G’morn! We used to do this little tom-tom write up at the bottom of the weekly list. And we shall try to start that up again. A sort of glance back on the week that has passed. So, as we are still recovering from the Phe album release party from Saturday, that was a good party! We’ll try to keep it short and sweet… September had a gazillion great releases; and October is shaping up to be the same. And we hope to write a few words about a handful of them. Last week we mentioned those two Umbra albums, by Gévaudan and Kadabra. We wrote something about Spider Kitten, The Silver Linings and Morag Tong. And we were extremely happy to see Reek of STOOM write something cool about Tumanduumband and Kyle SB about 10% Reptile. If you haven’t had the chance yet, scroll down or visit the blog to read up on those. Later on today, we’ll have another one by Kyle SB going live! But for now, we’re gonna try and get a bit of sunlight and see if we can get that head straight after that wild Phe party!

The Doom Chart for May 2021

Doom Charts

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” ~ Anaïs Nin

Here comes May. The wind is still fresh but the sun rises high in the sky. The golden rays nurture the soils and nature awakens. It’s time to install the summer tire set and do the oil change on our rides. I’m sure you’ve never been so happy to be back at mowing your lawn or preparing your yard or doing whatever you need to do outside in order to be ready for June knocking at our doors. It almost feels like if we are out from a long cryogenic sleep. The long pandemic winter is over. The widespread access to immunization is making the return to normalcy a more and more tangible thing. Fuck yes, we’ll soon gather in a feast of friends! The hope flows in our veins!

May is the month the most associated with fertility and I can insure you our Stoner/Doom scene has been very fecund. It’s like all these pregnant bands decided to give birth at once. Fuck guys, the nursery is full! My guess is they all wanted to be ready to take back the road. I know they are eager to show us in person their new babies but for now, let’s enjoy these digital pictures that have been brought to us along this past month. ~ Marc-Eric Gagnon

And there they were once again! Live on June 1st! The all new and all heavy Doom Charts! An amazing month once more... Personal votes went out to Surfsquatch, Book of Wyrms, A Better Tomorrow, Atomic Vulture, Savanah, Monster Magnet, Khirki, Robots of the Ancient World, Dr. Colossus, Alastor, Vokonis & Hippie Death Cult... Don't think I ever had that many choices make the final list? And of course that Number 1… Circle of Days… We mentioned it around the start of May; what an album…

Gonna be listening to them all again; starting with Melissa's Devil's Mask album... Check'm out! Check'm all out!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

Robots Of The Ancient World - Mystic Goddess

Robots Of The Ancient World – Mystic Goddess
SmallStone Records – 2021
Rock, Hard, Stoner
Rated: *****

The intro starts with a rock noir sound that reminds of The Gun Club and Madrugada before shifting gear and turning into some blissful seventies inspired rock, heavenly fuzzed, bass heavy and with those twin guitars weaving, dancing and riffing. It’s the new Mystic Goddess record by Portland quintet Robots Of The Ancient World. Recorded in the notorious Seattle Soundhouse Studios with the aid of the grunge godfather Jack Endino himself, as well as his longtime protégé Mikel Perkins, the eight tracks all have their very own identity. As we mentioned, that opening title-track has those two faces that blend wonderfully into each other. Follow-up Wasteland keeps its cards close to its chest; slow burning its soul into your heart with those passionate vocals and intensely pronounced guitars. The album turns atavistic stoner, in the very Kyuss sense of the word with that third chugging track Agua Caliente. Powerful riffs, devastating the landscape, pulverizing the dunes. Sure, there’s that widened middle part to contend with, which can be seen as the moments you stand there on top of those dunes, enjoying the view of the desert landscape. Out Of The Gallows contains in that vein and will have you howling along with the refrain without any doubt or hesitation. Colossal in every sense of the word! Which you can state about the entire record in fact, a record that shows off the many faces of Robots Of The Ancient World. And we haven’t even mentioned that cathedral, almost eleven minutes long, track called Lucifyre; which ends with quotes from a David Icke interview, if we’re not mistaken… There is no possible universe in which you will not dig this record. There is simply no way. Who do you think you are?
