Marmalade Knives
Sweatmaster
Pale Horse Ritual

I think we do not need to mention once again that the week flew by. We all know it. We all experience it. Time is moving ever faster. And the amount of great releases keeps on growing. October has been insane in that respect and that will surely be reflected in the Doom Charts going live this Friday. But until then, we hope to do a few reviews, or at least as much as last week! Cause we did manage to mention that amazing Florist album, the stunning Howling Giant, the great Pink Fuzz and that wild Zhaat record. But we could have and should have mentioned way more. Man, there’s a lot of great music out there! Hope you crazies out there follow other sites as well, cause Stoner HiVe alone can only serve you with a small drip of heaviness on that ever larger burning plate of great releases… Go check out all we mentioned and perhaps you will find yourself your new favorite album! Have a great week!

It’s Monday! The start of a new week! The first full week to start after our return from Italy. It’s always heavy on the nerves getting back into the swing of things that first week. Obligations swarming in from everywhere. Less than fun rent paying stuff you need to deal with. The bad news hitting you from every angle. Holy hell people. Why. And where are we going with all those horrible developments. Sigh…

But luckily we have the warmth of our little niche to curl up into and get out of the cold. Those amazing albums young and old to keep us sane. Above are the ten we listened to the most past week. And thanks to our resident poet Ronny Dijksterhuis we also already had a few posts up. Did you read his awesome Wąż – Monolith review? Or his Doūsk - Live!? Both reviews and albums worth every minute of your time! We of course mentioned those Doom Charts posts and managed to write a few words about the new Trainer ourselves. Oh, Mandy does not come out till August, but when it comes, it gives, without taking... Yes, we could not contain ourselves. It’s that good! Got a few things brewing that I hope to finish in the next few days. Barring even worse world wide developments or rent paying stuff that needs to be done, it will happen. And for all of you, I hope your week will be brilliant, the sun will shine and you can smile at all the beauty that nature has to offer…

We ended with a few words about that cool 2023 reissue of the sole full-sized album by classic rock outfit Brotherhood of Peace, which also included a few bandcamp codes! And besides the list you can view above we had to mention that damn cool video for Flight Of The Sloths by No Man’s Valley and the new Greenleaf video. And out petition is working. Those awesome shirts from the video produced by Tommi Holappa’s daughter will get a proper print! Go check out the video’s and all them bands on the list! Enjoy yer week!

Duster – Remote Echoes

Duster – Remote Echoes
Konkurrent / Numero – 2023
Rock, Lo-fi, Indie, Mumblecore
Rated: ***

I’ve never been a huge listener of Duster. I do have all their albums. And definitely appreciate their version of slowcore. But I simply need to have everything Duster, Helvetia and Built To Spill because of the obsession thing. My obsession with Rancho De La Luna grew to encompass every member of every band that ever recorded in Rancho. Or actually just set foot in that magical studio in the desert. And of course, since Jason Albertini was a part of Queens Of The Stone Age in the very beginning, we need to keep track of everything Mr. Albertini does. Another reason Duster never got much playtime over here, is simply because they were largely unknown over in Europe at the moment they were truly active, back in the nineties. But after re-releasing their debut album Stratosphere for its 25th Anniversary two months ago, they obviously went through the back catalogue of home recordings and found more sketches from that time still lying about. This resulted in the fourteen pieces of music on Remote Echoes, old demo’s, obscure pieces of tracks once released on cassette, all like snapshots from a long forgotten past. The dusty atmosphere ever present, the fourteen tracks, lasting less than thirty minutes give you a glance into the messy bedroom all this was recorded in. Fragmentary, lo-fi, like a collage of incomplete memories the tracks give off that post-rocking, slow-coring, slacker, lethargic spirit with as little effort as possible. The insights given do take you back to that bedroom just mentioned, that filthy room everyone once had. Messy, and dubious stains everywhere… Or as they state themselves: cigarette bums, weed crumbs and stained coffee-cups…

