Tony Maim’s – Personal Top 20 of 2023

Tony Maim’s – Personal Top 20

of 2023!

We were done with posting all the Personal Top 20 lists of the Stoner HiVe Team Members. Or so we thought! Cause there is always Madman Tony Maim to consider! Not really all that active on Stoner HiVe or his own Black Insect Laughter last year, but still here and ready to jump out of the bushes when you least expect it. Yesterday for instance!

Like the rest of the team he’s involved with the Doom Charts. So his list will appear there as well. And as we mentioned he’s got his own Black Insect Laughter blog, which he unfortunately has had little time for and of course all that music that’s pouring out of his brain. Guitars On Drugs, which released DubFuzz in 2022. Always diligent when it comes to punk and noise and sending his list for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. Well, it’s Madman Tony Maim; and he’s right, we’re wrong. And when the Madman speaks, we listen! So, here's his choice list of 25 favorite albums of 2023!!

And indeed Kyle SB (formerly know as Shasta Beast) is also part of the Doom Charts, and he runs the Instagram page of the Doom Charts. And his Personal list will of course also appear on the Doom Charts, but perhaps slightly edited, perhaps not. Top 40 Most Scrobbled Artists of 2023

Top 40 Most Scrobbled Artists of 2023

Before we get going with the Personal lists… My own Personal Top 20, and the lists of the few crazies that do something for the HiVe whenever they have time and energy. We want to share the list of Most Scrobbled Artists of 2023... Cause yes, we still scrobble, we scrobble the shit out of a lot of stuff. And this list of scrobbles, is a list of scrobbles that does not include Youtube, Soundcloud, Spotify or Bandcamp. All of which we also use. Spotify very very little. Youtube and Soundcloud a bit… And Bandcamp quite a lot. We love Bandcamp! But this here is a list of most scrobbled artists as scrobbled by a media player. One of those old school media players. That’s right, some people still use them! Simply because of digital promos sent and digital albums bought and downloaded. So, this isn’t the amount of vinyl listened or cd’s played. Nor is it the amount of listening sessions while on the road to nowhere in particular or something very particular. Nope, this is a list of artists scrobbled while sitting fully clothed or stark naked behind a computer screen typing away and reaching auditory climax by all that heavy goodness scrobbled… So, here’s once again, is the 40 Most Scrobbled Artists of the total number of 858 artists scrobbled this way in that violent year we call 2023…

1.    Ruff Majik
2.    Earth Altar / Sun Below
3.    Phe
4.    My Sleeping Karma
5.    Domkraft
6.    Santo Rostro
7.    Dozer
8.    The Hives
9.    King Potenaz
10.    Fatso Jetson / Dali’s Llama

The Red Lantern

The Red Lantern

We haven’t been able to do a Red Lantern post every year. Cause the albums that earn the Red Lantern are only those on a sent in list of twenty entries, where they occupy the 20th position, and then only get voted for that one time. The years when this did not happen at all, we just invented the Bottom Dwellers post. But the reason why, remains the same. We just love the fact somebody out there loves these albums so hard they want other people know about them. And we are here to help out! If only a little bit.

So, since the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown is a weighted list and not every lovely freak out there sends in their list as a Top 20. Some send more, some send less. And we only count the albums that receive a Number 20 spot on any of the lists sent in as a contender for the Red Lantern, so this year, we have SEVEN albums that received only one vote as a Number 20 spot on someone’s list.

Amplifier – Hologram

The Manchester (now) duo Amplifier delivered their newest album back in April and sounds on many levels like a progressive rock opera of yore. But the touches of something nineties, something stoner and that heavy guitar sound, make it something special. Sort of continuing where their former album Trippin’ with Dr. Faustus, from 2017, left off. Hologram, highly eclectic and eccentric!

Center Of The Earth – Mars

This Danish quartet Center Of The Earth just as easily delivers a doom chug, a stoner riff or a psychedelic outburst. Three songs, almost forty minutes and not one bad second to be heard! Mars deserves to be explored! There’s life to be found!

Complete Snake – Red Hog

An Australian metalcore outfit that implores black and death and makes it all incredibly scuzzy, filthy and demented. Complete Snake are go! Four tracks, almost twenty-five minutes and something freaky and jazzy, make Red Hog that album you might need when you are on the verge of a high fever delirium tremens… If only to push you over!

Fatmas – External Internal Eternal

Fatmas hails from Australia and delivers some alternative metal that uses doom, sludge, stoner and something atmospheric to get the message across. And thus, makes it progressive and extremely delightful! External Internal Eternal gives you five luscious tracks and once again something varied and fat!

Mother Misery - From Shadow To Ghost

In 2024, Mother Misery will have contributed to the Swedish rock/metal scene for 20 years. From Shadow To Ghost is another highly diverse album, which seems to be the common thread throughout these Red Lantern albums. Metal, eighties touched one moment or seventies and almost proto the next. Progressive influences are there in abundance and something nineties as well. And always highly melodic; and thanks to all that diversity and pristine production, very modern!

Tribe Of Pazuzu - Blasphemous Prophecies

Blackened death metal straight out of the Canadian wastelands! Tribe Of Pazuzu pounds you into submission from the first song: We Serve Under No God! A smidgen of technical, thrash and speed metal, the eight tracks on Blasphemous Prophecies not only demands submission it also offers up release. Yes, and especially if you are a lost soul looking for some pristine death metal to set you free!

Wytch Hazel - IV: Sacrament

Four-piece Wytch Hazel offer a shining and Angelic lighted seventies inspired classic rock album that not only goes the way of all that proto goodness, but it also implores the best of NWOBHM and that prog feeling of yesteryear. And yes, even the Christian themed lyrics are brought in such a way, such warm harmonies you will be feeling some sort of spirit in no time. For me it was the spirit of hold school rock ‘n roll!

Onwards and Upwards in 2024!

Onwards and Upwards in 2024!

Best of wishes to each and everyone out there! Take care of yourself and the ones you love! Be good to the people you meet. It’s the most important thing you can do. And of course, promote all those bands and albums you love so dearly! May 2024 be as rockin’ as 2023 was! We know who produced the Number 1 album of 2023 according to all you lovely voters! Dozer! And their Drifting In The Endless Void album. Almost all of the lists that came in had Dozer somewhere on that list and many had it on one or their top five…

But of course, you all voted for many many many more albums. We won’t be sharing the total list of 789 albums, but we will share the Top 21 to 100. With Ruff Majik’s Elektrik Ram album on 21, my personal Number 1, missing only FOUR points to tie with Tidal Wave’s The Lord Knows on Number 20. And Purple Kong with their Blood Lightning album needing 340 points to do the same. Those are the 21 to 100 in spots, where quite a lot are tied as well. If we would not publish the ties separately on this list, we would need another 44 spots, and would bring Goat Explosion - Threatening Skies up as the Number 100 album. Yes, loads of albums ended up with the same amount of points below the Top 20, which leads me to deduct that the quality of the releases this year has been stunning! Amazing and awe-inspiring! But we’re sticking with the list below. And marvel, like we do at the end of every year, at the amount of amazing freaking heavy music release this year!
