Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Another week starts… With another king hell of a hangover. So, that means we should put up the Top 5 of Most Listened albums of the past week. That always clears the head right up. Putting on some good music to listen to while typing out the Top 5, that’s how it starts, how it always starts. Today we go for the new Tranzat album, a bandname that reminded Doktor420 of a ‘transgender Tarzan’. But the music does not! The Great Disaster definitely deserves your attention! But it is not among the Top 5. Those bands are: Shields, The Sword, Earthless, Stone Temple Pilots and Lonely Kamel. All of them have new albums out and all of them need to be listened to on a regular basis! Well, Bill Goodman made us check out the new Stone Temple Pilots and we must say it is not bad. But it doesn’t seem to do anything for us either. The new Used Future out on Razor & Tie by The Sword has a similar effect, though that may just take a moment or two more to sink in. Lonely Kamel’s Death's-Head Hawkmoth album out on Stickman Records on the other hand has the opposite effect, a real zinger! As good a Dust Devil or even better! Shields is fun. Had to listen to it a couple of times to let all the fun shine through. But with all fun records, they usually do not last long. Once you’ve heard the punchline; a couple of times, the joke turns stale. We fear this might happen the Use Protection album as well. And then there’s Black Heaven by Earthless, out on Nuclear Blast and recorded in Rancho De La Luna, highly anticipated, to say the least. Obviously good, but how good, that will take a little more time… As is the case with so many more albums. So let’s check’m out! All of them! Yes! All of them!

Number 16

Number 16

“I am not strict vegan, because I'm a hedonist pig. If I see a big chocolate cake that is made with eggs, I'll have it.” ~ Grace Slick

Three points above those two crazy bands on Number 17 we find no less than three groups celebrating all that goodness that free rock and stoner trucking entails. Three bands that came through with albums this year that a lot of you out there thought were the best of the entire year. But still, they did not get enough points to end up higher than this wild Number 16. Perhaps there was some heavy warfare on route to the country. Or perhaps the psychic power never made it completely into the mind of everyone. Well, they did make into yours! And they sure as hell made it into mine. So above We Hunt Buffalo & Ruby The Hachet we find…

Clutch – Psychic Warfare,
Freedom Hawk – Into Your Mind &
 The Sword – High Country

Red Fang, The Sword and Komatsu at the Effenaar, Eindhoven

Red Fang, The Sword and Komatsu at the Effenaar, Eindhoven

It was hot and sweaty in Eindhoven. Even though the temperature wasn’t that high the rainfront that was moving in made everything humid, clammy and desirable. It was a promise of something. A storm, a marvelous night or even a righteous adventure. And what better way to herald such a night than to see a couple of bands level a packed venue in your hometown. After the cancellation of Clutch the bill still contained three exciting bands that can stand tall on every stage. The early evening started of with Komatsu paving the way for all the heaviness to come. A tad bit sloppy guitar and too precise drumwork made the beginning sound both clinical and shaky. But that was only the beginning; cause after they picked up speed Komatsu steamrolled through a half filled venue with feverous energy and a strangeling aggression that got everyone riled up for more. Especially after the Slo Burn cover July…

After which The Sword had it easy. The crowd has swelled and as the vintage sound of The Sword moved across the floor the heads bopped and the bodies moved. Grins facewide, sedutive smiles and eerie recollections of memories that might not even have happened. The Sword seemed to play a homeshow and had everyone eating out of their palms. Impressive guitarwork that changed color as they revisited old songs and played their new stuff. Loads of young folk in the crowd. Most of them had come for the closing act but were now in love with The Sword as well.

But when it comes to blowing people apart and stealing everyones heart; Red Fang takes the cake and eats it too with a truckload of beer to wash it down. Holy hell; what a revenge. For on Speedfest back in December they did not convince all that much. But the fun gang put on one hell of a show after becoming the headliner of this mini-tour. Still somewhat in awe of the reception by the crowd the guys seem to enjoy every second on stage and decided to bounce that energy right back. From the first tones till the very last they pounded and pounded till every little bit of doubt was battered and bruished and transformed into full on believe. Indeed; Red Fang is heading for greatness!

Number 19

Number 19

"Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." Matthew 10:34

On their fourth studio album these four freaks make their stoner metal grow a set of wings and take off like a malicious bird of prey. Propelled ever faster and with more precision their songs bulge of impressive vocals and lyrical hooks that take aim and destroy before you can blink with your left eye. And as the beast takes flight again its looks to see the earth scorched by awesome riffs, wicked variations and excellent solos. And thanks to the drum powered groove the entire structure of the album rumbles and grumbles and shakes and torments the very soul of the earth. And hidden within it all is the desire to shatter the anvil and take up The Sword to conquer the world…

Number 4

Number 4

As we approach the top three of the 2010 list of albums we come to a highly anticipated one. One that might not have satisfied every one of those hopes; but enough to reach number four on the list. These Texans give their own honest spin to the hardrock of the seventies and eighties and their third (concept) album can be construed as an ode to the almighty and true heaviness of the riff. Riffs that can easily hold their own next to the ones of the Greats and get the adrenaline pumpin! Cause it is a supercharged rollercoaster ride of diabolical pounding rhythms, high-powered riffs and annihilating solos. Their ferocious mixture of stoner, doom, metal and hardrock is infections and awe-inspiring. So let’s fly high on their relentless riffage! And these were the great highs for the band; but there was also a low point this year. They had to cancel their European dates with Karma To Burn due to the drummer suddenly leaving the band. Let’s hope they find an equally impressive one!
