It’s my Personal Top 20. It keeps amazing me the amount of great music released every year. Ever since Stoner HiVe started in 2009 the amount of great releases in our little Heavy Underground niche is stunning. For even though you can peruse my Personal Top 20 here… There are many more albums that I thoroughly loved! Soon, a lot of Personal Top 20 lists of all the Contributors will appear on the Doom Charts Page. And will share mine there as well. Here, it’s just the list. Congratulations Kyle SB! The very best of wishes for the upcoming year and may it be a brilliant one. And we also congratulate him with his personal Top 20 today. The promo album arrived somewhere in March and immediately upon spinning Variant; we could not get over the fact that the vocals often shared the same color as Chris Goss and that there were these definite musical moments, mystical melodies that reminded of Goss’s Masters Of Reality as well. Second track Burns Like Basketweave being the pinnacle in that. And it turned Variant immediately into a household favorite and a much-played record. Variant is the classic and blues-tinged heavy rock, stoner infused album by Austin, Texas quartet Greenbeard. And indeed, it’s not just simply that… For the way they implore all the different heavy rock elements make them move ever more away from the trodden path and into a wild, strange and definite desert and alchemic rock adventure. And in the way the album dares to dive into the wind and take a look behind the veil of existence makes it even more reminiscent of Masters Of Reality. And then there’s more, more in the way of a saxophone, in soulful gospel breakdowns, in the width of every composition and the warmth of the production. Variant can easily and instantly be recognized as an amazing album and one that will ring on for a very long time to come…

Festival season is upon us! Finally! Oh, how we missed all those live shows… Which means many of the Contributors are out of bounce and bouncing hard to all those heavy tunes everywhere! Don’t worry, they all delivered their votes; but perhaps the blurbs are written by a lot of the same cats this month. It happens… But it happens exactly on the month that the Doom Charts crazies did something crazy once again… Indeed, we’ve extended the list to 40. There are multiple reasons to do so. But… We weren’t sure if we should. I mean, we could just post the total list of 299 albums that received votes this month. But then, that would defeat the purpose of the chart, we reckon. No, the main reason is the fact that the amount of albums released on a monthly basis, continues to grow and the sheer brilliance of many of those albums continue to shock and awe. Not so long ago albums could easily carry over a month. Or even two… You know, Lore by ELDER made the list three months in a row. This does not happen anymore, NOT because the albums aren’t that good, but because there are more and more albums THAT good. The amount of voters might also have something to do with that or perhaps that some promos are sometimes a bit too much ahead of the actual release date… Anyway… We’ve extended the list by ten… Should we keep it that way? Or go back to thirty? Let us know… O’ and let us know which albums you dug the most! Cause it might just be our next favorite album as well! Check’m out! Check’m all out!

As mentioned before, we returned from a wedding in Salisbury and a month-long trek through Britain just last week. So, there has been a lot of catching up to do, but also a lot of different stuff to listen to in preparation for a few interviews. Hence, the most listened to artist was Ernst Jansz. A Dutch musical legend and co-founder of CCC Inc and Doe Maar for instance. But even though the man is a bad-ass, the music has little to do with all the heaviness we rock out on over here. Like Radio Moscow’s new album New Beginnings. We’ve been following these cats since first meeting them back around 2009 when they played a dusty little wateringhole in Utrecht. And they still soar high on Cream, Zeppelin and Blue Cheer waves. We love their psychedelic rock and we reckon this one is their best effort yet! New Beginnings is out on Century Media Records and deserves everyone’s full attention! Necromandus, the story of Necromandus. Well, we will need more room for that. So we will mention them later on as well. But I would like to make sure that everyone gives this album released via Mandus Music a spin. Fans of seventies hardrock and CCR, Rush and Black Sabbath in special will immediately dig the hell out of it! I’m sure everyone knows about my obsession with Rancho De La Luna and all the people who ever set foot in there. So, when Troy van Leeuwen contributes to the new Chelsea Wolfe album Hiss Spun (out on Sargent House), you’ve got my attention. Aggressive, passionate and heavy! O’ and it also features Aaron Turner of Isis. Extremely addictive stuff! And we are still riding that majestic dragon called Lödarödböl by Texas trio Greenbeard. Such an amazing record! Blistering stoner riffage with bluesy psychedelia, precision vocal tones and a radiant progression of song craft. Let’s keep an eye on Sailor Records cause they’ve been releasing amazing stuff! 

A first week of great stuff and there is so much more! So much more!

We haven’t had much time the past month. It showed in updates and it showed in the amount of new albums listened to. Well, we have a bit more time now. For a week or two. So, we did a lot of listening again. Ofcourse everything the Doom Chart mentioned was high on the list. But we could not shy away from the new Queens Of The Stone Age. They have to this album not released a bad one. Although Era Vulgaris wasn’t really my cup of tea. And it seems this one will neither. Unfortunately. Not that it’s a bad album. It just doesn’t seem to move me. And that is what it is aimed at, physically, actually moving, I read. In preparation for an interview with Mr. Gilbert we listened to Mr.Big a lot. But what really moved us was the new Mother Engine! These German cats know how to rev up the machine! Another one that inspired is Greenbeard. Lödarödböl is a truly stunning piece of work; artwork included! Last but certainly not least, Red Mountains from Norway, have returned with a beautiful record. It shall be released at beginning of September and will surely captivate all you lovely freaks out there! See the mention tomorrow for a few more words about Red Mountains new album Slow Wander. But for now, turn up the volume and let the cool tunes set the right mood!
