The Doom Charts Peroration - January 2026

The Doom Charts Peroration

January 2026

“Too much love will kill you
If you can’t make up your mind
Torn between the Doom Charts and the album you leave behind
…”

~ probably mixheard Queen lyrics…

No we did not forget about December… But, as usual, it was hectic month, and there were less extra blurbs written for that December Edition than normal. So, we include the Peroration Blurbs from December in this, now, massive list for January! No less than 32 albums that all deserve your attention. Cause as you know, the albums below are on high rotation at one or more of the Contributors’s homestead. And this is why we do the Doom Charts in the first place, because we love heavy music so much, we can’t stop talking about it…

We often forget to post about the very cool Doom Charts Peroration Post, but since we are so busy with other stuff, this is at least a way to grab your attention again, and let you know that there are 32 albums on that list that desire your attention... And guess what, no less than 11 of those are written by one of the crazies that also occasionally write for Stoner HiVe... So, go read up on Backengrillen, Barbears, Flux Hound, Glórach, Gluecifer, Non, Orango Tango, Spooky Eyes, Sykofant, Triangulo Negro,Waster and all those others! They deserve it!

The following are professions of love and adoration by Doom Charts Contributors for albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, the Doom Charts critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and other sorts of heavy rock and metal albums. The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart which is published on the First Friday of the new month. However, sometimes a love is so great, but for whatever reason the album unfortunately did not make the published Doom Charts Edition or because there were so many contributors in love with that one album, that multiple blurbs were written, and only the one got published… Well, you can peruse that love here…

The Doom Charts For January 2026

DOOM CHARTS

JANUARY 2026

“Affection, it can’t be combined with
perfection something so divine
we could’ve had our own little world
but you chose to run away with the… Doom Charts…”

~ probably misheard lyrics by Slomosa

As we enter another year, where the Doom Charts scours the Heavy Underground in search of all those amazing albums. We cannot help but think about all those albums that have already been featured since 2015. And those that weren’t. Cause on average the Contributors vote for a total of 200 different albums per month. This month 218. Wow… That’s a lot of heavy music. And we shall continue to spread all that music and our love for it… Even though there’s all that Generative AI stuff to work through now as well. And the amount of it is growing. Some of it is pretty decent even. Some only part AI. And some will undoubtly slip through and make it on to the Doom Charts… We don’t understand at all why one would use a plagarism machine to spill out music, when one could just try to come up with something completely their own. I for one am not interested in what a machine can rehash out of the million ideas it has been fed. There are programs out there that can make your music sound perfect. I am not interested in perfect. Perfect is boring. And it’s not what people can actually do. There’s no fun there. I for one am interested in your idea, your take, your riffs and your energy… Your mistakes. It’s what makes it human. There might be nothing new under the sun, but your take of that will forever be your take and thats what matters and what makes it interesting…

Everything worth doing, is worth doing right…

January started with a bang! Big and loud! A stunning array of amazing records released in the first month of the new year... And you can judge it yourself by ransacking the January 2026 edition of the Doom Charts! Forty amazing heavy albums that all shimmer like legendary gold and jewels...

Will be starting the rundown with Swarm's Air...

And of the ones that made it, my votes went out to:

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

DOOM CHARTS

JANUARY 2025

“Two albums diverged from heaviness
And I am lucky I could journey with both
And be a traveler, with no weariness
Or suffer solitariness
I could dive into all of the Doom Charts undergrowth…
“

~ adapted from The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Welcome to the first regular edition of the 2025 Doom Charts! Where we glance back at  January to hear what the first month of the new year brought us. Are you ready for another deluge of heaviness? We hope so! It’s been an amazing first month already, with 238 albums receiving votes this month. And we rarely have seen Numbers 1 and 2 this close together. Which meant we had to do them justice and provide two blurbs for Number 2 as well. And to make things even freakier, they’ve come out on the same label. Go check’m out. But be sure, to check all forty; they are all worthy of your attention! And do not hesitate to let us know which one you are missing! It might just be our new favorite record!