The Doom Charts For June 2023

Doom Charts

“Heavy music will not be contained. Heavy music breaks free. Heavy music expands to new territories. It crashes through barriers. Painfully, perhaps even dangerously. But, err, there it is, heavy music finds a way…”
~ Ian Malcolm

Here we are with the brand-new June 2023 edition of the Doom Charts. Featuring no less than 40 fresh and minty albums. Quite a few self-released albums charted the Top 25 this edition, which always warms our heart. But to our regret and sorrow we must lament, quite a few albums that aren’t featured on Bandcamp are also high on the list. We don’t want to keep singing the praise of Bandcamp continuously, but it works like a charm and has become a definite cornerstone of the Heavy Underground. Right? So, we do wonder why those bands do not take advantage of said platform. It’s another and much-loved way to get the word out on your glorious new album. But hey, those albums which can be heard online, can be heard online here, just scroll down and press play on all those thirty-six amazing new albums. Cause they rose to the top of 272 albums that received votes this month. And those other four? Well, the cool Rob Hammer features one on his Youtube channel… Another one can be found on Headbanger Channel and for the others, well, the Heavy Underground will find a way… Cause heavy, errr, all good music always finds a way…

It's got a bite and it's got a bark! And no, it's not a dinosaur... It's the June 2023 Doom Charts!!

And featuring at least 13 albums I voted for... To wit: Saint Karloff, BLACK RAINBOWS, Snakemother, Lamassu, Queens of the Stone Age, Mammatus, ROYAL THUNDER, Yawning Man, mouth, The Dirty Seeds, RIVAL SONS, From The Ages & New Dawn Fades...

Gonna be listening to The Slow Voyage now and working my way all the way to Number One in the next few days...

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

We had our little goddaughter for the weekend, which meant very limited time to go through all those May Doom Charts albums. But we shall continue that run down as of today. And when Queens of The Stone Age drop an album, you of course sit up and pay attention. But I sat up ever straighter hearing that new EP by Phe. Five tracks leagues ahead of what they did with the first EP and their album Glooming Dawn. And we are honored to let you guys know, we will be premiering their first single Saviour on Wednesday!! Can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Morning everyone. Just a quick note on that monthly Top 10. We just post that quickly and never edit it. On the weekly list we take the liberty to edit out those artists that don’t need that little bit of  extra encouragement to listen to. Artists that are already huge enough like Queens of The Stone Age or artists; (that even though they have some merit for the HiVe) that we listened to for interview purposes like Melissa Etheridge. So here’s the Top 5 Most Listened to Last Week and then we should really get down to perusing the February 2019 edition of the Doom Charts! Cause that is an insane one! Silver Devil’s new album Paralyzed, released by Ozium Records, is quickly becoming a household favorite. 5th on the Doom Charts this month and 1st in my head at the moment! What an album! Stomping stoner and high energy grooves! Also on the weekly list like last week: LáGoon and their The Unwelcome album; garage doom and fuzzed out rock, skater vibe stoner and punky metal. Out on Forbidden Place Records and another absolute must have! And so is the glorious Pfund album! It’s on constant rotation over here! New on the list is the December 2018 through I-Hate released album Pray For Doom by German fourpiece Dawn Of Winter. Doom in every sense of the word! But with an almost opera like stance the compositions take on this grandiose atmosphere. Lovely! And then there’s Gone Cosmic with their Sideways In Time album, released through Kozmik Artifactz. Set for an early April release this is some grade A, female fronted psych rock, it whirls and it winds and it wails like a hard rocking banshee on the prowl! Simply stunning! But I guess they all are! So check’m out! Check’m all out!

