Clouds Taste Satanic – Birmingham 2024

Clouds Taste Satanic – Birmingham 2024
Self-released – 2025
Rock, Metal, Doom, Prog, Instrumental
Rated: ****

The new digital four tack, vinyl three track, release Birmingham 2024 is a ‘no overdub document of the bands set list while on tour in Europe that year.’ The band is Clouds Taste Satanic and the album therefor grabs parts from their latest album 79 A.E., their 2019 album Evil Eye and their sophomore album from 2015 called Your Doom Has Come. That last part is the song Out Of The Abyss and is included in the download once the three track vinyl is purchased. It’s the first of a ‘Live In The Studio’ series and serves indeed as a document to the state of the band at that moment in time. The live feel and chosen quarter part of the Collision part followed by three quarters of Reclamation turn it into an entirely different animal, often pushing a more doom approach towards the surface. An extra hazy atmosphere, perhaps courtesy of Hellfire Studios in Birmingham, or because of a different pedal or two, make all the tracks more vaporous and trance inducing. Pagan Worship, pehaps becoming less ominious and more psychedelic. Deepening the chords struck within you and chiming that legendary bell, so as to give reference to the legends that came before. If the Live In The Studio series continues on throughout different studios across the globe, constantly bringing to live, and bearing the state current state of Clouds Taste Satanic, this might just turn out to be the series that every instrumental doom enthusiast needs to follow. This first chapter is worth it and shows a lot of promise for renewal..

Clouds Taste Satanic – 79 A.E.

Clouds Taste Satanic – 79 A.E.
Majestic Mountain Records – 2024
Instrumental, Rock, Prog, Doom, Metal
Rated: *****

There are enough asteroids already discovered that are on a graze course for planet Earth, but none are sure to collide. But impact events have happened in the past and will surely happen in the future. And it will probably be an even faster moving, late discovery that will wipe out most of life on our beautiful planet. If we don’t get to do that ourselves sooner. But before that happens, we are lucky enough to be on this planet at this moment in time, when so much great music is released and it can take some of the stress and pain away from seeing this beautiful planet being wrecked and humanity everywhere going through turmoil and war. Beautiful music. It’s there for you. For instance, the new 79 A.E. album… The Clouds Taste Satanic cats have been showing off their skills, their knowledge and their flair since their first release To Sleep Beyond The Earth from 2014. And ever since that impressive debut release most of their songs and tones have always been in the doom territory and had this ominous or even outright evil character to it. But ever since that first album their sound has also been evolving and using ever more progressive touches. Or even classic and proto rock influences. Perhaps glaringly so on Clouds Covered or their Christmas EP from last December. But for their new 79 A.E. they have gone full prog rock and metal on our souls. There is still that doom touch, how can there not be with Clouds Taste Satanic and especially since 79 A.E. is their soundtrack for the Apocalypse. A world destroyed by an asteroid strike. But for the most part they traverse through a different landscape. The images conjured are violent, full of barren wastes, desolate hills, darkened skies and a sun still blazing above it all like a million atomic bombs. But the music does want to convey more than the saddening knowledge of an earth gone to hell. Even during that worrying and certainly doom touched opening sequence, there’s already a ray of light in the form of the echoing guitar line, a piece of brilliance that gives the listener hope that this tale of woe and despair, might in the end, after forty five minutes have a joyful conclusion. And those moments reappear throughout the two tracks, giving the listener the courage to continue. During Collision, the opening half of the album, they are limited to a few segments. Metal and their almost signature doom sound, takes precedence over everything else and heralds the impact. During the second half called Reclamation they give themselves increasingly over to the prog-rock that we mentioned before. And instead of segueing into moments of light and air like on Collision, they do it the other way around. Darker, doomier moments serrate the composition and divide these twenty minutes of impressive and progressive structuring into build ups, break downs, interludes and give it so much atmosphere and soul, it will surely make you envision mesmerizing landscapes. And I am sure you will experience this grand adventure in a different way. But the outcome remains the same. An even bigger appreciation for their skills, their knowledge and their flair and everything Clouds Taste Satanic.

