The April 2024 Doom Charts – 40 to 26
Stoner Hype
Here we are again, collecting what we did on our little Facebook page right after the new regular edition of the Doom Charts goes online. We count down from 40 to 26 and try to type in a few words about that album or ep that makes sense to us. It’s not a review; but usually a miniscule blurb, a little sentence to entice, to hype. A Stoner Hype… Well, we collected them here to post for you in one nice little post on the blog… Because we like to keep things nice and tidy and it helps us spread the good word about them on Instagram as well…
“Typhuzz hails from Karlsruhe in Germany and on their self-titled ten track album they bring you all the proto and retro goodness... Psychedelic, doomy and Sabbath by default!”
NO MAN’S VALLEY – CHRONONAUT COCKTAILBAR / FLIGHT OF THE SLOTHS
“Dutch fivepiece No Man's Valley have two sides of an awesome vinyl coin... One side filled with short, quirky and rock noir atmospheric songs. While the other side is filled with one long psychedelic, ever flowing, ever floating adventure... And all of it is brilliant! It's called: Chrononaut Cocktailbar / Flight of the Sloths and you can hear it on their bandcamp site or order it from Tonzonen Records.”
“There are moments when I am entirely conflicted about the Ivy Gardens release Goon... And then there are moments when it's cut and clear... this rocks! Well, judge for yourself and be sure to keep going... Cause end track Provider will seal the deal!”
“Been working on some words for the Dätcha Mandala album KODA. It's out on Discos Macarras and it was high on my list of votes for the April Doom Charts and been spinning it a lot.. Go check it out and come back soon to read what it did to me... Maybe it did the same to you?”
“Savannah sludge, punk, hardcore, metal and a whole lot of ruckus! It's the new Black Tusk album The Way Forward... Out on Season of Mist... Straight out of the swamps, as fast as a bullet and just as deadly!”
SPACEDRIFTER – WHEN THE COLORS FADE
“You ready for some QOTSA goosebumps and Palm Desert jitters? Grungy, stonerrock and nineties alternative all delivered in such a way that it will surely send shivers down everyones rock spine... Check out the debut full-sized album by Swedish foursome Spacedrifter called When The Colors Fade...”
“Drink in Double Horse's Diablerie and you'll be doing a diabolical dance upon the grave of whichever demon decided to decapitate you... A grimy proto sound straight out of filthy dungeon, rumbling and rumbling, and grumbling and roaring, like the demon that died drinking your blood... And it's out on Glory or Death Records...”
“More proto, more of that ancient lust for blood, but now intoned with doom and stoner metal. It's the Denmark three known as Trippelgänger... Check out their Possessor album and you will obey your master!”
“We managed to jot down some words about DOOL's new album The Shape Of Fluidity, out on Prophecy, a few weeks ago, which you can read HERE! Or you can press play and listen to their wonderful The Shape Of Fluidity below."
“Late to the Freeways party, but never too late, thanks to my brethren of the Doom Charts! Dark Sky Sanctuary is that shimmering gold of classic hard rock, mixed with NWOBHW and all those tunes that will bring you forever forward towards the horizon on those endless open roads... The perfect soundtrack for a roadtrip! Out on Dying Victims Productions since April 26...”
“It's been heavy rotation over here ever since Doktor420 lead me to their release... We're talking about the Polish four named Tet! Their concoction of stonerrock, psychedelic, seventies inspired and doom infused heavy rock tastes exactly like my favorite potion... Sprinkled with some krautrock and a wild atmosphere, this is the kind of blend that will lead you into a savage and adventurous night!”
“BONGRIPPER... It's out on The Great Barrier. But the bandname is enough right? Do we need to say more? Do we have to state the obvious? That there instrumental doom metal, both sludgy, noisy and droney will blow you away and show you images of barren wastelands and collapsed societies... Cause you know.. Nothing Remains Forever... Empty...”
BOTTENHAVET – LJUD I TYSTA RUM
“We've had Bottenhavet on repeat yesterday, for the rest of the day, for their Ljud i Tysta Rum album is so addictive! Out on Fuzzorama Records the Swedish (now) four delivered a debut that is absolutely stunning. They're the band to watch. To hear and to rock out to. Stonerrock, but with grandiose arcs. Grunge, but highly melodic. Fuzz, but highly dynamic. A bit of seventies, a bit of prog and a whole lot of love for the good stuff! This is the Heavy Underground album that will slowly but surely take control of your heart and soul! It is that good! And should have been in the Top 10 of the Doom Charts! Or even higher...”
“So, today we continue on with Stonerhead! Classic stonerrock, Running High promises and delivers! Sometimes with a more metalized or grunge approach, psychedelic touches and seventies flourishes, but always delivering it all honest and with a glance back at them blues roots... Wonderful! It will have your Running (High) for the nearest record store! (Or alternatively you can order it on their bandcamp site...)”
“And then the biggest surprise of the April Doom Charts... No, not that we find Whores. with their sublime album War. on it... But that we come to realize that their stunning Gold. album is already eight years old! WHAT?! And War. brings that seemingly chaotic, torrent of riffs, deluge of noise back in great sludge and colossal rock! Metal by default and completely appealing to all the senses, even if it slices through you like a razorblade... This is the only War. that is good for you...”
Tune in next month when we do this Stoner Hype again for the number 40 to 26 of the May Doom Charts... Live during the weekend on our little Facebook Page or afterwards when we collect them here... But for now... Go listen to all of the 40 of April if you haven't already!
