No Man’s Valley - Chrononaut Cocktailbar / Flight of the Sloths

No Man’s Valley - Chrononaut Cocktailbar / Flight of the Sloths
Tonzonen Records – 2024
Rock, Psych, Blues
Rated: *****

Chrononaut Cocktailbar / Flight of the Sloths is the third No Man’s Valley album and also the third album we have some Free Bandcamp Codes for. A double edge sword, two sides of an awesome vinyl coin. One side filled with short, quirky, rock noir and highly atmospheric songs. While the other side is filled with one long psychedelic, ever flowing, ever floating adventure… And all of it is brilliant! Two mini albums in one, said Jasper Hesselink, the incredibly talented vocalist of No Man’s Valley. Those shorter songs, all with a desperate groov and swing, have the ability to rock you with this estranged dark and noir atmosphere. And then there’s Flight Of The Sloths, a no holds barred adventure and exploration of the space and psych rock realm. Almost twenty minutes long they crawl and float through sky, that slowly transforms from peaceful blue into a tempestuous squall. Beautiful! (Just like that awesome video for it!) But personally I’m so much in love with those shorter songs with their eccentric experiences and goosebump shivers. Those first three songs for instance, they change color and style with no reserve, yet through an overarching atmosphere, all feel like one beautiful circus tent ring. An ouroboros of crazy images, funny ideas and scary characters.

No Man’s Valley – Outside The Dream

No Man’s Valley – Outside The Dream
Tonzonen Records – 2019
Rock, Psych, Blues
Rated: *****

And yes, we also have Free Bandcamp Codes for the No Man’s Valley sophomore album Outside The Dream. An album released through Tonzonen Records back in 2019 and which we reviewed back then and you can read it in full HERE. But to save you the trouble of clicking on that link, here’s the gist of it! “We’ve been spinning the shit out of it for the past months, slowly getting more immersed in the dream. Slowly losing all sense of the outside world. ‘Psychedelic blues infused organ wave rock’, quite a lovely description by the band itself. But it has so much more! It aims for the stratosphere with certain elements without ever becoming too spacey and it surges through all kinds of nooks and crannies to serve up an entirely own universe. A heavy and thick universe with depth and width. The atmosphere is so compelling, it transports you to ringside seats at a twisted carnival or will have you trapped inside a tin can that might be floating around in outer space or deep beneath the ocean. Who knows? It might just all be a dream. It is without a doubt based on the blues rock of yore and the psychedelic transformation that happened in the seventies.” And Outside The Dream still manages to do just that listening now, five years later. In fact, it reminds us we should listen to it on a regular basis…

No Man’s Valley – Time Travel

No Man’s Valley – Time Travel
Nasoni Records / Self-released – 2016
Rock, Alternative, Blues, Psych
Rated: ****

An album from 2016? Yes, and why not! After all we’re here to promote all that good stuff that’s floating around the Heavy Underground. And what better way to promote those albums then by handing out some FREE BANDCAMP CODES. Yes! For Jasper Hesselink, founder of the Weirdo Shrine, one-time member of the Doom Charts and more importantly vocalist for No Man’s Valley graced us with a handful of codes to distribute for their debut full-sized album Time Travel! The vinyl was released through Nasoni Records; everything else they handled themselves. Roots, blues and noir rock are soon complimented by all sorts of psych and alternative rock. Mesmerizing and conjuring up mystical whisperings, the eight tracks on this album take you on an adventure that always feels like a risky venture. A bit of a gamble. Danger lurking around every corner. Wild organ touches, luscious guitar work and brilliant drums all add to this slightly sinister and dark alley atmosphere. And of course them vocals from Hesselink himself, highly varied, opting for a Morrison approach here, Danzig there or even a bit of Cave. A stunning debut: and one that will surely stand the test of time… And will probably even get better with age…

Brotherhood of Peace – Cuttin’ Loose

Brotherhood of Peace – Cuttin’ Loose
RidingEasy Records – 2023
Rock, Hardrock, Classic, Southern, Pop
Rated: ****

