The Swell Fellas - The Drain

The Swell Fellas – The Drain

We loved their Novaturia album. (Review HERE) And we are entirely giddy for their new Residuum Unknown record to arrive on July 19th. But as Desert Bloom PR told us, there is a new single and video out for that album. That’s right The Drain is the wild new The Swell Fellas single and video coming at you from every angle conceivable. A brilliant video by Arturo Baston (Bass-tone) and The Swell Fellas in exceptional form! Seven and a half minutes of jam and progressive heaviness that feels as fierce as it does free! Check out The Drain and get sucked in by its wildness!

Doomed for Ukraine

Doomed for Ukraine

As the war rages on in Eastern Europe, as Ukraine gets decimated and destroyed, the world keeps turning. A bit slower and with a mad eye on the ones that started the war, but still. It’s not like the war has awoken the rest of the world or has spurred any of them into action. Action once again comes from the ones suffering and from the ones that can not stand silent while those suffer needlessly. War never changes and I fear, mankind will never change…

But still, for those heavy rock loving fiends, the ones that doom in safety across the globe; a small token of aid can be provided by buying the STOP WAR IN UKRAINE compilation on Bandcamp if you are an avid heavy music listener or you can provide an extra track for that compilation if you are an artist. So far, 169 bands and artists have already provided a track for the STOP WAR IN UKRAINE compilation. A compilation started by Eugene Voron from Path Of Doom Radio

Eugene says: “In my country, there is a strong and well-known doom metal scene. Bands like Stoned Jesus, 1914, and more recently Noyde and Mental Torment have made great contributions to the genre. I’ve always been a huge fan of music. My journey began with Black Sabbath and Dio. More recently, I began listening to online radio, but I wasn’t satisfied with the selection and felt I could do something to highlight the music and bands I loved.” In 2017, Eugene founded Path of Doom Radio, which broadcast daily from evening till midnight.  The station and accompanying website shines a spotlight on eclectic, international doom and stoner metal. It also promotes the Ukrainian scene as well as female fronted doom bands - the latter with an annual vote, which attracted hundreds of contributor groups and thousands of voters. However, in early 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, and Path of Doom fell temporarily silent. Unable to broadcast to the world, Eugene instead called upon the scene to help young children suffering from war with humanitarian aid via bandcamp sales. Over 100 international bands heard the call - including Panheist, Iron Void, and Paralyzed, and more add their names each week.

“Bright, interesting representatives of the scene from all over the world have joined this compilation and I’m grateful to all of them,” says Eugene. “I urge any fans of Doom and stoner to come listen, pay what you can, and help my people and its families get through this terrible conflict.”

Bands from all over the world have provided a track and from all the heavy genres you can think off. I will not list all 169, but when you see certain names you already know that for every penny you might pay you will not just aid the suffering, you will get incredible music in return: Just look at these: Everest Queen, Professor Electric, Vandhali, Praÿ, Subsun, Black Capricorn, Obiat, Les Nadie, The Swell Fellas, Yo No Se, King Potenaz, Iron & Stone, Carson, Indica Blues, Swörn, Samavayo, Brut Oss, Paralyzed, Hippie Death Cult and The Dry Mouths.

The Swell Fellas – Novaturia

The Swell Fellas – Novaturia
Self released – 2022
Rock, Psych, Prog, Stoner
Rated: *****

I think I mentioned it before, but that prog rock touch that has been so prevalent of late, on many of the great releases, keeps getting my utmost attention. It tickles every fibre of my being and uplifts my spirt, heart and mind. I wonder if others experience that same sort of feeling, or if it’s just my warped brain. Especially the records that move towards the grandiose prog, the heavy atmospheric or the wild psychedelic avenues immediately charm their way into my soul, and guess what, the three hip cats from The Swell Fellas walk their silly walk exactly in the middle of those streets on their newest release Novaturia. Clocking only thirty-three minutes, the five tracks slowly build into this oscillating, swirling maelstrom of heavy rock. All the while painting those extremely wild and colorful vistas, the ones that will make you dream and never want to wake up from. Which probably makes it a good thing the album only lasts for thirty-three minutes. The three sound like this (s)well-oiled machine, knowing its every cog, its every gear and how they fit perfectly together. And with two of the three being brothers, it seems like a logical conclusion, but going back to their first release The Big Grand Entrance from 2020 you can hear they were still searching for that unnamable thing they did find on the new Novaturia record. The transition for instance from Wet Cement into that …Another Realm track, and how it seems to translate being overwhelmed by something in those first moments, slowly but surely accepting its ultimate beauty. And being a closing track, it also feels like a definitive conclusion, to ensure us that The Swell Fellas have found their sound, that they dare to maneuver within those set boundaries, just listen for example to all those different vocalizations in that final track, and that they will continue to push those boundaries ever wider, ever wilder and with ever more exotic touches. And to continue to search for something they cannot name…

The Doom Charts for June 2022

The Doom Charts for June 2022

“I play guitar because I like to make loud noises. And the guitar is the coolest way to make a loud noise.”

~ Kim Thayil

We’ll add to that thought bass, drums, vocals, keys, gongs, etc. Heavy music often requires volume cranked to 11, and we live in an age where we’re spoiled for bands ready to blow out our speakers. Beyond the waves of fuzz, gnarly low end, and brain-bashing bass drums, there’s even more modes of heavy to explore, from atmospheric crush to heavy as simply a mood. Below are 40 of this month’s top purveyors of loud noises and weighted spirit, with far more that can’t be fit into just one post. Dig in and check out the new monthly playlist! And while you’re at it, please give a warm, long overdue welcome to Rich Piva and Silvi Pearl whose impeccable taste now blesses the DC crew!

Did you see the Doom Charts of June 2022? Hope so, cause it went up some five days ago! And what a wild edition once again. This edition was published by our very own Kyle SB / Shasta Beast. Thank you for stepping in and hitting it out of the park! But of course we need to say thank you to all those Contributors, the two new ones Silvi Pearl and Rich Piva; but also all the long standing members! Cause without their votes, their energy and their love for the heavy stuff we could not publish this little thing every month again… Much love to one and all!

Gonna be listening to all them albums in the next week in a row… Cause before we left for that little one week holiday we were sure to send our own list of favorite albums of the past month and we were happy to see many of those choices making it: Mexicoma, The Swell Fellas, Crobot, Museum Of Light, Indus Valley Kings, Phiasco, Mystery Dudes, Oreyeon, Sasquatch, Valley Of The Sun, Red Sun Atacama, AAWKS & Sergeant Thunderhoof…

But we’ve already noticed quite a few that we haven’t even had the chance to hear yet! So, next up is Demise by Solemn Ceremony! And then, all the other June Doom Charts entries… It’s gonna get loud and heavy over here!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…