A new week awaits! Still recovering from a little jaw surgery unfortunately, but this week everything should be on the upside. Decided to leave out the two albums I had to listen to for interview purposes. Cause Scott Stapp and Novastar have very little to do with the Heavy Underground and that’s what Stoner HiVe is all about! The Heavy Underground and all that majestic music floating around. Like that anthemic punk from Angel Face or the new album by the stonerhardcore kings Bokassa! And there’s so much more. Let’s hope I find the time to shine some light on a few others this week! Have a great one and keep it groovy!

Tony Maim’s – Personal Top 20

We were done with posting all the Personal Top 20 lists of the Stoner HiVe Team Members. Or so we thought! Cause there is always Madman Tony Maim to consider! Guitars On Drugs, which released DubFuzz in 2022. Always diligent when it comes to punk and noise and sending his list for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. Well, it’s Madman Tony Maim; and he’s right, we’re wrong. And when the Madman speaks, we listen! So, here's his choice list of 25 favorite albums of 2023!!

Clouds Taste Satanic - All I Want For Christmas Is Your Soul EP

Clouds Taste Satanic - All I Want For Christmas Is Your Soul EP
Kinda Like Music – 2023
Rock, Metal, Psych, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ***

Have we mentioned every release by Clouds Taste Satanic since their first one To Sleep Beyond The Earth from 2014? We think so. Or perhaps we forgot to write about their Cloud Covered, covers album from 2021? An oversight for sure, but perhaps due to the fact that we definitely do love cover and tribute albums, but simply always forget to write about them, cause they seem to serve as a fun interlude for us. Well, the four tracks on their new All I Want For Christmas Is Your Soul EP are also covers, and will not just serve as fun interlude but probably as a welcome moment of respite, during the Whamageddon and every other over heard snow globe pop track. Cause this time, you guessed it, the four tracks on the EP are all Christmas themed tracks. And there for they have a more important element to them, simply because we need music for the holidays. And there aren’t that many Christmas tracks we need to hear during the holidays. Let It Snow by De Staat being one. Mr. Grinch by We Hunt Buffalo being two and now there are the new Clouds Taste Satanic four. Their instrumental versions of All I Want for Christmas Is You, You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch, Little Drummer Boy and Spinal Tap’s Christmas With The Devil will offer a welcome moment of heavy rock during the festivities. I guess we’re ready for it, bring out the eggnog, the lewd Christmas sweaters and hats and let’s have a toast to Shaitan and Clouds Taste Satanic! Merry Christmas right back at ya, you filthy animals!

Clouds Taste Satanic – Tales Of Demonic Possession

Clouds Taste Satanic – Tales Of Demonic Possession
Majestic Mountain Records – 2023
Rock, Acid, Doom, Psych, Stoner, Sludge, Space, Instrumental
Rated: *****

Hey, Clouds Taste Satanic are back - this means jams of freakout acid guitar brilliance. They play instrumental stoner with heavy vibes and as with all instrumental projects the question has to be asked - is there enough going on to keep your attention wandering due to the lack of vocals? In this case, the answer is a resounding yes. The guitar riffs are loud and nicely fuzzed, evoking the sunbaked desert sound but with a heaviness drawn from sludge. Drones and atmospherics throb underneath the songs, bringing in some space-rock undercurrents. Hypnotic slow tracks build up with thunderous drumming until distorted guitar start to wail with wonderful psych exploration. They tread the murky path of doom, heavy psych, raw stoner with a touch of sludge riffery. Big, slow, and powerful, Clouds Taste Satanic create some almost post-metal atmospherics to devastating effect. This combination of light and shade make for the tension that is evident on this album. Tales Of Demonic Possession. This is the good shit.

