Angel Face – Angel Face

Angel Face – Angel Face
Slovenly Recordings – 2023
Punk, Garage
Rated: ***

Angel Face, the new (since 2021) formation featuring members of The Fadeways and Teengenerate comes straight out of Tokyo, Japan to takes us back to the golden days of punk. Listening to their debut full-sized, ten track, twenty minutes long blast from the past, you would assume that there would not even be a hint of a record deal for these guys, but of course the too cool for school Slovenly Recordings already found out about them and signed them in a methamphetamine heartbeat. On the other hand, its logical somebody immediately picked them up, cause the guys and girl from those two bands toured the globe under those and more monikers like: American Soul Spiders, Raydios, Ruler and Firestarter. Legends in their own right, legends in the underground Tokyo punk scene. Angel Face is primitive and angry, but that anger isn’t necessarily that of the violent type, but more of a jubilant, tequila shot and dance wildly kind of rage. Anthemic and atavistic, this is the antidote to all the lousy music you might have heard during the week. Had to deal with a pop radio channel at work all day? Play Angel Face to get rid of that ugly taste and foul smell. Got stuck in an elevator and had to sit through a jazzy instrumental version of Sinatra’s biggest hits? Put on the album’s second track USA and you will be straight in the head again within two minutes. It’s loud and meant to be played loud, this is that ramshackle garage meant to be blasted at a garbage disposal site down the street or at one of the last semi-secret squat bars of whatever city you might live in. Perhaps not meant for the rural part of the country, as third track Big City, with riveting sing-a-long’s tries to encapsulate. Raw power, often harkening back to early sixties pop melodies, but extrapolated to the point of an explosive meltdown. And you will have one, drinking that dubious Japanese gin and dancing your ass off in front of the speakers. As vocalist Hercules used to do as a fan at their shows before he joined the band. But with the infectious Hercules handcuffed to the microphone, the now foursome are set to smile their pearly punk smile across the globe and wow the audience with their Angel Face…

Doctor Explosion – Superioridad Moral

Doctor Explosion – Superioridad Moral
Slovenly Recordings – 2022
Rock, Garage, Punk, Psych, Surf
Rated: *****

It’s 2022 everywhere in the world, darkness in the form of all sorts of impending doom surrounds us all. But only in Gijón, Spain, we can celebrate the coming of an album that might blow all of that to smithereens. For after no less than eleven years, the boys from Doctor Explosion have found the time to record and release a new album called Superioridad Moral. Their hard as nails, bang on the can, garage rocking punk and punk rocking garage sound is back with a vengeance! Here to show the squares some class, where the fuck it’s all at and how the beat goes on. It’s beat music for the surf poets, mystic psychedelic atmospheres for the rebels and wild call to arms for the guerrillas. Ten powerful new tracks to herald the coming of a new superior moral and to make fun of it all. Sure, it is rebellious, but only to an extent you can enjoy it. And enjoy it you shall! For their eleventh album sounds like their most mature, best produced and most, cough, mainstream record to date. Highly influenced by sixties psych, and the rock from that era, the album starts of properly with great drumwork and smashing riffs on that first track Insatisfacción. The Spanish vocals rev you up and heats your blood to the right temperature. No standing still for sure. It even sounds like there is a stonerrock desert wind whispering through the air. And where second track Vestir De Mujer, slows down considerably, El Día Que David Bowie Murió that follows, ups the tempo back to the original blast off. Giving away, what kind of an eb and flow the four from Doctor Explosion are opting for. They keep this faster paced and slower songs trade-off going till Apego Evitativo, which keeps the energy up and the momentum going full speed. And although eight track Acidez, is slower and Mi Lista De Cosas Que Hacer as well, it really grinds full stop with final track Paleto (They Call Me Country). This Spanish version of Sanford Clark’s The Call Me Country, is truly Paleto, is yokel country, Americana done the Doctor Explosion way. Especially when they hit that raw and rocking twang. Superioridad Moral, superior garage and absolutely enchanting! Can't get enough of it!

The Anomalys – Glitch

The Anomalys – Glitch
Slovenly Records / Shattered Platter PR – 2022
Rock, Punk, Garage, Surf, Thrash, Rockabilly
Rated: *****

And briefly, and only for those lucky few, who had ears enough to recognize it, music was good again. Charged with a dangerous current of electricity the nine tracks on the new Glitch album by the Dutch punk trio The Anomalys will sound near cracking perfect in your favorite shithole dive bar. It sure as hell does on my home stereo… Anyway, the new incarnation of this Amsterdam wrecking crew will see you lust for cheap nostalgia about the punk boom that happened in the late seventies. Here are three crazies that have enough swagger between the three of them that you will surely take notice even at the wildest of firework shows. Combining surf, rockabilly, punk and thrash with their garage rocking mania the nine tracks courtesy of main man and The Anomalys founder Bone have this even wilder streak to them now that the trio is rounded out by Remy Pablo, the amazing drummer of Weird Omen and second guitar looney Looch Vibrato (The Magnetix, Louder Than Death). With Glitch, The Anomalys have reached the pinnacle of their creation and even though they have been surfing the global punk current ever since their foundation, this might hopefully get them to ride that 50-year storm wave! Stunning; wild and dangerous; just check out the video and single Panic below and be convinced…