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Another week has passed and yes, once again a day late with the Top 5 Most Listened to list. But that’s just how it goes and we all know the deal. Work and no fun! But luckily we did have fun listening to those albums these Five artists delivered. First off, we won’t list Queens Of The Stone Age, cause that’s another band we listened to a lot, it has a sort of mantra to it that makes it easy getting a lot of work done. But when new stuff comes on, you just have to focus, pay attention and let yourself be mesmerized by those albums. Like LáGoon and their The Unwelcome album; garage doom and fuzzed out rock, skater vibe stoner and punky metal. Out on Forbidden Place Records and an absolute must have! But so is Silver Devil and their through Ozium Records released new album Paralyzed. Sweden turns out to be the stomping ground for massive stoner gold once again. High energy grooves that move and stun! Can’t get enough of it! Just like Pfund’s album! Pfund is exciting, crazy and simply glorious! As we already mentioned last week. The Akashic Record by Professor Electric came out a few months ago; a hideous one-man band preaching hellfire and brimstone across the desert sand as he states himself. Or as the honorable Frazer Jones from Desert Psychlist states: “Take some early Captain Beefheart quirky bluesiness sprinkle with a smattering of funk and a pinch of stuttering fuzziness and voila…” Indeed, let’s take some Beefheart! Stone Golem from the Netherlands pushes their space oriented rock opera In The Shadow Of A Titan towards a stonerrock horizon and sun dried riffs. But then enter the atmospheric elements; and enchant you like a lost soul in the desert, dying of thirst and suddenly staring at a mirage oasis… Absolutely brilliant album! But I guess they all are! So check’m out! Check’m all out!

Komatsu – New Horizon

Komatsu – New Horizon
Argonauta – 2018
Metal, Sludge, Stoner
Rated: ****

We’ve been spinning this cracker for a while now and we’ve been digging the Komatsu sound ever since they came out swinging back in 2010. Oh yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Komatsu crazies have already been building their own stoner and sludge metal legacy for eight years now. Albums like Manu Armata from 2013 and Recipe For Murder One from 2016 were well received and with those notches on their belt they toured Europe alongside John Garcia and Nick Oliveri. And they also played pre-shows for Brant Bjork, Alfredo Hernandez’s Avon, and Josh Homme’s Queens Of The Stone Age. So, they’ve managed to play for most of the Kyuss members. Lucky bastards! Currently returning from touring South America for a second time, they’ve steamrolled through every one of the venues they played at and I’m pretty sure the Brasilian crowd has been digging the hell out of it! Cause the New Horizon record adds even more depth to the supermassive sludge machine that is Komatsu. With the ever-present gargantuan groove, intense riffs and fierce tones their stoner and sludge gets a hefty dose of atmospheric elements. Adding not just depth but a lot of width to their compositions. Ominous on some moments and almost spacey at others. The ten songs drag you along towards an endless Komatsu horizon. There’s simply no way around the fact that Komatsu has produced a record that will leave every metal lover breathless…

The Chats – Get This In Ya

The Chats – Get This In Ya
Self released / Hot Wax Records / Burger Records – 2017
Rock, Punk, Garage
Rated: ***

Whenever a certain drummer starts championing you and a certain ginger Elvis as well... Things can get ugly in a hurry! The Chats and their Smoko video is suddenly whirling round the globe and these punks were already blowing up big time over in Australia... It's definitely doing something to me! And touring with Queens Of The Stone Age will definitely do something to them. So, before things get out of hand completely we figured we visit their Get This In Ya EP from 2017. Punky, grimy, choppy rock that speaks to your atavistic side in every which way. It’s definitely about living down under, it’s definitely about having no money and it’s definitely about nothing. Nothing at all! Which seems to be the only great reason to make damn good music. Frantic, anxious and delirious. The Chats bring the right amount of energy to translate their languid punk and lazy Australian drawl into something highly energetic! The Grohl was right…

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 Artists listened to last week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 Artists listened to last week

