Kal-El – Astral Voyager Vol.2

Kal-El – Astral Voyager Vol.2
Majestic Mountain Records / Blues Funeral Recordings – 2026
Metal, Space, Stoner, Rock, Doom, Prog
Rated: ****

Kal-El’s Astral Voyager Vol.2 must be one of the most anticipated albums for 2026 right? With raving reviews for Astral Voyager Vol.1 across the globe in 2025. Landing on the Number 2 spot of the  Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2025 and on the Number 1 position of the Doom Charts Top 100 for 2025. Everyone is giddy with the expected euphoria. And some of that anticipation was quenched with the first two singles already released: Juno and Juggernaut. The rest of the new Kal-El universe will open up on March 20th…

And after Juno has opened the new forty-two minute long album, you will be treated to the longest track on the record called The Nine. Which moves a bit in the direction of Sergeant Thunderhoof without losing any of the typical ice cold Scandi-stoner, tundra rock, freezing space sound they have become known for. For yes, if Astral Voyager Vol.1launched Kal-El into the cosmos, Astral Voyager Vol.2 pushes the throttle even further. The second half of this cosmic diptych continues the band’s multi-dimensional trip with the confidence of a group fully locked into their orbit. The story of interstellar bounty hunter Mica unfolds further as she evades the mysterious Nine across time and space, but the real propulsion here is, unsurprisingly, riff power…

Kal-El once again blend stoner metal with touches of doom and swirling space rock, wrapped in that thick, fuzzy tone we’ve come to expect. Massive riffs crash down like meteor showers while soaring desert-, errr, tundra-rock hooks keep things infectious and addictive. There’s also that unmistakable Kal-El shimmer we already mentioned in earlier reviews: a cold spark running through the record that gives the whole thing a slightly icy, cosmic glow. They obviously wanted Vol.2 to only move into more progressive territory here and there, with tiny movements, keeping the overall feeling that these two Volumes belong together intact.

Ståle Rodvelt’s vocals cut through the haze with clarity, lifting the big choruses and giving the songs that extra lift-off moment when the riffs finally explode. Add those few progressive touches and the result is an album that keeps evolving without losing its groove. Kal-El have been delivering quality ever since Ecosphere, was released in 2015. But the Astral Voyager saga might be their most complete statement yet. It ends with Asteroid, eight minutes of ever evolving largesse, in both riffs, rhythm and vocal lines. They start out huge, build and grow, become gigantic with vocals that soar through the universe and which bring you towards the end of the known galaxy. Where it all crashes down. So… You’d better strap in… This time the ride goes far beyond the event horizon…

Number 2

Number 2

Almost fifteen hundred points! Another huge jump to reach the Number 2 album of 2025 according to all of your votes. It switched places with the one on Number 1 constantly and was on so many lists, it is surely a favorite album for everyone across the globe. Released in May through Blues Funeral Recordings and Majestic Mountain Records, it sky-rocketed to the Number 1 spot on that months’ Doom Charts. And with the promise of a Volume 2 following this album, (March 20th to be exact!) the anticipation for this band’s abilities has only grown to immense proportions. Stoner metal mixed with minor doom touches and space elements. Incredibly fuzzy and even opting for some more progressive touches here and there. It’s the quintet doing their own brilliant thing! They have a certain ring to their sound, a cold spark and an icy glimmer. It’s always been there, but this time around, it’s what makes the entire album hum and sing. The energy seems to vibrate at a perfect pitch. And it gives their metallic edge that extra bit of shine. Delivering constantly in big riffs and soaring payoffs. The vocals are pristine and add that extra bit of shiver. The band has delivered many great albums in the span of their career, starting ten years ago with Ecosphere and Dark Majesty from 2021 making it to the Number 11 position of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2021 according to all of your votes. But this new one, is on a different level. Topping up on everything you have come to love about the band. The record takes you on a celestial drive and beyond the event horizon, eternity awaits…

