All Them Witches - Red Rocking Chair

All Them Witches - Red Rocking Chair

Saw All Them Witches together with Elder rip 013, Tilburg a new one back in October. And towards then end of their set, All Them Witches played Red Rocking Chair. And their rendition of this early 1900’s traditional is wild, takes the band back a bit towards their bluesy beginnings, imploring an even doomier atmospheren and looks forward to the All Them Witches tension wire being stretched until it can stretch no more… And now, there’s an official single version and visualizer… A precursor to the album soon to be released on the BMG imprint.

PR Wire

Today, All Them Witches - Ben McLeod (guitarist), Charles Michael Parks, Jr. (bass/vocals), Christian Powers (drums), and Allan Van Cleave (keys)-  share their new song “Red Rocking Chair”, the first single the band will be releasing with BMG. The song marks the first new music with the band’s new lineup, and sees All Them Witches refashion a bluegrass standard into a haunting and hypnotic transmission, the perfect intro to their new chapter.

“I’ve actually been listening to ‘Red Rocking Chair’ since I was a kid,” says Parks. “Usually, it’s done in a traditional bluegrass style. Ben had the riff, and it made me start singing those lyrics. We used to play bluegrass at after-show parties, in stairwells, and on the streets sometimes. So, ‘Red Rocking Chair’ ties into our old time-y rough touring days.”

“Hopefully, it retains some of our core stoner doom fans,” adds Ben, “I wrote the riff and the wiggly verse part with the intention that Parks would actually sing those ‘Red Rocking Chair’ lyrics over them. He didn’t know it at first, but he wasn’t going to be allowed to say, ‘No’ [Laughs]. Live, we play our song ‘Swallowed By The Sea’ every now and then, and Parks would sub out the “Red Rocking Chair” lyrics at shows. Fans had always asked about it, and I thought it should finally be its own song.”

Ambra – Remnant

Ambra – Remnant
Self-released – 2025
Metal, Stoner, Rock, Prog, Alternative
Rated: ****

The few that follow the HiVe might know that I love Slovenia and Ljubljana and that I always keep my ear to the ground for bands from that region. And yes, the great Jan Kozel from the amazing Jegulja and earlier magical Carnaval is detrimental to that love, me discovering those bands and him using up every drummer available in Ljubljana for his projects. Down the street from him lives Robi Rep from alternative metal band Ambra and so far he has resisted the nightly howls from Kozel to join one of his projects. And we are glad he did, cause the new Ambra album Remnant is a stunning piece of heavy rock! Metal, alternative, progressive with stoner touches. “Influenced by Mastodon, Tool, Deftones, Gojira, Clutch and Chelsea Wolfe…” And those influences are definitely audible in some way or other… But rest assured, they make it completely their own!

Formed in 2015, they released their first full-sized album Cor in 2019. A great debut, but for the new Remnant, they’ve enlisted mixing help from Ben McLeod from All Them Witches, who also adds a wonderful guitar solo on the third track Void. And then there’s that trumpet on fourth track Timeless, that drifts along like ghost notes across a long lost battlefield… Those trenches situated in a once quiet street somewhere in Ljubljana, where, for the past ten years, five musicians gathered like craftsmen in a workshop, shaping something heavy, intricate and wickedly beautiful…

And then they burst forth out of that workshop as the Ambra five they are now. No longer the instrumental project that began its journey, the songs have matured, became more daring and one can safely state that the sketches they started with have become beautiful sculptures, destined to stand the test of time. They’ve chiseled their sound into an ageless form and much of it feels hard to explain. As if you are trying to describe this wonderful dream the morning after…

But as we try to remember all the weight, the kaleidoscopic colors, the shifting shapes, we immediately get lost again in the wonderful world they created. Their music veers between prog, alternative, stoner textures, and wisps of psychedelia. Take Arcadia 404, slowly awakening, before bursting open completely. Vocals trembling with emotion, guitars heaving forward in thick waves and a rhythm section that pounds like a heartbeat that’s almost unable to control itself. It sounds tense and coiled, almost moving forward on the silences between the notes more than the rhythm itself. And this is something they continue to do throughout the album.

