In these trying times, every album could be or should be a politically charged piece of protest. On the other hand, sometimes we all need to escape from the horrors that surround us. Of course, those horrors are all man made and if they are served up, with beautifully delivered sludge rock and metal, the stories told and the points made are real and deserve to be repeated over and over. This is the case with the eight-track Children album by San Franscico three Wealthy Women. 

Out since August 7th, there’s a sound that reminds of Therapy? on occasion, but noisier, sludgier and more metal. Children. For a lot of people around the globe America and a lot of other countries, societies seem to be coming apart at the seams; and Children sounds like the soundtrack. Low, filthy and furious. The mentioned sludge, doom and noise all collide beneath the weight of all the subjects they cover and stories they tell. 

Guitar colors and subterranean bass drag themselves, mess themselves through the mix, while the band’s faster, punk inflected attack keeps moving the record forward with a sense of urgency. Turning the drag and the mess a gigantic pile of filth. Which seems fitting for all the darkness it translates. The darkness and doom of immigration raids, of radicalized individuals, war and the careless machinery of political cruelty. 

Eight tracks and almost thirty five minutes, are filled with bursts of rage and longer, more oppressive passages. Children seems poised to turn outrage into something physical. And in an era defined by cruelty and an utterly doomed outlook on the state of society and the earth, there is always value in making a noise that refuses to look away. And that is something Wealthy Women refuse to do. This is not an album about watching America burn from some safe distance. This is a trio trapped inside the fire and screaming as loud as they can…