Number 20

Number 20

There were only a few moments in the past weeks that two albums occupied the same spot. During the final hours, this happened again. And yes, on Number 20 we find two albums! Both of them released during the first months of 2025. Both of them got reviewed on Stoner HiVe and we wrote something that hopefully enticed you to listen to these albums. To this ferocious fuzz-soaked journey. Bursting with Kyuss-worthy stoner grit, metallic muscle, and stunning musicianship, this addictive album only grows deeper with repeat listens. Loud, dynamic, and irresistibly heavy! For the other album we jotted down some thoughts that could guide you along this brutal descent into doom, sludge, and pure sonic warfare. Burning riffs, pulverizing drums, and desperate fury collide across eight devastating tracks. From crushing epics to punked-out assaults, this is a band at their most colossal and merciless! With some forty points above the Number 21 we find two bands…

Doomherre – Plaguelords

Doomherre – Plaguelords
Skatbo Records / Majestic Mountain Records
Metal, Doom, Classic
Rated: ****

They’re back! And with Plaguelords, Stockholm’s Doomherre hit harder than a hammer on frozen skull! From the very first riff of Serpent Shrine, you are dragged into their universe. A world full of molten guitar lines, thunderous bass work and drums that roll and pummel like an ancient war drum out of a Norse saga. Epic is the word! This is the doom with a pulse, a groove and a way to get all that ice cold blood a racing. This is a wonderful universal nod towards all the legends of yore, the classic metal and the doom we all love so dearly…

Two years after the remarkably self-assured Bonegoat, this is an album that confirms the trio as one of the most compelling forces in today’s doom underground. Victor Takala’s vocals soar and bite, straddling clean heroics and gritty menace, carrying tales of Nordic myth and shadowy landscapes. Tracks like Dark Hand and Blodregn (Sabbatsberg II) whisper, then roar, while the title track and final track This Burning Guilt crash and hit like cinematic lightning bolts.

Plaguelords is the calling card from your newest doom heroes. And it’s a calling card you can feel in your bones. A battering ram. You feel it smash through your chest, dark, melodic, and gloriously unrelenting! We loved Bonegoat, but with the new album Doomherre you realize the three horsemen have truly arrived… And yes… They have brought the apocalypse…

Lacertilia – Transcend

Lacertilia – Transcend
Majestic Mountain Records – 2025
Stoner, Metal, Psych, Punk, Doom
Rated: ****

Some of you know that there’s a point in every trip, where reality starts to break up and melt. The universe starts to vibrate at a different level and glimpses of what the edge might be can occur. Well, Transcend, the new album by Welsh cosmic marauders Lacertilia hits that exact frequency! These freaks from the Cardiff heavy underground have already spent much of the decade past dragging their stoner-psych gospel from dark and dusty basements to venues across the UK. And with Transcend they should be set to take it to stages across the globe. Especially with Majestic Mountain Records now backing their crusade.

On Transcend they sound like they’ve broken through the haze and the clouds and found that the gods of volume were waiting on the other side with golden chalices full of riffs. The woozy and folky incantation Archaic Oscillations opens the album and feels like a warm sunrise after a three day peyote ritual in the desert. After that we go boom, and following We Go Here truly detonates, riffs erupt, drums quake and we hear a manic preacher screaming around like a sweat-drenched prophet in a ruined chapel. There’s no singing here, this is commanding and demanding and zealously sermonizing his stories. The chapel almost collapsing entirely from the grinding bass and quaking drum grooves.

By the time cathedral like, ten and a half minute long middle track, Nothing’s Sacred rolls in, you will start to believe. Believe Lacertilia have found the main nerve. Echoes spiraling and throbbing, everything drenched in reverb, washing over you like gigantic waves of bliss, lifting you up and making you feel like you are floating high above all the ruins of civilization, watching the earth itself breathe in slow motion. Final apocalyptic event The Sun Is The Key, blows it all wide open, starting earthy and languid, building gradually, and then turning into a blazing cosmic exorcism that obliterates everything and leaves nothing but feedback and blinding white light.