The brand new, first edition of the new year!
It's the First Friday of the new month, which means a new Doom Charts editon is here!

The January 2024 Doom Charts – 40 to 26

The January 2024 Doom Charts – 40 to 26

This is what we normally do on our little Facebook page during the weekend after the new regular edition of the Doom Charts goes online. We count down from 40 to 26, and try to type in a few words about that album or ep that makes sense to us. It’s not a review; but usually a miniscule blurb, a little sentence to entice, to hype. A Stoner Hype… Well, we collected them here to post for you in one nice little post on the blog… And in this way, we will try to spread the good word about them on Instagram as well..

HEAVE BLOOD & DIE – BURNOUT CODES

"How can anyone not immediately fall in love with that opening track Dog Days! Just go play Heave Blood & Die's new Burnout Codes album... Forceful post punk, alternative rock, a bit of kraut energy and psychedelic touches make this eight-track album the kind of album to kickstart the new year and send it into overdrive! Amazing, start to finish!"

HUNDEN – A CALMING PRESS

"A Calming Press gives you this vibrant, gritty stoner metal sound, that touches base with grunge and punk and even noise and makes this Hunden debut a definite bite and bark!"

CHEDDAR – PSYCHE

"Cheddar, Psyche... You would assume they're Brits, but now, this is a Spanish quintet... Proggy, world wide melodic influences, psychedelic, metal and these floating and flying female vocals... Crossing boundaries and ripping out border posts... You can never go wrong with a good piece of Cheddar!"

MOHAMA SAZ – MÁQUINA DE GUERRA

"I love it when I see albums like Máquina de Guerra by Mohama Saz appear on the Doom Charts... The mediterranean, middle eastern psych and folk rock, sits on an entirely different side of the heavy underground, but one that deserves every bit of your attention as well... Kraut influences or trance rock, turns their sound into something very organic almost tribalistic and very dream inducing!"

SCAVENGER MT – FERAL

"Looking for some Feral metal? Look no further! Scavenger MT, brings you all that brutish and burling metal, stoner, sludge, drifting towards classic, heavy or prog sometimes, but always with this wild and savage energy! Indeed Feral!"

RED SUN SERMON – QUEEN OF SWORDS

"Red Sun Sermon is here to provide audience with the Queen Of Swords... Offerings of southern touched blues, by way of doom, metal, hard rock and stoner. Diesel powered and extremely soulful!"

DUST MICE – ROOM WITHIN A ROOM

"The high flying Dust Mice turn their classic sounding rock into a space odyssey one moment and into vintage progressiveness the next... Sometimes very jam oriented flare outs and then turning inwards with more garage rocking, Room Within A Room feels like a Russian doll..."

TEEN MORTGAGE – TEEN MORTGAGE

"Teen Mortgage... Post-punk and punk adorned with some stoner influence, garage, noise and even a tiny hint of surf here and there. It’s so good, you will want to sell your house and buy every Teen Mortgage record available!"

GOZD – UNILATERALIS

"The Heavy Underground in Poland is on fire!! We managed to listen to that cool Unilateralis album by GOZD yesterday as well! Doom, stoner, metal, but also something gritty, gnarly and grimy. Like there's some punk blood underneath it all! Love it!"

GUHTS – REGENERATION

"And GUHTS's Regeneration also made these walls buzz with excitement... So many layers, and so many genres all merging into one beautiful, yet often melancholic or anguished piece of art..."

 HEXEREI – NIHIL I CELANDUM

"Today we continue on with Hexerei and their Nihil i Celandum release... Doomy grunge, grungy doom, seventies inspired rocking, stoner trucking and a lot of proto energy! These seven tracks will surely cast a spell on you!"

MOON WIZARD – SIRENS

"Moon Wizard, straight out of Salt Lake City, deliver that occult and doom touched heavy rock, classic styled and proto loving. You know that good stuff, that stuff that we love from bands like Green Lung. But then with female vocals, funkier drumming and more progressive guitar work… Over the moon over here, listening to their third album Sirens!"