RidingEasy Records is another one of those labels that know how to unearth those lost treasures of the past. They know how to reissue all those classic rock gems of yore and with that Brotherhood of Peace album from 1976 they struck gold! Again! Cuttin’ Loose was originally released through the Avanti label but perhaps never got the attention it deserved. And to be honest, perhaps it slid underneath the radar a bit last year once again. Cause it’s been out for a year and is one hell of a sunny sounding classic rock album. Lyrically perhaps not always that lighthearted, but musically it’s entire sun-dappled and breezy. Perfect for a budding spring or a summer in heat. It’s highly eclectic and moves from classic sounding hardrock to more southern touched rocking to something more a kin to power pop. Highly soulful, sometimes even funky and danceable. Brotherhood of Peace was at the time of recording bass player Mike Arrington also delivering vocals, on drums Ronnie Smith also some vocals and on guitar and responsible for most of the compositions and vocals Dennis Tolbert. Highly varied, but also with that classic rock attitude as an undercurrent as is his guitar playing. Songs that remind of Led Zeppelin or more Lynyrd Skynyrd. Grand Funk Railroad is there. Deep Purple, Nazareth and even some that hint of The Beatles or even Tom Jones. It’s all there! And you would think these cats could have had a bigger day in the sun. And there’s Before The Dawn, which is such a huge track, opting for gigantic gestures, but still a bit too grainy on this release. Might need a bit more cleaning for the next reissue? On the other hand, this does give it that extra vintage touch and that faded photography quality. An amazing record, start to finish! The only reason we’re not giving this reissue a full five stars, is the fact that they might have included one or two of those singles they put out before this one and only full album. I mean we still have room for some ten minutes left on the vinyl. And the band name was originally the title of their first song… Would have been amazing to have that include… Now, let’s hope the summer starts soon, so I can put this album on repeat… Or at least the amazing Holiday!

REZN & Vinnum Sabbathi – Silent Future - Bandcamp Listening Party

REZN & Vinnum Sabbathi – Silent Future

Straight from the one of the guys behind the album, the cool Roman Tamayo we got this message:

"
Tomorrow there's a listening party on Bandcamp to celebrate the release of "silent future." The members of Rezn and Vinnum Sabbathi will be live chatting.

We would really love for you to join us at this party.

August 11!

Friday at 12pm (Chicago) / 11 am (Mexico).

Link: https://rezzzn.bandcamp.com/merch/silent-future-listening-party "

"... We get seven intense tracks that feel as expansive, cinematic, and forceful as anything Vinnum Sabbathi might produce and as atmospheric, post rocking, psychedelic and wild as REZN’s, only a few months old, own album Solace. There’s such beauty and honesty at work here, that there’s no other word for this than: art. The two bands manage to weave an intricate and extremely detailed psychedelic tapestry that feels like you are on a majestic adventure into the outer reaches of everything. For this isn’t just a cosmic trip, there’s something that seems to focus on hyper reality. Complex, yet highly transparent, the merging of both worlds begins with Unknown Ancestor right after opening intro Born Into Catatonia...."

If you don't know which album this is... We wrote much more!

Actually, we've been raving about it for a while now...

And you can read all of it HERE!

King Fossil – King Fossil

King Fossil – King Fossil
Self released – 2022
Metal, Prog, Stoner, Alternative
Rated: ***

And older one, but a good one and one we can offer a few Bandcamp codes for. It’s King Fossil from lovely Canberra, Australia! And King Fossil delivers passionate, alternative metal. We get five tracks on their debut release, and they all deliver some off-center metal by way of progressive rock. And yes, there’s definitely some stoner influence and grunge to perceive as well. The thundering sound, often nineties reminiscent and then suddenly bouncing off a funkier approach or a more skater punk style, is able to boom tricky rhythms and opts for epic gestures. And even though the production and mix could use a little more precision and heaviness, the five tracks soon find a way into your heart. In a similar way River Runs Red did back in 1993. Not that I’m comparing the King Fossil album to that of Life Of Agony; but for some weird and possibly insane reason, I often drifted back to that era while listening to King Fossil. Far from lighthearted it does often feel playful, and that might be the best aspect of it all…

Bandcamp Codes - Lamassu – Made of Dust

We wrote a few words about Made Of Dust by Lamassu at the end of June and we are still spinning the shit out of it. We wrote something along the lines of this: "In all you get 1 hour and 8 minutes full of intense grunge, stonerrock, alternative rock and all with this doom inspired toning. Heavy on all fronts. Listening to the album, you can’t forgo the definite influences of both Soundgarden and Jerry Cantrell, in phrasing, color and rhythm choices."

