Tony Maim’s – Personal Top 20

Tony Maim’s – Personal Top 20

As we mentioned before, the Stoner HiVe Team Members are all involved with the Doom Charts as well. So most of the personal lists already appeared there or will probably appear there in the near future. But we’re honored to be the first to post Madman Tony Maim’s Personal Top 20 first… Even though he might have posted the same one on his own Black Insect Laughter site… Hell, last year he even delivered a different one for the HiVe then the one for the Doom Charts, cause the HiVe, in his words back then: "has more latitude with the genres..." And we thank all the freaks in the HiVe for that! And we’re proud to have a list by the Madman, cause he has been active on his own Black Insect Laughter blog, been even more active with all his musical outlets like Guitars On Drugs of which Forbidden Place Records released a first CD called ‘Spies and Dub’ back in August of 2021. It’s the Madman Tony Maim; and he’s right, we’re wrong and the other way around. But when the Madman speaks, we listen!

Back from the Island…

Back from the Island…

We returned yesterday from a family visit on the British Island… Wish was amazing, even though we had to mess the best line-up of Desert Fest Antwerp ever and Dirty Sound Magnet that played a venue near my home town. But we returned just in time to wish our very own Reek Of STOOM a very happy birthday. But not in time to be able to post that Most Listened To Last Week post we just did, but normally do on Monday. Dominated ofcourse by Maragda and Redscale! Those two album we were so honored to be able to do an International Premiere for. Both albums are stunning and I hope all of your went over to the blog and pressed play and now know that we are not just going overboard with the accolades again but that they really and truly are amazing…

And because Madman Tony Maim suddenly fired up his Black Insect Laughter blog again, we immediately went and checked out the albums he posted about. Like that manic Kowloon Walled City about which he wrote: “Kowloon Walled City have carved out an impressive slab of hardcore/sludge/noise rock that is full of dirty, distorted tunes of disgust, regret and thoughtful anger. Feeling slightly less chaotic than past records, the band are not scared to strip away walls of noise to reveal passages of stark intensity which rely on vocals and picked guitar to set the scene before blasting out a barrage of atmospheric noise and aggression. Great production has melded the instruments into a massive force that sounds unstoppable - if there is any justice in this shitty world, this is a body of work that stands out in an overcrowded genre and which other bands will be measured against.” So go check it out! And check Black Insect Laughter blog out, cause the Madman has scribbled down some other mad ravings about other albums as well!

Guitars On Drugs – Fractured Thoughts

Guitars On Drugs – Fractured Thoughts
Self released – 2021
Rock, Punk, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ***

It’s a new release by the Madman! Yes, Tony Madman Maim’s, musical moniker as of 2020 is titled: Guitars On Drugs. Under that name the one man Madman operation has already released five recordings in 2020 and the first one of 2021 is called Fractured Thoughts. “Heavy guitars and riffs, pounding drums, snippets of movie clips, solos with fuzz turned up to 10 - all this matches the voices in my head that tell me nothing makes sense anymore!” Since the Madman has been fighting in the frontlines of the Covid pandemic and lives in the UK we can only agree to that statement; he knows the deal and knows how bad it got and still is on many levels. But even though the world around him seems to make less sense by the minute; his music does not. Perfectly synchronized, the drums, riffs, howling guitars and movie snippets tell you a moving requiem to a mind lost long ago. But don’t get that statement wrong; cause what takes center stage is without any doubt the pummeling drums, that perfect sounding copper in closing track Acid Shock and ofcourse the freakout guitars. Yes, those Guitars On Drugs!

Tony Maim’s – Personal Top 20

Tony Maim’s – Personal Top 20

The Stoner HiVe Team Members are all involved with the Doom Charts as well. So most of the personal lists already appeared there. But we’re reposting them here once again. Just because we like to keep things nice and tidy and up with the tradition… And here, on the HiVe we have a different one than Tony Madman Maim shared with the Doom Charts; cause the HiVe: "has more latitude with the genres..." And we thank all the freaks in the HiVe for that! And we’re proud to have a list by the Madman, cause he has been active on his own Black Insect Laughter blog, been even more active with all his musical outlets like Guitars On Drugs and has been fighting the battle against Covid on the forefront, the actual battleground… And doing all that and juggling a couple of shiny balls will make most everyone lose their minds…. But not the Madman! No, not the Madman!

Guitars On Drugs

"These are in alphabetical order – each time I play one of these albums I am struck by how good it is – a number cannot represent how music has helped me get through this year. Black Rainbows – Cosmic Ritual Supertrip

Black Rainbows – Cosmic Ritual Supertrip
Heavy Psych Sounds – 2020
Rock, Psych, Proto, Stoner, Seventies
Rated: *****

Just as with Geezer’s Groovy album, this one comes through Heavy Psych Sounds, and this one also starts with an absolute banger of an opener. At Midnight You Cry is stunning and it results in you knowing that the Italian Fuzz rockers that is Black Rainbows have done it again! Cosmic Ritual Supertrip turns out to be an amazing album and probably their best to date. And that is saying something of the band that released records such as Hawkdope and Stellar Prophecy. There’s a different kind of groove here, more electric and more grating, more punch and more smash ‘n grab. Fast paced and invigorating. Everything feels thick, dense and swirling. Like a cosmic maelstrom that turns solid fast and then drops out of the sky with a heavy pounce. And there is twelve tracks of this. And seriously, all of them have an amazing edge to them. High energy and a weight sound, man, this is gonna be on repeat for much of the summer. Sure, that opener is already freakishly good. But how about that more spacey and doomy approach on second track Universal Phase or absolute stoner car banger Radio 666. The sun is out, the window is open, the city is growing smaller in the rearview mirror, and we’re going straight to the devil!

