Stoner HiVe's Top 5 Artists listened to last week

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 Artists listened to last week:

Horisont (33)
Dool (22)

Another week. Another week filled with great music and fine releases. How about that new Horisont? Which is all About Time! And when they open with a cover which was named after us, The HiVe, we can only put it on repeat until we go crazy with lust for the rest of the album! The four crazy Mexicans of Mala Educación give us something to really stomp with! And you can never go wrong with a new Spidergawd, we all have known that since the first album and this fourth one only proves we all were right from the beginning. And Hell’s Fire gave us some fine stoner metal with definitely love for southern roots to drive fast with. Dool is ofcourse the new formation featuring The Devils Blood members and Ryanne van Dorst, Elle Bandita herself. Dark and twisted and still unbelievably catchy!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s been a while since we fired off a Quick Fire Friday round. Not because we didn’t have enough artists and bands we wanted to get out there. But simply because time is getting more limited by the day and the amount of records, EP’s, demo’s and singles we receive every twenty-four hours is simply staggering. We simply cannot deliver for everyone. And we are very sorry about that. But as everyone knows, rent has to be paid and beers have to be guzzled. But here it is once again, a small selection of amazing bands that deserve way more attention than the tiny amount of words selected here. But hey, it’s the Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday. And it burns hot like molten lava!

The Fre3 Bastards – In Our Worlds of Bastards

This French trio started around 2014 and are about to release a second EP, this one titled: In Our World of Bastards. The Fre3 Bastards play easy going heavy rock. It’s a no bullshit approach to hardrock and stoner. And the five tracks on this EP stay with you because of it. Simple, effective and headbangingly good!

Kvalm – The Greatest Story Ever Told

Kvalm from Stockholm, Sweden is about to release it’s debut EP The Greatest Story Ever Told. Four tracks that use their doom, stoner and sludge influences in a meticulous and careful way. And moving into a more post rock, post metal approach of layering everything with an abundance of heavy. Listen up while Kvalm tells their story…

La Bestia De Gevaudan – Feral

An atmospheric, ambient, post metal, sludgecore extravaganza. Yes sire, the four-piece La Bestia De Gevaudan is a definite weird, aggressive and wonderful animal. It moves in a different way and will not be for everyone. The faint hearted better pass it by. But for everyone else who loves it prickly, rough, savage and wild, Feral is the definite six track scream adventure you need.

The Moonshine Brand – Welcome To Gypsy Town

The German threepiece The Moonshine Brand has just released their first EP called Welcome To Gypsy Town. A righteous blues rock ditty infused with some psychedelic and southern touches. They do it in a pure and honest seventies approach of everything we hold dear. It’s laidback, easy going and with wonderful transcendental poetry. Pour yourself a canister of Moonshine and head on over to Gypsy Town…

M I L K – Black Dog (Ain’t No Turning Back)

M I L K are a three-piece driven psychedelic British rock band. Imploring seventies influences and paying homage to everything we love from the bluesrock. Just check out their single Black Dog (Ain’t No Turning Back). Or Salt for that matter. Two damn fine songs from the biggest thing since powdered milk!

Clouds Taste Satanic – Dawn of The Satanic Age

Clouds Taste Satanic – Dawn of The Satanic Age
Self released – 2016
Rock, Instrumental, Doom, Stoner, Metal
Rated: ****

Their first release To Sleep Beyond The Earth is still on heavy rotation over here. The way they manage to invoke a certain atmosphere on that record, a sense of dread and the coming of something malevolent is simply stunning. The New York quartet Clouds Taste Satanic continued that streak with the follow-up Your Doom Has Come, which was definitely a more laidback almost catchy approach to their evil trumpet call kind of music. And now they are back with a third installment: Dawn Of The Satanic Age. If ever there was a trumpet call title, this is it ofcourse. On it, they seem to continue to strip their music down to its most primordial self. Doom as doom should be. Instrumental rock that worships the riffs, the groove and the slow march. But even if the title hints at darkness, death and decay, there is an abundance of lighter compositions on this third record. They have always managed to put more breathing room, air and a brighter feeling into their wicked arrangements. But this time around they give it that extra punch, that extra sharp edge. Which is ofcourse that more luscious of paradoxes. Evil, dark and a bit occult, yet full of air and almost elegant. Which is what good music thrives on. Even if it heralds the coming of the beast!

