The original street date seemed to have been for yesterday but is now set for September 25th! Or maybe the RidingEasy Records image used on the promo was just wrong from the get-go. But either way, we’ve been lucky enough to have been spinning the new Deathchant for quite some time now. And relentlessly, for the new nine-track album called Kova is unbelievably infectious and addictive! 

Their most melodic and emotional album yet perhaps? An album that uses all contrasts one could think off. Kova sounds like the four of them keep turning their amps towards the darkness one moment and towards the light the next. The trademark fury is always intact, scorching riffs, rumbling feedback, swinging grooves and fret-burning leads. But underneath, or threaded through the noise, there is something more vulnerable. Title track Kova the most obvious example. Acoustic guitars, soulful vocals, bluesy melodies and some atmospheric passages. All of this seem to suggest this is an album that is willing to breathe between all the blows it delivers… 

For it is an album that is shaped by grief, friendship, addiction and everything life might throw at us all. And that is the key factor perhaps, the emotional weights has seeped into every corner, every riff and every syllable uttered. Its has brought the words closer to the surface, with more deliberate and perhaps obvious choosing. And as those vocals hit harder and make an impact, the music moves freely between bruising heaviness to add to the blows, and quieter more reflective moments, to soften and soothe. The entirety of the beauty that is the middle track Worshipper being the prime example perhaps.
 
But for the all Deathchant worshippers out there, there is nothing to fear, for Kova never abandons the hard-driving spirit the band always had, it just give everything a deeper heart. It is that contrast thing again. A record about loss, pain, survival. Keeping the torch lit, searching through all the rubble and ultimately, finding something beautiful among all the wreckage and the ruin…