Monster Magnet – A Better Dystopia

Monster Magnet – A Better Dystopia
Napalm Records – 2021
Rock, Metal, Stoner, Space
Rated: ****

There’ve been two cover albums released recently that have been spinning ever since at the HiVe HQ. One is the Cloud Covered album by the awesome Clouds Taste Satanic, an album we will definitely mention in the very near future. O’ and we noticed Hugo just posted a write-up on his awesome Orange Maze blog, so head on over and grab an earful over there! The other one, is of course the new album A Better Dystopia by the legendary Monster Magnet. Even though we already assumed it would probably be a good one; there was a moment there that we felt a small pang of disappointment. We just really would have loved new Monster Magnet material. As we do every day. Every day. But that momentary feeling was incinerated by the thirteen amazing versions brought to you by Dave Wyndorf and his cronies. It’s loud, its filthy and it’s awesome. The thirteen tracks are all pulled out of the oubliette cesspit of psych, acid and proto-metal and indeed, not all of them are that well known. Most famous might be the Born To Go track from Hawkwind, and that one turns into one of the most fantastic tracks every to grace you ears. With a release to intense it will definitely bring you every sort of satisfaction! And after that intense closer Welcome To The Void leaves you all alone out there, at the bottom of the rabbit hole, where you will be waiting for the next Monster Magnet rocket ship to blast through the infinite space, the fourth dimension or the twilight zone with. You will realize that this is the kind of cover album the world needs right now, rough, raw and nuclear!

Number 10

Number 10

A very close call indeed getting into the Top 10! Cause we jump only 4 points from Lo-Pan on Number 11 to reach the album that features on the Number 10 spot! A band that we have loved since the very beginning and which we mentioned on the HiVe with almost every release. They however never made it to the Top 20 Countdown for some insane reason. But here they are now! They in fact almost made it with another album as well. Cause yes, this band managed to release two amazing records in one year. And the other one ended up around the 30th spot. Madman Tony Maim wrote about these cats when the album came out: “These guys just do it right. Expansive soundscapes carry you along – in my head I am riding a skeletal horse across a blasted city ruin being trailed by mutated wolves and shambling cannibal women who are strangely sexy. Stunning guitar work and song composition make me want this piped directly into my ears at all times. This is the good shit.” Strangely sexy, strangely satanic and strangely evil! On Number 10 we find!

Instrumental music sucks big time – boring jamming that no one wants to hear, recorded and presented as an album. You lazy fuckers, do not waste my time. And then something comes along to change your mind. Never listened to Clouds Taste Satanic before but was sent a promo and decided to give it a five minute spin ….. which turned into playing the whole thing, getting to the end and starting again. These guys just do it right. Expansive soundscapes carry you along – in my head I am riding a skeletal horse across a blasted city ruin being trailed by mutated wolves and shambling cannibal women who are strangely sexy. Stunning guitar work and song composition make me want this piped directly into my ears at all times. This is the good shit.

Thanks to Leanne Ridgeway @ Mettle Media for promo.

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 Artists listened to last week…

Nothing more but a quick list of our most listened to records last week. The ones we kept spinning, while all you wonderful people sent their lists of favorite records of 2017 to us. We had a lot of work entering them all in for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2017 which will start in 2 days! So, two days left boys & girls, get your lists in now! Send them HERE ! But what did we spin you ask? A lot of Uffe Lorenzen’s new solo record Galmandsværk out on Bad Afro Records and whole a lot of Red Scalp’s record Lost Ghosts. The Destroyer album by Magda-Vega suddenly popped up on my radar. It’s weird, it’s dangerous and that’s just how we like it! Another one that entered out vision was Mountains of Madness and their Kick In The Guts release. Heavy, fuzzy stoner groove with a punch! And of course, the master composers of Clouds Taste Satanic. We cannot stop spinning the new The Glitter Of Infinite Hell album. Their best rock symphony yet!

Don't forget... TWO days left to send us your list of favorite albums!

