The Doom Charts Peroration - April 2026

The Doom Charts Peroration

April 2026

“Take me down to the Festival City
Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty
(Take me home) oh, won’t you, please, take me home?
Take me down to the Doom Charts City
Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty
(Take me home) oh, won’t you, please, take me home?”

~ misheard… Guns ‘n Roses

With festival season upon us once again, the time has come to witness so many of the bands we love come alive on stage! Of course, throughout the year there are concerts, shows in crowded bars, smoky backrooms, dubious drinking holes and dilapidated buildings. But festivals possess a magic all their own, especially the ones that stretch across two or three unforgettable days. For a brief moment, you wander through a better version of the world… A place where strangers smile at one another, where people dance without hesitation, and where freedom seems to hum in the air itself. Music becomes the common language, the heartbeat behind every shared moment and every surge of all that wonderful energy. Next up for me personally, Sonic Whip Festival. Today actually. Where will you go to chase that feeling, to stand before your favorite bands and lose yourself in the sound? Below, are 25 favorite bands chosen by our contributors, the ones they hope to experience live themselves… So, tap into the energy, and feel it for yourself…

The other monthly Doom Charts post went live last Friday! Peroration time! And this time around, no less than 7 of those blurbs were written by one of the crazies that occasionally writes for the HiVe... So, go read up on: Truckfighters, Stump Grinder, Purple Skies, Lungburner, Gnod, Black Lung and Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell... Although some of those were already posted on the HiVe as well! Either way, there are 25 albums to check out! If you haven't already...

The following are words of adoration from Doom Charts Contributors, devotions to albums they could not stop spinning. Each month, our writers gather to celebrate the finest in doom, sludge, metal, stoner, progressive, psychedelic, and other heavy realms. Their selections are woven into the Doom Charts, published on the first Friday of every month. But some affections run too deep for the regular edition. Some albums fall just outside the chart, or inspire so many write-ups, and only one was chosen. Here, those excesses of love remain… Unfiltered, unbound, and still echoing… A few last words which hopefully will inspire you to listen to those albums…

The Doom Charts For April 2026

DOOM CHARTS

APRIL 2026

“Hello, Doom Charts, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
…”

~ probably misheard lyrics by Simon & Garfunkel

Wow, that felt like an extremely short month! And once again chockfull with amazing releases. So many, that the forty below only begin to scratch the surface of the Heavy Underground. No less than 211 albums received votes, but as always, only forty are published. And those forty and all those others you already discovered or will in the near future, are there to offer you some respite and relief in a world full of constant upheaval. Getting lost in these records might allow the listener to release pent-up, excessive emotions, leading to emotional, spiritual, or intellectual relief and a balanced state. Perhaps the entire world should start listening?

Indeed, what a month once again! Look at all the heavy splendor! And from the bands that made it I voted for: A Very Old Ghost Behind The Farm, Birds of Vale, Ampacity, Beneath The Skin, Tusoc, Admiral Sir Cloudesly Shovell, Black Weedow, Myar, Gurthworm, Elefus, American Sharks, Cesar Sun, White Tundra, Phantom Logic, Angine De Poitrine,  Bismut, Glowsun, Spirit Adrift, Purple Skies, Abrams, Bronco Forte, Occult Hand Order and Corrossion of Conformity...

But as always... I could have voted for all who made the list! Gonna be starting the rundown soon with Number 40. The very cool Objective Counsciousness by Deathbird Earth...

Already featured on Stoner HiVe:

Album Premiere - Beneath The Skin - Beneath The Skin

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - White Tundra - Stories From The Dark

White Tundra – Stories From The Dark

Abrams – Loon

Bismut – Matsutake

DOOM CHARTS

APRIL 2025

“It is only with the heart that one can hear rightly; what is essential is invisible to the ear…“

~ probably misread quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Open your hearts and let the good stuff in! It’s Bandcamp Friday! Peruse the list, listen to as much as you can and go purchase your favorite albums! Today is the day! Below you find Forty albums, carefully listened to and voted for by the Contributors. They voted for 220 different albums this month. But these are the ones that made it to the published list. And this month, there were quite a few albums that were Number One on the individual Contritbutors lists that did not even make it to the Forty published below. Some because the Contributors in question had not realized it would not come out till somewhere in May… But why others like Bident – Blink, Fields of Locust – Nowhere Left Now To Call Home, Marble Orchard – Ruminations of Ruin, Neptunian Maximalism – Le Sacre Du Soleil Invaincu, Red Moon Architect – October Decay and SUMAC and Moor Mother – The Film were loved so hard but by so few, we will never know. Perhaps the other Contributors did not hear it yet? Chalk it up to too many great releases? So many… Well, below are forty of those many… To fill your hearts…

Together with them blue skies outside... The April 2025 edition of the Doom Charts has arrived!  Perfect timing for Bandcamp Friday!   A wonderful edition of forty amazing albums once again... And sneakily six more mentioned in that little intro text... And all 46 albums are worth every heartbeat you might offer...