Shadow Giant – Honkeytonk on The Moon

Shadow Giant – Honkeytonk on The Moon
Graven Earth Records – 2017
Rock, Southern, Blues, Stoner, Sludge
Rated: ****

The debut album Honkeytonk on The Moon by Hammond, Louisiana, USA born quartet Shadow Giant sounds like it was recorded at the bottom of a beercan. And that just shows how mad these cats must be and how they must enjoy their beers. We can only state that we would definitely toast the hell out of the night or afternoon or morning with these guys. Judging from the songtitles they also know their fun and not to take things too seriously. And that is just what you want from this kind of heavy southern rock. Infused with the almighty blues, some stoner and some sludge the four of them give us five humid and sweaty tracks that stand out in laidback grooves and steady marches to the bar. Yes, there it is again, more alcoholic references. This is not music one should serve to a wavering alcoholic. It will definitely make him jump from the wagon and guzzle every bourbon bottle and beer chaser he can get his hands on. And I will be right there drinking my fill with him and whooping it up with Shadow Giant and their rowdy Honkeytonk on The Moon!

3 Wheeler Band – Space Tribe

3 Wheeler Band – Space Tribe
Self released – 2016
Rock, Stoner, Blues, Hard, Southern, Space
Rated: ****

3 Wheeler Band is a power trio from the outskirts of Monterrey, Mexico. Their heavy fuzzed out stoner blues first came at us back in 2013 via the Smoke ‘N Groove album. And now they’re back with an album called Space Tribe. Which was released at the very end of December 2016. On it they move their heavy rock a tiny bit in the direction of space rock. But for the most part they stick to their guns. And they shoot musical bullets full of groove and grit. Something they definitely borrowed from the greats of the seventies, but infused with growling vocals, rumbling bass work and bluesy guitar colors. Above all it sounds majestically powerful without ever becoming to massive or metallic, they stick to what they do best. Blues ‘n groove and with all their teeth bared!

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 Artists listened to last week

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 Artists listened to last week:

Madrugada (61)
Spaceslug (24)
Stavast (22)

A week has passsed since the return from the mountains. A week filled with mucus, sweat and fever. But this kinghell of a flu has passed and we are getting back to work. Which we already did while listening to the best band ever: Madrugada. We still return to them, cause we cannot get enough of their brooding atmosphere. And well, every one of their five albums is simply beautiful and stunning.  Spaceslug have a new album out! Lemanis from last year was damn good, Time Travel Dilemma is even better! And Dawn Of The Satanic Age by Clouds Taste Satanic was on heavy rotation as well. Still forming vaporous thoughts on that one. Stavast is the new band of Dutch pet punk Marco Roelofs, formerly of Heideroosjes. And when the Russian The Souldiggers Band release something new, we sit up, take notice and spin the crap out of it!

All in all, good music for good people!

Back from the mountains...

Back from the mountains...

We have returned from flying from the top of mountains and jumping of barstools. The snow was fine and the weather was decent. And apart from a kinghell of a flu at the end of the holiday, which is still riding my blood, all went off without a hitch! Great times and great rides!

And now, we can continue on with the HiVe show!

Fatso Jetson & Del Toros

Fatso Jetson & Del Toros
Shattered Platter – 2016
Rock, Surf, Stoner, Punk
Rated: *****

There is always something special about a good seven inch. It is that smash ‘n grab mentality. To really get your heart racing and your blood cooking before its time is up. We love the seven inch. Although we must confess we always judge them harshly. For if a seven-inch messes up its valuable time, we shall refrain from putting the needle back on it and instead opt for a full-sized record. But when the limited run split seven inch turned up featuring heroes Fatso Jetson and the Dutch heavy surfers Del-Toros we were pretty confident it would be needle burner! And so it was. It kept being spun during the entire month of December and January and we can safely say it is a stunning release. Released by Shattered Platter, my number 617, has been on heavy rotation. And I had not expected to be so enchanted with Die Cast, the Del-Toros three-piece song. Recorded by PCR van Elderen in my hometown of Eindhoven the track in heavy laced with fine samples and punky surf sounds on reverb. It’s only almost five minutes, but those minutes you surf on high groove that will have you lusting for sunny times and cool drinks, dangerous nights and loose women. Yes, Adventure time it is! And the alternate version of the Dreamhomes track, which can be found, minus two minutes on Fatso Jetson’s awesome Idle Hands record of 2016, delivers the instrumental goodness once again. Instead of surfing the infinite crest of high and beautiful waves, the Fatso Jetson effort stumbles and rumbles and lumbers through the fog. This two minute longer version is so much more beautiful and intense, you wonder why they did not incorporate this version on the record. It’s delirious and sweltering and will have you on edge for the entire (almost) seven minutes. Yes, this seven-inch is once again a true smash ‘n grab and will leave you smitten with these infinitely cool tunes!