Clouds Taste Satanic – The Glitter of Infinite Hell

Clouds Taste Satanic – The Glitter of Infinite Hell
Kinda Like Music – 2017
Rock, Doom, Psych, Instrumental
Rated: *****

Two months in a row, October & November, they came in second to the number one of the Doom Charts. Our very own Billy Goate from the awesome Doomed & Stoned had the honors to write a blurb about the new Clouds Taste Satanic. And he claimed that ‘Masterpiece is not too strong a word’ to describe The Glitter Of Infinite Hell. And we could not agree more. We’ve been following this foursome from Brooklyn since we first spun To Sleep Beyond The Earth back in 2014. And they have been releasing a steady output of instrumental greatness since then. A joyous occasion every time one of their evil sounding work of arts came out. Your Doom Has Come in 2015 and Dawn Of The Satanic Age last year. But those two records, we must confess, did not top their first one. In our opinion. Well, this one does not just top that first one or the latter two, they top every other record in the instrumental doom genre. Holy hell! It starts with the vinyl cover. Letting your eyes wander across the Jheronimus Bosch inspired painting Christ’s Descent Into Hell which can be viewed in the Met in New York. One wishes that the four were in Den Bosch, Netherlands last year during the majestic Bosch exposition. Hell, they should have played a show every night the museum was opened. Four musical art pieces are served on a double album set on bronze & bone color-in-color vinyl with gold & oxblood splatter. Four tales of Greed, Treachery, Violence and Wrath. And all four of them are truly amazing. This is doom on the very edge of the needle! But this isn’t just doom. It marries a truckload of genres in a rock symphony without ever becoming a classical opus. It is however a magnus opus. A grand piece of music that keeps on becoming better and better. And this is not just for the doom lovers out there. This is for every rock fiend! And I do mean every single one of them! Join the Clouds with their trip down below. Cause the soundtrack for everyone’s descent into hell just got a whole lot more addictive and amazing!

Clouds Taste Satanic – Dawn of The Satanic Age

Clouds Taste Satanic – Dawn of The Satanic Age
Self released – 2016
Rock, Instrumental, Doom, Stoner, Metal
Rated: ****

Their first release To Sleep Beyond The Earth is still on heavy rotation over here. The way they manage to invoke a certain atmosphere on that record, a sense of dread and the coming of something malevolent is simply stunning. The New York quartet Clouds Taste Satanic continued that streak with the follow-up Your Doom Has Come, which was definitely a more laidback almost catchy approach to their evil trumpet call kind of music. And now they are back with a third installment: Dawn Of The Satanic Age. If ever there was a trumpet call title, this is it ofcourse. On it, they seem to continue to strip their music down to its most primordial self. Doom as doom should be. Instrumental rock that worships the riffs, the groove and the slow march. But even if the title hints at darkness, death and decay, there is an abundance of lighter compositions on this third record. They have always managed to put more breathing room, air and a brighter feeling into their wicked arrangements. But this time around they give it that extra punch, that extra sharp edge. Which is ofcourse that more luscious of paradoxes. Evil, dark and a bit occult, yet full of air and almost elegant. Which is what good music thrives on. Even if it heralds the coming of the beast!

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 Artists listened to last week

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 Artists listened to last week:

Madrugada (61)
Spaceslug (24)
Stavast (22)

A week has passsed since the return from the mountains. A week filled with mucus, sweat and fever. But this kinghell of a flu has passed and we are getting back to work. Which we already did while listening to the best band ever: Madrugada. We still return to them, cause we cannot get enough of their brooding atmosphere. And well, every one of their five albums is simply beautiful and stunning.  Spaceslug have a new album out! Lemanis from last year was damn good, Time Travel Dilemma is even better! And Dawn Of The Satanic Age by Clouds Taste Satanic was on heavy rotation as well. Still forming vaporous thoughts on that one. Stavast is the new band of Dutch pet punk Marco Roelofs, formerly of Heideroosjes. And when the Russian The Souldiggers Band release something new, we sit up, take notice and spin the crap out of it!

All in all, good music for good people!