We haven’t had much time the past month. It showed in updates and it showed in the amount of new albums listened to. Well, we have a bit more time now. For a week or two. So, we did a lot of listening again. Ofcourse everything the Doom Chart mentioned was high on the list. But we could not shy away from the new Queens Of The Stone Age. They have to this album not released a bad one. Although Era Vulgaris wasn’t really my cup of tea. And it seems this one will neither. Unfortunately. Not that it’s a bad album. It just doesn’t seem to move me. And that is what it is aimed at, physically, actually moving, I read. In preparation for an interview with Mr. Gilbert we listened to Mr.Big a lot. But what really moved us was the new Mother Engine! These German cats know how to rev up the machine! Another one that inspired is Greenbeard. Lödarödböl is a truly stunning piece of work; artwork included! Last but certainly not least, Red Mountains from Norway, have returned with a beautiful record. It shall be released at beginning of September and will surely captivate all you lovely freaks out there! See the mention tomorrow for a few more words about Red Mountains new album Slow Wander. But for now, turn up the volume and let the cool tunes set the right mood!

Number 19

Number 19

After going into the space of old with Re-Stoned on Number 20 we now climb only one point to find a stoner machine. A sludge monster. A beast that has been growing into something gigantic since its birth back in 2010. Slowly capturing the imagination of everyone in the world. Not to mention almost every Kyuss member ever. Cause they can proudly claim to have shared a stage with John Garcia, Nick Oliveri, Josh Homme and Alfredo Hernandez. Touring with John one year and Nick the next. Who also plays on the new record by the freaking way. Opening up for the new Hernandez band Avon a few months and Queens Of The Stone Age a few years ago. But even if that is quite something, the new album is the real reason we are here. There is no holding back on this one, they go all out and seem to have found their sludge rock, stoner metal forte. Bigger, badder and bolder! The growth and simple brilliance displayed on this record is stunning and will leave you breathless. Yes, we are talking about those freaks from my hometown and their new recipe. So, enough about me! So, how’s about… ?

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra – Broken Lines

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra – Broken Lines
Party Smasher Inc/V2 – 2016
Rock, Hard, Prog
Rated: ****

When I first learned about this project it still featured or was rumored to feature Juliette Lewis on vocals. It would have truly made this supergroup something to look forward to. When she dropped out my lust for the Giraffe Tongue Orchestra weakened. But luckily, the beast still wandered into my path. For come on, you cannot pass over on a band featuring guitarist Brent Hinds (Mastodon), vocalist William DuVall (Alice In Chains), guitarist Benjamin Weinman (Dillinger Escape Plan), drummer Thomas Prigden (Mars Volta) and Pete Griffin (Dethklok, Zappa Plays Zappa). O’ and Jon Theodore (Queens Of The Stone Age, Mars Volta) also guests on two tracks. The honor roll sounds like a veritable playground of intricate compositions and a whirlwind tornado of riffs, notes and tones. But this time around these fiends who love to freak out with their respective bands have kept the extremes to a minimum. They’ve actually managed to pour their challenging technic displays into something easier to digest and mixed with much simpler straight to the core rock songs. Or even almost danceable grooves with songs like Blood Moon and Everyone Gets Everything They Really Want. But we must conceded that Duvall sounds excellent on almost every track and even seems to push his boundaries. Not to mention the ace duo vocals of him and Hinds on No-one Is Innocent. Does all of this make us forget that the Broken Lines album might have been completely different with Miss Lewis on vocals? Perhaps not, because we still get a tiny taste when she does background for the Back To The Light song. And perhaps so, cause with ten highly different tracks and atmospheres we can safely say there is enough for everyone and a lot for a lot of us. Hell, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra might just win all of us over…

Interview - Nick Oliveri

Interview – Nick Oliveri

“So if you ask me about the desert, the place I come from and all of my musical friends and what makes us so special, I say: nothing. But I’m glad you dig us!”

