Blackwitch Pudding – Taste the Pudding
Self Released – 2013
Stoner, Doom, Psychedelic, Drugs
Rated: ***
Portland’s Blackwitch Pudding are three deadly-serious wizards who peddle their own dark brand of cultish psych-doom. The template is tried and true; impossibly thick and fuzzy guitar riffs, buried vocal shouts, loyal worship of anything even tangentially related to weed and/or wizards and bouncing back and forth between extended riff dirges and up-tempo sleazy Sabbath roll. For example: “Mortre’D” is the quintessential towering pile of sticky sweet doom while ensuing burners such as “Super Sluts From Outer Space” dials in at a faster tempo. Blackwitch Pudding may strike the listener as next in a long line of mournful doom metal outcasts, but this is a group that performs in hooded cloaks and utilizes some odd-ball themes. (“Show us your Panties”?!) So somewhere in this ultra-thick pudding there’s a sense of (twisted) humor that can be quite funny. “Shark Commando” sounds like something the Sci-Fi Channel would come up with for the summer - and this song could serve as its Stoner/Jaws soundtrack. Musically, the highlight is the guitar playing, and particularly when the group launches into a searing guitar lead such as the one on “Swamp Gas of the Nevermizer”. Taste the Pudding is a decent effort for some grinding stoner doom in the mold of early Sleep and Electric Wizard and gets bonus points for being so irreverent!
