Swedish death metal is a universal constant, and Gothenburg's Grand Cadaver plant another bloody flag in the scene with their second full-length "Deities Of Deathlike Sleep". These Swedes wield grinding, churning buzzsaws for riffs and have a knack for groove without skimping on brutality, which serves as one of the album's many strengths. The guitars are lethal, and the drums are relentless, but the sound is never lost in too much noise, and even the monstrous vocals are intelligible. As odd as it is to write, Grand Cadaver use space to great effect in their death metal, allowing each riff and breakdown the room to reach peak intensity before entering the next stretch. Highlight cuts "A Crawling Feast of Decay" and the title track are merciless, breakneck assaults with razor sharp musicianship, and doomier pieces like "Serrated Jaws" contrast with a gloomier but equally jarring type of heavy. The drums in the title track in particular are a battering ram, sprinting full-tilt into a whirlwind of guitar, and are struck with audible force to hammer home the message of “Stabbed With Frozen Blood". Epic closer "Necrosanctum” brings it all together with both spacious doom and thrashing, blackened riffs, a showcase for all of Grand Cadaver's morbid talents. "Deities Of Deathlike Sleep" is wicked, big-league death metal that holds your attention hostage through a precise and harrowing labyrinth of sound, unquestionably a standout of this year's heavy.
