Number 14

Number 14

A fifteen point jump takes us to Number 14. Where we find an album that was released by Ripple Music and Morbid and Miserable Records back in September. The Italian trio is on their third full-sized album and have made another amazing step forward in both songwriting and production. They are kicking down the temple doors and lighting the altar on fire! This is doom metal fully awake, Sabbath blooded riffs, proto metal swagger, a finger licking stoner groove and occult grime swirling into something dangerous and wicked. The songs hit harder, move smarter and seem to ooze with some deliciously strange details. Take that garage rock filth here or the psychedelic haze there and even that touch of dungeon-synth shadows. Vocals arrive like a half mad cult sermon, pulling you deeper into the ritual with no place left to run. Darker, louder and sharper! It’s the sound of a band possessed, confident and merciless. They are becoming the regal doom masters that are worthy to sit upon all of them thrones…

On Number 14 we find:

Warcoe – Upon Tall Thrones

Warcoe – Upon Tall Thrones
Ripple Music / Morbid and Miserable Records – 2025
Metal, Classic, Doom, Proto
Rated: *****

I might have passed by their houses. Drove passed their rehearsal place or the studio they recorded in when I travelled from the south of Italy to the north back in June. We actually stopped a night over near Cattolica and could have easily travelled to Pesaro to meet the three from Warcoe. Well, and perhaps we should have. Next year perhaps? But this year we could have been the first to hear the new tunes that made it to the Upon Tall Thrones album. A step forward once again for the Italian trio. Not just in songwriting and production. But also, because they signed to Ripple Music and Morbid and Miserable Redcords, and with the trust of those labels behind you, you know you are on to something big… Something that might make a splash…

Upon Tall Thrones will be arriving on September 26th and the nine tracks and almost forty minutes of Warcoe will do wonders for all proto metal, doom metal and classic metal loving freaks out there. There’s so much of the tried and tested heaviness on here that it’s impossible to not to feel the jive and the groove of this beautiful doom record. But then there are those minute different touches. This is the spice of Upon Tall Thrones for me personally. The garage touch on Spheres with a guitar that reminds of Black Keys or Bud Spencer Blues Explosion or the Flame In Your Hand track that brings in something good out of the Dungeon Synth genre. Which isn’t easy in my humble opinion. Or Brown Witch, with its stoner trucking and grunge fuzzing. And the vocals throughout, drawling and slightly nasal, offer this minor cult element and turns every vocal moment into a ritual you will want to be a part off. There are so many ‘or’s’ and ‘and’s’ to sum up, cause even though I started with the remark that there is so much ‘tried and tested heaviness’ on this album, the Warcoe three class up every part of that. They’ve gobbled up all of their influences and sneaked them in here or there, giving every track that silver shining edge and the entire Upon Tall Thrones album something mercurial. Indeed, an album laced with mercury and unpredictable touches throughout. This will cause ripples for a very long time…

Album drops on September 26th, but you can listen to two singles right now...

Warcoe – A Place For Demons

Warcoe – A Place For Demons
Regain records / Helter Skelter Productions / Morbid And Miserable Records – 2023
Rock, Metal, Classic, Doom, Stoner
Rated: ****

We mentioned the title track and second single of their new album back in August and could not wait to hear the full A Place For Demons album. Cause Italian trio Warcoe knows where the good mustard was stored and expertly uses the knife to spread out all that heavy metal, classic doom with stoner touches across eight fine tracks. Fuller and dense the first two tracks on the album are the two single you might have already heard and offer that sweet and hazy classic metal, which will strike a chord for all Sabbath lovers and implores that finger licking little occult sweet spot. What follows is Rune Dweller, which offers a scrumptious acoustic interlude, which in turn sets things up for a great transition into fourth track Leaves. A centralized riff around which the track revolves and whirls, in such a way that it delves up all that traditional metal, without ever sounding like anything that came before. Proto doom served up in such a classic way, that the somewhat subdued solo work later on will still make every metal head soar, and when that riff returns, heads will bang and beers will be chugged. Grand master stuff and following track Ishkur goes forth in a similar fashion. A bit more thunderous, gritty and dense, the track does open up thanks to the vocals. And it will surely do the same kind of proto wonder that Leaves did. Two more in the same vein follow before we come to closing, battleship eight track Buio. A first for the Warcoe three, cause before this they’ve always condensed their songs to four to five minutes. But Buio does not suffer from needless continuation, repetition or anything tedious. No, the tempo slows down to a doom trod, the build up is slow, strenuous and with a determination bordering on obsessiveness. In fact, this heads steadily into Sleep territory, but without any vocals and very little guitar freak outs. It’s actually the drums that are allowed to go wild and end up delivering a restrained pay-off before the fade out towards a different kind of finale. A finale that seems to chime off into the future, a different place, for demons, where more Warcoe will be galloping around…