Votes of mine that made the chart:

The April 2024 Doom Charts – 40 to 26

The April 2024 Doom Charts – 40 to 26

Stoner Hype

Here we are again, collecting what we did on our little Facebook page right after the new regular edition of the Doom Charts goes online. We count down from 40 to 26 and try to type in a few words about that album or ep that makes sense to us. It’s not a review; but usually a miniscule blurb, a little sentence to entice, to hype. A Stoner Hype… Well, we collected them here to post for you in one nice little post on the blog… Because we like to keep things nice and tidy and it helps us spread the good word about them on Instagram as well…

TYPHUZZ – TYPHUZZ

“Typhuzz hails from Karlsruhe in Germany and on their self-titled ten track album they bring you all the proto and retro goodness... Psychedelic, doomy and Sabbath by default!”

NO MAN’S VALLEY – CHRONONAUT COCKTAILBAR / FLIGHT OF THE SLOTHS

“Dutch fivepiece No Man's Valley have two sides of an awesome vinyl coin... One side filled with short, quirky and rock noir atmospheric songs. While the other side is filled with one long psychedelic, ever flowing, ever floating adventure... And all of it is brilliant! It's called: Chrononaut Cocktailbar / Flight of the Sloths and you can hear it on their bandcamp site or order it from Tonzonen Records.”

IVY GARDENS – GOON

“There are moments when I am entirely conflicted about the Ivy Gardens release Goon... And then there are moments when it's cut and clear... this rocks! Well, judge for yourself and be sure to keep going... Cause end track Provider will seal the deal!”

DATCHA MANDALA – KODA

“Been working on some words for the Dätcha Mandala album KODA. It's out on Discos Macarras and it was high on my list of votes for the April Doom Charts and been spinning it a lot.. Go check it out and come back soon to read what it did to me... Maybe it did the same to you?”

BLACK TUSK – THE WAY FORWARD

“Savannah sludge, punk, hardcore, metal and a whole lot of ruckus! It's the new Black Tusk album The Way Forward... Out on Season of Mist... Straight out of the swamps, as fast as a bullet and just as deadly!”

SPACEDRIFTER – WHEN THE COLORS FADE

“You ready for some QOTSA goosebumps and Palm Desert jitters? Grungy, stonerrock and nineties alternative all delivered in such a way that it will surely send shivers down everyones rock spine... Check out the debut full-sized album by Swedish foursome Spacedrifter called When The Colors Fade...”

DOUBLE HORSE – DIABLERIE

“Drink in Double Horse's Diablerie and you'll be doing a diabolical dance upon the grave of whichever demon decided to decapitate you... A grimy proto sound straight out of filthy dungeon, rumbling and rumbling, and grumbling and roaring, like the demon that died drinking your blood... And it's out on Glory or Death Records...”

TRIPPELGÄNGER – POSSESSOR

“More proto, more of that ancient lust for blood, but now intoned with doom and stoner metal. It's the Denmark three known as Trippelgänger... Check out their Possessor album and you will obey your master!”

DOOL – THE SHAPE OF FLUIDITY

“We managed to jot down some words about DOOL's new album The Shape Of Fluidity, out on Prophecy, a few weeks ago, which you can read HERE! Or you can press play and listen to their wonderful The Shape Of Fluidity below."

FREEWAYS – DARK SKY SANCTUARY

“Late to the Freeways party, but never too late, thanks to my brethren of the Doom Charts! Dark Sky Sanctuary is that shimmering gold of classic hard rock, mixed with NWOBHW and all those tunes that will bring you forever forward towards the horizon on those endless open roads... The perfect soundtrack for a roadtrip! Out on Dying Victims Productions since April 26...”

