Speedmobile – Supersonic Beat Commando

Speedmobile – Supersonic Beat Commando
V2/Butler – 2022
Rock, Speedrock, Punk, Garage, Billy, Rock ‘n Roll
Rated: ****

Hailing from Eindhoven, I of course have an enormous soft spot for Peter Pan Speedrock and all the bands that have one or more members from that formation in it. They were without any doubt the band that put the Rock, into Eindhoven Rockcity. And when Peter Pan Speedrock threw in the towel back in 2016, we knew the members of the three headed rock monster could not sit still for very long. Many outfits were born. TankZilla and Fire Horse, who recently delivered their damn fine Out Of The Ashes album featured Peter van Elderen. And when vocalist, guitarist Jeroen Haamers from Batmobile and the two Barts from Peter Pan Speedrock met up in 2018 to do something for the Lemmy tribute they immediately realized the three were a perfect fit, and Speedmobile was born. The debut release Supersonic Beat Commando features fifteen blood pumping, rollercoaster rides that leave you breathless and spitting fire. There’s no doubt we can hear Speedrock everywhere, there’s Motörhead love abundant, Fun Control for instance sounds like a homage to Ace Of Spades and with a track like JD (My Friend) you know what you are drinking and who is watching, with that legendary grin. The more psychobilly influences from Jeroen’s Batmobile are definitely audible as well, just check out Mmm Babalaba or Bang Bang Bang Bang. Repo Men is not the Iggy Pop song although it does definitely feel inspired by it. There is one cover though, the final song and rockabilly classic Train Kept A-Rollin, done in fine filthy form! As is the rest of the album, fast paced, high energy, and it all exhumes smoke, sweat and dubious whisky. And even though Peter Pan Speedrock might be playing one-off-gigs here and there; it will be Speedmobile you will see cruising down the highway, top down, smoking and drinking and grinning like Kilmister kings…

Fire Horse – Out Of The Ashes

Fire Horse – Out Of The Ashes
Suburban – 2022
Rock, Hard, Stoner, Seventies, Sixties Pop, Grunge
Rated: *****

Today we celebrate the release of Out Of The Ashes! And we also celebrate the bass player’s birthday! Three cheers and three hoorays! Or perhaps many more, for the album is a true blast! Have you already heard about the new powerhouse, super-power-trio on the block? They’re called Fire Horse! And have just delivered their debut album Out Of The Ashes. Super-power-trio we say, because they are comprised out of bass player (Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!) Peter van Elderen from Peter Pan Speedrock / Tankzilla, Kevin Stunnenberg from Birth Of Joy and Guy Pek from Grenadeers. If you did hear about this new power trio you probably already heard one of their singles: Against The World, Stormtrooper, Trust or the one from 2021, Fire Horse. Well, the album is full of more of that goody goody heaviness. We get hardrock, with minor psychedelic touches, we get stoner, with an angular stomp and gritty choppiness, we get sixties pop influences, and we get all of that on eleven wild tracks. Sure, most of the songs are hardrock, fast paced grunge, high energy, which move in a straight line, and power you through the landscape. But with sweet, yet edgy vocals that gives it all its very own character. But there are also Sabbath referencing songs, where even the vocals move towards Ozzy’s style and pitch, just listen to over 6 minutes long ninth track Situations. There are sixties pop melodies that are Beatlesque and harmonies like the Beach Boys, check out third track Against The World for that. Or do you wanna hear some stoner rock in the Palm Desert vein? Check out closer Keep It Coming! Than there are those little tidbits that just punch your memory card and makes your brain go crazy about what it reminds you of? Some Black Crowes here, some Queens of The Stone Age there, but above all, Fire Horse sound like a super-power-house-power-trio doing what they love and bringing that love to the heavy rocking masses! And there can be absolutely no doubt about that love when you listen to the song bearing the bands name, for during those four minutes that Fire Horse rocks, you hear blistering seventies guitar, vocals that just gallop their way into your brain, perfectly paced, and in beautiful control. Fire Horse, a pure-bred rock ‘n roll beast that will leave scorch marks on your heart with every stomp of their hoof!

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 artists listened to last week...

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 artists listened to last week...

After a month of only posts about the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown and all sorts of amazing albums from 2017 we are already one week into the new year. And of course we've been checking out some amazing new stuff. So, before we get cracking on all the new 2018 albums already out and soon to be released. We shall try to focus most of the remaining January months on the back catalogue that all deserves attention. And as we aim to do so, we listened some damn fine stuff.  What about the new cats from Eindhoven, that picked up the torch that Peter Pan Speedrock dropped when they quit. It's White Boy Wasted with their debut record The Dirty South Special out on Lighttown Fidelity. Speedrock, punk, hardcore and metal all mixed into a fastball of pure but filthy rock! Gypsy Sun Revival. Psychedelic rock that is both bluesy and spacey and will make you dream of the good times! Nasoni Records doing good stuff again! Mother Mars will captivate you with their interplanetary trip through the bluesy wastelands. On Lunar Highlands released through Pepper Shaker Records is big on fuzz, groove and Sabbathian doom. The re-release of Avon's Mad Marco album by Ozium Records will soon be mentioned, but for everyone who missed out the first time it was released, get it now. It's wild, wonderful and has an bonus track! And there is Stoned Therapists, who sound like they are continuing Queens Of The Stone Age songs we all know in a different way. Their self-released, self-titled album comes across as a different take on the Palm Desert, Rancho De La Luna songs. And we thank Frazer Jones and his magical Desert Psychlist for pointing us into their direction! So, onwards and upwards in 2018 and with already five damn fine record notches on our belt! Check'm out! Check'm all out!

