Yesterday saw Danava’s Nothing But Nothing axe slinging its way into the hearts of many rock and metal lovers on Number 18! Well, we move almost forty points to another high energy rocker on Number 17 now. One that jumped on to the Number 2 position of the July Doom Charts with their fourth full-sized album in ten year. And ten tracks that speed their way into your bloodstream, turning you into this otherworldly being, completely addicted to every one of those tracks. Metal, punk, brought at such velocity and with such power, the end result will always be the same: you are forever changed! Slightly radioactive perhaps, thanks to the off-the-wall humor, the bouncing riffs and the incredible punch it all packs!

Number 18

We found four bands responsible for three albums grouped together on Number 19 with the exact same amount of points this morning. We now move over to Number 18, occupied by a single album. A steady riser as the votes came in. Released on Tee Pee Records in April, the eight tracks on this album have that high energy rock ‘n roll going on. That spirited metal, classic and heavy, but very eighties as well. A dual lead, dueling guitar assault that might spin your head into a whirl as you try to follow the notes they throw your way. It’s almost jazzy, the way they infuse that prog and proto into their version of NWOBHM. And even though you can listen to this very technically, you immediately feel it is not meant like that, it’s meant to fire you up, your loins and your blood! To get your doing that silly dance, that head banging disco and to get the party started right… This ain’t nothing for nothing but…

Number 19

The Lord Knows we love that Tidal Wave album that made the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2023 on Number 20. No less than 768 albums received votes and many of them received multiple votes. Which I guess means that all of them were loved by many. And on Number 19 we find many! No less than three albums made by four bands had the exact same amount of points; only a mere 10 points more than Tidal Wave. Psychedelic and alternative, bluesy and classic, expansive and cinematic. Three albums moving in very different directions but all heavy in their own way…

That one heavy psychedelic album felt as much as living entity as the title hinted at, atmospheric by default and with such soaring leads and floating vocals, you would surely and immediately sail away with those dynamic and laidback dirge sounds to a state of blissful being.

That other album proved to be yet another great blues and classic hardrock record from the boys that have been at it for quite some time. Slowly but decisively moving into that classic rock territory with every album they release. Soulful and retro, the album opts for more ease and slow tunes and less boogie and groove. They boys wanted everything more mellow and open, and they achieved that without any doubt.

The expansive and cinematic album is a collaboration between two bands that both deliver their absolute forte on every of the seven tracks. But these seven need to be digested in one sitting; for this is one grand spacious and wild adventure. Controlled, powerful chaos, like a perfect swirling Taoistic ritual. The two bands manage to weave an intricate and extremely detailed psychedelic tapestry that feels like you are on a majestic journey into the outer reaches of everything. Art in every sense of the word.

That final push of lists that came in during the past 24 hours shook up the spots near the top and on the bottom. Shifting positions and pushing a few out. This album had been higher up and not on the list at all during the past weeks. And we're extremely glad it remained hooked on the end result, which is only logical when this sophmore album is filled with so many hooks! It was an early top album during 2023 in the stonerrock genre. A classic, atavistic stonerrock record that crashed upon the shores and all your sound systems at the very beginning of the year. An early calling card for what the stupendous quality year of 2023 would bring. Out on Ripple Music, the four Swedes took the Number 1 spot of the January Doom Charts and stayed on heavy rotation throughout the heavy underground. Killer riffs, high quality vocal power and enough fuzz to ride this thing all the way through the year… Which many of you did and therefor, on Number 20 we find!

And so it begins…

Shall we do a different intro text or use the same one again and slightly edit it? For it has been an incredible ride once again. Well, we have passed the 8:00 CET deadline on December the 16th of 2023. And it has been a stupendous year in music once again. So many amazing releases! Last year there were more groups, definite frontrunners and serious difference in amount of points in the lower regions. This year seems different. Number 1 quickly took the lead and never let go. The seven below Number 1 are all very close in points. After which a slow and steady decent in points happens all the way to around Number 150. I guess this is a testament to the quality of all those releases this year. Mind blowing!

So, my thanks goes out, like every year, to all those amazing bands and artists who provided us with so much incredible music, so much musical mojo, that we all love so dearly. Personally, it comes closest to that thing people call magic! But, the deadline for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2023 has passed! It’s time for Number 20! According to your votes, a grand total of 236 lists received! Dwarfing the amount of 164 of last year!

