Having formed a cult following, releasing a string of top-notch albums, and breaking out of the underground with growing recognition throughout the larger metal community, Khemmis have come a long way since their debut back in 2015. Though I hate the term, this new release feels like a return to form, or at least a resurgence after the more divisive album Deceiver. The band sounds more fired up than ever, having truly evolved into their own sound. Though Khemmis have never been a ‘simple’ band, it seems like there are more complexities, layers, and ambition this go-around. Which leads to an album that rewards multiple listens, giving the listener time to unpack and discover all of its little nuances and intricacies. The guitars are beastly, the bass weighty, and the drums truly shine with their complexity. The contrast between the vocals has always been a major highlight, but the harsh vocals on this album have finally been captured with their full impact and intensity. Of course, the clean vocal harmonies remain as rich as ever, a powerful constant in the band’s distinct sound. Khemmis proves they are still a force to be reckoned with, and they still have plenty left to conquer.