TET – TET

“It's been heavy rotation over here ever since Doktor420 lead me to their release... We're talking about the Polish four named Tet! Their concoction of stonerrock, psychedelic, seventies inspired and doom infused heavy rock tastes exactly like my favorite potion... Sprinkled with some krautrock and a wild atmosphere, this is the kind of blend that will lead you into a savage and adventurous night!”

BONGRIPPER – EMPTY

“BONGRIPPER... It's out on The Great Barrier. But the bandname is enough right? Do we need to say more? Do we have to state the obvious? That there instrumental doom metal, both sludgy, noisy and droney will blow you away and show you images of barren wastelands and collapsed societies... Cause you know.. Nothing Remains Forever... Empty...”

BOTTENHAVET – LJUD I TYSTA RUM

“We've had Bottenhavet on repeat yesterday, for the rest of the day, for their Ljud i Tysta Rum album is so addictive! Out on Fuzzorama Records the Swedish (now) four delivered a debut that is absolutely stunning. They're the band to watch. To hear and to rock out to. Stonerrock, but with grandiose arcs. Grunge, but highly melodic. Fuzz, but highly dynamic. A bit of seventies, a bit of prog and a whole lot of love for the good stuff! This is the Heavy Underground album that will slowly but surely take control of your heart and soul! It is that good! And should have been in the Top 10 of the Doom Charts! Or even higher...”

STONERHEAD – RUNNING HIGH

“So, today we continue on with Stonerhead! Classic stonerrock, Running High promises and delivers! Sometimes with a more metalized or grunge approach, psychedelic touches and seventies flourishes, but always delivering it all honest and with a glance back at them blues roots... Wonderful! It will have your Running (High) for the nearest record store! (Or alternatively you can order it on their bandcamp site...)”

WHORES. – WAR.

“And then the biggest surprise of the April Doom Charts... No, not that we find Whores. with their sublime album War. on it... But that we come to realize that their stunning Gold. album is already eight years old! WHAT?! And War. brings that seemingly chaotic, torrent of riffs, deluge of noise back in great sludge and colossal rock! Metal by default and completely appealing to all the senses, even if it slices through you like a razorblade... This is the only War. that is good for you...”

Tune in next month when we do this Stoner Hype again for the number 40 to 26 of the May Doom Charts... Live during the weekend on our little Facebook Page or afterwards when we collect them here... But for now... Go listen to all of the 40 of April if you haven't already!

The Doom Charts For April 2024

Doom Charts

April 2024

“I heard they have some tasty DOOM CHARTS burgers…”

~ Jules (probably misheard quote from Pulp Fiction)

As we cruise into the month of May and feel the approaching summer, the sweet fragrance of outdoor festivals, we present to you the April Doom Charts. Those albums that were spun the most and loved the hardest. As usual, there are many more. And you might have found a different favorite album during the month of April. Do not hesitate to share those finds with us! Cause it might be our next favorite one as well. But below you will find the list of 40 albums that were voted for by the many Doom Charts Contributors. There are 197 albums on the total list and we haven’t seen a finish in points this close for the Numbers 1 and 2 for quite some time, I reckon. But all forty are as tasty as hell… Shit, all of them are like the cornerstone of any nutritious Heavy Underground breakfast…

There is stomps!  That beastly list of amazing albums rampaging through the Heavy Underground... The April 2024 edition of the Doom Charts!

Of the 40 on the list I voted for: No Man's Valley, Dätcha Mandala, DOOL, Tet, Yeast Machine, Guenna, Cannabus, King of None, Iron Blanket, Robot God & The Lunar Effect !

But as usual, we're running down all forty over on Stoner HiVe, starting with Number 40 Typhuzz and we could have easily voted for that one as well... As most of the others! Amazing month once again!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

The Doom Charts for April 2023

 Doom Charts

“Once you start down the Doom Charts path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you, it will.” ~ Yoda

April has been heavy! Heavy on all fronts! Music wise the amount of stoner and doom masterpieces has once again been staggering. And on a personal note, I’ve been swamped with work, which meant there was little time to do stuff for the Doom Charts or Stoner HiVe. In part due to a little holiday to Scotland that will start after Sonic Whip Festival. Which is a different kind of heavy… not being able to spend as much time with this heavy rock thing we love. Cause it is and remains for all of us, a labor of love. Or perhaps obsession or addiction. Cause I forsee withdrawel symptoms hiking around Scotland. But don’t worry, I will be taking the forty below and all the others I love with me; so when the need arises I can inject some heavy rock into my veins! Cause below you will find once again, 39 brand new and amazing heavy rock albums that will cater to your progressive, stonerrock, psychedelic rock or metal and doom needs! 275 albums received votes this month and the Top 5 ran away with a lot of them… But perhaps you already saw it coming, cause you’ve been as hooked as the rest of us…

The April Doom Charts went live two days ago... But after posting it we jumped in a car and headed for the Sonic Whip Festival in Nijmegen! Which was amazing once again! Saw awesome shows and met up with some cool dudes!

