Paceshifters – Breach

Paceshifters – Breach
V2/Excelsior/Goomah – 2014
Rock, Speed, Grunge
Rated: ****

On the third album of the Dutch formation Paceshifters the two brothers decided to implore the help of a new drummer. Which seems to work out beautifully for the brothers. Cause they’ve been hanging on that first stomp of success for two albums now and it was time for something different. And Breach, as the new album is called, is definitely something else. Those first efforts were highly punky and had the air of something seventies. The new record however most distinctly towards the nineties and perhaps even towards the illustrious Nirvana. Is that the reason the album was called Breach? Play on rhyme type thingy? Whatever the reason may be, the album contains that perfect amalgam of heavy ruckus and melodic pop and with those extra layers they’ve added on the record it also moves towards something that could have come out of the high desert. O’ and how about that Seb Dokman; suddently becoming a pure rock ‘n roll frontman! Hear him wail, hear him growl and hear him shriek!

Jegulja – Finese In Blat

Jegulja – Finese In Blat
Self released – 2014
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Prog, Instrumental
Rated: ****

The man left Carnaval and soon after started a new project called Jegulja. And looky here. The three-piece has now delivered a first three song demo ep called Finese In Blat or Finesse in Mud if you feel the need to have it translated. Three jam-like heavy tracks that plow over you like a speeding tractor. Which are named in accordance to their very own humoristic style Wig Pigs, Baby Pictures Of Famous Dictators and Nord. Which seems to be the odd one out, title wise. But how about that trucking sound that is so palpable on those first two majestic songs? Well, this one seems to even rise a bit higher. Cause the mud is everywhere. And on those first two songs the mud is sky high. But on the final track Nord, the guys seem to lift off and soar across their earlier devised muddy fields. Holy hell, Jegulja. Now here’s a slippery fish we all need to catch and devour whole. After which it will leave you wanting tons and tons and tons more. Luckily, we can now be pretty sure that their hovercraft is full of eels as well! So get on board. And eat till your belly bursts!!!

Tank86 is looking for you!

Tank86 is looking for you!

We from Stoner HiVe are not in the money making scheme. Unfortunately. But we do want to promote the projects and fundraisers that deserve more attention. Like the helping hand for Ed Barnard. And ofcourse for these cats. Instrumental sludgemetal monster TANK86 just finished up their new record Obey. To raise funds for the vinyl, CD and shirts they started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Though they are already halfway towards their goal, the band could really use some help to reach the total sum. On Tank86 Kickstarter you can back the project by pre-ordering the new record, or by using one of the other ‘pledges’. And while you’re there, get your face melted by listening to a brand new Tank86 track!

Founder Doommantia still in a dire position…

Founder Doommantia still in a dire position…

After suffering serious health problems the honorable Mr Ed Barnard, founder of Doommantia was left with a stack of bills so high it left him homeless. Despite having a roof and a bed over his head due to the generosity of others, he is in desperate need for his own home. And artists and record companies have flocked at the call, auctioning off memorabilia and recordings. A benefit night has been held and there are many more projects afoot. Unfortunately the back debts are still huge and the monthly medical expenses are bloody tough as well. So reach out, give a brother a hand and donate whatever you can…

Electric Wizard – Time To Die

Electric Wizard – Time To Die
Spinefarm Records – 2014
Doom, Doom and some more Doom
Rated: ?????

To borrow from Magritte – “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” – this is not a review, rather more a collection of thoughts about the new Electric Wizard album that have struck me as I play it. A lot of cry-babies want “Dopethrone” to be recorded over and over and over again. These words will not be for you. I like a band to try new ideas, sounds, concepts etc and not to live on past glories. And so I have actually listened to other albums this remarkable and influential group of changing musicians have offered us. The word “Doom” now seems to encompass anyone with heavy rock leanings and the words “Witch” or “Black” somewhere in their name. Oh and a female vocalist? Perfect… I really like many of these bands but Doom they ain’t – just great rock bands. Live with it. The Wizard have stuck to a vision of bleakness, darkness, heaviness and nightmarish visions that refuse to be defined by a cool riff or retro leanings. They mean it man! The clean(ish) production that has dominated the last couple of albums has been replaced with a suffocating stew of murky beats and distant vocals, filthy, half heard solos and riffs that sound like misery. This album is not meant to be liked or admired but played as a statement of intent. Is it any good? Yes. Is it great? ….. I need to give it some more plays before I can make my mind up. Is it the best Doom album you will hear this year? No. Play it and make your own mind up.

