Morning! This should have gone up yesterday of course. But you know how it is coming back after a festival. Getting grounded again, takes a bit of time. Freak Valley 2024 was awesome and even though I wasn’t there in any working capacity, pure to party my ass off, I might jot down a few words anyway. And due to be out of bounce for the better part of the week last week, there was only that damn fine write up by Stevie Reek about the amazing new Djiin album Mirrors! Which you should be checking out immediately if you haven’t already… Just like the list above!

Gooooood Morning Heavy Underground! It’s been one of those weeks again… What looked like a very nice week to HiVe, it soon turned out to be hectic. Deadlines, sudden interviews and all sorts of other stuff. And later today we’re off to Amsterdam to write something about that Tool band that’s supposed to be playing there. But we did manage to do some HiVe work, and looking at the amount of posts, I guess it’s not too shabby. Many on the list of Most Listened last week were featured. But we also posted about that new swirling The Swell Fellas single: The Drain. The Vitskär Süden single R’lyeh, which was topped by the full album review of course on Saturday. We mentioned the new Birdstone single, The Devil is something else, can’t wait for the full album to arrive. Let’s not forget we were honored to do another FULL ALBUM PREMIERE, this time for Kayleth’s awesome New Babylon. Which is out now on Argonauta Records! And last but certainly not least, for it’s a stunning new record: the new Tricklebolt! Honey From The Sky is bluesy, soulful, classic rock, featuring an all-star cast of the Dutch rock scene! Check’m out! Check’m all out!

Vitskär Süden – Vessel

Vitskär Süden – Vessel
Ripple Music – 2024
Rock, Prog, Psych
Rated: *****

They’re out there. The originals. The outsiders. The ones that will forever and always follow their own path. Damn the consequences. The cats that captain the Vitskär Süden tattered sails and barnacled ship, belong to that category. For if you’ve listened to their self-titled debut album and follow-up record The Faceless King, you could have easily imagined them going forth on soundtracking the fantasy world they’ve created in the dark progressive, dungeon noir sensory rich type of music they produced for those amazing two albums. But you can guess where that intro (and very long sentence) is leading up to. Here’s that obvious statement: the new album Vessel did not go that route. The fearful intensity of the songs turn the new Vessel record almost Biblical at times, horror themed, not in the hell-fire flashing before your eyes fashion, but in a dread below the placid water kind of way. H.P. Lovecraft to waltz with and move romantically through your magical hallucination. And where those earlier albums were full of imagery that were trust upon you, landscapes to traverse and to get familiar with, the new Vessel record feels like it’s meant to stay hazy, veiled and almost beyond your reach. Like that fabled veil that can only be lifted through dreams or death. And all that heaviness you might feel is offset by shining, at time almost lighter then air or exalted vocals, and thoughtful progressive compositions. The gradual procession steers towards pious ceremony, emotive and almost bursting with gravitas. There is so much space within each track, that you can hear every instrument breathe and place itself in context to where the song is leading you. Added touches of violin and cello in certain songs or the sheer amount of synth and piano offer up extremely rich instrumentation, without ever sounding cluttered. Cause we cannot state this enough, Vessel is wide, vast and open source progressive rock, there for you to fill in with your imagination. There’s no shortage in glorious moments, but it is the overall and total experience that is most captivating. There is a deliberate movement from each track into the next, and the full forty minutes of Vessel is the carrier that will whisk you away into the Vitskär Süden dream sequence.