The DNA of legendary bands like Orange Goblin, Monster Magnet and even The Doors might be coursing through their veins but Transcend is a hundred percent Lacertilia. Welsh fuzz punks turned cosmic prophets. And with their new revelation that is Transcend, they might reach the furthest parts of the stoner psyche, colliding it all with a messy and magnificent mixture of doom, punk, stoner and mysticism. They have seen the other side, they have dipped their toes over the edge. And with Transcend you might get a momentary glimpse as well. Turn it up loud and hold on, cause reality will not be around once side B hits…

King Potenaz – Arcane Desert Rituals Vol.1

King Potenaz – Arcane Desert Rituals Vol.1
Majestic Mountain Records – 2025
Rock, Doom, Stoner
Rated: ****

The Italian trio going by the name of King Potenaz has gone through a ferocious development in just three years. Delivering their first two track demo back in January 2022, following that up with two singles and then turning those tracks and four more into the wonderful debut full-sized album that is Goat Riders which was released in April 2023. And then, back in March we already got the news that a new one was on the horizon and that Rivers Of Death would be the lead single. A doom march rife with the occult and slithering with creepiness. As warm as a freshly dug grave, the fuzz is ever present and so is the feeling of death, lurking around the corner. And that feeling and that atmosphere is ever present on the new album called Arcane Desert Rituals Vol.1. Out on Majestic Mountain Records it contains four tracks filled with mysterious doom and ritualistic proto rocking. There’s a sludgy touch, something wicked and something wild. Most tuned down low, slow and morose. And then sometimes, when the moon is full and the energy feels especially right, they speed up or turn a corner that leads into a heavy metal Cul De Sac. Psychedelic middle parts of a swing and groove to sway to and let fly your thoughts, it’s all there and more. Although Arcane Desert Rituals Vol.1 might not be the immediate power grab, it soon starts to take hold and slowly strangle you until you fold and submit to King Potenaz. And once you do, you start to hear those minutely infused weird drum parts, that bass that goes into a different direction and those vocals that sound like Satan storming into heaven. Final track Ariadne, The Serpent Witch adds the wonderful voice of Jana Maista to make it an even grander ritual, an arcane and ancient sounding opening, only slowly turning away from that atmospheric glow to become this harsher thunderstorm and then letting the voice radiate again with all her elven and angelic beauty. But of course, she’s a witch. So, the darkness and the wickedness does return. Before it all dissipates into the shimmering ritualistic fantasy it all might have been…

Rated: *****

Did these two powerhouse labels compete to get to release the new Kal-El album? Or did Majestic Mountain Records and Blues Funeral Recordings immediately decide to release Astral Voyager Vol.1 together? Was it because they equally loved the new Kal-El? Or is it just a way to keep shipping costs down? Either way, we are glad they did! For the new six track release is one for the ages, for eternity probably. And to think it will be followed up by a Vol.2 and probably this year? Wow! Another diptych of stoner bliss! Stoner metal mixed with minor doom touches and space elements. Incredibly fuzzy and even opting for some more progressive touches here and there. It’s Kal-El doing their own brilliant thing! SINGLE PREMIERE - Black Magic Tree - Roadway

SINGLE PREMIERE

Black Magic Tree - Roadway

After being in love with their earlier album Through The Grapevine and the Págos single they released in January, we are thoroughly thrilled to bring you the SINGLE PREMIERE for the brand new track by Black Magic Tree! Taken from the new Terra album, soon to be released on Majestic Mountain Records this is raver, a road song, that travelling companion that takes you on a wild romp through the stoner, psych and seventie rock scene. It's called Roadway and its entirely impossible not to fall in love with... I mean, just listen to that guitar, the tone, the riff, and round it goes! Impossible not to fall in love with! All over again!

PR Wire:

The German rockers Black Magic Tree is back with another banger with their 2nd single 'ROADWAY' taken from their new album TERRA that will be released later this year!

Bio:

Black Magic Tree is a Berlin-based German band formed in 2015, known for their heavy blues rock'n'roll, stoner, and psychedelic rock sound. Drawing inspiration from the 50s, 60s, and especially the 70s, they blend classic rock vibes with modern flair. The band consists of Alessandro Monte (vocals), Christian Reuter (guitars), Max Milan Bergrath (guitars), Michael Hupp (drums), and Philipp Ott (bass). After releasing their debut EP "Of Animals and Men" in 2019, they dropped their first full-length album, "Through the Grapevine," in 2021 via Karma Conspiracy Records. Rooted in Berlin’s vibrant music scene, they continue to evolve, with a new album currently in the works. Now signed to Majestic Mountain Records for the release of their sophomore album "TERRA".