Of the forty that made it, personal votes went out to: Dozer, Margarita Witch Cult, Ruff Majik, Wolfnaut, Faerie Ring, Milana , Void King, Giöbia, King Potenaz, The Golden Grass, Karma Vulture, The Crooked Whispers, :Nepaal, Psychedelic Source Records, 𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐇, Familiars, This Summit Fever ...

Doom Charts

“The bigger, the better… In Everything”

Freddy Mercury

Festival season is upon us! Finally! Oh, how we missed all those live shows… Which means many of the Contributors are out of bounce and bouncing hard to all those heavy tunes everywhere! Don’t worry, they all delivered their votes; but perhaps the blurbs are written by a lot of the same cats this month. It happens… But it happens exactly on the month that the Doom Charts crazies did something crazy once again… Indeed, we’ve extended the list to 40. There are multiple reasons to do so. But… We weren’t sure if we should. I mean, we could just post the total list of 299 albums that received votes this month. But then, that would defeat the purpose of the chart, we reckon. No, the main reason is the fact that the amount of albums released on a monthly basis, continues to grow and the sheer brilliance of many of those albums continue to shock and awe. Not so long ago albums could easily carry over a month. Or even two… You know, Lore by ELDER made the list three months in a row. This does not happen anymore, NOT because the albums aren’t that good, but because there are more and more albums THAT good. The amount of voters might also have something to do with that or perhaps that some promos are sometimes a bit too much ahead of the actual release date… Anyway… We’ve extended the list by ten… Should we keep it that way? Or go back to thirty? Let us know… O’ and let us know which albums you dug the most! Cause it might just be our next favorite album as well! Check’m out! Check’m all out!

Oh no! The fuzz might fracture your nose! It's the all new April Doom Charts! This time around; with 40 amazing albums listed!

But we sure as hell could have voted for each and everyone of those magnificent albums on this list! Check'm out! Check'm all out!

Hot Breath – Rubbery Lips

Hot Breath – Rubbery Lips
The Sign Records – 2021
Rock
Rated: ****

It was one of the three releases featured on the April Doom Charts that we had not yet heard. And when we read Eric ‘The General’ Varasifsky ‘s blurb about the new Hot Breath album, we knew we had to quickly remedy that! And after that initial track Right Time we knew that Rubbery Lips, as the album is called, would be the perfect cure for our sickness that is us missing Juliette And The Licks so incredibly hard. Cause Rubbery Lips have produced this amazing smash ‘n grab rock ‘n roller that takes you back to the seventies just as easily as to that ballsy hardrock from the eighties. It’s got proto metal vibes, fast paced garage sensations and every possible hard rocking element that you might need to get your groove on and send you all-nite jukin’! The music stands so incredibly tall, so huge, so enormous, that it will undoubtedly make you go crazy, but it’s the hellcat vocals that will make you go wild! It has a certain vibrating presence. And it will touch you with the kind of madness that drives a shark insane in a blood-stained sea…

Dunerider – Ruins

Dunerider – Ruins
Self released - 2021
Doom, Sludge, Stoner
Rated: *****

It was one of the first releases we jotted down when the time came to send our list for the April edition of the Doom Charts. We had been grooving so freaking hard the past weeks to this rough and brutal little diamond! And we jumped at the opportunity to write that little blurb for this months edition; but did wonder what to write… Should we talk about the entire seven-track album that is Ruins by French outfit Dunerider? And in the process perhaps ruin some of the mammoth surprise that it might be? Or should we just mention that massive opening track Warlords? And promise that the rest of the album is just as good… For Warlords will not just shatter and crush your immediate surroundings, it aims to destroy your very being, the universe and the fabric of time. Indeed. It is that heavy! Pure doom sludge and ominous stoner… A sound that crept out of the bog to wreak havoc, rampage and lay waste to all that might stand in its way…