Shaping songs like an M C Escher drawing, tilting and twisting the structures, and always with absolute precision. And at the center of this ever shifting landscape, stands vocalist Jakob Rejec, whose voice cuts through the density like a blade of glass, a scalpel, opening up the composition and showing its spine. Remnant lasts for an hour, and every minute begs to be heard over and over. And you will keep discovering more and more. Ambra have definitely out done themselves, they have forged something powerful and unpredictable. Something where you can lose every part of yourself in… Over and over, until there's nothing left...

Number 10

Number 10

Entering the Top 10 today… And this means another big jump from Witchskull on Number 11 to reach Number 10; a jump with over a hundred points in fact. Well, there aren’t that many bands that can truly deliver this kind of feeling and atmosphere with a potent mixture of mercury stoner riffs, grinded blues patterns and pressed psychedelic ambience. There is a presence lurking hear that feels weird and will ride your body like a wave of goosebumps. Changing up their magical concoction with every record, the (now) trio delivers something stunningly sinister and majestically gothic. Nothing seems to be standing in their way of imploring gritty metal riffs and chugging rhythms to create their ideal and seemingly perfect universe… Creepy by default and completely enthralling! Furious, epic and cinematic! Indeed, here is Number 10!

Changing up their magical concoction with every record, the All Them Witches trio delivers something stunningly sinister and majestically gothic. They travelled to the legendary Abbey Road Studios for this one; but it often sounds like it was recorded down in a dusky cellar where evil spirits linger and many a sinful thing happened. Nothing As The Ideal is heavy cauldron of dark and twisted magic. Creepy by default and completely enthralling! Furious, epic and cinematic!

Number 14

Number 14

What an album! We’re talking about Surge Ex Monumentis by JIRM which we found on Number 15. But now we move on. Cause there’s another diamond waiting for us around the corner… With a sweet twelve points jump we move up to Number 14. And here we find a band that got bigger and better and more errrr, ‘professional’ over the years and then decided to take it all back to its roots. Threw out all the fancy stuff, moved to a cabin in the mountains and started from scratch. It resulted in a very concise and even catchy psychedelic blues album that still has that vague, wild and ramshackle quality. And it all seems to sit there perfectly, with its rebellious energy, looking out at us, waiting for us to grab hold and drown in it’s weird majestic colors. Yes. On Number 14 we find…

All them Witches – ATW

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Yes yes. We know. This should have gone up on Monday. But that work crap is still getting in the way. Why is there always so much extra work to do before you leave for a little holiday. And then there were the new Doom Charts coming up. Also way more important! Hence, we have the Top 5 of Most Listened To Albums of Week 35 now for ya. The new All Them Witches album ATW soon to be released through New West Records has been on the most rotation. Their psychedelic blues suddenly got way more concise and even catchy at times. Still vague and wild, the ramshackle sound sits there perfectly among everything we love about All Them Witches! What an album! On the Waveriders (Ripple Music) forum they do this one album a day post. This time it was an album featuring Dave Grohl. I simply love his choppy and snarky drumming on Four On The Floor by Juliette and The Licks. Who in my opinion should record a new album, yesterday. And you know what, they have or are currently recording! Sure, one of these cats is involved with the Doom Charts. Does this mean we should refrain from commenting on their album? Hell no, we profess what we love when we dig something. And we are digging Forgotten Planet by Spirit Division! The different vibes smeared across the record all fit nicely as the scenery of a Forgotten Planet. It smells old and bronzed, but it feels heavy and sharp. A wild ride for sure! Kadavar releases a live album called Live In Copenhagen, through Nuclear Blast. They had to. Everyone was always telling them their live shows were so much better than their (stunning) studio albums. One and one makes two and this is definitely a live album that captures the essence of this wild trio! When Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats release a new album, we prepare for ritualistic bloodletting. Wasteland is definitely dystopic in content and sounds like the vintage lust of yore. But perhaps we need to dive deep into their reddened pool of garage doom to truly appreciate this offering… And we have all the time in the world for that when we are hitting the waves in Portugal next week… Good music! Great music! And we all know life would be a mistake without it!