A massive thanks to everyone for sending your list. The ones that sent their Top 5’s, their Top 10’s, Top 20’s or detailing 30 or even a few more great and favorite albums. Thanks! Thanks and thanks a million! We love it! We love you! And now, we go on to reveal the Number 20 of 2023! The Number 20 according to all you crazies out there who decided to vote for the Countdown this year!

We’ve already received an amazing amount of lists! Dwarfing the amount of yesteryear. So, a massive thanks to everyone who already sent one. But there is still time if you haven’t!

Around three to four months ago we wrote about how a true Indiana Jones leads Ozium Records when it comes to finding lost stonerrock treasures. It was when the label released the Are We Ape? & Ridge Split: "Magick Tongue" / "The Hidden Entities: The Cayuga Session". And guess what, the man has done it again! This time for the amazing Remuda Dust! Eight tracks recorded in the legendary Speedball Studio during the years of 1999 to 2001. It opens with all three tracks from their 2000 Superhighway EP and features three of the four Remuda Dust EP from 2000. And then there are two tracks which were only featured on compilation albums around the same time, namely Bleed and 18-Wheeler. And not only is this a deep dive into everything Remuda Dust had to offer back then; it’s also a promise of new work in the future. For thanks to this project, the guys got back together in 2022 and quickly stomped out a new single called Endless Line and another one called Moon followed suit. But those are new and meant for something that might see the light of day in 2024. The Speedball Years 99-01 is a glance back at the glorious Remuda Dust history. The four-piece delivered those tracks in atavistic stonerrock fashion, extremely so, because it was before QOTSA truly blew up and enchanted the entire world with their version of stonerrock. Cause around this time, Kyuss was only known to the lucky few. And where there is definite Kyuss influence to be heard on The Speedball Years 99-01, it also sounds like they wanted to tune down their grunge and make their alternative rock less melodic and more grinding. Which is exactly what they did out there in the desert as well. Remuda Dust sounds like they took their rock cues from the late sixties, early seventies rock bands. You know, bands like Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, and then used grunge to brush it in a shade of green and garage to turn up the grittiness. In fact, there’s so much energy and grit, it moves distinctly in a punk direction. And so does that vocalized spirit! Spitting in the eyes of all that might look wrongly in Remuda Dust’s direction. Especially on that Superhighway EP and those two lose tracks. The Remuda Dust EP is slower, more bluesy, less intense. Which might be the reason that the final track of said, Right On Time, which was probably the bluesiest and slowest on that EP, was left off on this compilation vinyl release. Resulting in a spirited ride through the Speedball years, speedy, energetic and high addictive! Now, let’s hope that Remuda Dust rediscovers that eneryg and will be back to sprinkle some more sand into all our eyes!

As you might know, might have seen, read and heard, we’ve had the honor of premiering their Your Whimsical Selfishness single and naturally also mentioned the follow-up called: The Never-Ending Star. Which means we should definitely write a few words of praise about the full The Reset album as well, right? Of course, cause we absolutely adored the earlier Saturna releases! This time around, they decided to move their psychedelic and stoner rock into more progressive and metal territories, taking everything they do into classic territory. That was already clear after hearing that first single, which opens the album. And that feeling carries over to the second track, The Never-Ending Star, with which we have also already spent quite some time. To hear it continue to, a bit more seventies, and a bit more hardrock on third track Smile, feels like a justification that our instinct was right. The guys want to embrace the metal past and aim for a timeless masterpiece. But continuing with Smile that almost AOR, traditional feeling isn’t all there is, for Smile does bare its teeth, Smile leaves a definite bitemark and that clench and grit only gets dispelled by following track December’s Dust. Twin acoustic guitars, vocal harmonies, a Saturna take on the classic ballad. It could have been written by any of the great rockers of yore. Into The Sun aims for a more proto, seventies, bluesy, Graveyard sounding approach. That blues touch is present in the following A Few Words To Say as well. With a vocal touch that also reminds of the formidable Kamchatka, which means the blues feels completely free of all constraints. A touch also heard in ninth and tenth tracks On Fire and A Way To Reset. That final A Way To Reset is so soulful, warm and completely rounded out. Ending the The Reset album on a high note and with forty-five minutes. The perfect amount for the vinyl treatment. Although the digital version has six bonus tracks, which will be tempting to be purchased as well! Looking back at 2023, I doubt I heard a better and more powerful blues, prog and classic rock statement than The Reset.

We count ourselves lucky that we managed to see the incarnation that brought us the amazing Venus Skytrip and Palo Verde albums. Their set on Sonic Whip Festival in Nijmegen, Netherlands was amazing! But that doesn’t mean we do not look forward to seeing the new incarnation of Psychlona as well! But on their new single Liberty they still have that earlier line-up and they still have that shimmering, impressionistic, magical realistic massiveness. They’ve signed to Magnetic Eye Records and are in the process of finishing up a new album to be released in 2024. And Liberty is here to whet your appetite and set you free!