Quote about the song:

"ROADWAY combines heavy guitar riffs with playful and infectious melodies that'll get stuck in your head instantly. This ass shaker is filled to the brim with good time rock swagger vibes and head nod grooves!"

Kaiser – 2nd Sound

Kaiser – 2nd Sound
Majestic Mountain Records – 2025
Rock, Stoner, Metal
Rated: *****

Helsinki, Finland is home to the trio known as Kaiser. And that city will surely have the pleasure of seeing them perform their new album 2nd Sound soon enough! For the album will be out tomorrow on Majestic Mountain Records and it is one hell of a wild adventure! A truly addictive ride that starts with opening track Brotha and ends with eight and final song Aftershock. There are moments when the boys go full Kyuss. That beautiful atavistic stoner rocking. And it’s celebrating a lot of the more metal side of the heavy underground. But all of those avenues are transversed with power and sheer force. And as you wallow comfortably in that knowledge and accept there is no escape from Kaiser’s 2nd Sound they manage to up the dynamics, freak out with guitars or have the bass do something even wilder.  You’ve heard Brotha, you’ve been having it on repeat. If not, go listen immediately. But that’s just the magnificent opener. 1,5 Dozen follows and ups the ante with fierce energy and a furious noisy assault. Soon opening up, exchanging the screams for more melodic vocal work, harmonizing even and thundering ever forward as the guitar gets to lift off and soar. The way they then make Meteorhead sound so effortless and riddled with boogie, how it revolves around itself, spinning towards something inevitable. Feral vocals dragging you along towards the shouted ‘Meteorhead’ middle part, anxious for participation from the crowd. And that drum work on this third track, stunning is an understatement! Beautiful guitar, with the solo stretching exactly far enough to give you even more awareness of the magnificent bass you’ve been hearing. The musicianship of the entire album only becomes apparent after you’ve been shocked and awed into listening to the record on repeat. For at first it might seem hidden among all that gritty and grimy fuzz work, that deliberate steamrolling aspect of this album. But as your head wraps itself around it, you will realize you are listening to one hell of a luxuriously crafted tonal beauty. It’s simple, we’re just entering March, but Kaiser’s 2nd Sound is one of the best albums to be released this year…

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - Forgotten King – The Seeker

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Forgotten King – The Seeker

The wait wasn’t that long… You closed your eyes, took a deep breath and there she was! The FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for that highly atmospheric, contemplative doom and shadow dappled stoner album The Seeker, by Norway’s own Forgotten King. It’s the project by Azul Josh from Kal-El and offers his insights on personal trials and tribulations, metal illness, ego and spirituality. Rife with emotion, this is the doom that might aid others in time of need as well. Out on Majestic Mountain Records tomorrow, on Friday the 6th of September we are honored to bring you the album first. Go press play and immerse yourself in its universe, cause the universe is within you…

Words from the PR Wire:

"Descending from Norway armed with the twin hammers of riff and groove, Forgotten King are the heralds of a heady, heavy trip into the cosmos. What began as the solo project of Kal-El guitarist Azul Josh morphed into a band, and the crew are poised to lay waste to the heavy underground with their brand of euphoric, crushingly weighted psychedelia, stoner, and doom.

Their debut LP “The Seeker” lands September 6 on Majestic Mountain Records, and makes good on Forgotten King’s promise of gargantuan riffs and rapturous atmospherics. The band roll through six tracks of burly, quaking doom that delivers head-nodding grooves alongside heavy doses of melancholy psychedelia, creating a moving journey crowned by Azul Josh’s soaring vocals. Hulking yet emotive, “The Seeker” is on a riff-filled quest of epic proportions."

