Ordo Anguis - Life Goddess | Death Goddess
Self-released – 2023
Metal, Sludge, Prog, Doom
Rated: ****
We are uncertain if this album is quietly slipping through cracks of everyone’s attention. We are certain however that this should be almost impossible. For many reasons, one of them being that this is one incredibly loud beast of an album, so quietly seems out of the question. And secondly, it is far too good to go unnoticed. But we must confess we have seen little word about the new Ordo Anguis album Life Goddess | Death Goddess. Officially released on August the 7th, it has been high on my vote list for the Doom Charts for two consecutive months. I simply cannot get enough of it. Five tracks give you almost thirty minutes of sludge metal, with progressive and doom influences and an epic scale tale to pay homage to various serpent deities of the world’s mythological traditions. And to think this is all, the writing, the guitars, the bass, the vocals, so yes, the work of Chaim Rochester (The Metal Band Amadis, The Wristslitters), who invited two drummers to lay down the drums on this release. Opener AO – Wisdom And Sacrifice, brutishly stomps its way into the world, setting the perfect scene, so the burly vocals can knock it out of the park. After that first section, instead of immediate release, it keeps building. Carving out a larger-than-life tension arc and turning that one opening track into the perfect example of what the entire album is about. Although the rest of the tracks infuse minute influences from around the globe, to give them all their own identity. And this is so expertly done, and so minutely executed, that you get overwhelmed first and foremost by all the power and energy, for the five tracks blast through your speaker, and moments of respite are far and few between. The final fade out of the final track Against The Dawn only gives you a momentary breath of fresh air, for like Ouroboros, you will need to bite into the opening track immediately…
