This one was a nice surprise. It received more plays from me in June than some of the bigger names that released albums. It has that special something that’s not always easy to pinpoint or identify. In ways it’s a memory, a familiarity, and nostalgic. The Californian four-piece Jovian Queen present seven songs on Magnum Dopus, exploring early metal and proto-doom soundscapes. The recording has the feeling of a small jam room where the air hangs heavy with smoke, there’s dust on the vintage equipment, and the band are jamming out to their creations. The gritty production suits the material perfectly, giving the album a weathered, authentic old-school sound. Rich with catchy guitar riffs and melodies, the two guitars link up with some sick harmonies across Magnum Dopus, channeling the spirit of 70’s heavy rock, blending doom with a classic twin-guitar attack. Even if you can’t place them all, you can hear Jovian Queen’s influences on the album; there’s some Sabbath worship to be found sprinkled throughout, but fans of Mountain Witch, Brimstone Coven, and Mirror Queen will also feel right at home.
