Moana – Feet In The Ground, Eyes To The Sky

Perth's rising Art-Rockers Moana return with another dance through the Dreamtime: A five-track smorgasbord of Crushing Riffs, carefully-crafted Orchestral immersions and all congealed around the extraordinary vocals of Moana Mayatrix. Opening track "I (Kingdom)" sweeps in with a staccato beat and soft guitar picking, whilst Moana herself seduces, beguiles and shrills the listener into an Eastern-inspired groove that mutates and shifts through a plethora of instrumentation. Track II(Temple) exhales the decaying breath of Doom from the offset: Another staccato riff liberally dashed with sultry, lilting vocals before bursting into a sinister, creeping riff with piercing guitar motifs and thunderous bass, before it lulls into a sweeping synth-drop before the erupting, riff-laden conclusion. "A Rose In The Darkness" ebbs pastorally on a bed of soft orchestration and gentle guitar whilst Moana herself breathes and cajoles life into the lush background. "Cry Of The Banshee" bursts into life with an almost Ceilidh -style violin break floating over a strident percussion and heavy bass, before winding down to the familiar staccato groove ever-present in all of the songs. A haunting and mournful refrain made even more so by the trill vocal displays. Final track "Immortal" recedes into an ambient, piano and voice passage, beautifully-choreographed Orchestration surging and plunging in the background, building the tension towards a melancholic, violin and cello epilogue. Moana create lush, incredibly detailed music that begs to be listened to time after time.
