Fuzz Evil / Chiefs – 7 Inch Split
Battleground records – 2014
Rock, Seventies, Psych, Stoner
Rated: ****
Low-end fuzzed out tones start off after which a perfect guitar color cuts in with a slow moving riff and slow trucking drums leading the way to a distant land. And then the vocals start; dragging you along on a spirit quest down the rabbit hole, that speed ups but without ever starting to run. What a start and what a track by the American trio Fuzz Evil. This chugging track is bodacious in fuzziness, grandiose in color schemes and massive in enchantment. Highly addictive! On the other side we find another trio named Chiefs. They slow things down a bit and turn the brisk moving Fuzz Evil track into a sluggish trek up the mountain. And this without ever becoming too doomy or sludgy; no, these cats remain steadfast in the heavy psychedelic rock that nods towards stoner. Sporting a colossal groove and flowing guitars it crackles and burns and leaves you wanting more. Just like their brothers on side A did. So, lather, rinse, and repeat. Or better yet, smoke, drink and repeat, keep spinning that seven inch and keep grinning like the Cheshire cat after his afternoon tea…