SPECTRAL SORCERY – DUNGEONS OF DOOM

"And yes! It's Monday now... But we still managed to get groovy in the Dungeons of Doom yesterday! The three track Spectral Sorcery debut EP spell out their lust for darkness, and decay, and dungeons and doom... Classic doom for all you haze loving freaks!"

BAGUAL – INHVMAR

"And Bagual was there as well, providing that stoner metal, sludgy goodness. Sure, Inhvmar starts out very doom, but soon turns metal, stonerized and with sludge tones. Even a bit of black comes into play here and there, and then there are those moments when it opens up into more post metal and atmospherics... This is some really good stuff!"

 TANGLED HORNS – LIGHTER

"Tangled Horns's new Lighter album has been on heavy rotation over here and was high on my list of votes... The Belgian quintet excels in delivering emotive grunge, stonerized and melodic, but always gritty and with a tension that constantly seems on the verge of exploding! Out on Polderrecords this is one of the books!"

Tune in next month when we do this Stoner Hype again for the number 40 to 26 of the February Doom Charts... But for now... Go listen to all of the 40 of January if you haven't already!

The Doom Charts for January 2024

 Doom Charts

January 2024

“All right, Doom Charts here! Get your hands above your heads, get on the bar, and get off the wall!”

~ probably misheard quote by Jimmy ‘Popeye’ Doyle

That’s right! The Doom Charts are here. The brand new first edition of 2024! It’s the January Edition and the amount and quality of releases is stunning from the get-go! 220 albums received votes this month and it feels like there was some big scheme going on, some smuggling operation to get the word out on all that good stuff that has some sort of French Connection… Go listen to the forty below and see what we mean… And we’d better not catch you Picking your feet in Poughkeepsie…

It's up! It's out and about... Since yesterday! It's running rampant through the streets of Poughkeepsie!

That all new, very first edition of 2024! The January Doom Charts!

I voted for a handful on the list...

Tangled Horns, Qilin, Horse God, Hazehound, That Ship Has Sailed, Les Moontunes, The Slow and Easy, Greengoat, Buffalo Bud Buster and ofcourse... SLIFT!

And on the Facebook Page; we are running the countdown from Heave Blood & Die on Number 40 all the way to Number 1 and jotting down a few words for 40 to 26...

But I should have voted for all of them! Better check out all forty! They're all there for a reason!

The Doom Charts for January 2023

Doom Charts

“After all, the wool from the black sheep is just as warm.”

~ Sister Margaretta

Before we get to the nitty gritty so to speak, one more heartfelt thank you to all you followers out there. It is humbling to see your reactions and it warms our entire being. That also goes for all the bands. Seeing your response to all those Personal Lists and that final Top 100, well, is once again humbling and overwhelming. We do it all for those amazing albums and getting the good word out about them to all you followers. So, when we see we reach both… Well… Thank you! Thank you!

It’s 2023, and has been for a month. So… Welcome to the first regular, January edition of the Doom Charts of the new year. We’ve got Thirty-Nine spanking new albums listed below and one album that was released in November, made the Doom Charts back then and is now present once again. Should we consider that one the ‘black sheep’ of the list? Or should we consider all of them as black sheeps? Cause this is the Heavy Underground we’re talking about and we shall not hear many of those albums or songs out shopping, standing in an elevator or listening to a big radio station. And even though our warm little niche is growing every day, it will forever be our cozy, dark, heavy and rocking little hole to curl up into and shelter us from the cold, and the harsh realities outside… No less than 292 albums received votes this month… And below you can see which of those made the published list…

The brand new, first, January edition of 2023 of the Doom Charts went up on Friday the 3rd, as planned... Once again, a great selection of heavy rock from the dephts of the underground! Damn fine releases one and all! Voted for by the many Contributors and tallied by the one and only Remi VL!