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

It wouldn’t be a Quick Fire Weekend if we did not do a Sunday roast as well! So, for your smokey tastebuds, we continue on with more meaty heaviness today! So, this here, is the Sunday post of the second Quick Fire Weekend of 2023! Meant to spread the word on all that good stuff out there! And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. But here it is… Another Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Wasteland Haze – Welcome to Wasteland Haze

And we start this Sunday off with a proper bang! An instrumental, doom enriched stoner rocking bang that is! Straight out of Düsseldorf, Germany comes the Wasteland Haze trio and their debut full-sized effort Welcome to Wasteland Haze. Seven crazy good tracks that expertly now when to push or pull, to open up the throttle and give it all some speed or to use snippets, ambient touches and a doom trod to give it all more gravitas. This Wasteland Haze sounds like paradise!

 Chapel Floods – Chapel Floods

Coming through the landline at four o’ clock in the morning with a great Ponzi scheme, the trio from Rotherham, UK called Chapel Floods! Unearthly snarling on the other side of the line blasts open your eyes together with a grinding relentless doom march. But by the time the frog in his throat dies, and the clean vocals make opening track Grief Mason finally ascend to the heavens, you will be ready to sign over your money and forgo any chance of a return. Stick around, cause Chapel Floods got some more money-making surprises up their sleeves…

Yojimbo - Doomsday Clock

Yojimbo hails from Strassbourg, France. The four-piece delivered their debut five-track self-titled EP back in March of 2022. But 2023 saw them charting a new course, with a new line-up and Doomsday Clock is the first single and video for the new crew. And the new Doomsday Clock song hold so much promise for the future, paradoxically, that we cannot wait for it to arrive. ‘Intergalactic Stoner’ they state, and does indeed feel like you are with them, right there, on this endless cosmic journey. And for me, Doomsday Clock keeps spinning and spinning, until the hands become dizzy and start dancing their whirling dance with me…

Warcoe – A Place For Demons

We absolutely dug Warcoe’s The Giant’s Dream release back from 2022. Since then, the Italian three released their Pyramid Of Despair single and follow that one up with their newest outing: A Place For Demons. It’s the second single for the new album to arrive later this year on Regain Records. Classic metal, traditional doom! Sabbath sure and Pentagram power, A Place For Demons is your happy place!

AlphaWhores – Same Team

Stonerized, Alternative rock from Panama City, Panama, signed to Editoris Records, it’s the AlphaWhores duo and they will soon release their debut album. Same Team is the first video and single to that album. As said, we’ve got some stonerized alternative rock on our hands that implores some doom touches and whole lot of metal strokes. Indeed, it strokes, and fondles, and pats all those place you love to have fondled… That’s why they’re called AlphaWhores!

HighSanity – Half

Why isn’t everyone already falling over themselves gushing over HighSanity! Their eight-track debut album, out on Interstellar Smoke Records, is full of mostly slow reverie for the desert, stoner and psychedelic genres. There’s nothing half-baked about Half, bursting with amazing guitar work, and jam-packed with awesome riffs. Fuzzed out where needed, and grunge tinted, but always superbly inspirational!

Garden of Ash – Garden of Ash

Faerie like, fair female vocals floating over the grungy rock that moves towards a more nineties metal take as well as that gothic touched rock that came from bands like The Gathering. We’re talking about the, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada three callled Garden of Ash and their debut eight track album. When she holds back on her power, the vocalist even sounds a bit like Anneke van Giersbergen, impressive.

