records and the seven heavy psychedelic tracks will quickly make you turn on and tune in! Mostly instrumental and completely amazing! Check it out! Check’m all out!

Helldorado

Helldorado!

Only a few days to go to the first edition of Helldorado! The festival that, let’s not kid ourselves, is the continuation of what Speedfest already was. This time around it might even become crazier, weirder and more dangerous! With clowns, bearded ladies and knife throwers everywhere! Yes, it’s a rock ‘n roll freakshow! And what about that line-up! Bands like Triggerfinger, The Darkness, Red Fang, Orange Goblin, Komatsu, Duel, Monomyth, Nashville Pussy, Imperial State Electric, Big Business, Lords of Altamont, Birth of Joy, Tigre Blanco, Dead Lord, Mambo Kurt, La Muerte, Fifty Foot Combo and the amazing Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds! Throw in some other crazy stuff, comedians and travelling karaoke machines that might just show right behind you when you’re taking a leak and you know you are in for one hell of a ride! This might be worse than the Circus Circus on a Friday night in Las Vegas… Ooh yes! Way worse! Still a few tickets left! Go grab’m and join the freakshow!!!

Big Business – Battlefields Forever

Big Business – Battlefields Forever
Gold Metal Records/Solar Flare Records – 2013/2015
Rock, Stoner, Sludge, Metal
Rated: ****

The former duo Big Business return to the fight with their new album, which was released in 2013, Battlefields Forever. Okay, so let’s quickly explain those weird statements in that first sentence. Big Business, comprised out of Jared Warren and Coady Willis, who also play in Melvins, among others, added a third member to their band in the name of Scott Martin who also plays in 400Blows and Crom. After which they released Battlefields Forever on their side of the Atlantic pond in 2013. But it has only recently become available in the rest of the world. Although everyone could ofcourse always buy everything on the internet, French label Solar Flare Records did the right thing and put everything into motion over here in the old world. And like we already said, righteously so, cause the Seattle sludge metal formation outdid themselves with Battlefields Forever. Fast and furious on some moments, packing mighty punches and uppercut explosions, they turn into a torrid or a slow drench the next. This is no strength in numbers release, for each of the nine tracks on this album has something special to it. So, join the fight, and remember: who dares wins!
