Restless Spirit – The Fatalist (feat. Wino)

Restless Spirit – The Fatalist (feat. Wino)

Restless Spirit have released their new single for upcoming album Afterimage. It’s called The Fatalist and features nonother than the honorable Wino! The album will be out October 6th and feels like you will be whipped into an electrifying frenzy! 38 minutes of metal fury! And The Fatalist serves as a righteous taster! Drink in!

“Long Island sludge metal trio Restless Spirit have released the third and final advance single 'The Fatalist', which features legendary SAINT VITUS and THE OBSESSED frontman Scott "Wino" Weinrich on guest guitar. The track is taken from Restless Spirit's forthcoming third album "Afterimage", which is scheduled for release on October 6, 2023 via Magnetic Eye Records.”

Restless Spirit talk about 'The Fatalist': "Growing up, I found this incredible band called The Obsessed and they changed my life", guitarist and singer Paul Aloisio reveals. "I tried for years to copy, steal and emulate Wino's legendary wailing guitar solos. Sadly to no avail... there's only one Wino, after all. Later on, after befriending the legend himself, we approached him to play on a song for this album. The idea to trade dueling guitar solos with Wino is a dream come true, and 17-year-old me would be freaking out if he knew about this happening. As a 32-year-old, I'm still freaking out. It's a heavy, introspective song that delves further into the dealings of grief and loss. At the same time, it’s a headbanger for sure. We wanted to find a good balance between rocking and real life experience, and I think we did. Not just on this song specifically, but on the entire album.”

Number 14

Number 14

We jump almost twenty-five points from Electric Wizard on Number 15 to reach the Number 14 spot of the 2017 Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. An album that made it to the Number One spot of the Doom Charts back in March. But the band never made it unto the Countdown before, due to the fact that it is their first album in over twenty years time. “The mythos returns with this fantastic new milestone. The album is an extensive musical journey that spans time through all eras of this iconic band as the past, present, and future meld into one massive, cohesive musical statement. The first truly valid contender for Best Album Of 2017 has arrived!” Master Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker (Taste Nation) wrote as a blurb. And righteously so!  Moving much more into the old-school metal and punk approach their doom always contained, it has so much groove, so many memorable riffs and so much personality it is a sacred record in every sense of the word. And it is this kind of personality we all need be obsessed with!

The Doom Chart For June 2017

Doom Chart

“Listen, are we helpless? Are we doomed to do it again and again and again? Have we no choice but to play the Phoenix in an unending sequence of rise and fall? Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, Greece, Carthage, Rome, the Empires of Charlemagne and the Turk: Ground to dust and plowed with salt. Spain, France, Britain, America—burned into the oblivion of the centuries. And again and again and again. Are we doomed to it, Lord, chained to the pendulum of our own mad clockwork, helpless to halt its swing? This time, it will swing us clean to oblivion.”

    – Walter M. Miller, Jr. (A Canticle for Leibowitz, 1959)

Welcome to the soundtrack to the apocalypse.  This is Doom Charts, a collaboration of bloggers and broadcasters who have their ears to the ground listening for the latest and the best in heavy music from the cursed earth.   While it is indeed July as I pen these words, this is a good time to remind you that The Doom Chart always looks back to the previous month of listening activity, giving you a window into the vibrant world of doom metal and stoner rock, with every imaginable variation.

Overall, we had a robust array of submissions from our panel of critics for the June chart — over 200 unique albums chosen among the lot of us.  Following is the consensus list of the critics’ picks, over half of which are making their Doom Charts debut.  At the same time, we say goodbye to long-time chart dominators Goya and The Obsessed.  Will Elder, Geezer, and Telekinetic Yeti hold their positions as tenaciously in the months ahead?   We shall see.

It is worth noting that for this go-round, we have our first “tie” since the Doom Charts inception, with Pyreship and Medusa1975 vying for the 25th spot to begin the countdown.  Also, we welcome the return of Demon Head after taking a month off from the charts.  Now, grab a good spot to watch the world burn, as we bring you the June edition of Doom Charts!

Goatsnake – Black Age Blues

Goatsnake – Black Age Blues
Southern Lord – 2015
Rock, Doom, Metal, Stoner
Rated: *****

After fifteen years we finally see the return of the holy Goatsnake with their third album Black Age Blues. Ofcourse, the fans were present at their first reunion gig on Roadburn 2010 in Tilburg, which may have spawned the true resurrection of the band. Cause after the show all of us started praying for a follow-up to the amazing Goatsnake I from 1999 and Flower Of Disease released in 2000. With Sourvein-bassist Scott Renner as new blood in the formation and with original drummer Greg Rogers (The Obsessed) back on the force we are finally there. Guitar fiend Greg Anderson (Sunn0)))) punches out the most magical riffs and rattles, churns and flutters as he delivers his wizardry without every pushing himself into too much of a leading role. It seems that this part was reserved for vocalist Pete Stahl (Scream, Earthlings?) who expertly surfs across all that we hear. And everything that was intended with this record seems to come to a head on the Grandpa Jones track, just as catchy as the rest of the album, with perfect vocals and stomping drums, it delivers exactly what they wanted and what we needed: blues for the dark dark days…