This interview was done way back. When the summer was settling and a lot of bad things in the world hadn’t happened yet. At that time it wasn’t even certain the Man and his band would return to Europe in the fall and play the Speedfest festival in Eindhoven tomorrow. But there was talk it would happen and he hoped it would…

We’re at De Pul in Uden. A lovely venue in the heart of one of the southern regions of that little country called the Netherlands. A lot of stoner and desert bands have found their way here, to De Pul in Uden. And today we find Mr. Nick Oliveri hanging at the bar with a beer in front of him. He was a bit late for the soundcheck. The shows he did before got out of hand perhaps? Or was it the tattoo he got earlier that day that messed up his schedule? Although we reckon a schedule never bothered, the bass player for the most important albums of Kyuss and Queens Of The Stone Age. He’s tired. Dog tired. And it takes some maneuvering to jog him awake and talk a bit about his latest album Uncontrollable and everything else that Nick Oliveri stands for…

A few minutes in. The man yawns. The man gives answers he’s give multiple times during all the interviews the past months and gives answers to questions that weren’t even asked. He sips his beer and is probably thinking about the acoustic show later on or about what happened last night. So instead of continuing on with this line of question; we halt. And start with silly questions about bunnies, his baldness, the SWAT team and what the best gift for him would be… Right now… “Right now? Shit man… A gram of speed? Sorry man, need to get my head on straight. Dog tired and foggy as hell!”

So why have you stopped performing naked most of the time?

Oliveri: “Actually. I finished a tour with The Dwarves recently and I played naked a couple of shows. But to be honest. It’s not very fun to watch anymore. You know. It’s like an old man in a sleeping back. Sagging. Old. Hairy. But I could also give you a corny answer and say that tonight on stage, I’ll be wearing my clothes but will be performing absolutely naked. It’s just me, my guitar and my stories. No band to hide behind. Nothing to hide behind. It’s just me. And it’s gonna be awesome. Or I’m gonna tank it. But it’s me.”

Why are you doing it solo? Isn’t it much more fun to tour as a band? Or is it because of financial stuff?

Oliveri: “Yeah man. Do you know what its costs to tour Europe for a month with a complete band? Besides that, the songs demand this kind of performance. And I like doing this man. Have always done this and will continue to do it this way. You know. Ofcourse it’s more fun to tour with friends. But it’s also much more hassle. This is much easier in a way but also much more demanding. Cause it’s just you. You have to do everything and you will be graded. But don’t worry, we’re coming back. In fact at the end of the year Mondo is coming to Europe. Full band. And we’ll play Speedfest in Eindhoven, which sounds like a righteous party. Psyched to play there! And after that we might have time to record something new… You know, back during the Songs For The Deaf tour when we had nights off, I would be walking into local bars asking if I could play acoustic there that night. For a couple of beers. Never asked for any money. It was just me. Sometimes Mark Lanegan would accompany me. But that’s where it’s at for me. Music is my life, my love and my drug. I gotta have it.” (The European Mondo Generator tour starts at Speedfest, tomorrow, 21-11-15, after which they will be joined by Komatsu; who toured with John Garcia last year. And who are about to release their new album.)

You never asked for any money to play? It seems you’re also the cat from the Kyuss line-up that made the least amount of dough at all?

Oliveri:  “Yeah, I fucked up a lot of things and a lot of times. But I was never in it for the money. Still ain’t. It’s my 'endless vacation' man. The Ramones sang it right. Haha. But seriously, I made some dough with Kyuss and Qotsa, but not that much. Never went back to ask for any money neither. When the boys couldn’t get the bass right for Vista Chino, they were working with some other guy before me, they called me in. I came in, did all the lines and at the end they handed me some money. I was just, thanks guys. Cool to have a couple of bucks. How was I supposed to know the dudes got a damn good amount for it? That’s what’s fucked up about the business man. As soon as business becomes involved, as soon as money becomes involved, it stops being about the music. Not sure if there will ever be another Vista Chino record, but I doubt they will invite me or Fevery to play on it. Although, if they do call, I’ll be ready.”

