I have this weird relationship with split albums and have not reviewed many for Stoner HiVe. I do follow certain split record series, cause on some level they are excellent. Think Ripple Music’s Turned To Stone or The Second Coming Of Heavy chapters. And Desert Records is doing an equally stunning job with its Legends Of The Desert series. Which started off with Palehorse/Palerider & Lord Buffalo. The second installment featured The Penitent Man and Cortége. And now they’ve managed to get two honest to god, bonafide, Legends Of The Desert for the third episode. We’re talking Fatso Jetson and Dali’s Llama here! And both bring their own desert rocking flavor to the split album.

First up is Fatso Jetson with four tracks that meander from desert to blues, to stoner, to punk, to garage and back. A lot of meandering and slow moving rock, that feels orchestral or even orquesta, especially on the two instrumentals. Second track Angels Flight sees punk troubadour, desert pirate and sand poet Sean Wheeler adding his vocals as an extra magical touch.  Opener Night Of The Living Amends, is a slow sailing instrumental rocker that feels warm to the touch and gives off this classic desert rocking feel. With added keywork by Mathias Schneeberger, it also gives off an eighties television series vibe. And then you get hit by Angels Flight, which tells its story as the sun seems to go down on a warm and shimmering city and even though the red glow of the setting sun makes it all seem beautiful, there is woe here, luck running out and a darkness looming. That double voice when the second part of the tale comes in, will tear a rupture through your soul and leave a scar on your heart. Following instrumental rocking Todas Petrol Blues will blow away the emotions from Angels Flight and give you a more Palm Desert and Rancho De La Luna vibe, staccato riffs, robotic drums, all very elusive and yet in your face. One of Seven, the Final Fatso, as languid as the rock might be, the hammer still comes down, or better yet, swings. Even though in this case the meaning of the lyrics might be elusive, the instruments do this very stand fast thing, which makes you think the lyrics might be about facing the music and standing your ground.

Dali’s Llama are always on fire and always provide you with something different than what they did before. We only ever mentioned their Desert Lung EP on the HiVe, which was hundred percent desert punk. This time they get a bit heavier, turning up the blues, the proto touch and even the doom. And like Fatso Jetson they also give us four tracks. Four tracks that immediately show their darker, storm cloud colors with the two openers: Coyotes In The Graveyard and Lizards. Both definitely desert animals that strike hard like a hammer from the gods. And then comes Rarified, a more stoner trucking monster, with delicious bass work and a dead certain destination to get to. That is, until there’s a break in the song, and a bluesy banjo, thanks to Mikael Jacobson, articulates what feels like a summer drizzle that might turn into a full-on down poor any second. Side B and the album ends with Hypnotic Wind, which returns to the more thundering doom approach from the first two Dali’s Llama tracks. And the lyrics of all those Dali’s Llama tracks, brilliant and enchanting.

So as you might have gather from the text and abundance of adjectives above, this is a truly magical desert rock album. Insanely beautiful and overwhelming you with the highly different takes on what desert rock is all about. In short, there will never be a better desert rock split album. The legends turned out something legendary for Legends Of The Desert Vol.3.

It’s the start of the new week! Or does yours start off on another day? And it looks like it might be a good one when it comes to having time to do Stoner HiVe and more. The past week held an interview with Dani Filth about the new Cradle of Filth live album and had me listening to the Top 10 above. Can you do the math? There are eleven bands listed! Indeed, it felt right this way. Because the new Desert Records album Legends Of The Desert Vol.3 has been on heavy rotation over here, featuring Fatso Jetson and Dali Llama, both with four tracks, both amazing four tracks and therefor equally important! Hope to do more for the HiVe later today! Perhaps something about that Legends Of The Desert Split? Have a great week y’all!

We’ve been floating along the majestic tunes of Sons Of Alpha Centauri, Yawning Man and everything Gary Arce ever produced for quite some time now. So when the new Sky Island album by that most wonderful of collaboration projects called Yawning Sons emerged we could not stop spinning it. Even more so since this time around they invited quite a few other desert magicians along for the ride. Maestro Dandy Brown, Mario Lalli, Scott Reeder and Wendy Rae Fowler all joined the Yawning Sons line-up to help produce an album that will definitely blow every languid prog, laidback desert and dreamy stoner loving fiend’s mind. Imploring mastering aid from John McBain this is once again a stunning release by Yawning Sons. Evoking subtle and little echoes from David Bowie and Chris Goss during a few instances, being lyrical pronunciation or alchemic melody, the eight tracks will transport you to a different plane of existence altogether. And we must confess that those tracks (Low In The Valley, Gravity Underwater) that feature that sweet and blessed voice of Dandy Brown simply take the breath away. The same can be said for Cigarette Footsteps, featuring Mario Lalli. All of them not only excel in vocal delivery, the compositions seem to mirror the sky, with ringing guitar work, pulsating bass and controlled slow moving drums. And it feels extremely unfair to single those out, cause the rest of ‘m, are just as good. Cosmic and yet very earthy, astral and o' so tangible... What an amazing album!