The bands own words:

"Forgotten King is a Psychedelic Stoner Doom project from Norway which started as a solo project by Azul (Kal-El). His music tells a story about ego, mental illness, and spirituality through heavy distorted tunes and fuzzed out riffs while drawing inspiration from all that is life. The universe is us and we are the Universe.""

Forgotten King – The Seeker

Forgotten King – The Seeker
Majestic Mountain Records – 2024
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Metal
Rated: ****

Here we are again, professing how much we were honored for the fact that we were allowed to premiere the first single Lost back in July. And we are even more proud of the fact that tomorrow we are asked to do the same for the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE of Forgotten King’s debut album The Seeker. Out on Majestic Mountain Records on Friday the 6th, you can hear the full album a day early on Stoner HiVe! And what an album, The Seeker opens with the ruddy, high viscose and shadow dappled stoner rhythmic Deadbeat. Immediately striking a chord in the heart of every heavy rock loving fiend, for the nod is huge and the doom rides the groove like there’s no tomorrow. It's blues infatuation seems to steer this track forward and moves at a different, read minutely faster, speed than the rest of the album. For most of it is set in the more contemplative, doom and sluggish tempo. Although there’s always third track Around The Corner as well, which moves at a similar pace. The shortest song on the album, barrels down the middle of stoner highway, and seems to serve as the setup for dragging, slower doom that fills the rest of the album. The ten minute long Drag is as introspective as it is atmospheric, building that surrounding wall that seems to grow larger and larger, looming over you like a gargantuan tower about to topple. The shadow that swells to gargantuan proportions, aided by harsh vocals almost starts to swallow you whole. And somewhere in the middle of all that came before you have a track like Sun, slowly setting up this labyrinthian scene where its easy for you to let lost. Cloudy and turbid, the different parts seems to shift and change within itself, leading you ever further down the rabbit hole. Where only closing track The Watcher awaits. Open and inviting, the solemn and foggy intro is no less mysterious and as the vocals spin its tale the movement comes in, turning the track slowly towards the arc, the edge, ever more towards the edge. And then you realize it has passed like a sudden hurtling-down. And you will feel touched, art is thought, but sometimes you can feel more if you listen to it sideways and in doing so find out as much about what’s inside you...

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - Black Capricorn - Sacrifice Darkness and ... Fire

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Black Capricorn - Sacrifice Darkness and ... Fire

You’ve drawn the pentagram on the floor, lit the candles and are now waiting for the ritual to commence. You feel the air grow thicker, the surrounding shadows grow larger and the burn in your lungs means something behind you is waiting for the right moment to show itself. So, here we are, for the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE of Black Capricorn’s new album Sacrifice Darkness and ... Fire, which will arrive tomorrow on Friday 12th  through Majestic Mountain Records. We wrote a few words about it on Wednesday, you can read them HERE, but all you doom worshippers really need to do, is press play… See you on the other side…

Words from the PR wire:

Italy's modern titans of doom rise once again, as the coven of scuzzy, occult psychedelia that is Black Capricorn are proud to present their epic new album "Sacrifice Darkness ... and Fire", out July 12 through Majestic Mountain Records. Following their lead singles and music videos "Sacrifice" and "A New Day Rising", the three-piece now unveil their seventh album in all its wicked glory.

As befits the title, Black Capricorn dive dark and deep on the LP, fully embracing the occult side of their signature doom to deliver eight tracks oozing with atmosphere. The journey is a winding one, dreamily wandering through the lysergic hypnosis of cuts like "The Moon Rises As The Immortals Gather", and raging with the thunderous, quaking stomp of "Queen Zabo" and "Electric Night". Rachela, Virginia, and Fabrizio are fully dug in on "Sacrifice Darkness ... and Fire", honing their craft ever further as they invite listeners on a psychedelic odyssey of dark magick rites and undeniable grooves.

"Majestic Mountain Records believed in us once again and we are thrilled to announce the new album, the second released by the rec label and the seventh of our career. We can't wait to start this new adventure and to spread the word!"