Doom Chart for November 2016

Doom Chart

“For a hundred years or more the world, our world, has been dying. And not one man, in these last hundred years or so, has been crazy enough to put a bomb up the asshole of creation and set it off. The world is rotting away, dying piecemeal. But it needs the coup de grace, it needs to be blown to smithereens. Not one of us is intact, and yet we have in us all the continents and the seas between the continents and the birds of the air. We are going to put it down ― the evolution of this world which has died but which has not been buried.” ~ Henry Miller, Tropic of Cancer

You have come to the right place, acolytes of the Apocalypse.  This is Doom Charts, a global collective of bloggers, album reviewers, podcasters, and radio show hosts with their fingers on the pulse of the heavy underground.  November’s landscape is full of rumbling upsets, as newcomers to the scene edge out the tried and true, and old dogs make a surprising return.

As always, each member of the charts submits their rankings of new and recently released records in the doom-stoner genre (or as many of us call it, “the seventies vibe” and “the Sabbath sound”).  The consensus of picks has become the November Doom Chart.   This month, the list includes both signed and unsigned bands, big labels and small, independent ones.  A few of November’s new contenders to the throne include electric Seattle duo Year of the Cobra, Stockholm heavyweights Domkraft, and Brooklyn instrumental doomers Clouds Taste Satanic.  We hope you discover your next obsession in the list that follows.

Clouds Taste Satanic – Your Doom Has Come

Clouds Taste Satanic – Your Doom Has Come
Self released – 2015
Rock, Doom, Metal
Rated: ****

We were absolutely smitten with the first Clouds Taste Satanic release To Sleep Beyond The Earth. That first record was not only brought to us in proper and extraordinary vinyl fashion, its heavy instrumental march was pure evil excellence. And now, the Brooklyn doomers return with Your Doom Has Come. And yes, it’s exactly as ominous as the title suggests. The four piece satanic stoners have done it again. With a portentous pounce, a first massive smash that lingers and slowly fades for twenty seconds until the riff begins, the Clouds drift in and spell doom and destruction. With a much more oppressive atmosphere they do turn hypnotizing once again, but this time around, the influences they take from repetitive stoner and sludgy tempos dispel any notion that you are dealing with deadly smoke here. Instead you get caught up in something much more rock oriented and almost catchy, for the lack of a better word. Cause they turn up the tempo on many occasion and seek out those age-old and proves strong structures. There is no doubt about it, the new Clouds Taste Satanic album is still menacing, but with much more of a leering grin than truly malevolent like on their debut. But hey, even pure evil relaxes with a beer once in a while…

Clouds Taste Satanic – To Sleep Beyond The Earth

Clouds Taste Satanic – To Sleep Beyond The Earth
Kinda Like Music/Self released – 2014
Doom, Metal, Rock, Stoner, Instrumental
Rated: ****

They hail from the dark and twisted streets of New York and have managed to produce a tone heavy instrumental march that rivals those legendary doom records of yore. We are talking about the enigmatic Clouds Taste Satanic. They have been playing together for two years and it is their debut release under this moniker and with it they firmly stamp their name on the foul tasting vaporous doom we all love to sample till we fall down in a delirious slumber. The album called To Sleep Beyond The Earth is comprised out of two, two-part tracks that both last over twenty-two minutes. And both of them seem to combine to some degree the bands the album-title achieves to hint at. It is distorted and it brings forth the memories of Dopesmoker. But it is the obvious difference that brings light to the artists behind the composition and highlights the fact that they evoke a completely different atmosphere. Lighter to some degree and with more air to breathe. Although we must concede; once a church bell is rung; things can only get evil and dangerous. Which it does! This nouveau quartet heralds the coming of something malevolent. It is on its way.  Something not of this world and before time. And it will be here before the end of day…

(Written by JK)

Ps. And the vinyl is release is a true work of art. Limited to 300 copies, pressed on burgundy/plum (purple) marbled 150-gram vinyl. Gatefold sleeve.
