High Priestess – Casting The Circle

High Priestess – Casting The Circle

Mike O’Sullivan went all poetic again on his bandcamp blurb for the High Priestess release Casting The Circle. “A pentagrammic ritual, encircled and cast. Five psychedelic pedestals of purple and ash. Each one the upholder of a doom-totem², squared. As three stars smoulder and bloom omens there.” And we love it! The blurb and the album! Cause the three High Priestess ladies from LA bring us some easy going, ear pleasing, highly atmospheric occult doom. The seventies approach of the three give us five languid tracks to go all shamanist and crazy on. The polyphonic vocals add hugely to the spiritual tapestry that comes across as in league with the natural world and not the evil spirits. They give their instruments and compositions so much room and air it feels like you are standing on top of Sagarmatha or Erebus volcano watching all of creation speed buy while the it slows down inside of you. It’s heavy, but always in a transcending way and not in an aggressive way. It will spin you out of time and make you forget all about that world that is speeding by outside of you. And yes, it might turn you into a poet!

We’ll keep posting the Top 10 of last week. Because once again we listened to a lot of different albums, but had limited time to really dive into them. We also listened to some more podcasts than usual. Like the Doomed & Stoned, Hour Of The Riff & Deathrattle Podcast. And thanks to Reek of STOOM we even had our own Hums Of The HiVe. Check out his recent ones HERE! But anyway, the 10 bands listed above released something good and it will definitely continue to get a lot of spins! So check’m out! Check’m all out!

The Doom Chart for July 2017

Doom Chart

“How many more nights and weird mornings can this terrible shit go on? How long can the body and the brain tolerate this doom-struck craziness? This grinding of teeth, this pouring of sweat, this pounding of blood in the temples… small blue veins gone amok in front of the ears, sixty and seventy hours with no sleep. Turn up the radio. Turn up the tape machine. Look into the sunset up ahead. Roll the windows down for a better taste of the cool desert wind. Ah yes. This is what it’s all about. Total control now. Tooling along the main drag on a Saturday night in Las Vegas, two good old boys in a fireapple-red convertible … stoned, ripped, twisted … Good People…”

~ Hunter S. Thompson, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

The festivals are raging everywhere. High Summer Fest is exploding as we speak in Portland and Pyscho Las Vegas is coming up fast, for some reason, not being able to go, made me re-read that classic story by Thompson. He has been my spirit guide for ages. Which is dangerous and will ultimately lead you down a rabbithole that might get you killed or at least maimed. I have survived many brushes with death and I’m pretty sure my luck is running out. But can we tone it down? Can we suddenly change enough to turn ‘normal’? Fuck normal, The Good Doctor would say, let’s all Howard Roark the shit out of life. Do it on your own terms. And stay heavy on all fronts…

The many many bands that churn out those amazing albums that enter the Doom Charts monthly are surely doing it on their own terms. It is what sets them apart and what will make the fans take notice. No less than ELEVEN new albums entered the charts this month. And High Priestess for instance barely missed this edition. A heavy and high July edition of the Doom Charts. All those amazing albums will surely set your soul on fire and will burn your heart, and will make you act crazy in a righteous way! Good people, cause that what we heavy rock fans are! Good people!