Black Capricorn - Sacrifice Darkness and ... Fire
Majestic Mountain Records – 2024
Rock, Doom, Occult
Rated: ****

We’re honored to bring you the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE of the new Black Capricorn album Sacrifice Darkness and ... Fire! But not right now. Ho ho! It will be here this Thursday! So come back then. But to entice you to do so, here are a few words that felt fitting, words that popped up while we had the album on repeat since finding it waiting for us after our return from our holiday in Spain. Sacrifice Darkness and ... Fire, feels like the moon went out in the middle of the night, like the amount of sacrifices multiplied and the darkness doubled, when they fired up the old recording machine. Ritualistic by default, the eight tracks on the new album are muggy and stifling. It seems to suck the oxygen out of the air and with many an unwavering riff the sound often seems to drift up from the bottom of some ominous pit, and o’ how bass, guitar and drums melt together in one glorious mess. For forty-three minutes the Italian three push the envelope when it comes to cauldron bubbling occult doom rock. Or rock, it’s metal. The ancient kind, the metal that came crawling out of the tomb after Sabbath had lured it in. Eight tracks that are like the perfect incantation, hymns for the wicked and the vile, and for the season of evil to commence. And from every tone and melody you learn that Black Capricorn has grown, making it all sound effortless. Small and yet so big, everything has improved so much since their earlier release you cannot help but wander… Did the ritual work?

And you can already check out two singles right now. And you should come back on Thursday to hear the full Sacrifice Darkness and ... Fire album, the new on by Black Capricorn soon to be released on Majestic Mountain Records. If only so you can judge for yourself… Buy some candles… We’ve got a ritual to perform next Thursday!

Full Album Premiere – Void Commander – Alien Queen

Full Album Premiere

Void Commander – Alien Queen

Yes! This is awesome! So great to see so many of you, so great that all of you set your alarm so early and sit barely dressed behind the computer with your first coffee so you can listen to the new Void Commander album! It’s called Alien Queen and will be out tomorrow through Majestic Mountain Records and Interstellar Smoke Records. But you can hear it here, on Stoner HiVe a day early! And I totally understand all of you! It’s something you need to hear… And not just because you read that glowing review on Stoner HiVe two days ago. It’s because you know Void Commander, you know their rootsy vibe, their proto love, that blues that motors the soul. Diesel blues personified! You can read more of what we wrote by scrolling down or clicking HERE. But most of all, press play on the player below and start your day off properly! It’s Void Commander and Alien Queen is the fuel for the ride of your lifetime!

From the PR Wire:

Sweden’s history of top-notch stoner rock is a well known one, and the latest addition to the country’s legacy is trio Void Commander’s new album, “Alien Queen”. Their third album, the band dig ever deeper into their blues and classic rock sound, creating a hazy, cosmic journey that drifts and drawls just right. If Creedence Clearwater Revival time traveled to the future, got their hands on some extra fuzzy pedas, and lit up with All Them Witches, Void Commander would emerge from the smoke, harmonicas held high. From the throbbing low-end groove of “To The Grave” to the laidback, tasty southern blues of “Sweet Depression”, Void Commander navigate their breadth of sound on “Alien Queen” locked-in and wholly committed to the sonic world they’ve created. Retro yet pushing their craft ever further, the band have created an album that oozes an easy confidence and undeniable identity front to back. Void Commander arrive on their flying saucer from the past to plant their flag in the murky stoner of today. Their latest and final single, “Sweet Depression”, is out now, and the full album “Alien Queen” lands June 7.

IN THE BAND'S OWN WORDS:

“Inspired by the mystique of space travels intertwined with the enigmatic allure of witchcraft and occultism, Alien Queen is more than just an album; it's an expedition across the sonic universe, designed for those who dare to explore the edges of Stoner Metal and Hard Rock.

Dive into the cosmic depths with Void Commander as we unveil our latest creation, Alien Queen. This stellar journey is brought to you by the combined forces of Majestic Mountain Records and Interstellar Smoke Label, ensuring an otherworldly auditory experience.”