The Dutch magazine I write for did a poll about the most influential albums of the past 50 years. There were only three albums from the nineties that made the list. And the only record from the two-thousands that made it on the list was Songs For The Deaf. So you’re telling me you never made much money with a record that is equal to Dark Side Of The Moon, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Tommy, Led Zeppelin IV, Pet Sounds and all those other greats?

Oliveri: “Wow. Wow. Really? That’s so great. Wow. I’m really awed now man. (Silence) You know, that was really the best time of my life. When we recorded Songs For The Deaf, I was playing with a Josh Homme who was at the top of his game and the best drummer ever Dave Grohl. And then there was Mark Lanegan who came in and we had three different vocalists. And everything on that record just came together. We knew we made something good. We all knew it. And I was in my thirties. We couldn’t fuck anything up. We tried. We did all sorts of weird stuff. But everything we did was accepted or even awed and seen as something great and original. Wow man. It’s amazing to hear that the album is getting so much recognition. Like I said before, I wasn’t in it for the money, neither one of us were when we recorded it. We just went in and did what we wanted to do at the best of our capabilities.”

So how would you rate your Mondo Generator and solo albums compared to that one?

Oliveri: “As useless crap! Haha. Well, no. It doesn’t hold a candle to that record or to what we did with Kyuss. But there as some good songs on it man. You know. It’s like a diary for me.”

Well, the new Uncontrollable album is already recognized as being pretty personal. But how personal were Cocaine Rodeo or A Drug Problem That Never Existed?

Oliveri: “They all are in a way. I come in and sing. I got some taglines or chorus or sentences I always go back to. And then I enter what’s been going on in my life or head at that time. You know. I had a book of lyrics stolen from me once by an ex-girlfriend. And since then I never write shit down.”

That also happened to Alex Turner. O’ and ofcourse the new album by Kurt Cobain soon to be released could be seen as a similar kind of action.

Oliveri: “Yeah man. That pisses me of to no end. That fucking vindictive bitch. I bet Courtney is behind it all. Like all the documentaries. Fuck man. Don’t mess with the guy. He had issues. Problems. So do all of us. And now we need to read his journals? His journals man! His private thoughts. For all we know he wrote pages full about soup or how he wanted to dress up as Hitler. He might come across as a total idiot then. But have you never had silly or weird thoughts? Private thoughts! The same goes for his songs. Those were unfinished for a reason. Sure, there might be one or two that were done but never got recorded. But most of them were sketches. They were deemed not good enough. Keep your hands of them. Fuck. So I need to get rid of all my unfinished music quick. Cause if I don’t and I die some asshole will find them and release them as the Oliveri Recordings and make a ton of money because I died in a fucked up way. Not that I’m comparing myself to Cobain here! I’m just saying. My private thoughts are mine. And so is my music. The music I want you guys to hear is the music I send out into the world. Fuck man. It can really piss me off.”

I can see that. It really affects you. Are you that easily riled up and can you use that for your music?

Oliveri: “Yeah. Well. I have had a bit of anger problem. But for the most part I have everything under control. Now. And yes, it’s an emotion I can use. Both on stage and during the recording. I’ve been screaming my lungs out for the better part of my life. If I didn’t have that side, I would have given up already.”

Does it also work against you when it comes to music?

Oliveri: “Yeah, good idea to add ‘when it comes to music’ cause I sure as hell fucked up many things I my life. Haha. And well. When the final mixes come in than I usually go berserk. Cause normally it never sounds like I really wanted it to sound. But in the case of Uncontrollable, I was there every step of the way and ofcourse played most of everything myself. With a little help here and there from my friends. You know. Dean Ween, Stephen Haas, my man Bruno Fevery. But I debated everything Harper (Hug) and Trevor (Whatever) decided during the recoding at Thunder Underground. So when the final mixes came back, I was immediately, yeah I’m done. This is how I wanted it. That’s a great feeling man.”

