Paceshifters – Brand New Plan
Concerto Records – 2021
Rock, Alternative
Rated: ****
We only ever mentioned that third album Breach by the Dutch three called Paceshifters. A damn good album that was. But those earlier two were pretty fine as well and so was the one that came after entitled Waiting To Derail. After that they released a split EP with one of the finest bands ever to come out of Belgium: Wallace Vanborn. And guess what, Wallace Vanborn’s Ian Clement took it upon himself to produce and offer guidance on the Paceshifters new fifth album called Brand New Plan. Main man Ian Clement producing the Paceshifters? Oh! We’ve got to hear this! They ventured out to Ghent, Belgium and captured ten brand new Paceshifters rock anthems! Can we hear Ian’s touch? We think so, he opened things up, made everything grander and wider and opted for huge gestures. It’s still alternative rock and there are still punches of stoner rock and nudges of those wild beginnings, but it’s way more subdued, softened and serene. Indeed, and it sounds way more ambitious, and that ambition is definitely fulfilled. Dynamic in every sense of the word, they lean more on melodic waves and rustic rhythms to pull it through, leaving those grungy and speedy beginnings for small parts and little explosions. It’s definitely a grower and one that does not divulge every intricate detail of the plan from the get-go; and that’s probably another one of those Ian masterstrokes. Leaving loads to be discovered slowly and only for those who dare to open their minds… No warning needed though, cause there also a lot that will be exactly poppy and catchy enough for you to take on easily and immediately… I love it when a Brand New Plan comes together…
