Sun of Grey - Outerworld
Self released - October 2020
Doom, stoner, psych
Rated: ****
Outerworld is the anticipated follow up to doom trio Sun of Grey's 2017 debut EP, and the Colorado crew more than deliver on their initial promise. Lumbering low and slow, Sun of Grey dole out weighted and crunching doom that's as emotional as it is heavy. Soaring and evocative vocals are the special ingredient of Outerworld, and make their mark immediately in opener "Dark Souls". Complementing perfectly the dour doom instrumentation, the vocals are clean and melancholy, with an almost operatic feel that adds extra impact to the patient, sledgehammer riffs. Follow-up "Jar of Leeches" starts off suitably creepy, eventually joined by drums like thunderclaps before shifting to a lurching, midtempo riff somewhere between High on Fire and Conan. A deceptively elegant solo wanders in as well, flowing between the more aggro sludge attacks. The entire album is a lesson in heartfelt heavy, from the molasses-slow, psychedelic lumber of "Lucifer Smiled" to the adrenaline pumping roll of the title track's second half. Sun of Grey are a force to be reckoned with that don't skimp on the brains with their brawn.