So can you always record or can you sometimes come in like a Little Richard and shout: “The Lord doesn’t want to sing today!” And leave again?

Oliveri: “Haha. No man. I can’t afford to do it like that. I got two days, five days or two weeks in a studio and during that time, shit has to be done. And I don’t like wasting anyone’s time. So if I really feel like I am not hitting it, then I just say that. And try to do something else. But when something is going great, then we just keep at it. And sometimes you can slug out entire albums in one sitting. That’s fucking rad man. When that happens you got this crazy grin on your face for a week.”

So what recording, not counting your very own work or Kyuss or Qotsa are you most proud of?

Oliveri: “Fuck. That’s impossible to answer. I really dig the song I did with Slash. It’s on my phone. Will let you hear in a minute. It’s pretty badass. But don’t think it will be released any time soon. Cause there’s swearing on it and Slash doesn’t want any bad language on his records anymore because of his kids. (Rolls eyes) I always scream my lyrics, I like how I sound that way. But this producer really pushed me with my singing, I dig how it turned out. Sounds a bit foreign or something. Really cool.” (Chains & Shackles appeared on the Australian version of the 2010 Slash album only. And was re-recorded with the Avenged Sevenfold singer M.Shadows as Nothing To Say. And apparently Oliveri never got any notification of this.)

I had thought you would come out with something recorded in the Rancho De La Luna studios. And something I always ask every artist that ever set foot in that place: what do you think the magical thing is about the Rancho?

Oliveri: “You can make everything magical man. You just have to believe in it. It’s just a studio and just a cool place. But if you want to build a legend around it or put more value on something that’s plain normal. Go right ahead. It just makes things easier for me. The same goes for the desert man. I’ve been to all kinds of deserts all across the world. They’re all shitty fucked up places. But if people want to drive into the desert, see a bunch of cactuses and think that’s magical. Be my guest. You know. But that’s the case with every fucked up place. Go to Norway. It’s fucking cold. It’s shitty that it’s that cold. But you can see a lot of snow and a bunch of stars and that’s magical. So if you ask me about the desert, the place I come from or all of my musical friends and what makes us so special, I say: nothing. But I’m glad you dig us!”

Happy World Kyuss Day !

Happy World Kyuss Day !

A very happy World Kyuss Day from all of us at Stoner HiVe! We've started the day by listening to the Sons Of Kyuss recordings. After which we will move on to Wretch, Blues For The Red Sun, Welcome To Sky Valley and ending with ...And The Circus Leaves Town. Rest assured we will be listening to the Demon Cleaner EP's, Green Machine 7 Inch, Gardenia and all the rest as well... But what should we continue with after the Kyuss / Queens Of The Stone Age split?

How will you continue on?

Pukkelpop – 2014

Pukkelpop – 2014

A quick and none detailed rundown; cause it's been three days ago! It was one of those years that the surprises were limited to one or two acts and the ones that we hoped would deliver, did it righteously so. Apart from maybe one… It was one of those years where after the evening had fallen on the first day you could see a crazy blonde little white glue sniffing girl jump on stage with every act screaming: “I think yer freaky and I like it lot!” Or that might have been caused by the weird stuff that might have been thrown in yer beer when you weren’t looking…

It was dry. Or almost dry. Only a little spot of rain here and there and that was much better than we had hoped for. And so was Wallace Vanborn. On the verge of releasing their third album The Orb We Absorb recorded in Rancho De La Luna under guidance of Chris Goss they had the honor of opening the 2014 edition of the Belgian festival Pukkelpop. With a hazy sun and a first beer we witnessed them explode on stage.