This should have gone up yesterday. But we all know how it works and what the deal is. Another week. Another list of artists listened which we listened to the most in those seven days. It has been a disastrous one; carrying the demise of a hero with it. I was looking for the right words, trying to compose a fitting epitaph, something original. But everything has been said and on many levels there is nothing right to say about what happened. He was a true voice and I loved all of his projects and all of his records, except the one with Timbaland ofcourse, which for some reason does not get mentioned a lot the past week. For me it started with Superunknown, when it was released, which stayed on repeat for months. After which I went back to the Badmotorfinger album, Louder Than Love and Ultramega OK. And then on to Temple of The Dog. I never got to see Soundgarden live. Seen him solo a couple of times and with Audioslave and with the reforming of Soundgarden and the King Animal album I had good hopes to be able to catch them live one day. Their albums will stay with me forever and that time when I first got to know them even more. It is without a doubt the soundtrack to a certain time and place and one that carved out a destination. He was his own character an amazing songwriter and an even better vocalist. And for all that he will be truly missed. But his family and friends will miss him even more. Our thoughts go out to them and to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Thanks for all your music Mr. Cornell and may you rest in peace or rock hard with all the others up there, wherever that may be…

There is always something special about a good seven inch. It is that smash ‘n grab mentality. To really get your heart racing and your blood cooking before its time is up. We love the seven inch. Although we must confess we always judge them harshly. For if a seven-inch messes up its valuable time, we shall refrain from putting the needle back on it and instead opt for a full-sized record. But when the limited run split seven inch turned up featuring heroes Fatso Jetson and the Dutch heavy surfers Del-Toros we were pretty confident it would be needle burner! And so it was. It kept being spun during the entire month of December and January and we can safely say it is a stunning release. Released by Shattered Platter, my number 617, has been on heavy rotation. And I had not expected to be so enchanted with Die Cast, the Del-Toros three-piece song. Recorded by PCR van Elderen in my hometown of Eindhoven the track in heavy laced with fine samples and punky surf sounds on reverb. It’s only almost five minutes, but those minutes you surf on high groove that will have you lusting for sunny times and cool drinks, dangerous nights and loose women. Yes, Adventure time it is! And the alternate version of the Dreamhomes track, which can be found, minus two minutes on Fatso Jetson’s awesome Idle Hands record of 2016, delivers the instrumental goodness once again. Instead of surfing the infinite crest of high and beautiful waves, the Fatso Jetson effort stumbles and rumbles and lumbers through the fog. This two minute longer version is so much more beautiful and intense, you wonder why they did not incorporate this version on the record. It’s delirious and sweltering and will have you on edge for the entire (almost) seven minutes. Yes, this seven-inch is once again a true smash ‘n grab and will leave you smitten with these infinitely cool tunes!

And once again we are treated to a magnificent new project from the surroundings of the all mighty Palm Desert, La Quinta and Indio near Los Angeles in the United States of America. Gary Arce, string magician of Yawning Man, and the man who stood at the beginning of all that goodness that has been coming from the desert, implored help for his new project Zun from the likes of John Garcia (Kyuss), the lovely Sera Timms (Ides of Gemini, Black Math Horseman), Bill Stinson (Yawning Man), Harper Hug (Vista Chino), Mario Lalli (Yawning Man, Fatso Jetson) and last but not least Doors guitar player Robbie Krieger. This collection of artists give us a veritable musical adventure. Floating, peaceful, almost ambient desert rock that leaves you in awe of nature, the earth and the universe. Tightly wrapped in all the righteous musical colors. Burial Sunrise, from the new project Zun, is a definite Gary Arce album, a hero who leaves the talking to his guitar and always lets the guitar speak wonderful tales of exploration...

Back from the mountains... Without a car...

Back from the mountains...

We have returned from flying from the top of mountains and jumping of barstools. And we have ended with a mighty ordeal and lost our car. Who knows. It might never even turn up again. And we might never know for certain what was actually wrong with the beast; for it is hard to communicate with hands and feet. But all in all; it was an awesome ride… And one we would do again, when the moment arises!

And tomorrow… I’m gonna light myself on fire and fly around the room!

You must not forget... Fatso Jetson & Yawning Man on tour through Europe! And tomorrow in Deventer with the new incarnation of Ten East! Featuring members of Automatic Sam!

O’ yes, my furry little freaks. The grandmasters are coming to Europe once again! Apart from all the wonderful things that are in the works for the guys, they are also heading out for a stiff tour. Psst. And for the people who can hit the Dutch dates; they will likely be joined by Automatic Sam. Who already jammed the big jam with the uncles. And henceforth turned and twisted into the new Ten East line-up. Which now entails: Gary Arce & Bill Stinson of Yawning Man and Erik Harbers & Pieter Holkenborg of Automatic Sam.