Psychlona comment: "We are stoked to be joining Magnetic Eye", guitarist and singer Phil Hey writes on behalf of the band. "We had a few offers on the table but we all knew that this label was the way we wanted to go. We have already worked with label director Jadd Shickler under various guises over the past few years and he has become a trusted confidant and friend. That was probably our primary reason, very closely followed by the fact that Magnetic Eye has a great roster including Greenleaf, who are one of my all-time favourite bands. It made perfect sense. The city of Bradford in West Yorkshire is not known for an arid or hot climate. But hailing from the former industrial heartlands of rainy Northern England has not stopped PSYCHLONA from crafting an honest and particularly British take on desert rock. They don't drink tequila, they down pints of beer, my dear.

What began decades past in California got an update in the hot summer of 2016, when a group of local musicians began simmering molten riffs with the raw energy of UK punk and spoonfuls of classic English 60s and 70s psychedelia. The unique beast that is Psychlona was born.

In November 2018, when all the Northern towns turn grey, their sun-drenched debut album "Mojo Rising" garnered early recognition for the band and set them on track for a prolific next several years.

The hardworking Englishmen wasted no time, following with the release of sophomore full-length "Venus Skytrip" in August 2020. The album was greeted with rave reviews across the heavy rock underground, landed PSYCHLONA their first number one on the Doom Charts, and secured them high placements on numerous end-of-year lists.

The British stoner rockers did not slow down, unleashing their third album "Palo Verde" two years later in August 2022 and immediately scored a second 10/10 review in Powerplay Magazine UK.

Psychlona used the time between albums to establish themselves as a crushing live act. Aside from relentless touring, the band performed at prestigious festivals including Desertfest (UK & DE), Freak Valley (DE), SonicBlast (PT), Alcatraz Music (BE), Sonic Whip (NL) and twice across the Atlantic at Psycho Las Vegas (US).

Currently, Psychlona are preparing for the release of their fourth album, which will be out via Magnetic Eye Records in 2024. Meanwhile, enjoy a taste of what they've been at with the brand new video single 'Liberty'!

Been in the possession of The Awesome Machine’s Under The Influence and The Soul of A Thousand Years ever since they were released back around 2002, 2003. Starting off with a bang! Released on the third week of October, it made the 14th spot of the October Doom Charts. We’re talking about Elphinstone by Purification. The Portland four deliver no less than twelve tracks of highly impressive doom metal. But this is not your average highly impressive doom metal. No sire, they dive into unexplained historic events and translate that to some doom metal that implores synth and sax and does that to a brilliant degree. Turning their doom metal into something entirely their own. Purification has used alchemy to distill the red mercurial liquid and named it Elphinstone…

Sadhus, The Smoking Community - Illegal Sludge

Continuing with a boom! Greek five-piece Sadhus, The Smoking Community bring the crust to the doom and the filth to the sludge. Delivering eight extreme versions of said genres via a maelstrom of muck and mire. Heráldica de Mandrake – Magia Subversiva Metálica

Heráldica de Mandrake hails from Chile, and soon they will be releasing a complete compilation of the work they have done so far called Magia Subversiva Metálica. Or at least almost all of it and will add to this compendium the brand-new single: ‘Marcha para una generación de Condenados’. Their take on doom metal is filled with heroism and rising tones that herald the coming of something valiant. But the underlying dirge hint at the bravery needed to combat the ominous scourge lying in wait. This is true for all their earlier work as well as that new single. Four-piece Hoguera hails from Buenos Aires, Argentina and mention being influenced by bands like STAKE, Mastodon, Gojira, and Slipknot. But Faith No More must definitely also be among their favorites. And this is a good thing, cause making a cocktail of the bands mentioned above means you’re are brewing up something delicious. The cool Human Worth label is owned by the drummer of this duo. The new Conditions of Worth album by the Modern Technology duo was released back in October. So logically, it was released on their own label! Noise, sludge, punk and post hardcore, all rolled into something that only barely seems to contain the sonic wildness within. Cracks appear and burn marks are everywhere. Powerful and scarring, the Conditions of Worth album is not to be taking lightly. No, this is heavy, on all fronts!

