Urzah – II

Urzah – II
Self released – 2022
Rock, Post, Metal, Doom, Prog, Sludge
Rated: ****

It came out early 2022 and immediately made it to the 13th spot of the January Doom Charts. We are of course talking about Urzah and their second aptly titled EP: II. Two years earlier they released their first one and we were already damn right down with them. Down in the good sense of the word. Aggression and seething grit are still the overall emotions evoked; but with such a degree of high melodic energy that those emotions are ones of cathartic release. And why do we mention the EP, six months after it’s release… Well, it’s Friday! And even though that usually means we do a Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday session… Which we will do also… We also do a little Friday Freebie session. Cause this EP deserves to be heard by one and all… Or as Doom Oracle wrote back then on the January Doom Charts: “Fearlessly balanced between the overt rage and convulsive vehemence are some skillfully placed, surprisingly shimmering and elegant guitar passages which give way to chasmal, rumbling bass tones and ultimately propulsive percussion before being rounded out yet again with yet more expansive and riveting riffage. Urzah has pulled out all the stops on II and with these four tracks the Bristolian gents have truly succeeded in creating an ineffably enjoyable, fervently heavy ass listen. TLDR; Urzah’s II is legit. Turn it up, it’s heavy, aggro and loud. In all the best ways.

Urzah – Urzah

Urzah – Urzah
Self released – 2020
Rock, Metal, Sludge, Stoner
Rated: ****

Hailing from the dark and twisted streets of Bristol, UK comes Urzah. A four piece metal outfit that knows exactly how to implore those crusty tunes and take cues from the sludge and stoner landscape. The three tracks on their self-titled debut EP hit hard, hit heavy and will leave a dent on your brain and a hole in your heart. They are new masters of the massive sound, of the humongous energy and the titan gesture. There’s a tiny prog or post edge to it and that seems to make all the difference. At heart there is a lot of melody here, there is pure sense of dynamics and all that is delivered with a heavy, noisy and abundant sauce of aggression. And then that final track Allure Adrift; it comes on slow, and then zang! Wowzah! This new Urzah (new, cause their are a bunch of other outfits with the same name) does not only show promise, it shows you their colors, their character and their ability! They’ve got my vote!