Personal votes of the ones that made it, went out to: Tidal Wave, WARP, Dread Witch, Godsground , Shivalila, Buddha Sentenza, Signo Rojo, Solar Trip, Giant Sleep, I Am The Mansion, Draken, Strider, Zeup, & Lord Mountain .... Will start spinning them from 40 to 1 today... Stating with that damn fine trio from Dunkirk, France called Mama Youth! How about you?! What are you listening to?

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

The Doom Chart For January 2022

Doom Charts

"If you don’t worry about the future, sooner or later it’s the past. And if they say the thrill is gone, then it’s time to take it back!" ~ Meat Loaf (Michael Lee Aday)

As we begin to embark upon another calendar years’ worth of new album releases, we rest assured that we are INDEED The Keepers Of The Flame! Without question, we indentured denizens of the D.C. universe take our charge most seriously as we endeavor and ever-labor to make you, the mass appreciators of the non-mainstream musical realm, well informed and oft times, saturated in distortion… deluged in down tuning, or afloat upon feedback. Of course, the naysayers (lookin’ at you, Mr. Simmons) and the naive know-nothings will live up to their namesakes and thus, have no clue when it comes to what is good music and what it can do. Simple and to the point, “change lives” makes every other point moot. It’s our way, our path, and it beckons to us, forcing us to ignore the sonic ruts and moronic butts… to rise above and fully embrace that which we love. Label it whatever genre one must and be not misguided, for we be the DOOM CHARTS in which thou may trust.

We are here to inform you, sometimes forewarn you, and we have a collective support and are happy to engage in a Rock ‘N Roll-based rapport (with you all). It is there we know our kind, we have bonds, and possess a camaraderie that is hard to define. Call us shaman or spirit guides, we holy men and women that prophesy as we decry… the best of the newest records out and available for you to buy and remember……..

“EVERYTHING LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE!!!”
(Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker — The Ripple Effect)

Another year, and the list resets! Everyone seems to be ready for a fresh start and we start off 2022 with 30 new albums without a single repeat from last year, out of just over 200 albums voted for! In the last few months, a handful of new faces have joined up, with a few familiar faces stepping away to refocus. There’s already a long list of albums to look forward to, with many strong releases in January alone! Let’s keep our enthusiasm up for a great year in music and live shows, and a healthy and happy year to everyone!
“…And the magic music makes your morning mood”
(Remi VL)

As you know, we were on work/holiday, so Remi VL took over on the Doom Charts to get the January list out to you all in proper fashion and on time! And what a marvelous job he did! Gonna have to go away more often now! Ho ho ho! We sent our list before we left and are glad to see a few of our choices ended up on the January 2022 edition of the Doom Charts! The ones that made it are: Fostermother, Mamvth, Mud Spencer, Cormano, Frozen Planet … 1969, Yo No Se, Earthless, Blue Rumble, Tigers On Opium, Sunczar & Hazemaze … But our personal Number 1: Volcanova and their Cosmic Bullshit album did not! What happened there? Well, there’s always next month! And yes; of course, we shall be listening to the entire January Doom Charts in a row, starting tomorrow…

The Doom Chart For January 2022

donderdag 8 april 2021

Vokonis – Odyssey

Vokonis – Odyssey
The Sign Records – 2021
Metal, Doom, Prog
Rated: *****

We apologized to the readers of the January Doom Charts, for most of the Doom Charts crew were so taken with the album that they all forgot that it would not be released for a few months. And the date is still a month or two away. The date is set for the seventh of May. But when it finally arrives, rest assured, it will blow you’re your mind! We’re talking about the new Odyssey by that Swedish trio Vokonis. And we will keep talking about that album! The Vokonis three have been moving ever forward from their doom metal beginnings to an ever more progressive future. New 6-track album Odyssey by the Swedes is their most accomplished yet; it makes expert use of all the progressive tension arcs available and still retains that incredibly heavy, doom and grunting edge. Rough and wild, yet also very charming and full of shimmering beauty. And extra sweet and tasty cherry on top of it all is Opeth and Kamchatka’s very own Per Wiberg on keys. We all love Per and we all love Vokonis!