And we ended that little screed with these few lines: “…cause even though the overall sound, is dark, compact, sorrowful, and introspective. The most surprising part of the album is perhaps the fact that this more than an hour long heavy and intense record, has me returning to it over and over again, longing to submerge myself in this world of dust…”

You can read the rest HERE…

And you can start listening over and over again yourself, cause thanks to Lamassu, we have a handful of Bandcamp Codes to give away…

Maragda – The Reckless / Evil Seed

Maragda – The Reckless / Evil Seed
Spinda Records / Nafra Records – 2023
Rock, Prog, Psych, Garage, Stoner
Rated: ****

I thought something might be wrong with my socials. For when I went to look for the Facebook page for Maragda, to put as a link underneath these few words about their latest single The Reckless / Evil Seed, it looked like they only had 85 followers?!? That is simply not possible! And then we found out they lost control of their earlier page… So, everyone out there, visit their page and give them some love! Cause everyone I know fell in love with their self-titled progressive and psychedelic masterpiece from 2021. We wrote quite some words about it, which you can read here. Or you can just continue reading up about The Reckless / Evil Seed, cause we’re already pretty late writing this one up. For they released these two tracks early June. But as you know, there’s so much great stuff released on a daily basis, we can’t cover it all, or on time. We simply try to do our best. And so does the trio from the Barcelona area in Spain called Maragda. The Reckless starts the single, it’s a rush forward, a smash ‘n grab beginning that reminds of metal love, speeds like garage and glides like a psychedelic smoke swirl. Especially that guitar, furiously riffing when it all begins and after a while wailing out, wilding away and going all out freak. Sublime stuff! Evil Seed continues this two-track single’s enchanting beauty, the vocal melodies and the harmonies really stand out on this one. Grungier, this track bounces back from all the walls around you and give it that rounded atmosphere. Something they also excelled at on their self-titled album. Choppier drums, floating vocals, throbbing bass work and electrifying guitar, Evil Seed gives you all you need. And these two tracks do give you two sides of Maragda, both of them adding to the kaleidoscopic poetry of these three individuals. Delightful and it once again warrants everyone falling in love with Maragda…

The Amblers – Shallow Pools (Deluxe Edition)

Out since September 2022, on Lay Bare Recordings and Mongrel Records, the Shallow Pools (Deluxe Edition) album by South African blues rockers The Amblers. The kind of blues that feels filthy, sounds dirty and you feel coursing through your entire body like high voltage electricity. Eleven fuzz ridden blues rockers that move towards The Black Keys or Jon Spencer as easily as they do towards something Jack White. Indeed, this is a duo, that knows how to implement that vintage garage touch as well as some punk adagio, just listen to Keep Me Screaming or Dustling Man. Want some more laid-back stuff with folk touches? They can do that too, just check the title track out!  Shallow Pools has been out since September 2022, but is an album that feels perfect for a hot and sweaty summer… And in a perfect world you would see The Amblers featured on a lot of festivals… I would attend them all!

Demons of Noon – Sphere of Peace

Demons of Noon – Sphere of Peace
Self released – 2022
Doom, Metal, Occult, Sludge
Rated: ***

We’re just here to quickly spread the word about a New Zealand cult doom band called Demons of Noon. And perhaps share a few bandcamp codes as well... Who knows, right? They released their first three track EP called The Summoning back in 2020 and released the single that’s been on heavy rotation today around October 2022. It’s called Sphere of Peace; and feels like a sludgy doom incantation to dispel wraiths and specters. They produce a colossal and big stomp, accompanied by gnarly guttural vocals, in a unison of four males and one angel. Although that angelic voice turns into high pitched ethereal screeches that might burst a glass or two at loud volume. And those harmonies do make this something different and adds to the occult touch. A monstrous black metal touch lurks just beneath the surface; and the fact that they manage to keep it under control is another feat that makes Demons of Noon deserve every bit of daylight they can handle. And more... Cause we can't wait to here more...