Blood Lightning – Blankets

Formed in December 2020, Blood Lightning brings together the talents of vocalist Jim Healey (We’re All Gonna Die), guitarist Doug Sherman (GOZU), bassist Bob Maloney (Worshipper) and drummer J.R. Roach (Sam Black Church). What began as a 2019 Halloween show playing the entire Black Sabbath "Born Again" album just for fun has culminated in the release of original material by four veterans of the Boston metal/hardcore community. But there’s little hardcore influence on the Blankets track, this is good and wholesome classic metal, nineties era most but overall just slow grooving but intensely pounding! Can’t wait to hear the full album…

Hauch – Lehmasche

Should we have mentioned Hauch together with Hauer yesterday? To confuse you all out there? Ho ho! But, with their Lehmasche EP, we come to the end of the Quick Fire Weekend! But what an end! The five tracks on their debut EP are absolutely homeruns! Smashing, pounding, rough and raw! The four-piece from Waltrop, Germany bring you German language stoner rock, stoner metal and soaring lead guitar work, that gives the compositions breathing room whenever they get to let loose. The production perfect! Ich hörte atemlos zu... This is so good in fact, it leaves me breathless…

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s Friday again! Tonight we have to work... Doing a review of the Red Hot Chili Peppers show... But right now, we just realize it's Friday! And we’ve got yet another one of those crazy Quick Fire Friday rounds for you to go insane to! Cause there’s still a lot to cover and everyone of those singles, EPs and demos mentioned below are worth your time. Shit, they are worth way more of our time! But you know how it is… There is so much out there, so much good an heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Deville – Hanged, Drawn and Quartered

Starting off with a righteous bang! We reviewed the very cool Hydra and ofcourse their last awesome album Pigs With Gods on the HiVe and know Deville has let us know that they will be releasing a new album this year through that label we only recently discovered, and already truly adore: Sixteentimes Music! Before the album arrives they shall release some singles that did NOT make the album! Hanged, Drawn and Quartered is once again more metal and more of that great Deville sound! Packing an incredible punch! Can’t wait to hear that new album!

Ogives Big Band – Harm Redux

Harm Redux is a reimagining of the 2019 Harm EP by Ogives Big Band. This because Ogives went from three to four members, now including a vocalist. And this addition makes the droning noise, the psych metal, the math prog and all the other experimental ruckus the Bristol band produces even more frantic and feverish, inducing a delirium and psychotic reactions with no quarter asked and none given…

Diamond Skull – The Deal

Austrian trio Diamond Skull are back with a new single The Deal! And one hell of a single it is, a midtempo, eighties and seventies referencing hard rocking slow builder. The blues roots are never far away and so is the feeling that you are listening to something classic. Groovy, metallic and hypnotic indeed! And a sure fire way to get the blood pumping and your anxiety to hear a full album to a maximum level… Cause if they’ve made The Deal with the Devil…

Electric Fire Records

Basalt Shrine – From Fiery Tongues

Have we mentioned how we love Electric Spark Records from the Netherlands? Have we mentioned it enough? Well, here we go mentioning it again: we love Electric Spark Records! And they are about to release a new album from a insane black doom, post metal, sludge noise outfit from the Philippines called Basalt Shrine on vinyl. The four produce forty minutes of overwhelming metal, doom, noise and turning it extremely bleak, black and dark with its snarling vocals. From Fiery Tongues indeed!

Warcoe – The Giant’s Dream

We’ve been listening to Warcoe for a while now; but it was thanks to Brandon from Morbid And Miserable Records and Marc-Eric Gagnon tipping it on the Doom Charts Peroration post for March that we got back into The Giant’s Dream for more of that good and heavy proto action! The Italian three deliver ‘groovy doom from the abyss’; where the giants have definitely been spinning a lot of Black Sabbath and Iommi honoring heavy metal. It’s stunning and it’s so addictive; once they’ve gotten their hooks in you there is no escape possible…

So, if they haven’t managed to grapple you yet: here’s a bandcamp code to drag you into the abyss with them: h3c4-egkt

Louisiana Drifter – After The Flood

Ending it once again with something spectacular! Louisiana Drifter. Great name! And so is the music on their sophomore EP, After The Flood. The first EP, Road To Nowhere sported some great music but a lo-fi almost open-source recording sound. The new four-track release sounds so much improved we might assume they’ve stood around on a crossroads somewhere looking to make a deal. Bluesy rock, steeped in the seventies, with those psychedelic edges and stoner curves that we all love so much. Damn bluesy bayou-tastic goodness!