Vitskär Süden - R'lyeh

Vitskär Süden - R'lyeh

It premiered over on Outlaws Of The Sun a few days ago, the new Vitskär Süden single and video R'lyeh. It’s taken from the new album Vessel which demands to be heard by all and demands to be written about by all… And well, by me. Which will happen at one point in time. I am pretty sure. Cause we dug their first self-titled album and love The Faceless King. And when they go more eighties, even more cinematic and namedrop John Carpenter as influence, you bet your ass we’re digging Vessel! And R'lyeh! It’s out on Ripple Music another big reason to go check it out…

G'mornin! A new week has started! And we get to do another Full Album Premiere this Thursday! So, better check in this Thursday right?! Did you check out that Sons Of Morpheus album Fruits? I hope you did. Cause it’s a diesel blues rocking stoner gem and you can read more ab out it HERE. That Sixteentimes Music label has some damn fine releases every year. You might want to check out the entire catalogue in fact, it’s bordering on the insane, the amount of quality there. We also did a Single Premiere for Elk Witch, Ghost Of The Lupatia has a beautiful video and musically it heralds the coming of that amazing Azimuth album out April 12 on Majestic Mountain Records. We talked about the new Chelsea Wolfe and Dekonstruktor and did a Quick Fire Friday session besides getting the February Peroration Post up for the Doom Charts. And just yesterday, on Sunday we talked about that crazy eighties loving Hypnosaur release. I know we could and should do better, but on average, I’d say, not a bad week all in all. Let’s hope we can do at least as much in the upcoming week. Check out those posts from last week if you haven't and check out those amazing albums we listened to the most last week!Enjoy!

I see the Doom Charts… But luckily we see them only once a month. On the First Friday of every month, the new edition of the Doom Charts go up. It doesn’t feel like they’re everywhere and all the time, right? There is no Doom Charts overkill is there? Cause even though we do the Friday Freebie sessions and we do the Peroration Post, we try to limit the amount of Doom Charts posts. Cause we’re only here to try and guide you all to albums that comes straight out of the Heavy Underground and that we feel need to be heard by everyone… Sure, there are some big names among them, sometimes. Or big names to the Heavy Underground ears. But the Contributors all feel that the albums we vote for every month, should be heard by everyone. And there is so much. There really and truly is. This month, 221 different albums, all received votes. That’s another 181 albums that aren’t featured among the forty below. And soon, the year-end-lists will start appearing. All of them listing the top albums of 2022. And if you consider the fact that we all keep discovering new amazing albums from past months and past years as well… We can only conclude that we live in amazing times, musically speaking… If only we could get our act together on all the different fronts as well.. Vitskär Süden – The Faceless King

Vitskär Süden – The Faceless King
Ripple Music – 2022
Rock, Psych, Prog, Dark, Noir
Rated: *****

We’ve said it before, if you want to tell a story, it’s about setting the scene. And some bands are true masters in that respect. With the right kind of the tones and approach, you can feel a dungeon breeze snatch your soul in its teeth and scarper off to a cobwebbed corner of your prison. You will see the scorched landscape, the burnt air leaving lingering tastes of something similar to bacon and you will see The Faceless King grin. That evil smile that will haunt your dreams for the rest of your life. The Los Angeles quartet Vitskär Süden is back with a new dark fantasy story. It is called The Faceless King and as concept albums go, there shall be very few albums released this year that can rival this record in scenery, imagery and scope. For, if you are so bold as to dive into the story, and if you are so bold to order the deluxe version, you will also get a Dungeons & Dragons, 24-page long, fully illustrated RPG-module, that dives even deeper into the history of The Faceless King. And a mighty fantasy it is, with minor horror influences it creates its own mythopoeia about an anti-hero King, rising, dying and returning with an even more sinister heart. And then there’s the music, the beautiful music that would have told its tale even without vocals. For when opener The Way – Part 1 starts, you are immediately dragged into their world. Most of the album leans on half-time-heavy tempo or the slower approach like on this wonderful opening track. Seagull guitar, eerie synth touches, all giving you the feeling of something extremely mystical that is slowly seeping into your blood. And then the transition, with the vocals into the The Way – Part 2. This changeover into that heavier, creepier sound, so expertly done. Recalling weird memories of a Drywall song, but more prog, intense and so imposing. It’s easy to see this one as an immediate favorite, but then third track Archdiocese Of Worms hits, weaving its psych, prog and folk tapestry on an even grander scale. You feel the vampiric acid of the Archdiocese slowly transfer into your being as the guitar rings on and the drums, with its pronounced, yet subdued thrashing, and then those final instants when the bass rumbles and thumps, like a distant earthquake slowly closing in… We could continue about every one of the following four tracks, but we would not want to spoil the ending before you have a chance to see the movie yourself. Cause I recall hearing Vitskär Süden's 2020 self-titled debut for the first time, after reading only a few raving reviews and remarks on websites here and there and being shocked at the complete and epic narrative it unfolded, the heavy psychedelic and progressive rock, colored in with dark noir, gothic and folk elements. It was one of the best moments of that fucked up year. And we would not want to deprive you of a similar experience. It is a breathtaking adventure... And I am sure, that as the final tones of closing track The Broken Crown die away, and you take that huge breath of air, you will feel the wind dying down, and the silence descending, turning the night sky into a frozen reflection of infinite stars… And among those stars... That evil grin...