Deer Lord - Witches Brew/Psychedelic Roadkill

Deer Lord - Witches Brew/Psychedelic Roadkill
Self released – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Psych, Acid, Metal
Rated: ****

And here we are, on April 1st, 2023. And there is no mistake, no joke or tomfoolery at play here, we are mentioning this two track single from trio Deer Lord that they released in October 2022. Multiple reasons for this, in fact at least four, and we could of course also just mention their awesome Dark Matter Pt.1 album, which they put out in January 2023, and which was featured as a Friday Freebie post for the Doom Charts as well as the Number 10 spot of the February Doom Charts. And Dark Matter Pt.1 deserves every bit of recognition and more. Six psychedelic doom ‘n roll tracks that do a lot of motoring, stoner trucking and give you that sweet, salty and sour taste that every sip of the electric kool-aid will give. And well, opening that album, are the two tracks on this single. So, why highlight that single and not the entire album you ask? Well, cause these good ol’ boys gave us a handful of codes for that two track single to hand out to you all. And Witches Brew is without any doubt the perfect opener for the single and album, with its haunting and ominous beginning sounds, the dark and twisted atmosphere, the bubbling, the rising vapors, those vocals doing the doom incantations and the slow proto approach to it all. And then, just past the half way mark, the start to speed up, add some boogie, some cowbell and whole lot of energy. Before letting it all take a more gloomy, hazy and disorienting turn, with its fade out towards the radio broadcast about LSD. Which carries over into the second road burning Psychedelic Roadkill track. Which sounds like a theme song for the one-percenters, the perfect soundtrack to a morning run, running fast and loud on the early morning freeway, low in the saddle, jamming crazy through traffic and ninety miles an hour down the center stripe, missing by inches… And thinking that the acid might be on the verge of taking hold… Deer Lord, a three headed supercharged beast, that knows how to motor and knows how to freak! And the Witches Brew/Psychedelic Roadkill single is a testament to that fact!

Starspawn of Cthulhu - The Cursed Vision

Starspawn of Cthulhu - The Cursed Vision
Self released – 2023
Metal, Doom
Rated: ***

We suddenly realized we are actually in possession of all of the Starspawn of Cthulhu releases and then realized to our utter dismay and horror that we never got around to mentioning any of those four. Four, when you count the Electric Wizard cover Dunwich. We feel horrible and will try to make some sort of amends by at least talking about their newest one The Cursed Vision. Released at the end of January 2023, the album is yet another worthwhile chapter in the book of doom metal the Italian duo Starspawn of Cthulhu is composing. All their albums are based on tales by H.P. Lovecraft and this one focusses on the pain of individual characters from those stories. We submit to the doomed hallucinations for five tracks and almost thirty minutes, and immediately recognize the slumbering take on doom metal for what is it. A way to conjure those ancient horrors to the surface and reveal the pain they bestow upon those tormented individuals. The moments of respite, the opening of The Last Raft for instance, when the slow guitar ditty with its mediaeval touch offers some light and air. The guitar in Black Lotus, with the rising sound behind it, touching on a more gothic approach to doom. They all weave the elements needed to follow the characters through their ordeal. And those vocals, that almost recite, like an elderly town crier, causes the doom metal to almost feel like dangerous whispers in the dark. For lovers Cthulhuism a must hear doom metal tale…

Ultracombo – Season II

Ultracombo – Season II
Self-released – 2022
Rock, Alternative, Stoner, Desert
Rated: ****

Yes, we reviewed this awesome little ditty when it appeared back around June of 2022. But this time around we've got a few codes for you all... So, why not give Season II a second time around the block! Cause it definitely deserves it. The first Ultracombo release entitled Season 1 was released some two years ago and Reek of STOOM desperately wanted to write a few words about it back then. He begged and begged and then went on to write a riveting review about it: “Five tracks of fervent Stoner that bring the heat, the sweat and the flies of Sonora to your ears and minds.” Was one of the sentences the good man wrote back then. And it still seems to apply. Cause, the Italian five piece is back with Season II and it trucks further towards the end of the road. And that’s a good place to be, cause it just means that the road ends, and the desert begins! High on fuzz, high on energy and high on something extremely and maddening catchy. First single Follia was of course already out since March but hearing it full force with that crazy synth work after rough and raw opening stomper 12345 makes it even more danceable and exhilarating. And that extra edge of craziness continues on Umanotest, giving it an additional push with some krautrock reminiscent hypnotism. Specchio turns a slightly more normal page, opting for bigger gestures and instead of the pounce of the earlier three a more breezy approach to stoner, desert and alternative rock. A moment of respite perhaps before we go absolutely berserk, bonkers and barmy with closing freak out rocker La Fine! Ending Season II properly and with an absolute cliffhanger, cause we can’t wait to hear more from Ultracombo!
