Backbone – Embracing Dissolution

Backbone – Embracing Dissolution
Self released – 2022
Metal, Ambient, Post, Atmospheric, Doom, Sludge
Rated: ***

Somewhere at the end of March, our head still spinning from the heavy Covid period we were coming out from, we found ourselves dissolving into the atmospheric doom metal of Polish quartet Backbone. Their new album Embracing Dissolution contains nine tracks that quickly creates a bleak and alienating ambiance. The nine tracks are often sludgy, sometimes black and always heavy. Even during the post metal, quieter and clean parts you can feel the danger and the severe burning underneath. But we forgot we had enjoyed the trip and had forgotten to mention it to you all. But thanks to our Doom Chart alliance; we are back on that Backbone adventure. For on the March 2022 Peroration post it was Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker who cried out about the album once again: “Post-metallic Doom infused Atmospheric Metal makes its way from Poland to the people of this planet and the results are phenomenal!” And he’s right on the money there. Growling Backbone delivers death inspired doom with a highly atmospheric twist. Dug it!

Mountain of Smoke – Imprinted

Mountain of Smoke – Imprinted
Self released – 2022
Metal, Doom, Sludge, Stoner, Punk, Noise
Rated: ****

“Bladerunner and Dark City are incredible movies.” Damn right, they are! Dark City has always been one of my favorite movies and by coincidence, (there is no such thing) I had been re-reading Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? recently. So; we knew we would enjoy this release when we noticed that one line on their bandcamp site… This power trio hails from Dallas, Texas and has been releasing music since 2016. We’re talking about those three amigo’s that go by the name of Mountain Of Smoke. You know them, Future Sins from 2019 made quite the splash. And releasing almost an album per year, counting their during the pandemic released covers album, they are already at their fifth imprint now called: Imprinted. Sorry, couldn’t resist. With the aid of a bunch of guests; they’ve churned out one hell of a hazy and noisy sludge metal adventure. Impressive are all those different added vocals for instance. It makes this album once again a special one. And one that builds a twisted tech inspired grand mountain of sound. Ten tracks that will pummel you into submission first and then seem to hypnotize. An album for the dark dreamers among us, the ones looking for the stuff behind the curtain…

Ealdor Bealu – Psychic Forms

Ealdor Bealu – Psychic Forms
Metal Assault Records – 2022
Rock, Prog, Atmospheric, Desert, Stoner, Psych
Rated: *****

The digital album materialized somewhere in February of this year and has been spinning ever since. Together with a few others it immediately charmed its way into my heart, mind, and soul. We’re talking about Ealdor Bealu’s third album Psychic Forms. Another one of those albums that manages to bring you all that heavy rock we all love so dearly… For, of late, the modern prog, ethereal psych and atmospheric metal albums have been abundant and many of them seem to have been produced right there at the crossroads; soul signed away for that perfect record. Are we now immediately stating the Boise, Idaho four sold their soul and that Psychic Formsis a perfect record? Hell no, but perhaps in all that imperfection hides humanity, that longing for something we cannot name and a heart-breaking tranquility. For even though the tracks on Psychic Forms have their explosive moments; their gut-wrenching dark twists and turns… It is the overall arc of tranquility, natural and even delicate atmospheres that seem to engage you the most while tangling with all the booming riffs, surging drums and intense bass work. And then they have all the different vocals parts not soaring above it all; but subdued, almost scurrying underneath to give even more air to all the progressive and folk inspired psychedelic compositions. From the already amazing second record Spirit Of The Lonely Places to this; is another definite step towards the top of the mountain… Where do we go from there? Shall we step to the edge? Shall we spread our wings? This album is sure to make you fly...

Death Denied – Through Waters, Through Flames

Death Denied – Through Waters, Through Flames
Sarcophagus Records – 2022
Metal, Southern, Stoner, Doom, Hardrock
Rated: ****

The first two tracks of Death Denied’s new album Through Waters, Through Flames definitely show some southern metal touches; but once third track Lesser Daemons hits you like the hot and heavy wave it is; you know the four from Death Denied have a knack for ear pleasing southern metal. A masterful groove and gilded guitar riffs straight out of some old Americana rock song and a sudden rise in temperature; to make sure all those Lesser Daemons feel welcome on earth and will dance some kind of dirty honky tonk dance with your wives and all your daughters. Through Waters, Through Flames is the third full-sized album by the four from Łódź, Poland and that is definitely audible. Highly accomplished guitar work, masterful drumming and righteous southern metal compositions. It’s all there and more; and in fact there is so much more that when yer finished with eight and half minutes closing battleship track, (There’s that damn saxophone!) Nocturnal you will immediately return to opening, chugging, doomy The Apostate Soul to re-start your ever deepening love for Death Denied. Cause yes, there’s no denying, you can call Death Denied for all your southern metal and groove needs… They’ve got plenty to go around! (O' and love that artwork by Maciej Kamuda!)