The songs from the earlier albums were hectic, loud and rough and the few new ones were more virtuous and made one long for intense heat and dubious amounts of whisky… What an opener! The rest of that first day we swerved around hoping for intense surprises, but they were limited. We thought Hozier might do the trick, but apart from their amazing hit single Take Me To Church, it was fairly flat. Die Antwoord delivered the entertainment goods and planted the freaky line firm in our heads… Weird selections for the main stage; that is another thing that made up Pukkelpop 2014. Cause when Janelle Monáe is performing for forty-five people and a handful of alpacas, I reckon something went wrong…

The next day we hitch-hiked (once again, cause that damn bus system in Belgium is too weird) back to the festival and were in time to run around a bit. But we wanted to see what The Van Jets were up to nowadays. They did not really seem to turn us on, but it was good to wake up to properly with some Grimbergen Blond and other beers. We decided to make our way early to the Shelter stage where Kadavar would play and Truckfighters would follow.

Both shows were amazing, loud and good but Truckfighters was way better and way more energetic. Although the drummer of Kadavar is always a sight for sore eyes. But the rest of the Kadavar show could not pull you in; perhaps due to a weird limiter that sometimes took effect in the Shelter. Truckfighters is another beast in itself; bang, bang, bang and kaboom! Holy hell. What a show it was. After which we wandered from one act to another hoping for revelations of instigations…

On the final day we finally grabbed a bus to the festival and prepared for the QOTSA family day. Unfortunately Sweethead disappointed. Especially the lovely Serrina Sims. It sounded like she had not sung in quite a while. Now, she never was the greatest vocalist, but she did have pazzaz. In this case it all seemed to falter. One or two songs she could bring properly and they ended with The Great Disruptor; which was probably the only memorable song in the set. Later on we would see Brody Dalle almost stumble and fall as well. Luckily she could just in time regain her strength and started punking the whole tent up.

But before that we saw Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats. Who unfortunately were plagued by sound troubles during the first two songs; driving some people out of the tent. Who then missed what turned out to be a damn performance. Later on we saw Red Fang in the tent who were pleasantly surprised themselves by the reception and the fact a lot of folks new them and their songs. Like Truckfighters they tore the tent up and got the crowd going berserk.

After which it was time for the headlining show of Queens Of The Stone Age. And they delivered once again; with a perfect execution of a greatest hits show they moved through all of the albums and performed every one of them with immaculate precision. Massive, meticulous, marauding and even wild on occasion. It wasn’t as dangerous as it used to be; but the Queens are a completely different animal nowadays. And we dug the hell out of it! It was a perfect ending to three days of amazing and fairly dry fun. As a desert we got a tight performance by Portishead; who were just as precise as their hard rocking counter parts who played before…

And then the next morning you wake up and try to remember why those three days seem like only one and you envision yourself in a park somewhere in your neighborhood just sitting on the grass drinking lukewarm beer out of a plastic cup and every now and again jumping up, dancing and screaming: “I think yer freaky and I Like it a lot!”

Number 4

Number 4

“It has a big round raisin toffee fruitiness and the a dark amber color. There’s not a great deal to smell in this beer save for a slight woody toffee which is a shame. And there’s woodiness in the flavor too, it’s a brown resinous timber and it backs up the fruitiness very well. The hops are crisp and crunchy, sharp with brambles and they lead to a decent dry finish.”

We climb yet again only one point after enjoying the magical Abra Kadavar and find ourselves at Number 4. It is one of those albums that received as much flak from the early fans as it received praise from the later ones. And the other way around. For it moved every further away from the obscure, weird, rough and heavy beginnings towards something big, colorful and poppy. There is still that air of strange and dry heat surrounding it and there’s still enough of that gritty desert atmosphere permeating the songs. But not everyone has declared their love for this album; but the ones that conjured this one up will not care. For apparently dying a couple of hours, fighting with your brothers from the early days and fathering a couple of children changes you. And as time passes we all change. You can set your watch to that…

Queens Of The Stone Age - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High

Queens Of The Stone Age - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High

Well, it's only logical the boys are going to cover each other's songs. It might not be the best version yet. But I'm sure soon they will be playing it damn freakin beautifully...