We were honored to premiere their fourth single Sweet Depression from the Alien Queen album to be released on June 7th. We’re talking about that wild and feverish Void Commander trio out of Karlskrona, Sweden. It will arrive through a duo of great labels, namely Majestic Mountain Records and Interstellar Smoke Records and sports no less than seven tracks and forty two minutes of great and classic rock. They’re celebrating their tenth year of existence and do so by trucking through as much of the roots of rock as they can possibly do. This is hardrock, diesel blues, stonerized and doom touched. This is that proto love, the seventies edge and everything classic you can think of. Opening track To The Grave starts out as gritty and as doom as they can before turning that blues corner. They do circle back to that doom once fourth track Bloodred Knight Alright rolls around. That stays in that doom circle, until it suddenly all bluesy and jazz, jams away from the dark and dances off into the distant light. And that’s where title track Alien Queen is waiting. Cause even though there is a doomy edge here, Alien Queen is allowed to head off into that proto direction. With a beautiful and soulful harmonica freak out, that curls into this wonderful little pocket to get lost in, right there in the middle of that track that could easily into a majestic jam during a live show. Which is definitely another word you can feel throughout the album, jam. And not just because the sixth track is called Jam In C. You often feel a lot of this record was born out of jam, without any edit, just re-recorded because it immediately felt good. And that’s where everything the Alien Queen record does goes, to that lovely feeling. There is no real darkness here or depression, it’s all framed by sweetness and something glowing. That ending guitar work on Jam In C, grooving on such a warm and intense ebb and flow, sliding over all your marrow and bone. The Night Took My Name ends the album in fine form, a perfect capture of one of those feelings you might have after one of those memorable nights, with vocals that will force you to surrender to the Void Commander sound. And after listening to all that, there might still be a bonus track, that might only be available on the vinyl soon to be released. And after listening to all that there are so many moments when you find it’s hard to believe that this trio does not have a Southern American city as birthplace listed in their passport. So much blues, so honest so pure. Sometimes Mississippi oriented, sometimes more Texas, mixed with so much spicy soulful rock and always unpolished, untamed, raw and jam adorned. It isn’t all blues and roots, but it is always there. And that simple fact makes Alien Queen an album that feels like already stood the test of time and will live on into legend…

And guess what… We’re honored to bring you that legend first with a FULL ALBUM PREMIERE on Thursday the 6th! Esben Willems – Glowing Darkness

Esben Willems – Glowing Darkness
Majestic Mountain Records – 2024
Rock, Punk, Alternative
Rated: ***

You might know him from his amazing drum work for Monolord. The guest spots he delivered over there years on various albums. Or from bands like Marulk and Slower. You might know him from all that mix and master brilliance he delivers through his Studio Berserk for a varied array of bands. Or you might know him from all those fun, cool, weird and coffee pictures he shares on various social media platforms. He’s around and that’s a good thing, for Esben Willems seems to be an honest and pure seeker of goodness and good music! And on Glowing Darkness we are treated to his very first solo album, totally and completely done himself, and delivered as a search through the treasure trove of all sorts of song ideas that had been lying around and he desperately wanted to record. And that’s a good thing. Often rudimentary, often jagged and choppy, the nine tracks move from personal insights to world views and across an eclectic mix of influences. Never needing to go to the Monolord sound or even stonerrock or doom. Even though there are slight touches and moments where he traipses around those genres. Not suffering from a scourge of mildness, there is a different form of extreme here, the extreme need to follow one’s instinct. And that means you can hear what Mr. Willems is thinking across dark themed music or surprisingly airy melodies. Title track Glowing Darkness perhaps being the prime example of this. Or the acoustic Fortune Teller, which makes Mr. Willems go full singer songwriter and is delivered with such finesse it makes you believe he’s a born story teller that could easily write a multitude of mini novels for this kind of music. He might have thought he needed to close the album off with a heavier tune and tone, for Across The Everything has that building vibe, which will give rise to your anticipation of something more Monolord touched, but instead it goes into the alternative nineties and stoner sound. ‘I’m Coming Home’, he sings, but from everything you heard throughout the record one must believe Mr. Willems was always home, comfortable and at ease. Showing off his eclectic interests and his righteous search for the good stuff… Out today, happy release day to the honorable Mr. Willems!