And how about that Madman Tony Maim! He fired up his Black Insect Laughter and righteously wrote about his love for this album as well! A potential masterpiece Tony? It is a masterpiece!

Maim – Infected Songs

Maim – Infected Songs
Self released – 2020
Punk, Core, Sludge, Poetry
Rated:

Working in a hospital where Covid-19 has struck has had a profound effect on me. Deaths, anger, an invisible enemy and a government who has tried to destroy the NHS now calling us "heroes". This is the music in my head at the moment. Distortion and bitterness are the order of the day. This was recorded from April 2nd to 17th. It's not pretty but neither is my head state!Madman Tony Maim does the work and saves lives! He also writes for us and has decided to once again fire up his Black Insect Laughter blog.  We know him from other musical efforts like 3 Chord Propaganda and now there’s Maim. Not to be confused with the brutal death metal band from Sweden; Maim is the Madman and therefor only just as his nom de plume for these five tracks! This is not easy listening, it will not soothe you and it will not make the stay at home situation any easier. It will however give you something to screech along with and voice your anger. Madman Tony Maim is the sludge punk poet you can turn to for those twisted hours of need!

A few words of thanks…

A few posts of thanks…

A few final words of thanks… A few posts to thank all those bands out there that delivered all that awesome heavy music in 2019. We loved so much of it! It shows in the many different lists that were sent in for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. And not just that, it shows on the Doom Charts and on the personal lists that were posted on the HiVe and the Doom Charts. And ofcourse on all the personal pages of the Doom Charts Contributors; and those are many. Thanks to all that voted for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. Without you crazy music fiends the Countdown would not work and the heavy music scene would not be this alive! Many thanks! Keep your ears on that rumbling bass and those pounding drums; it will show you the way to those almighty riffs and majestic grooves!

Thanks to everyone out there who were involved with heavy music. Either by listening, making or voting for it. It is once again staggering to think about the sheer encompassing amount of great music! I’ve scrobbled 2004 albums. That’s digital scrobbles. Not counting vinyl or cd’s. Or those that were labelled wrong and did not scrobble at all. And I know the members of the Stoner HiVe Team have listened to a lot of different albums among themselves. And yes, I know there are still many on my to listen to list. There are many in the Stoner HiVe inbox and there are many on the different listening platforms provided by the record companies that are still waiting to be heard… Some of which  we will get to before January is over… There is just so much!

Thanks to all the Doom Chart Contributors, all wise in their own ways and all doing what they do for the pure love of it. Nobody is making one cent for doing this. It’s fuel is the love of the heavy stuff and the reward is seeing somebody finding an album they love because of that. And thanks to the Stoner HiVe Team. Doktor420 for remaining that immovable stalwart of stoner and space rock. He is very reluctant to do any writing for the HiVe but will forever be the original guru and has without a doubt the best ear for the unknown stoner, space, psych and kraut. Madman Tony Maim, has fired up his own Black Insect Laughter to some degree, giving us an insight to the monthly ruckus he listened to. Yes! He is there went you need a rant or two and he knows where to find the good punk, the great thrash and the lovely hardcore. We love the occasional and unprovoked burst of madness entering the HiVe inbox about a new album. And hope he will continue to do so. Reek of STOOM joined the team almost exactly a year ago! And has since then quickly climbed up to fill a void in all the sludge, doom and grime genres within the HiVe as well as the Doom Charts and Doomed and Stoned. A prolific listener that is unrivaled in the amount he listens to as well as the quality of his writing. And last addition Kyle aka Shastabeast. With us since September, the man seems to love the fuzz, the scruffy riffs and the dirty grooves as much as the doom of yore and the sludge of tomorrow. And if there is one animal that can find even more unknown heavy stoner gold than featured on the blogs, it’s Shastabeast

Thanks to you all for doing what you do and helping the HiVe give more attention to more bands! And because of that, we shall try to give a little bit of attention to some of that awesome stuff we missed during 2019 before normal broadcasting service shall commence… So, the next two weeks will be filled with posts featuring stuff that was released in 2019… After that we look forward and onwards, cause 20 20 is upon us! Thank you all! Let’s stay heavy!

The Madman’s Monthly Ruckus Round-up

The Madman’s Monthly Ruckus Round-up

As we almost enter August and we shall be treated to a new Doom Chart edition we look back to what Madman Tony Maim had to say about June! Cause as you might have gathered,  he fired up his Black Insect Laughter blog a bit… Once a month the Madman will put forth his choices of Punk and Hardcore releases that made him go: ‘fuck yeah!’. And that’s the most important reason we want to hear about new releases! So, head on over to Black Insect Laughter and read up on all that insanity from the past months before August starts damaging your ears! Fine picks indeed! The oi-punk of Boots On The Ground by Gutter Knife for instance. And when his quote reads: “Horrible old skool three chord three piece skate punk thrash band straight off the mean streets of South Wales UK. Been waiting a while for some new material and this does not let you down…” You know you need to check out Grand Relapse by Pizzatramp! O, and then he goes and mentions Helms Alee, which seems a bit odd between all those punk records; but it’s Helms Alee; and we love Helms Alee! So we can understand why the Madman chose to mention the new Notiluca by the majestic Helms Alee!

Hey… And while you’re there! Check out the Madman’s very own project 3 Chord Propaganda! He just released his DEad Poet TapesVol.1 and it’s filled with punk poetry and gritty grunge!

Triple Deke for instance and their skatepunk extravaganza called Five Minute Major! Or Tongues Of Fire; Sublime reminiscent post and pop punk. Check out their Everyone Hates Us release. Foxgrave play stupidly uplifting punk. Clean vocals sit on top of punk'roll songs to fantastic effect.” Indeed! Foxgrave! And their album is called Dichotomy!