Birmani – Birmani

Birmani – Birmani
Cuchabata Records – 2021
Stoner, Fuzz, Sludge, Psych
Rated: *****

These three Canadian crazies made the Doom Charts of April, and we were so glad they did. Cause we had already listened to the album and enjoyed the hell out of it. But seeing it appear on the final list and knowing that many of the Doom Charts Contributors voted for it, made me dive deeper into it. Making me fall head over heals with this album! It definitely left a mark! From Montréal, Quebec comes three-piece Birmani. On their self-titled, full-sized debut they show off their French tongue and their love for massive fuzz with loads of psychedelic influences and sludge overtones. They manage to make it all feel like old faves and new raves, from atavistic grunge to intense stoner; just as the godfathers intended. And it’s that masterful psych edge they add to most of the composition that will definitely turn you on. It’s that psych edge that also made us all fall in love with All Them Witches. And that will happen with Birmani as well. Birmani is good, Birmani is great, Birmani is the latin name for a sort of snail. And just like that slimy sucker, this three piece will definitely leave a mark…

The Doom Chart for April 2021

Doom Charts

“As from the smoke is freed the blaze,
So let our faith burn bright!
And if they crush our golden ways,
Who e’er can crush Thy light?”

~ The First Walpurgis-Night, Goethe

We end the month of April with a folklorically traditionally time, an ancient holiday of sorts. That which is known as The Witches Sabbath or Beltane, where Midsommer and Walpurghis Nacht is celebrated in some parts of the world and has been for millennia. In ancient times these celebrations heralded the season of light and bonfire celebrations and displayed hope for renewal and rebirth as we head into May with longer days and summer approaching. And how fitting, as no summer in recent memory holds greater anticipation or need for that light or hope and renewal for us music fans, artists, and industry folk as the one ahead, while we await with bated breath a possible return to normalcy for live music and events, creative livelihoods and entire cultural sectors.

Will summer bear live musical fruit for us? What day is it anymore? Does time even matter? It remains to be seen, but the hope that comes with longer days and more vitamin D is a damn good start as well as April having brought with it a bounty of stunning releases for us all to enjoy. And without futher ado, as your faithful contributors of the Doom Charts are wont once again as every month dear reader, we coalesce to provide you with a listing of the finest new releases the world over from within our stylistic proclivities for Doom, stoner, sludge, heavy psych and fuzz centric musical offerings. Be safe and keep the faith, the light of our underground community shines bright.

That lovely intro was provided by the newest member of the Doom Charts Contributors group, long time Doomed & Stoned contributor: Doom Oracle. And let us indeed hope that this summer will bring forth the air we all desperately need to breathe and to be that air filled with lovely heavy musical notes that float along the warm breeze. Making the ember inside glow once more and make us not just remember, but experience and enjoy… Thousandfold! This positive, do good and we will surely make it happen! For now, we have the April edition of the Doom Charts which once again brings us so much great and heavy music to listen to! Personal votes went out to: LáGoon, Motorpsycho, Greenleaf, 1968, Yawning Sons, The Vintage Caravan, Draken, Dunerider & Dust Mice ! And today, we will listen to those, the ones we could just as easily have voted for and those few we hadn’t even heard… Like Iron Rider, Hot Breath & The Watcher… And knowing the fellow contributors, we will dig the hell out of ‘m and probably vote for them next month! Check ‘m out! Check ‘m all out!

The Doom Chart for April 2020

Doom Charts

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

The Doom Charts is all about consensus from a wide variety of individuals, each with their own personal tastes and proclivities. Whichever genre suits your tastes, we aim to bring you our opinions about what is hot right now. But they are only our opinions. Music is the great unexplored country and the beauty of all new discoveries is in the exploration. We each find our own paths: sometimes they converge finding kinship and accord, most times they are about self-exploration: both are equal and valid.

That sharp little intro this month is courteousy of our very own Reek of STOOM. Sharp, to the point and exactly right. Cause there is so much more out there and we continue to amaze each other with what we find and what we think is the best album out there that month. Rarely do we all agree; but since we started publishing the amount of points they got by voting you can see for yourself. Elephant Tree’s new album Habits really did something special for most of the Doom Chart Contributors. But you should really check out all of the 30 published albums, cause you will probably dig most of them and one of them might just be the new soundtrack to your life!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…