The Doom Chart for May 2020

Doom Chart

“You see, there’s nothing to do anymore. Everything decent has been done.  All the great themes have been used up, turned into theme parks. So I don’t really find it exactly cheerful to be living in the middle of a totally exhausted decade where there’s nothing to look forward to and no one to look up to….

….I like the idea that a voice could just go somewhere uninvited like a dirty thought in a nice clean mind.
~ Mark Hunter (Pump up the Volume, 1990)

As the mysterious Mark Hunter preached in the cult classic Pump up the Volume, released back in 1990, the feeling of despair is as relevant today as it ever was. The difference now being we have dedicates blogs and websites along with thousands of new and eager bands everywhere to challenge and pay homage to the great themes of yesteryear. We are amidst some revolutionary times in both music and humanity. We’ll stick to what we’re good at here being the hard, and heavy underground music. At the Doom Charts we like to think we’re doing our part to divert the chaos from the real world into the peaceful anarchy of our stereos. This pandemic can’t compete with the heavy underground for much longer. We’re at our breaking point and so are our speakers. Let’s put the doom and gloom that dominates the news outlets and world politics on mute and pump up the volume with the top 30 albums currently on rotation decided by the Doom Charts voting booth for the month of May.

I could not have said it better… And even though that’s not all that matters; there are more important things in the world. But this thing we’ve got right here, the heavy stuff, that will definitely keep us sane… Now let’s hope we all get through the pandemic safe and we come out of it on the other end better, on every level. We feel for every human being on this globe and we cannot fathom our luck to have been born where we have been born. WE get to enjoy this world. This society and all this freaking good heavy music. There are many out there that can’t and have not been born so lucky… But before I go rambling in that direction… Let’s get the word out that the Doom Charts for May are here! And we we’re so lucky, to write a short blurb about Horisont… And we were so lucky to see many of our choices end up on the Chart. Wolftooth and Black Rainbows ofcourse! But also Faith In Jane and Kayleth, man, those have been on heavy rotation as well! Geezer! How Groovy can you get?! Vitskär Süden, a different kind of heavy; and so addictive. And Wailin’ Storms on Number 26! Ye gods, what a storm it is! And guess what, of the 308 albums that made the final total list, I could not find one I dislike! How lucky are we! Here’s the May 2020 Doom Charts! And here’s me continuing to hope humanity will finally find a way…

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 10 Most Listened Albums Last Week…

Another week has passed and it was another week filled with lots of different albums. The ten above got the most spins. But there is one that is now on heavy rotation and will surely be for the rest of next week. The self-titled debut by Vitskär Süden. I already saw it mentioned by many of the Doom Chart Contributors the past week, but had not yet found the time to check it out. Even though the Doom Charts ofcourse premiered their first video a couple of days ago: Trickle of The Snail! It has everything you love and yet is entirely different! Go read what Frazer Jones had to say about it on his Desert Psychlist! And after that, check out the rest of the albums! Cause they’re all freakin tasty!