Crimson Tower – Aeternal Abyss

Crimson Tower – Aeternal Abyss
Morbid and Miserable Records – 2022
Doom, Metal, Proto, Classic
Rated: ***

Recorded in 2019 the album first saw daylight as CD version in September 2021 before being re-released in 2022 on Morbid And Miserable Records… Which means: it’s now available on Cassette tape. We’re talking about Aeternal Abyss by Brazil doom metal trio Crimson Tower. The atmosphere immediately turns into something old, forlorn and malevolent. For it’s dark, foggy and hazy when the three from Sao Paulo start rocking their heavy, classic and proto metal. All of the six tracks featured on the cassette version have a massive amount of doom spread out all over them. Gritty, filthy and with a sound, straight from the gothic underground. There shall be no light in the Crimson Tower and there shall be an abundance of incredible guitarwork. And if you are not one for Cassette Tapes, the CD version holds three bonus tracks. Although, those three demo versions of the three opening tracks add little or nothing to the selected excellent six on the cassette version…

Bomber – Nocturnal Creatures

Bomber – Nocturnal Creatures
Napalm Records – 2022
Rock, Hard, Metal, Seventies, Classic
Rated: ***

The 2017 EP Arrival heralded the… errr… Arrival of Swedish fourpiece Bomber. Four tracks that wore the love for seventies metal and eighties hardrock, and the other way around, on its sleeve and those feelings of affection and adoration are, we are happy to hear, abundantly present on their new album Nocturnal Creatures as well! Four demo tracks of this new record was all it took for Napalm Records to hear and sign these crazies; before the album was finished or a proper first meeting had been possible. The four Swedes show great fervour, ingenuity, and enthusiasm for all that heavy metal nostalgia from earlier decades. And even if those echoes from the past might sometimes call to close to home; it is done so incredibly well that there is simply no denying the fact that you are listening to four metal masters. Slowly the music, compositions and arrangements on Nocturnal Creatures move more towards the eighties and ever more towards the grandiose metal of that era; and the four come out on top, giving the metal heads longing for the over the top gestures; guitar work, drum fills and vocal choruses another album to love. Another band to adore! A Bomber patch will be loud, proud, beautiful and necessary for every battle jacket…

Stone Axe – Stay of Execution

Stone Axe – Stay of Execution
Ripple Music – 2022
Rock, Seventies, Classic, Blues, Psych, Proto, Stoner
Rated: ****

Out with the new, in with the old! It’s Stone Axe and a collection of tracks recorded in that short moment in time when Tony Reed and Dru Brinkerhoff where rocking out together under the Stone Axe name. And gleefully making the March Doom Charts! Classic rock, psychedelic blues, proto metal and even some southern touches here and there and all in absolute stunning form. It’s indeed a classic in every sense of the word and it’s impossible to choose a standout track of the eight present on this Stay Of Execution collection. Or as the honorable Bucky Brown stated on the Ripple Music bandcamp: “Stone Axe’s throwaway tracks are better than most bands greatest hits. Stay Of Execution is a perfect example.” We should give thanks to the Gods of yore (and Ripple Music) for delivering these ‘lost tracks’ on this Stay Of Execution slab of rock… Perhaps we should offer up an animal or two using a stone axe?

Temple of Deimos – Heading To Saint Reaper

Temple of Deimos – Heading To Saint Reaper
Self released – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Desert, Robot
Rated: ***

They hail from Genua, Italy. They’re with three, they made the March Doom Charts, reaching Number 16 and they’re called Temple Of Deimos. And we can be safely state that these four cats are a fan of everything Palm Desert. And as you probably know, so are we. Temple Of Deimos touch on what QOTSA did on those first three to four records. But making the weird weirder, the noise noisier and the chaos much more chaotic. Indeed, and it might be the answer to the question if Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Sorry, I’ve been re-reading that book.) Cause, where Josh Homme intended to move away from stoner rock towards something he dreamed to be Robot Rock; it seems Temple Of Deimos actually did. The ten tracks of Heading To Saint Reaper are an ode to the Palm Desert scene and to that dream of Robot Rock genre… It’s clunky, it’s ramshackle and it’s highly addictive! Even if there are moments where the riff reminds too much of a certain track; you tend to immediately forgive them, cause it’s so well executed…

World Wide Premiere – Seum – John Flag

World Wide Premiere – Seum – John Flag

Today is the day! The World Wide Premiere of the first single of the Blueberry Cash EP that comes out on April 20th. 4:20 it is! We’re talking about John Flag by Seum! One of the three songs that will feature on the Blueberry Cash EP. Two of which were written for Seum’s Winterized album but which didn’t seem to fit with the rest of the tracks and one song is from vocalist Gaspard’s former band Lord Humungus (Hairy Muff). It was mixed and mastered by Greg Dawson (BWC Studios - Sons of Otis, Panzerfaust) and illustrated by Burmese Grindcore artist Fadzee Tussock.

Lord Flag will pounce and pound and stamp and stomp you into submission with its gritty grind, severe sludge and uncompromisingly heavy two and half minute ruckus doom ‘n bass noise. Waving a tattered and torn death head flag there John?!

The Doom Chart For March 2022

Doom Charts

“Life is funny. If you don’t laugh, you’re in trouble.
    ~ Taylor Hawkins

Another rock ‘n roll legend gone. And if there’s ever a dude about which you can say, he was one of the good guys; it’s Mr Hawkins. May he rest in peace. Life is funny; it usually is. But sometimes the joke is too cruel, the punchline too awkward or the pain much too real. So, before we get in trouble, we better start laughing about something and we better start listening to some heavy music! Cause there is always solace in that!

Only two albums have carried over from the February 2022 edition of the
Doom Charts. Even though we’re all still spinning the shit out of KRYPTOGRAF, SLEEPWULF, FOSTERMOTHER and all those others. But the fact that there are so many new albums once again featured in the new March Doom Charts; is once again a testament to the immense amount of amazing records released every month. Cause the total amount of albums by bands that received votes this month reaches 261. Insane. 261 albums that according to the ones that voted for it deserved a spot on this month’s Doom Charts. No April Fool this time. Not the band or a joke, just a whole lot of heavy rock!

Personal votes went out to: Samavayo, Charley No Face, Red Eye, Mount Saturn, ZOM, Chivo and Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard... And Tomorrow we start another rundown of the entire charts with Number 30: Children of The Sün!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…
