Italia: A 'vecchio amico' to half-a-century of mind-expanding sounds once again proffers the sweet fruits if its musical vines with Earthshine, the third release of L'Aquila band, The Whirlings. Earthshine captures the music of a band who have evolved through Psychedelia and Metal, honing a dramatic and all-encapsulating amalgam of Heavy Doom, Post-Metal and Dark Hallucinations that sweep, cajole, chastise and purify their way through the five pieces on offer. "Vacuum" opens with the delicate promise of warm reverb, drizzling into an electro - krautrock groover that has shades of Nina Hagen, winding down to a teeth-rattling doom closure. The groove continues unabated with 'Reverence', a funk rhythm underpinning smooth synths and gentle guitar echoes that gather momentum and tension to a crushing conclusion. The fluidity and dynamics of The Whirlings sound is most amply demonstrated on the closing epic, "Lost In Without": a brutal, beautiful and bold demonstration of a band at their zenith, ultimately creating a work that easily stands shoulder-to-shoulder with counterparts Ufomammut - Stunning!