The Last Fuzz – Take The Fall

I thought Bandcamp sites came naturally nowadays, but The Last Fuzz from Norway isn’t on it. Yet? Which is a shame, cause Take The Fall is an album that deserves to be heard by one and all! Garage fuzz and a whole lot of punk! And there are those moments that remind of the early nineties, that dirty grunge, that muddy attitude. Yes, they have something here, these Skedsmokorset three. As you know, sometimes, we need to keep that fire burning! The lava flowing! And dance upon the ashes of all who do not understand what Heavy Music means to us addicts. So, this here, is the start of another Quick Fire Weekend! Meant to spread the word on all that good stuff out there! The Bad Electric - Happy Endings Are Overrated

Out since yesterday, Happy Endings Are Overrated by Swansea, UK foursome The Bad Electric. They call it robo punk and sends shockwaves of super sparkling synth work towards you, coasting on an energetic layer of dirty riffs and intense drums. And after hearing these five tracks, we reckon The Bad Electric, should go on tour with the Electric Six and merge some nights, when the moon is full and the crowd extremely wild, into the The Bad Electric Six. Why not? It could happen!

The Magic Bus – Yarem Yarem

Yesterday we mentioned Beyond The Earth, but there's another project from many of the same members called The Magic Bus. My Greek is still limited to saying thank you, greeting a good day and ordering drinks. O’ and asking for the bill, but why on earth did I ever learn that? But for The Magic Bus you would want to learn more. Yarem, Yarem, is a poem set to music, and part of every poem’s charm is that it’s open to many interpretations! In the band’s mind it is an ode to the fragile but beautiful essence of love through time and hardship. Well, I guess I need to learn more Greek. It seems like a good idea to do this. It seems like a very good idea.

Sun Q – Myth

You will immediately be sucked into the Sun Q universe with that bluesy album opener Jane Doe. Heading straight for the heart of Myth, a nine track collaborative album by musicians and specialists from various countries. Recorded in Russia, in different studios in search of rare Soviet synthesizers, vintage tape instruments, and anything that could enhance the sound. A diverse array of musicians contributed to the recording, enriching the songs with vibrant strings and brass sections, not to mention unique instruments from all over the world, like Swedish nyckelharpa and African percussion. They even got three different choirs from Russia, USA, and Uganda. If that is not enough to make you check out Myth, here’s one more to get you on board: it might be all over the place, but there’s magic everywhere, and in short: it’s awesome!

Pharm – The Tower

Vortex was on heavy rotation about a year ago, and the new three track EP The Tower has followed suit the past month. It’s the new Pharm three track, EP, filled with hyper prog,  manic, funky and possibly insane. And that’s not just because it opens with a title called: Infinite Stairway to Madness. Frantic and break neck break back breaks. It’s Pharm and you simply need a dose of this from time to time to get your head working in the right order again!

WIJ – Oko

Out December 15th on Piranha Music, the new WIJ album Przestwór. And Oko is the first single for this. There are moments when you think this is how Go A should sound, but then you immediately think, no, this is how they could never sound, cause WIJ is way more special. It’s a track you need to put on repeat and listen to the entire night, while typing away frantically at some stream of consciousness poetry about a dystopian society in the future where you are continuously watched by a hovering eye behind you… Or that might just be me?

Hypnosaur - Inwazja z Plutona

Out since December 5, the cover version of Kombi’s Inwazja z Plutona by Hypnosaur! Remember that awesome Doomsday album from 2022? Already highly eclectic, this one cover shows us once again that Hypnosaur can do whatever that beast wants! Stonerizing some synth-pop track from the eighties? Sure, Hypnosaur doesn’t even break a sweat! And that video! Haha, awesome!

Polyfrenetics – DecayDecayDecay

“Polyfrenetics is a three headed troll out of Oslo, Norway who thinks intergalactic sack rock is the best invention since canned beer.” And they’re right of course! And they’ve released their third EP DecayDecayDecay back in October. Six songs about Decay and… err… Love… Or something... Psychedelic punk, stoner prog, it moves in circles, add some space rock and a lot of canned beer, and you know that this third EP by Polyfrenetics is another one of those heavy rock treasures that needs to be discovered by one and all!

Throe - O Enterro das Marés

Throe is first and foremost the experimental, ambient, post rock and metal project by multi-instrumentalist Vina. Also a member of Sao Paolo instrumental rock band Huey, the Brazilian explores limits and endings in this ode to finitude called O Enterro das Marés. In this almost thirty-minute-long exploration we get treated to a white-out level of ambient and post rocking beauty, as well as industrial and noisy blackening. Limits are tested, implosion possible, by depths and ranges…