Speedfest - The tenth edition

Speedfest 10

Peter Pan Speedrock’s very own housparty is on to it’s tenth edition. Every edition of Speedfest has been topping the one before in sheer brilliance, exhuberance and wild times. This one will surely be memorable once again. Not only because of what happened in Paris and the highly understandable fact that Eagles of Death Metal cancelled their headlining gig. Also because it is, the tenth edition. And on the bill we do find an amazing array of great bands. Such as Danko Jones, Crobot, High On Fire, Vintage Caravan, Death Alley, Voivod, Refused, Napalm Death, Nick Oliveri’s Mondo Generator and many many more. With great food, great beer and great music added to the great crowd there is no other option than to have a great time. Our thoughts will definitely be with the victims everywhere around the world of all the senseless violence everywhere and our beloved lovelies from Eagles of Death Metal, and every beer we drink and every laugh we have will be in honor of them! There are only a few tickets left… Get on them… And let’s party like crazy!

Peter Pan Speedrock – Buckle Up and Shove It!

Peter Pan Speedrock – Buckle Up and Shove It!
Suburban/SPV – 2014
Rock, Hard, Punk, Metal
Rated: ****

As the boys are also preparing to release a first effort with their new outlet Four Headed Dog; one could fear that their prime incarnation would suffer. Luckily; this is not the case. On Buckle Up and Shove It! their new album, the boys from Peter Pan Speedrock go for the gusto once again! Written and recorded in their new studio, which they build with their very own hands, the record is chuck full of raw and nasty heavy hitters. And they still do whatever they very well feel like doing and that’s exactly what they’re best at. The only minor difference with earlier releases is perhaps the tempo. A bit more subdued, a bit slower. A bit. A tiny bit. But the speedrock moniker is still called for and if nothing else; the reduced tempo seems to make the band even more of a monster and even heavier. And then there are the cover versions of New Rose (The Damned) and Heart Full Of Soul (The Yardbirds) which are wickedly done and insanely good. The last one featuring guest vocals by Mark Phillips from Demented Are Go. Aah yes, a new Peter Pan Speedrock, time to get loud, hard and angry. And enjoy the hell out of every crazy little thing you do!

Candybar Planet – Timelapse

Candybar Planet – Timelapse
Lighttown Fidelity – 2013
Rock, Hard, Stoner
Rated: ****

A few months ago the Dutch stoner formation Candybar Planet reunited and gave an incredible album launch performance in the futuristic Evoluon building in their hometown of Eindhoven. The Timelapse album, their first in fourteen years, was a return to something great and good and reminded us all of the good times when Beaver, Celestial Season and 7Zuma7 were still going strong. Luckily we’ve also seen those bands get together on occasion for festivals like Roadburn. But Candybar Planet is the only one with a definite promise for the future in the form of their new album Timelapse. And if this is the level of goodness we should expect from the others; we should definitely coerce them all, with or without a gun, to get back into action. Damn these mighty groovy riffs and thick solos. And the light psychedelic touch we hear in a few of their new songs. Not to mention that almost shaken and breaking sound of the vocals. That’s what you get when you set the bar a little too high; and that’s exactly how we like it. This is simply put a high stakes tradition and whoever bets high; gets the big reward…

Note: Roel ‘Dr No’ Aben has decided to leave the band again to concentrate on his Four Headed Dog project with the guys from Peter Pan Speedrock. The boys from Candybar Planet continue on as a trio…

Four Headed Dog

Four Headed Dog

Do you hear that growling beast? Do you hear that loud bark around the corner? Indeed; fear for your life because the Four Headed Dog is coming! A new stoner-project by the three amigos from Peter Pan Speedrock together with illustrious fuzz master and analog effects wizard Dr.No. Expressing their love and fascination for all things ultra-heavy and ultra-loud. No strangers to each other musically, Peter and Dr.NO already worked together some years ago in the short-lived Repomen, and one could say Four Headed Dog seeks it's way in somewhat of the same musical direction. Guitars will be tuned down and the volume will be turned all the way up. And this Saturday will see their very first official performance at the free Kempenerpop festival in Waalre, Netherlands. Leave your earplugs at home. They will be of no use.

Peter Pan Speedrock – We Want Blood

Peter Pan Speedrock – We Want Blood
Suburban – 2010
Speedrock
Waardering: ****

The trio from Eindhoven Rockcity, which has been making name for themselves under the aptly chosen moniker Peter Pan Speedrock, is back with a new album. We Want Blood is their tenth full album and was recorded in their very own studio. Thirteen heavy rocksongs that put the pedal to the metal and race to the finish line. Only the song Just Another Day takes the foot of the gas and the instrumental Bakkerburg seems to be the perfect pit stop for beer and gasoline. On other fronts it’s all hard, tight, dirty, mean and incredibly good. Hatseflats bass, hopsakee drums and swaydragging guitar! Peter Pan once again provides the daily needed dose of adrenaline and the right freakin festive energy. I for one cannot wait till Speedfest motherfuckers!