Yob – Live at the Underworld, London

Yob – Live at the Underworld, London
8th September 2014

I missed Bast due to a patient throwing a bowl of yogurt over me! Yeah, sounds funny now but it did hold me up somewhat. This meant that the band playing when I had descended the stairs into the pit of heat, sweat and mob of head banging fanatics were the always popular Pallbearer. Now I have never really got into this band due to the vocals reminding me of countless 70’s/80’s average rock bands that I did not like then and certainly do not want to hear again. However in a live setting the singer has a much rawer edge that to my ears just raises them up into a different level. Their set was great, the sound was fantastic and the crowd responded with many a flailing of limbs and heads. I was surprised to see many people leaving to go up to the bar when they had finished – or get some cooler air but who cared – this meant that I could be in the second row from the stage.

Some guys wandered on stage setting up guitars and chatting to people at the front. I suddenly realised it was Yob. Cool guys, just doing their thing and getting ready.  Mike Scheidt slowly started to chime out some clean notes that just rang and echoed for a while until the weight of the universe seemed to crash upon me as Yob let rip with all the sonic weapons at their disposal. This was music experienced through your bowels and chest as well as your ears. After the opening track – I think it was “Ball of Molten Lead” – they played the new album “Clearing The Path To Ascend” in its entirety. Some of the songs passages really had a trance like quality to them that really brought blissed out expressions to the crowd – worship at the Sonic Church of Yob is performed at full volume here – this was devotional music created by guitars, passion, growls, croons, bass that levels mountains and drums that made my eyes burn. They played a mesmerising set that was perfect in tone, sound and power. Due to the heat and beer, to be honest I kinda lost the plot as to what was being played towards the end, I was just content to let everything wash over me. This was probably the most intense, draining concert I have been to in a long time and one I will not forget in a hurry.

Possessor – Electric Hell

Possessor – Electric Hell
Self released – 2014
Occult Metal, Doom, Stoner
Rated: ****

Occult metal? Never been sure of what that means but when listening to these powerful grooves, to me, it means Doom played at Stoner speed which sounds just fine and dandy. These guys do not fuck around with meandering intros or acoustic beginnings – plug in, turn up, fuzz boxes set to kill, hey ho, let’s fucking go. This is unstoppable stuff on display. High On Fire heaviness mixed with an almost Discharge menace and drive just ticks all the boxes for me. Vocals are nicely buried in the mix with distortion and a dry edge that gives the gritty feeling needed. Riffs are of course served up with a side order of pounding drums and low end bass to envelop the listener in a total immersion of the vibes being produced. There is a raw/live feeling to the production that does not distract, in fact, it adds to the “in your face” mood that pervades this great album. It will be an injustice if Possessor does not go on to greater things.

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Another Friday another round of hot steaming lava... Why yes! Cause the Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday segment is a weekly feature of a handful of bands and only a small amount of words to help spread their musical prowess and our melodic belief…

Baba Naga – Baba Naga

First up: the psychedelic three-piece Baba Naga. They have not only produced a hell of a two track EP filled with trippy stoner and languid mind altering music. They have also managed to turn on the exotic and welcome Eastern influences; turning their music into something hot and transcendental. Give them a head wobble!

Pineal – Smiling Cult

Pineal, a London based three-piece that produces low sounding fuzzed out progressive metal with influences from stoner, grunge and nineties alternative. Which turns out to be a weird mixture between Tool, Melvins, Alice In Chains and perhaps Pelican or ISIS. Smile and get wicked!

Machine – Dark Birds

No, Dutch band The Machine did nog forget the THE in front of their name. This is the Danish band without the THE in front of their name. Machine makes dark alternative rock with loads of grunge and stoner influences. Where dark is meant for their symbolisms and contrasts and not so much the music. Which moves very distinctly to something highly American and easy comestible…

Quake – The Divide

The young American metalcore formation Quake will soon release their first album Insurrection. Their first single The Divide will surely feature proudly on this record. Be ready though; cause The Divide will split your head in two!

Back from Lille…

Back from Lille…

What a town! They have rock ‘n roll coursing through their veins! So many places with live music and so many artists and bands! And the guys from Little Boy aka Here’s To The Lion (motherfuckers!) and ZOE were the best guides one could wish for! Golden Wave, L’Artgressif, El Diablo, Amul Solo and many many more places. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Lille and absolutely everything right! We need to return there soon! Just as we will soon continue on with the HiVe!
